HENRI NKUEPO The story begins with Marco Polo, the Venetian explorer who wrote about a distant, mysterious land called 'Cipangu' C. I. P. A. N. G u. In his travel account during the 13th century. 'Cipangu' was Polo's interpretation. of what he had heard about Japan from Chinese sources. The name itself is believed to have been inspired by the local Japanese word, Nihon. Meaning Land of the rising sun. The name Nihon reflects Japan's geographical position east of China, where the sun rises. The Chinese referred to Japan using similar terms, and the pronunciation evolved as it traveled through different languages. By the time European encountered Japan through trade and exploration. Marco Polo’s 'Cipangu' morphed into Japan, the name we know today. It's a fascinating linguistic journey that bridges, cultures and centuries.
