Hey there, Anna. I've got a question here for you right off the start of this episode, and it is... What would your Spotify playlist, like maybe if you went into your Spotify and looked at your most recently played songs, what would that playlist tell us about you? Actually, I have to say at the moment, luckily. Maybe this would always be the same answer, but I think at the moment I've got a load of quiet moment playlists.
like lots of chill stuff and meditation moments and things like that so I guess it would say that I'm a very chilled or relaxed person but actually it's kind of the opposite it's more that I need that type of music to chill me out sometimes after the end of the day i just need something relaxing uh to put on so that is actually my most recently played i've got to be honest what about you andrew
I guess my playlist is really all over the place. You know, I have this mega mix where just anytime I come across a cool song, then I add it to my mega mix playlist and it just covers. Literally all genres from world music to heavy metal to K-pop, like it's all on there. So I think I would come across as having rather eclectic taste. And so Anna, the reason why I'm asking you this question here is because we are going to talk all about taste in today's Chatterbox episode.
For those of you who don't know, this is kind of a series that Anna and I have been doing over the last little while where we're talking about the senses. We started off by talking about smells, specifically scents in the office. But we also talked about feeling and... textures and touch. And now here we are talking about taste. And we're going to break this episode down into several parts. We're going to talk about taste in the physical sense, like eating and drinking and tasting things.
with our tongues, but we're also going to talk about... taste, meaning personal preferences. And yeah, in English, we use this word taste to talk about those two different things. So we'll split it into a couple of parts. And we'll just enjoy a fun conversation here. There is a helpful study guide with an interactive transcript, detailed vocabulary explanations and examples, plus a quiz for this episode for all Qloops members. We highly recommend studying.
along with the guide as you go through this episode. So to get it, just visit our website, QLips.com, become a member, and you can check out the study guide and follow along here with Anna and with me today. Okay, so Anna, I think let's jump into it. And like I said, we're going to break this down into a couple of parts. The first part will be all about physical taste. So using our tongues to taste.
Food and beverages, I guess. And let me ask you this question to kick things off. I'm wondering, do you think we're born... with innate taste preferences, like we like this food or we hate this food, or is it something that changes over time?
Well, I think we must be in some way born with a certain taste profile. And it makes me think of my sister because from... A really early age, like I'm talking when my sister was like one or two years old, she absolutely loved olives, which was like a very acquired taste for like a one year old. Yeah, that's wild. It's wild. But not only the olives, but the olive juice that was in the jar. The brine. Brine. Yes, the brine of the brine or of the olives.
It just used to, I can't stand really olives. That taste is just very salty. I'm not sure. It's got a really... unique taste, I think, olives and also texture. So yeah, she obviously was born with the taste preference for olive juice. I don't know. So maybe we are. What do you think? I think, yeah, we probably have some innate preferences, like an attraction to a certain food. But I know that when I was younger, I was, I wouldn't say a super picky eater, but I was definitely...
I'm adverse to eating some kinds of foods. I didn't like tomatoes. I didn't like eggs, really. I mean, I liked eggs when I was a little baby, but then when I became a child and teenager, I thought eggs were gross. So I'd never eat them, but now I love them. And there's a bunch of foods like that. I didn't really enjoy eating seafood at all. Now I love it. So yeah, I think definitely it's...
100% true that our tastes can evolve and that we can enjoy foods later in life that when we were kids, we didn't really like. But I'm wondering, Anna, do you think... when your mom was pregnant, that maybe she was eating a lot of olives or something? I don't know, baby? I'm not sure. But my sister was obsessed with olives, like you can't imagine. And it was like...
Like we say in English, I'm going to repeat the phrase I said before, it's a very acquired taste for a toddler. You know, most toddlers don't like... olives so it was really unusual and she actually really likes savory foods so things like olives she also liked pepperamis, which I'm not sure if people can get in other parts of the world. Do you know what that is, Andrea? Pepperami? Is it like a stuffed pepper? No. No. That would be much healthier. No, it's like a...
