Episode description

Indiana played much better last week, and despite losing to Penn State 33-24, there were finally some causes for optimism among the fans. Is what we saw sustainable? The Hoosiers will find out this week, as they host a Wisconsin team that hasn't exactly looked like a group of world-beaters. We discuss the lessons learned from last week, where Wisconsin may be vulnerable, and the three keys for Indiana going into Saturday's game.

Anyway, we're not going to go tremendously long today with the. The preview podcast but. Certainly some things to talk. About With this IU football team. And. Of course, the season, you know, maybe gets mildly interesting. Right when? Everybody decides that they're. Going to stop paying attention, which kind of?

Feels like it's. Happened. I mean the Penn State game. I feel like to some degree, people sat. Around in a bit of shock, watching Indiana play that game and thinking, wow. This is this. Is not what we are expecting. It's not what we're used to seeing. And was. Certainly one of those games where you look back. On it and. Certainly there was a. Lot of good that came out of that game. There's a lot. Of of little things and and again, I always recommend people. Go read.

Bite sized bison by Taylor Lehman. He did a really good job, I thought of highlighting. Some of the positive. Changes that seem to come from Indiana between. The previous week's loss to Rutgers. And and the win. Against Penn State. Now the problem is, of course, Indiana didn't actually win the Penn State. Game and the way that they. Lost it. Almost made the whole thing like. Weirdly discouraging. Because as close as Indiana came in. Keeping it alive throughout the.

Course of the contest, you get to the. End of it and. Indiana, essentially. Played for a tie, which didn't work. Out very well. As Penn State was. Able to drive down. The field score a touchdown, then a safety is. Tacked on to the end of it and that was it, but I think. You know, as as much as I think emotionally. And and. Just from the standpoint of like the attitude towards the team. It's easy to get fixated on that. Particular circumstance and get frustrated with it.

I do think that. It's it to be. Fair. You really need to focus on the. Overall effort, you know, we talked in the pregame. Podcast about IU just needs to. Compete we talked about. It in the Michigan game. There's no reason. You know and yes. Indiana's got a. Talent deficit, we know that. But there's no reason why Indiana can't be competitive in games, even against. You know, upper echelon competition in the big. 10 and. You know, they did it a little bit against Ohio State, although

it's. Ohio State's just. Such a weird team this year as. As good as they are, it's it's hard to know what to take seriously and what not. To. They didn't really compete. Very well at all in the Michigan game, but they competed in that Penn State. Game and I think that. You can look at. That and. It's hard to say with Indiana. What it will mean? Does it mean oh a leaf a new? Leaf has been turned over Indiana. Has figured some. Stuff out and they're going to be able to.

Ride that level of effort into this next. Game maybe. Maybe it does. Does it mean well? We've seen this show. Before from Indiana. They they'll occasionally get up and play well against. An opponent. And then they'll sink. Back into the background again the next week when they're not. Playing that opponent. It could mean that. Too, it's hard to. Say it really is. With this Indiana team. They are so. Hard to predict in terms of what? They're going to bring.

To the surface. And and how they're going to approach the game. You know, we talked about it, I think in the lead. Up to the last. Week and we. Talked about it, certainly. A little bit earlier. On this week in terms of trying to dissect what? Happened in that game. You look at what? Indiana did against Penn State and the effort that they had and the fact that they were in the game. Late in the fourth quarter. And you to some. Degree, You're like a.

It's a shame that. That effort got wasted. And Indiana, didn't you know, be a little more aggressive at the end. But the bigger one, I think for a lot of people, myself included. Was where was that effort the previous? Week in, a must win game at home against. Rutgers. Which if you'd? Won. Even if you lose that Penn State game closely, the whole. Tenor of the seasons changed and. You've still got a. Loss to play with. If you, you know, come with that. Type of effort.

Because I think that kind of effort. Would have likely beaten. Rutgers. And that's not what? Happened. And that's the hard thing. To really get your head wrapped. Around with this IU team is it doesn't. Make a lot of sense that Indiana would go out. And play that well against. Penn State after playing. So badly. Against Rutgers the previous. Week and that. Makes it really hard to figure out what they're going to do. In this next game.

You know, I I think that. You look at the statistics first of all. The, the. The. The computers really don't like. Indiana in this contest. Not as badly as Indiana was not liked in the previous. Contest and obviously the. Computers were wrong there. As Indiana was, was. Better than what they were projected to be. But Indiana? Is still a sizable underdog, S&P plus. Rates Wisconsin with an 82%

chance of victory. And a 17 point spread basically the betting line I think has been hovering somewhere. Between 9:00 and 10:00 on this game, it's. It's one of those deals where I think. You look at this team, you look at. The the matchups. Wisconsin's A. Slightly more favorable matchup then Penn State. Was at least on the the defensive. Side of the ball, And some of that has just been because Wisconsin's offense hasn't been. Very good this season.

