From Relay FM, this is connected Episode 500! 500, 510! 510, that's the... Relay's a special shout! By that's it, jam, square space, express VPN and listen as like you because in episode 500 my name is Mike Hurley I'm joined by Federico Viteci. Hello, hi, ciao, it's good to be here. We're also joined for this very special episode of Connected by Mr. Steven Hackett. Hello, Steven. Hello, boys. Can you believe it that we've done this thing for like half a thousand times? I know.

I don't like it when you say it like that. Half a thousand. Half a thousand times we've said, you know, welcome to Connected, you know, we've said our names half a thousand times. You know, we've done it all, like 500 times we've been on this fun informative, silly, the greatest show in the world after all, you know. We're celebrating a lot of things this year, it's the year of celebrations and I like the episode 500 is amongst all of that, you know. What's wild is another 57 episodes.

There will be 10 times the number of episodes of Connected and the War of the Prop. I don't like that either. That number was like, oh, I want to do this long time. Well, we should start with follow up. Do we have a show besides the fact that we are celebrating 500 episodes? No, that's it. Thanks a listen to everyone. Bye. Bye, bye now. Follow up. Follow up. I was out last week. Jason was out last week.

I know an upgrade he talked about it, but we worked together along with Casey Liss and Mike Cossgt and Kathy Campbell and MVO, who's one of our moderators on discord and one of our discord members. We were at St. Jude last week as part of a conference. St. Jude works with a lot of content creators and a bunch of those people work together and we got to hang out for a week, see the campus here from a bunch of people doing great work at St. Jude.

Casey just straight up announced this and this is blog post, which I love. He is going to be joining us on the podcast with on as a host this year. It was good to have your blog post you announced the date. So you know, everyone's announcing things. Everyone's announcing things. So yeah, the blog posts. Yeah, blog blogs are where it happens. Yeah, I mean, yeah. Yeah, blog blog the open web the open. It's like a deep and open framework, but for websites, but for websites.

So if you haven't seen this blog post, go check it out. I am psyched about September, but September will come in its own time. Before that, Mike, there's some Delta news. Yeah, so me and Federico spent a lot of time talking about the Delta emulate the last week and we were having conversations about like. If or what was next for the emulate them, Federico, you seemed like you're like, oh, this has been going up for so long. This is probably just going to be.

But it turns out that that's not the case. This is because of the success of Delta or not, but Riley tested one of the guys behind Delta posted some posts on master on. One is that they're working on a visual overhaul for the iPhone app. They're making a little bit more modern and refined feeling, but also that there is an iPad version coming, which looks. Just fantastic. Like it looks fantastic. So I'm very excited about that, especially the iPad version.

It looks like they have built a keyboard or something, like some kind of UI element that you can use it in split screen and still get the controls. It looks really interesting. It's a custom keyboard and I think it's a really clever idea for a custom keyboard too, so that you can use Delta on the iPad in split view, but still have the controls and have the two screens in the case of a DS on the other side.

And the keyboard, of course, with the way that iPadOS works, sort of an auto-lay out and all that kind of stuff automatically resizes and lays out again the interface. So you can have this custom keyboard with the controls at the bottom and in split view, Delta above the custom keyboard. It's really a genius implementation of a technology custom keyboards that's been around since the days of iOS 8.

And we're coming up on the 10th anniversary of custom keyboards and I can probably count maybe two that are actually good. How are we looking to celebrate the decade of custom keyboards? Yeah, I'm sure Stephen, make a calendar. I'm paying those off custom. What if I secretly release underscores emoji keyboard? Oh my God. Emoji plus or plus? Oh, there was the one. Wow. Wow. Blossom the plus. Yeah. Don't worry, David. I'm not going to do that.

I am sort of surprised that David hasn't put you in charge of the company's sort of software preservation efforts. Someone give him a new job. Someone give him a new job. Do you know how many apps that man has made? It would. Yeah, you should make a, you should make a like a screenshot like I just spent the weekend of underscore. We went hiking. I think much to Steven's dismay is both of his people that he works with. We're just climbing mountains. My work, my work daddy's.

Steve and they've been talking behind your back. 100% business partner and your new boss. They've been talking behind your back. I can imagine though, underscore had only good things to say. That's nice. You know, but he was mentioning just two conversations and an absolute like I don't even know existed that looked something he's worked on. I love the idea. I mean, Dave, you can choose if you want to even to welcome this or not, I guess of you at some point like this is the history.

Oh, that'd be so good. That'd be so good. Yeah. Yeah. Moji plus plus, I just found the Federico Viteci review here on Mac stories and show notes. Nice. Steve, whenever you put a task into the list about this, no, no, I've not. Okay. I'm just bracing for a GitHub issue to open with my name on it. The iPad has joined the European Union. Yeah, I bet it's free. The average free now. Free, and the shackles of Phil Schiller. Yes. What's going on here?