It's like a thin meat stick. Oh, okay. Got it. So it's like a spicy meat stick. And she would chop that up. My mum would chop it up. She wasn't chopping up food as a toddler, but she would chop it up and she would eat it with pasta. So it was just pepperoni and pasta. And that was her thing. So she's obviously got a taste for that.
savory flavors, salty flavors. How about you, Anna? Is there a food that you didn't like when you were younger, but now you're okay with? Oh, there's loads of things, but I would... say a drink rather than a food, coffee for example. I remember when I was a teenager and my mum would drink coffee and I was like oh it stinks that's disgusting how could you ever drink that I'm never going to drink coffee when I'm older that's disgusting.
Yeah, that changed when I was about, that changed after university, I think, when I started working, when I started actually having real responsibilities and a job and working 12 hours a day. that changed pretty fast. So I grew to love coffee and I absolutely adore a beautiful cup of coffee now, but I couldn't stand that bitter.
coffee taste when i was younger what about you andrew you said eggs that was really interesting you used to hate the taste of eggs yeah maybe not the taste it was more of a texture thing I think to hearken back to our previous conversation about the textures, what really got me was a runny yolk. So the yolk is the yellow part of the egg in the middle.
And as you know, guys, you can cook eggs to different degrees of completion. And if it's not quite completed and it's runny, we call it a runny yolk, meaning still pretty liquidy. kind of liquidy texture just really grossed me out when i was younger but now i love like all styles of eggs and a runny yolk is okay so i really came around
And it's funny because my mom used to tease me. She'd say like, oh, when you're two or three years old, you used to take toast and dip it into the runny yolk and eat it that way. And I liked that when I was like two or three, but something happened when I grew up a little bit. And then I've come full circle and now I'm okay with them. But I remember also when I was younger, I think it was one of my uncles gave me a sip of his beer.
And I thought, oh, this is so gross. Why do adults like drinking beer? And then when I grew up a little bit more, I realized why adults like drinking beer. And now... I mean, I don't drink too much alcohol these days, but I love non-alcoholic beers. I got a bunch in my fridge and that's one of my favorite go-tos for like a refreshing beverage on a hot day is I love one of those beers.
Yeah, I can totally relate you with coffee, me with the taste of beer, something that we mature into, I suppose. Exactly. As we become more adult and our tastes mature slightly, I guess. And Andrew, have you ever completely lost your sense of taste before? That's a good question. No, I don't think I ever have. I know many, many people lost their sense of taste during COVID, right? That was one of the main or major symptoms that a lot of people experienced.
is not one that i experienced so i don't know what it would be like to have no taste i've always assumed that it would be really great like oh yeah if i couldn't taste anything then i could just eat carrots and like white fish all the time, it wouldn't matter. But I heard people say that even when you lose your sense of taste, you still crave the same.
unhealthy foods maybe that you would even if you had your sense of taste. Maybe it's deeper, right? We're craving that fat or that sugar as humans. Unfortunately, we crave those things. But yeah, I never lost my sense of taste. How about you, Anna? Has that happened to you before? Yeah, no, me neither. Touch wood. Because I think...
I think it would be really depressing and really sad to lose your sense of taste. And so I feel for any of you if you're listening to this and you've lost your sense of taste because it must be really horrible. And actually, I think I heard something about a chef. who lost their sense of taste. They went into a depression because it's just so hard to...
We don't really think about that because you think, oh yeah, then I could just eat healthy food and it doesn't really matter, but it's actually really hard for us if we can't taste food. So yeah, I'm really glad that I haven't lost my sense of taste and hopefully, fingers crossed, I won't in the future either.
Yeah, let's knock on wood that we both never lose our senses of taste in the future. And I love that expression that you use there and a knock on wood. Maybe some of our listeners don't know what that means, but... You know, it's kind of a superstition that we have in our cultures where if we... say something aloud, then maybe we'll jinx ourselves or we'll make it like more likely to come true in the future. And so we can undo the jinx by knocking on wood.
But even sometimes we can just say that phrase, knock on wood, meaning like, I hope this never comes true in the future, right? So yeah, knock on wood that we never lose our senses of taste. Okay, Anna, I have a question for you about British food. Should I say controversial British food? Like around the world, it's got this reputation of not being the most delicious cuisine.
Which I don't know if I agree with or not. I think there's a lot of great British dishes out there. But is there like a food from Britain that you could introduce to us that has maybe a weird or unexpected flavor? or tastes a little strange or different than you might expect? Absolutely. I've got one specific thing that if you go to the UK and you're listening to this, you have to try it. And it is called Marmite.