Luke Fickle Who? Previously was the head. Coach at Cincinnati, IU fans? Very. Familiar with his work there after losing to him two games in a row. Fickle coming in and really. Trying to establish a. Different approach to playing the game of. Football for. Wisconsin and there's. There's quite a few growing pains. I mean, you know, Wisconsin. From an offensive perspective. Is just. Really. Really subpar in terms of passing game success. They're, they're I I think maybe

the only team in the. Big 10 Worse than Penn State in Terms of explosiveness. They don't score that many points per drive. They've they've turned the ball over a decent amount. They. They. They've been really good. Running the ball which? Is. I mean, of course it's Wisconsin. But just overall this is not. That impressive. Of a team. And they've they've. Without, you know, regardless of that, they've they've won a lot of games this year. And they've kind of done so.

In a way that has utilized their. Defense primarily. And you know the two. Games or the three? Games that they've lost were were very. Different types of games. From each other, they lost. Early in in the season at Washington. State They lost at home versus Iowa in a game. That is. It looks pretty bad if you're a Wisconsin team that is playing an Iowa team that just had to, essentially. You know. Force quit their offensive coordinator because they couldn't score enough.

Points and then you. Lose to Ohio State. And and that. Game was not a blowout by any means. But it was. Clear that Ohio State was just going to dominate that game, and there wasn't a whole lot that Wisconsin was going to be able to do in terms of offense. Over the course of. The full. 60 minutes and it's interesting. Like Indiana? Loses to Ohio State. 23 to 3. At home, Wisconsin loses to Ohio State. 24 to 10 at home. The. The. Games were not that tremendously different in terms of the

overall. Tenor of them. And you know, that's that's an interesting thing to think. About so this is the Wisconsin team that they they. Haven't scored a lot of points, They've only. Scored about 25 points a game. They've allowed about 19 points a game. And you know, and as I said. They've they've just not had the kind of success. Through the air that you. Need and and they've had to deal with. Injuries at that position? Tanner Mordecai. You know, started the.

Season and and then. Got injured and is out for the year. And so they've had to go to a. Younger quarterback and Braden Locke and when? While. He's looked fine and he's completing less than 50. Percent. Of his passes so far on the season. And then that's certainly not. Good. That's that's going to, I think. Be a real problem. For. Wisconsin in some other games that they play. You know you. Look at the last three games for for Braden Locke.

He's had to. Throw the ball a. Lot and he hasn't really completed. Nearly as many passes. As he would need to. Against Iowa, 50% completion percentage. Against Illinois, a game that they. Won I'll be at by only four points, 51.2% completion percentage and then a 40. 6% completion percentage. Against Ohio State? No shame in that. But it just. Demonstrates that Wisconsin's offense is not that. Awesome. Wisconsin's offense is going to struggle.

I think Braylon Allen, they're starting running back. Has had a pretty good year. He's breached the 100 yard mark 4 times on the season. At a rough. Week last week against Ohio State. But he's averaging 5. .8 yards per carry has scored eight. Touchdowns. And it's. Certainly going to be a bit of a problem for Indiana. Over the course of this game. So there's. Really. You know, I think there's three overarching questions for Indiana.

In this. Game. The first one is can Indiana. Stymie Wisconsin's offense. With the way that they're playing defense, you know the. Way the what? They showed against Penn State and Penn State. 'S kind of weird unwillingness to just keep. The ball on the. Ground is something that we might also. See out of Wisconsin. Because. You know, as we've seen, they've not had a lot of. Passing success, they. Were there with a freshman quarterback who is not completing enough.

Passes to justify the amount of throws that he's making. And yet the. Wisconsin looks very dedicated to trying to throw the ball. Because that's the offense. That they want to run. That kind of plays into Indiana's hands to some degree. Not that Indiana. 'S been tremendous against. The pass, but they've. Been better against the past and they've been against the run. And they've looked. Better against the run in recent games, or at least in the Penn State game they did.

Then then they did. Earlier in the season, so. That there may be some alterations being made there. So that's one question. You know because. If you're Indiana and you can keep Wisconsin from scoring. Then it really. Becomes a matter of the other two things, one of them. Is did Indiana? Find something in its. Offense that you could see them utilize in. Future games.

