Solomon now turns to work for meaning and as a result, all he experiences is weariness. The Gospel provides the rest beneath the work that we need in order to thrive and to fulfill our life’s calling. Christians don’t work for rest, they work from rest.
Solomon now turns to pleasure to find happiness because he’s found that there’s nothing bigger to live for. He doesn’t deprive himself of any pleasures yet finds himself as unhappy as he was at the beginning of his quest. Only by gazing in the beauty of God can one’s heart’s longings be satisfied (3:11). The beauty of God presents itself in its clearest form in the Gospel.