Andrew, I don't know if you've ever heard of Marmite before. Sure, yeah. I think Australians love it too, perhaps. Right. So Marmite is a spread. So you put it on top of things like bread, for example, and it has a phrase actually in English. And this is really interesting because we say Marmite, you either love it.
or you hate it and I think maybe that comes from the advertising originally and we actually use this now as an expression in different areas of life so we can use it to describe people we could say well she's kind of mom right you either love her or you hate her And Marmite, you've just got to try it. So it's like this dark brown spread in this jar. And the taste is...
so strong. So it's really salty. It's really savory. It's a little bit like a soy sauce. It's got some vegetable undertones. It's got meaty undertones. I don't know how to describe it, but it's made from a yeast extract and it is, well, like I said, you either love it or you hate it. I personally hate it it's disgusting like i i don't know how anybody can physically consume that and be a normal person but some people absolutely love it so i think that is the most weird
taste in British food. It's just really strange. It's the strangest thing ever. I'm not sure if it is actually British, to be honest, but we have it in our supermarkets and things like this. Yes, it's Marmite for me, Andrew. That's the weird taste. Marmite. Hmm. Okay, yeah, I've never tried it. I've definitely heard about it, and I know about its reputation. But...
I kind of feel like maybe I would like it. Like, you know, a lot of those foods that are really strong, like I love black licorice and I know a lot of people hate black licorice, but I really enjoy that as well. I kind of feel like maybe I would like that. I tend to enjoy strong flavors. And if it's a little bit controversial and some people hate it, then I'm almost more likely to enjoy it.
I'm going to add it to the list. If I can find some here in Korea, I'll try it out. On some toast, Marmite. What about in Korea, Andrew? Are there any very distinct... foods or drinks that have a unique or surprising taste? Oh man, where should I start? Like the list is long. For Westerners or people who didn't grow up eating Korean food, I think there's a lot of different dishes that maybe are hard to stomach at first. I have to say now.
i really really really love korean food and if i leave korea like on vacation then i miss korean food almost right away and i'm like oh where's the korean restaurant where i'm at like i need to get there so i love it but In Canada, I'm going to switch it around here and go to my country in Canada. There's a food that I think many people will have tried before, which is maple syrup. And to me, it's such...
You know, it's a delicious, sweet syrup. But I was thinking about it. It's so weird that it comes from a tree. Take this maple tree. And in Canada, we just sort of tap. this hollow tube into the tree and we just let the the water and the sap of the tree just pour into a bucket and then we can
heat it up, boil it down. And then you have maple syrup. And it's just like amazing, sweet, delicious food that comes from a tree. I guess apples and oranges and other fruit, but like other food that comes from a tree. I can't think of too many examples. So I think it's a pretty unique food and Canada doesn't really have too many foods that we can claim as our own, but maple syrup is one that I'm proud of.
and that I enjoy eating when I get a chance to. Yeah, I love maple syrup. I've got some maple syrup in my cupboard, actually. And one thing that we've started doing at Christmas, because we have a family member from Canada,
is pancakes with bacon and maple syrup on Christmas morning, which I thoroughly enjoy. Sounds okay to me. Good. Anna, maybe we could transition now from talking about our... flavor preferences and taste as a physical sense into more the other into the other way that we talk about taste in english and that is personal
preferences. And so we use this word taste when we're talking about the things that we like or dislike. And I was trying to brainstorm. We could use... taste in conjunction to talk about music like your music taste films art fashion wine maybe coffee we even use it sometimes to talk about partners
Like if you're single and you're dating, maybe you talk about your taste in men or your taste in women or your taste in a partner. Are there any other ways that we use taste that I haven't covered that maybe I didn't think of? No, I think you did a really good job at covering that. And also things to do with style, like you mentioned before, interior design as well, anything where you have to put things together, like in your home, decoration.
All of those types of things, we actually use it in loads of different categories. So it's a really useful phrase to know. I also wanted to teach everyone some adjectives that we use when we're talking about taste because... We have these two opposites. We have good taste and bad taste. And of course, we can talk about good taste and bad taste, but that's a little boring. And the English language has some really great adjectives that we could use for describing someone's taste.
