I’m Not Crazy

In August of 1578, 115 settlers arrived on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. It was the second attempt by settlers to create an outpost there, and they were once again met with difficulties. It was decided that Governor John White would sail back to England for provisions, leaving a wife, daughter, and granddaughter. In August of 1580, John White returned to his family and community, but when he arrived all of the settlers had mysteriously disappeared. One of the only clues for him to work off of was the letters “Cro” carved into a tree. No one from the community was ever seen again.