It's hard to know exactly what to take out of that game against Penn State because I. Think there's an optimist's perspective, and there's a. Pessimist's perspective. The optimist's perspective would be look, you know Brendan. Soresby actually looks pretty good in the pocket. He didn't throw as much as you might think that he would, given that he was, you know he. Only missed 6 passes in the whole game. He was 13 for 19. 3 touchdowns, 1 interception. 200 and. 69 yards.

It was a really good quarterback performance, probably, I think you. Can make an argument maybe the best. Start to finish quarterback performance. That Indiana's had since, I don't know. Maybe. Maybe Connor. Basilic last year versus. Maryland in terms of. Throwing the ball. They got a pretty good. Performance in terms. Of Josh. Henderson looked pretty good running the ball. Averaged almost 5 yards of carry. And you know they. They got some big. Plays they.

Had a 90 yard pass. To decrease Carter for a touchdown. They had a 69 yard pass to Donovan. Mccully for a touchdown. They they moved. The ball pretty well. So I think you can look at it from a positive perspective like that. You can also look at it negatively though, and you could say well look. Indiana lost that game 33 to 24. 14 of those points were busted coverage long. Passes. Frankly. The types of which we. Just don't see Indiana get a chance to score on that often

and. They almost felt like. Flukes to some degree. That's again, it's not meant to. Take away anything it is. Though meant to say that might not be. Replicable by any means. You know the idea that you're going to. Continue to get. Those types of plays that you're going. To get a 90 yard touchdown pass or 70 yard touchdowns. But I just I I we've seen. Nothing out of Indiana. This year that. Would make you think that. They're going to be. Able to consistently do that and so.

You know, great plays, certainly a. Congratulations and a a. Good job. And a pat on the helmet to Carter and Mccully and Soresby? It's just hard to see that. Being a formula that you can. Use again, so where? Does the offense come from? You know it is sores be able to methodically move. The team down the field against a a Wisconsin. Squad that is pretty good defensively overall, you know are. They are you. Able to find some. Success in the passing game.

Are you able to get the running game on track? Just a little bit and can you keep? Control of the ball. Because Wisconsin is pretty good at picking up turnovers, and Indiana hasn't been. That. Great in terms of not. Turning the ball over. So all that leads to the third question to me. Which is what are the mentalities of these two teams right now? I mean, for Indiana, you know Tom Allen and his. In the post game kind of press conference said something about

what we're in playoff. Mode, which I'm sorry if why were. You not in playoff mode last the last game against Rutgers. Like why would you save that for when your back is truly against the wall? That said. Indiana did play pretty well against Penn State. Are they legitimately in playoff mode? Is this a team that has seen the light in terms of wow, we have to compete at a certain? Level we still. Mathematically, have a shot. At a bowl. And if you win this game, it

doesn't seem. Impossible that you could. Win the last three. I'm not predicting it, I'm just. Saying it doesn't seem impossible. If you if you win this one, because this is the toughest game left on your schedule. And the other three teams. That are on your. Schedule are in various. Stages of of either. Falling apart or just so inconsistent? That you would never gamble on them if you were an. Intelligent person. You know, Illinois. What do you make of Illinois at

this point? I mean they. They had to buy. They had to go to Minnesota this week. Illinois's only averaging 20.4 points per game. You know, they they nearly. Lost to Toledo earlier. On this season, they only beat Florida Atlantic by 6. They've. They won at Maryland, which is a result that frankly makes zero sense, but it's an. Illinois team that's got one win in the Big 10. It's not, not.

Out of the question that Illinois could still have one win in the Big 10 when they play Indiana in a couple of weeks. Michigan State. Enough said. Purdue looks real. Bad. I mean Indiana. In AI don't. I don't know what FPI will rate it as or S&P Plus will rate it as, but in terms of like you. Know momentum. If you looked at the Penn State game and you thought, well, maybe. Indiana's. Got some juice? Then maybe you look.

At those other teams and you're like, well, you know, maybe we like Indiana's chances in some of those games. But I don't know what. Indiana's mentality is I really don't. You know. And I think that we don't know what's Wisconsin's mentality is either and that's. The big question mark for me, how does Wisconsin look at their? Season they've got. You know as, as. As. Friendly as the run. Out is for Indiana in terms of the. Schedule once you get past this Wisconsin game.

Wisconsin's last four. Games of the season are at Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska and at. Minnesota there's a team. That's five and three right now. And there's a big. Difference for a Wisconsin. Team that goes 8 and. Four or excuse me, eight and four if they were to lose to. Indiana or seven and five if they were to lose to Indiana and. Minnesota The Two Rd. Games. Versus A-Team. That went eight and. 49 and 3:00. You know, right now.