So on the good side of things, we have these words like refined, refined taste or sophisticated taste or impeccable taste. And this just means really, really good taste. All of these. Adjectives are words that we would use to describe really high-level good taste. And then on the other side of the spectrum, for bad taste, we could describe it as maybe being gaudy. G-A-U-D-Y, gaudy taste. Or I love this one, Anna, questionable, questionable taste.
It's kind of a polite way to say somebody has bad taste, right? If I said, Anna, you have questionable music taste. Maybe it means like I don't really trust or I don't really think that you have good taste. And then we could also say tacky. As well, somebody has tacky taste, which just means that they don't really like something that's beautiful or fine or nice. It's more cheap and not so sophisticated.
So yeah, guys, some great adjectives that you can add to your vocabulary when you're talking about taste. But Anna, I want to throw it over to you and just a basic question here. I'm wondering in general. Do you think you have good taste? Well, I mean, I think everybody thinks they've got good taste, right? So I would say, of course, I've got good taste. But I mean, really, absolutely, absolutely not. I don't think I have good taste in a lot of things. For example, maybe with
Let's say with fashion and clothes, my taste has definitely changed over the last few years. But I have some friends who just, it doesn't matter, like they can just throw together an amazing outfit. They just have really good taste and I would never be able to pick the things that they buy.
So I don't think I have very good taste in that area or like home decoration. You know, it's like I can go to Ikea with a different person and they'll buy something that looks incredible and I'll buy something that doesn't. So I don't know. I think I have. I don't have good taste in that area. But I think I've got good taste in series, actually. I think I watch good series.
in comparison to other people and like for example if I watch a film or something like that and I think it's awful like I think some people have a terrible taste in movies for example There's some movies that people watch and I think how can you possibly watch that is so bad. I just don't even know how you can stay focused on that for like two and a half hours or an hour and a half. I'm just like, I can't do it.
So some people I know, some of my friends have like a terrible taste in films. So they'll be like, oh, Anna, why don't you watch this thing on Netflix? I'm like, yeah, there's no way I'm going to watch that because you've got terrible taste in movies. I'll skip that. Thanks.
Maybe I have good taste in some areas, but I think, I don't know, in some areas, definitely not. What about you, Andrew? Do you have good taste? You mentioned you had eclectic taste in music, which I think is a nice way of putting... putting it like varied and interesting what about in other areas yeah i think my taste in music and and uh again this question is a little bit stupid because probably most people like what they like and so
They're going to say, yeah, of course, I like what I like. I have good taste. My taste is perfect for me. And so, of course, everybody's taste is perfect for them. But in general, I do think that I have maybe a more... refined music taste because i really really love exploring different genres and finding out about new music and listening to many many different styles of music so in that way maybe i'm different than just the casual
music listener. So I do think that I have pretty good music taste. I also think the films that I watch, similar to you, Anna, I think I have good taste in movies and taste in TV. Although maybe I don't get to watch as many as I would like. I do think that when I do watch a movie, maybe I'm a little highbrow and highbrow means, you know, like I enjoy. the kind of TV and film that is designed to make you think a little bit more deeply about life. My wife has this great expression that she uses.
So sometimes she'll say, I'm going to watch this movie and I know it's stupid, but it's just for killing time. I'm just turning off my brain and I'm just going to relax and enjoy and watch this killing time movie. I think that's great from time to time. We all need to do that. But in general, I tend to sway the more thought-provoking kinds of movies and TVs and less towards the killing time movie and TV shows. Hello.
I can get down with a killing time movie from time to time. But I think in terms of film and TV, maybe I have good taste. In terms of fashion, I think I have... good taste, but no time or money to put it together. So as a result, I have bad taste. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, no, I know exactly what you mean. I know exactly what you mean. Yeah, of course.