So the European Union essentially added iPadOS as a gatekeeper and Mike had an excellent explanation and discussion with Jason on the latest episode of upgrade about this essentially and correct me from run mic. The idea right now with the European Commission is that the iPadOS like regular users do not cross the threshold of what should be considered. What's the terminology like a gatekeeper gatekeeper. But the business customers do.

And so the European Union is sort of preparing and sort of arguing that tons of business users are already locked into iPadOS and the regular users, sort of like non business customers are possibly about to cross that threshold. And so they, I don't want to say that they made an exception to just say, let's roll iPadOS into the iOS as a gatekeeper, but that's essentially what they have done. So iPadOS Apple will have six months to comply and basically do the things that they have done with iOS.

So third party marketplaces, third party browsers, the court technology fee, all the things that they've done on iOS, they will need to do on iPadOS as well. Realistically, I guess this means that this will happen in iPadOS 18 later this year, quite possibly not even in the first version of 18, but maybe 18.1 or something, because six months would be in October and typically Apple releases software updates in September.

So it's possible that iPadOS 18.1 will have the DMA functionalities that the EU requested. And this also means that the Epic Games Store, for example, will be coming on the iPad. And for tonight, I believe Epic has already announced that Fortnite in addition to launching on the iPhone in the near future at some point will also be releasing on the iPad later in 2024.

So if you play Fortnite on the iPhone via the Epic Games Store at some point on your phone, you will be able to carry over your account, I guess, later in 24 on the iPad too. And of course, all store all these other companies that are working on third party marketplaces, they will be able to make them available on the iPad as well. All good news if you live in the EU and you are an Apple customer, I guess.

Yeah, my view on this is that they the European Union seem to have kind of like, they've bent their rules here, like they've decided they want this, which I agree with, like I agree with the idea of them putting this in there, but it is very much just like, you know, that's just throw the iPad into and so they've done that. And so here we are. It's just ironic after all these years, it's the EU that says you can do real work on an iPad.

Yes, I mean, I think Federico said on mastodon, like they found the one person who truly cares about the iPad and they are impacting Europe, you know, the one person who actually cares as Federico said is in Europe and they've decided, I'm happy that it's going to be there because it's going to make that experience better for European Union customers.

Like, so if you're thinking of something like, what's that that keyboard manager, Federico's it clip clip, yeah, yes, single want that to work on your iPad, right, if you're used to having a work on your iPhone and now that will be a possibility, including delta for iPad, right.

So they won't have to make a separate app for EU customers now that be able to make that available in that marketplace in the European Union as well. So this is a good thing. It's just to me, very funny that they're just like, yeah, this this complies now to why, you know, it's going to some point is just like a very funny thing, but I appreciate it. I like this way of getting things done.

This episode of connected is brought to you by jam, if you're a web developer and you work on a team, you'll know that sometimes your teammates will send you bug reports, but they have very little context like maybe it's just a short text description with no screenshot or console log or user ID.

So instead of fixing the issue, you now get to spend time with the person who made the ticket to hunt down the right information, you're going to go back and forth over weeks in the ticket or on Slack, trying to figure out if there's a local storage API to blame the response from a network request cookies at the time, a time zone issue, it goes on and on.

It's really frustrating when you're trying to figure out what actually went wrong. You might have heard of jam, it's used to more than 90,000 people and that's because it's a free tool that saves web developers and designers a ton of time and frustration. It ensures your teammates make the perfect bug report every time. They literally can't do it wrong. It automatically includes a video of the bug, console logs network request, all the information you need to debug.

Like what was the internet speed of the time and even automatically list out the steps to reproduce the bug on your end. It's so easy to get your teammates to use it because jam is just a chrome extension. When they see a bug that is click a button and right away it creates a ticket in your issue tracker. So it saves time for them and it saves time for you. So you're not hopping on calls and meetings to debug.

So if you're a web developer and you would rather spend your time writing code, then we spying to comments in your issue tracker, send your team over to jam.dev. That's J-A-M.DeV. Jam.dev is a link in the show notes. I thanks to jam for their support of the show and relay FM. Apple was very gracious to hold their iPad news until episode 500 so we could make our picks. This is normally the time where we would be reading the rules.

But we have some special AI generated music from our friend James Thompson sent us this and so we're going to let the robot take it from here. It's down for the reading of the rules. We were used by the hosts to make them for the next keynote. For the annual Ricky's hosts are forbidden from choosing any pick. They're named to drink a previous calendar year. Additionally, picks may not be used back to back and will Ricky's by the same host. Oh oh so are allowed to reuse picks made by others.