There's they're three and two in the conference and if you win. Four games. You've got a real chance if you're Wisconsin. Of getting to seven. And. Two on the season in the conference and. You know, right now, Wisconsin. Is as up and? Down as they've been. They're in a four way. Tie for the lead in the Western Division of the Big 10 and the. Teams that they're tied. With are. Iowa who?

They've lost to already. And that's a team that they're going to. Have to finish a. Game ahead of one way or another, Nebraska A team. That Wisconsin you know. Obviously plays later on this year and then. Minnesota, A team that they play later. This year as well. So they're very. Much in the thick of things. As far as potentially. Being a representative for the Big 10. West in the conference championship game. I look at this and I'm.

I'm very inclined to think that Wisconsin is probably going to come out with the more aggressive and sustainable. Attitudes. On the. Field because I think they they they. Have a lot more tangible things that they can accomplish if they win this game and it's not. Like Indiana has. Played particularly well historically. Against Wisconsin, I mean the last. Time they beat Wisconsin. I at home. In Memorial Stadium was 2000 and. Three. It's been a long time, unless

I'm missing. A game, and I don't believe that I am. Obviously, Indiana had the big win up at Camp Randall. During the COVID season, but. Wisconsin has been an. Awful opponent for Indiana to. Play across different coaches, across different eras. It's just it's not been friendly for Indiana. And so look, I think Indiana, as I as happens. Often. I think Indiana will come out in this game, and they will. Play well to start. I wouldn't be shocked if they. Had a a small.

Lead at halftime I. Just yet to see. Indiana really be able? To put together 2. Good halves. I've yet to see Indiana make halftime adjustments that put them in a position where they were the. Better. Team in the second. Half certainly they weren't. Bad in the. Second-half against Penn. State but they they just at the end of the day didn't do enough to win and all you. Have to do is go back a week earlier to the Rutgers game to see an Indiana team get.

Out of Justin at halftime. So look I. Look at this game. And I say ultimately. Indiana is they. They do have their backs against the wall. They do need to win. This game more than Wisconsin does. But I still think Wisconsin's got a lot of. Quality to it in terms of the talent and. I really do think. Indiana just has not. Demonstrated their ability. To get their minds. Wrapped around. The singular focus needed to win this kind of a game at this point in the season.

I won't. Be shocked if Indiana wins. And I do think Indiana is going to cover, but I don't think at the end of the day. That it's. Likely that Indiana wins and so I'm going to go. Wisconsin winning this? One and I think. It'll be a relatively. Close game throughout. I'm going to say Wisconsin wins this 123 to 17, you know? And I think it'll be another one of those games that's a bit frustrating for Indiana. It'll be another game where Indiana's offense really. Struggles to put the.

Kind of points on the board that you would need to win a game. Like this but. I think Indiana will compete in this one. I'll be very disappointed if they don't and I that is. It's kind of the subplot I've. I've got in my brain right now. It's like Indiana the last time they. Played a really good. Game. In in this season. Because I think. The Penn State game qualifies the last time they. Played a really good game. Was the game at? Lucas Oil Stadium against

Rutgers or Jeez against? Louisville. My sorry, I apologize. The game against. Louisville in Lucas Oil Stadium and what worries? Me about that, like you know, they didn't. They kind of no show in the first half. They came out, they played really well in the second-half and I think. There was legitimate excitement. About. The fact that Indiana might actually. Be good, you know. Because at that point. The evidence you had. Was well they played Ohio State close.

They blew out Indiana State and they played. Louisville close and. What worries me about? This team is that the very next thing that they did was they went out and they played Akron at home. And they were awful in that game. They were. They were so bad. In in in all. Phases and they were very lucky to come out of that game with a win, so it's hard for me to say. And feel confident. About the idea that they're going to. Go into this Penn State or come

out of the Penn State game and. Utilize the momentum to. Carry over and play. This next game. With the same. Level of quality. More often than not, Indiana tends under Allen, it happened under. Wilson as well. It happened. Under under Bill Lynch, Indiana does tend. To lower its approach or lower its competitive approach to. Whatever. The opposition is throwing out and sometimes it's a good team and sometimes it's a bad. Team but it's. Rare to see Indiana in a situation where.

They're really playing significantly. Above their their competitive. Or their competition. That's. What I would worry about here? So. Again I I got. Wisconsin by 6 in this one, I think Indiana probably covers again, but I think Wisconsin ultimately has the. Pedigree and the experience. In these circumstances. To come. Away with the victory. We did have a another question. We had a question.