I think if I had unlimited time and money to go shopping, then I would probably look really stylish. I think I have a good sense of what to put together. budget and time limitations i end up not looking very fashionable which is really painful because you're aware It's your self-aware, right? You're like, I know this outfit is not so great, but I can't do anything about it. So that's a little bit unfortunate. I'm also kind of a snob when it comes to coffee, and I don't like this.
about myself but i've developed into a coffee snob and so i think i'm starting to get a good sense of what delicious coffee really tastes like so yeah my taste in coffee is Unfortunately, I don't like this about myself, but I'm becoming a snob in that regard. There's nothing wrong with being a coffee snob, Andrew. And we have a phrase for that in English, right? It's life's too short.
for bad coffee or something like that, I think, which is what people say. And I completely agree. I'm like, if I go into a... a bar or a coffee shop because here in Spain it's quite common to have coffee shops which are more trendy and then you have kind of your standard bars and sometimes I think you know I would rather actually just not have a coffee.
than have a bad coffee. So I'm a little bit of a coffee snob as well, Andrew, which I have also developed over the last few years. I remember when I used to drink coffee, I started out drinking milk and then you would have like powdered coffee that you would buy in jars and I mean no shade if you if you drink that now it's everyone has different taste right or everyone likes different products but
I can't believe I used to drink that because it's so nasty. Like if I try and eat it, if I try eat it, no, if I try and drink it now, it's so gross. I'm happy that my taste has improved slightly over the last 10 years or so in terms of coffee. Yeah, and I don't know if you've ever heard of Tim Hortons before, but it's a famous... coffee shop and donut shop, but the food and the coffee especially.
It's like, well, so bad. And it's known as being like this famous coffee shop in Canada. And whenever I go to Tim Hortons and I try the coffee, I'm like, I just. can't do it how do people drink this stuff and i used to drink it all the time like when i was a student in canada that would be my go-to is go to timmy's and grab a coffee and i just thought it was normal and i probably would have said it was delicious at the time and now
Well, can't do it. So yeah, I've turned into a coffee snob. Absolutely on the same page with that. And going back to other taste areas, so films and series and things, it just popped into my head as well. My mum is watching this series called Ted Lasso. And it was just so... awful okay now sorry if you're listening to this and you've watched it and you think oh I love it because everybody has different taste but I was just like mom I can't even watch 10 minutes of this it's so
bad so if my mum says anything like oh I've been watching a new series and it's really nice I'm like yeah okay we have completely different taste in series and movies and films so I'm like I'm not going to take any recommendations from my mum And another adjective you could use with taste as well is weird. So my brother has a bit of a weird taste in movies. Like he's a big film buff. He loves films and movies.
If you say, okay, Tom, can you choose a film for us to put on? It's always a bit of a risky thing because, you know, he'll pick a very sort of... weird, obscure, offbeat film, which is not really sort of family friendly. So... He has quite a weird, eclectic taste in movies, which is very admirable, but not very mainstream, let's say.
And that got me thinking about something. And maybe we could transition with this question into the kind of the wrap up segment of this episode where we'll just sort of reflect on taste. And that is... Are you good at getting along with people who have a taste for... music or movies or anything really that really varies differently from your own taste. Do you have any experience like maybe one of your close friends or something having a really different interests and tastes than you do?
Sure. I mean, I've had friends and who have very different taste in, let's say, fashion or maybe in films or books or whatever. But for me, it's... Taste and personality are just not the same thing. So I think we're very quick sometimes to make a judgment based on somebody's taste. But for me, it doesn't reflect somebody's personality. We can have totally different taste.
in movies, but we can get along really well. So for me, it's not a barrier. For example, if somebody is like, oh, I really like this and they have a taste for this, maybe it just means that we can't connect on every single point. But for me, I don't know. I think people make judgments too quickly about people's tastes.
You know, it doesn't necessarily have to reflect somebody's whole personality. In fact, you could say that it's quite good to have people that have different tastes because they can introduce you to different things that maybe you hadn't thought about before. I remember I had a friend who was super trendy. She always used to have amazing taste in fashion. And it was great because I learned so much from her. She would be like, oh, why don't you put this together? Or why don't you buy this?
So actually, it can be really good to be friends with people that have different tastes because you can find new things and that can be really fun. Yeah, I completely agree. It's nice to have people that can introduce you to new things. And it's cool in that way when you have sort of a different background or a different set of things that you enjoy that you can share with each other.
