Welcome to another episode of the crazy Reddit Stories podcast. It's been a while since the last episode of season one. Starting this season off with a banger. This story is about a person finding out their partner is cheating on them with their best friend. Let's get into the episode. So yeah, I accidentally slept with my best friend and that's how I found out my girlfriend was cheating on me. No, not sleeping. This was a total accident.
But it's one of those things I still can't wrap my head around even months later. Here's what went down. It was a Friday night and my girlfriend Emily was supposedly out of town for a work retreat. She does these trips fairly often because of her job. So I didn't think much of it when she packed her bag that morning and said she'd be back late Sunday night. That left me with an open weekend. So I hit up my best friend Jake to hang out. Jake's been my ride or die since high school.
He's the kind of guy who always knows how to have a good time but also doesn't take life too seriously. Sometimes to a fault. Anyway, Jake comes over around 8pm. We grab some takeout, crack open a bottle of whiskey and just hang out. We played some video games, made fun of each other for how bad we were and eventually started one of those deep drunken conversations where you solve all of life's problems or at least think you do.
By the time we looked at the clock, it was past 2am and we were absolutely hammered. Jake wasn't in any condition to drive and I wasn't about to call him an Uber when I had a perfectly good couch right there. Just crash here, I told him. He shrugged and grabbed a blanket while I stumbled off to bed. I remember falling into my own bed and thinking I was done for the night. But apparently my body had other plans.
At some point in the middle of the night, I woke up groggy and in desperate need of the bathroom. The whiskey was still hitting me hard and I could barely walk straight. After relieving myself, I somehow ended up walking into the wrong room. Instead of going back to my bedroom, I stumbled into the guest room where Jake was already passed out. But in my half asleep, drunk in haze, all I registered was bed. So I flopped down, curled up and knocked out again.
Morning rolls around and that's when things got weird. I wake up feeling cozy. Like really cozy. There's an arm wrapped around me and someone spooning me. My first thought was, Emily must have come home early. I didn't even open my eyes. I just mumbled, morning babe, and shifted a little closer. That's when I heard it. A very groggy, very not Emily voice. A dude froze. My brain short circuited. I opened my eyes, turned my head and came face to face with Jake.
He looked just as freaked out as I felt. For a solid five seconds, neither of us said anything. We just stared at each other like deer caught in headlights. Finally, I yelled, what the hell? And rolled off the bed so fast I almost fell over. Jake sat up, rubbing his face like he was trying to figure out if this was real life or a bad dream. And then, because Jake is Jake, he started laughing. Not just chuckling either. He was full on dying. Meanwhile, I was standing there mortified and yelling.
Why are you laughing? This isn't funny. Through his stupid laugh, he managed to choke out, you're mad at this, but you should really be mad at Emily. That stopped me in my tracks. He was like, what the hell are you talking about? And that's when he dropped the bombshell. She's cheating on you, dude. Thought he was messing with me. Like this was some twisted way to deflect how awkward the situation was. But then Jake sat up, dead serious, and started explaining.
He told me he'd seen Emily out with some guy a few times when she was supposedly working late or out of town. At first, he didn't think much of it. He figured it might have been a co-worker or a friend. But then he saw them at a bar one night, full on, making out in a booth. And again at a restaurant, holding hands like they were a couple. When were you going to tell me this? I yelled. Jake looked guilty for a second and said, I didn't know if I should.
I didn't want to blow up your relationship unless I was 100% sure. But now seemed like a good time. Didn't know what to do. Part of me wanted to believe Jake was wrong. That there was some innocent explanation. But deep down I knew. I'd had this weird feeling for weeks. Emily had been acting distant, always glued to her phone, and coming up with excuses for why we couldn't hang out. I just didn't want to admit it. Right there in the guest room, I texted Emily. I didn't even try to play it cool.
I just wrote, when are you coming home? We need to talk. She responded almost immediately, saying still at the retreat why. What's up? That's when I hit her with, cool. So who's the guy you've been sneaking around with? No response. Nothing for a solid 10 minutes. Then my phone rang and it was her. I picked up and all I heard was her breathing. Like she was trying to figure out what to say. Finally she whispered, how did you find out? And just like that it was over. She admitted to everything.
Apparently she'd been seeing this guy from her office for months. I didn't mean for it to happen, she said. I was going to tell you, but I didn't know how. Hung up without another word. I couldn't even process it. Jake sat there awkwardly, probably wondering if he should leave or stay to make sure I didn't lose it. Eventually he said, hey man, for what it's worth I'm sorry. But look on the bright side, at least you didn't find out in some dramatic way. Just glared at him.
Jake, I woke up in bed with you and found out my girlfriend was cheating. How is this not dramatic? We ended up laughing about it later. While mostly Jake laughed. It was the dumbest, weirdest, most surreal way to discover my relationship was a lie. But in a way I'm glad it happened. If Jake hadn't told me, I probably would have kept ignoring all the signs.
So yeah, I accidentally slept with my best friend, platonically, and woke up to find out my girlfriend was cheating on me. 10 out of 10 would not recommend, but at least I've got one hell of a story now.