From our discord from. Brandon, hypothetical question if we do manage to win out and make a bowl. Is there still the? Clause. In Allen's contract that extends it. By A. Year. Would that be better or worse for the program? So I believe that yes the the clause in the. Contract is the clause in the contract that if Indiana makes a bowl that the the contract's automatic extended. By a year. I don't think that has anything. To do with the. Buyout, which I think is what

you're asking about. But look, I'll say this if. Indiana wins out and makes. It to a bowl. That would mean that Indiana, after losing four games in a. Row almost losing to Akron. Would have finished the. Big 10 Season With. A four and five. Record would have. Two Rd. Wins would have a bucket win. Would have a win against Wisconsin and would. Be playing in a bowl game and look I'm. I've been as frustrated. With Tom Allen and and this coaching staff as anybody.

But realistically? Speaking a bowl win or. Even just a bowl. Appearance and A and a. Win against Purdue on the road. That's. Absolutely good for the program. You know I. So much of. What We've talked. About on This Podcast comes down to Can Indiana sustain something? Or can they build something? Can they? Put themselves in a. Position where you know. There's there's a clear pathway forward for the team to be. Respectable. That's all. I'm looking for.

I think it's all most IU. Observers are looking for and. If you, I mean if people. Forget you know the. First Kevin Wilson bowl. Year. In 2015 that. Team won four games in A. Row to start the. Season then lost six games. Then won the last. 2. Including winning at Purdue to guarantee a bowl win. It would be a. Similar kind of thing in this case and that would. Absolutely be a good thing. For the. Program and I know. People are completely. Burned out. On Tom Allen.

But if Tom Allen can rally this team? With as many holes as it has. To four wins in their. Last four games and make. It to a bowl. I don't see how that's bad for the program. You get recruits that way. You get attention that. Way you get extra practice that way and maybe it maybe you demonstrate well, gosh. You know we. We're the wrong coordinator and and look. Alan hired that wrong. Coordinator, but we we went out and made a change and we got the right.

Coordinator we started doing. Things. In a way that contributes to. Success. Got the defense sorted again. You know that's a. That would be positive momentum. I don't. Expect it to happen. There's a much. Greater chance Indiana's going. To lose out than there is. Indiana's going to win their last four, but I hope that. Answers the question. For you, a couple other things real. Quick here, questions wise, Matt asks. What should we expect? At the quarterback spot. Moving.

Forward are we? Doomed to the hot hand. That's a good question. You know, I think ultimately. Right now, I think they'd be. Foolish to do. Anything to disrupt, Brandon. Soresby. Starting to round into shape as a passer, I still don't understand. Why they the offense? Is that Indiana's wanted to run. Why they made the choices? They made at quarterback, not. Just the starter decision. But also just the. Way that they decided. To attack the transfer. Portal and and.

So on and so forth. But I look, you have a quarterback who doesn't really make a. Lot of mistakes in the game. You know, I had one mistake that was pretty bad and. Was able to have a. 13 for 19. Game, you know, completed. A couple of passes. That certainly had a lot of yak on them. That's yards after catch I think most. Of you know that. You need to let that guy. Season a little bit. Let him marinate out there in the pocket. Let him make some mistakes.

Let him make some good plays, I don't think. That you should ever again. If you get any if. You as long as. You don't get a. Disastrous game out of Soresby. I don't see why you would change at this point after that kind of a performance so. That would be my thought. I don't know if I mean that's. What I think they should do. I I. Who knows, though? I think the problem is Allen and his coaching staff have proven. To be so mercurial in the way.

That they handle their. Quarterbacks that it's. Hard to trust. That they will make. That kind of a. Decision properly. I'm I'm a lot more concerned. About the possibility. That they would create. More problems by. Too. Hastily deciding to go. To a Dexter Williams or go back? To Tavin Jackson. Because it just doesn't. Seem to be a clear sense after the course. Of the last. Couple of years from Allen and his coaching staff. That you need to let the quarterback kind of grow into

the role, especially a young. Quarterback like Soresby and look, I said the same thing about Tavin Jackson. I thought Tavin Jackson should have been given a longer runway. Given his youth. Given his inexperience and given how. Screwed. Up The offensive approach has been to this team for most of the last couple of seasons, but. We'll see. What happens I I've given up trying to predict what Indiana's going to do. With some of this.

These these personnel decisions. And quarterbacks, probably. The biggest one? So. Anyway, good couple of. Questions there and. We'll look forward to getting your questions. You can always. Leave us some questions on the. The sub stack. As well we've got. A Nice. Community going there and you can always send questions in. Via X or Twitter. Or whatever you call it these.