But I'm trying to think, like, I have a lot of friends who have completely different tastes than I do. And some people like radically different music, radically different movies, radically different aesthetic.
style for like the clothes they wear and stuff and i think the end of the day is not really too important like if that's not the central part of the friendship then it doesn't matter to me of course if i went to like Maybe I wanted to join a book club and I joined the book club and I thought all of the other members of the book club liked books that I thought are stupid and they always want to read.
these stupid books, then probably I'd be like, this is not the book club for me because we just have totally different opinions about what good literature is, for example. But Outside of the book club, maybe those people would be awesome friends and wonderful and we could connect in different ways. So as long as it's not like the central focus of the friendship, then I think having different tastes is totally okay.
probably a good thing, as you mentioned. Although at the same time, it is nice to like bro down and connect over something that you both really enjoy. Of course, absolutely. And that's a really good point. But I mean...
I have to admit, if somebody said, oh, I just watched Ted Lasso and it was great. I loved it. I'd be like... really i'd be questioning i'd be questioning your taste but then i would of course it's funny right it's banter as well people that have different tastes you can kind of tease people about it and you can be like
oh my goodness, how can you possibly like that? So maybe I would make a quick judgment on the Ted Lasso, but then I'm sure I could let you off after it. No shade to Ted Lasso, by the way, my goodness. It's funny. I heard a lot of good things about that show. So I don't know. I haven't watched it myself, but just I've heard that it's quite funny. This is a thing. I think it's a conspiracy because I watched it and there's no way people find this funny.
Like there's just no way. I don't know. You guys have to maybe chip on on this if you've watched it. But I couldn't see it. And like you said, Andrea, I've heard loads of good things about it. It's got great reviews. Everybody's like, oh, it's fantastic. I was like, this is the worst series I've ever seen in my life. So I don't know. Maybe that says more about me than it does about the series. I'm not sure.
And I'll ask you one question here just to wrap up with a kind of funny question. But have you ever been embarrassed by something you like? You said that from time to time, maybe you could tease somebody about... liking something that you thought was not so good, but have you been on the receiving end? Has somebody teased you or made fun of you because of something that you liked that maybe didn't show off the best parts of your taste?
Well, I could think of one example, but this wasn't recent. This was when I was much younger. So when I was younger, I had a really odd taste. in fashion so I would put things together that were really strange so I went through a phase of wearing dresses over trousers now I'm not talking about like short dresses. I was talking about long dresses over trousers. Sorry to interrupt, but...
You mean over top, right? Yeah, over the top. Not that you prefer. No, no, no, no, over the top. No, that would be better. No, no, no. This was literally putting a dress over trousers. Kind of like wearing a sari or something like this, but...
I'm not really sure where that came from because nobody was doing it at the time. And I remember that people would kind of give me a bit of a weird look and I got a few comments from some of my friends at school like, you look weird like why are you wearing a dress with trousers yeah I don't really know where I got that from so but yeah that was one time that I got a little bit
people were saying sort of mean things about me, but I still wore it. I wore it for a few months. It was a phase that I went through. But yeah, I'm glad that my taste has improved somewhat since then. Very odd choice. I'm not really sure where that came from. What about you, Andrew? Yeah, I mean...
Depending on certain situations that you can find yourself in, maybe I could be a little bit embarrassed or feel like I'm being judged as a weirdo for some of the things that I like. I've mentioned on Q-Lips before that I'm a huge Bjork fan. but she's pretty out there she's cool but she's kind of an odd duck and for people who maybe aren't used to that style of music if they heard her or saw her perform they'd be like This is kind of weird. Andrew, why do you like her?
I also like a lot of just bubblegum pop stars. I love Taylor Swift. I love Beyonce. You know, I love Charlie XCX. In certain circles, like maybe my rock friends would be like, why do you like this kind of pop music. Like, come on. I thought you were a rock guy. So I don't know. It depends. Like when you're hanging out with people who don't really enjoy that thing and then you say, yeah, I love it. Then maybe you'd feel judged for liking it.
And maybe that would make me feel a little bit self-conscious. But I got to stick up for what I like. I think if I enjoy it, then it's okay. I shouldn't feel embarrassed about it. Exactly. And people in music can be very judgy because, like you said, people that have a very eclectic taste, a very specific taste or alternative taste.
If you say, oh, I like Taylor Swift, they're like, oh, you know, that's so basic or so obvious or whatever. But I think she's an incredible artist.