The recording is completed during recording. It cannot be modified once an episode is done. The event of a tie. Dice by peacock must be used and relay FM. Oh, to pick a winner. In the case of a three-way tie. Also made their calls at the same time. We're flipping cut to ring into a winner's name. Jesus Nell has a lifetime pen on flipping any coins in relation to the Ricky's coin flips by chasing on other podcasts.

The last song allowed but I found upon a subject to public shame and forging off Ricky's the score and with those starts when the live stream begins and closes when the picks are scored. Any information used in scoring must be publicly verifiable at the time of recording. The order of picks is set by previous performance. The winner of the previous associated can goes first. The previous loser goes last. When is the one making knives during the closing ceremony?

The winner of the previous performance is the one making knives during the closing ceremony. The winner of the previous performance is the one making knives during the closing ceremony. Okay, are we back? Did everybody survive that? We're back. So there's something poetic about the fact that for episode 500, we're being replaced by AI and you specifically Stephen are being replaced by AI.

Here we are. Well, the AI hasn't made any picks yet. That's still us. So let's go to round one Federico. You are first because you won the last event. Oh, I did. Wait, what was the last event? The sip? No, what's the Mac one? It was the Mac one. Yeah, Mac one. Yeah, so we must all salute our chairman. Congratulations. Federico. Yes, what's what's my name? What's my name for for when I win?

Just the chairman right now. That's the chairman. It is not names for this part. Did you not hear the rap? Isn't that isn't that how people call John Gruber the chairman? Now I'm the chairman. Okay, in my mind, you've always been the chairman. Oh, thank you. You're so sweet. All right. So my number one pick. The new iPad pros come with a new to the platform display technology.

So the idea being that we all know that this new iPad pros both the 11 inch and the 13 inch will have OLED displays. Now I don't want to specifically mention the word OLED in the in the phrasing of the pick. Because Apple may for example, they didn't call the current iPad Pro display. A mini LED display. It's a liquid right now XDR display. But we all know it's a mini LED panel. I'm just thinking that maybe Apple will have a fancy name for this display technology as well.

I'm expecting that both iPad models will get it. And I just want to kind of ask you guys do and especially Mike Mike is good with words with these things. Do you have any possible names that Apple may call the display instead of like iPad Pro with OLED, which is literally one Nintendo Nintendo did it like they literally called the Nintendo switch OLED when they did that. But maybe Apple will do it. Well, I my expectation is it will match the iPhone convention for the name. What's it called?

What's it called? The super retina XDR display. Super right next. I'm expecting it with the same because in theory, right. It's OLED and it will be promotion. Right. I forgot that it's liquid retina on the iPad and super right now on the side. And it's weird. Right. So what's what's the what's the tier like is it liquid?

Liquid, super many many LED maybe and super is OLED liquid retina is LCD or I guess that one 13 inch iPad super retina XDR. I believe is only used for OLED. I like how we're trying to make sense of this because these names are ridiculous. But yeah. And XDR is only on the 12.9. So the 12.9 currently is the liquid retina XDR display.

And the 11 is just a liquid retina display. So I guess XDR now means promotion because it's extreme dynamic range, right. Which I know the XDR part sorry that is the mini LED part. Right. Yes. Yes. So hilarious. They both have promotion though. Oh my god. Right. Okay.

So XDR is extreme dynamic range and that's not many LED provides right and that's why the 11 is doesn't have it because it's just got like a standard HDR display. So yes, I would expect super retina XDR would be the will be the name. Okay. So super right XDR. So once again, my number one pick is the new iPad pros come with the new to the platform display technology.

Because obviously all ed is already on the iPhone. Can I I don't think that this is a pick at least it's not in this part. So I was asking you now and either of you can tell me to to cook rocks until later on. What do we still think there is the possibility of like a matte display option. Oh, yeah. I think I think it's an extra as I can actually. Yeah, to get your iPad up to $4,000 or something. Yeah, why not, right? Why not and still use stage manager with four windows on it. Yeah.

At least you won't get any glare, you know, sharing those windows. Right. Because when you're using stage manager, the problem is the glare. Yeah, not stage manager. Like that's the problem. The glare. So if you like if the glare hits the wrong part and like you got your window there. Oh man, you can't see it. Move it. Right. Right. Right. Okay, Stephen, you're up. Apple updates its pro apps for the iPad.

Okay, I'm going to need some clarification here. Like what pro apps and for the iPad font that that's final cut logic. Okay. I can say updates, final cut pro or logic for the iPad. If you want me more specific, that would be better. But also just wanted to know some context. Like what do you mean updates? Like during the event they say like if they just say we're also working on an update that does such and such. But they just announce it. It's not out yet. So technically they have enough.

See, I think you're I think you're you're cutting that too close. What I mean is now. So I that these iPads aren't going to ship on the seventh. These updates would probably ship when the iPads do so. Okay. And now that's fine. Update. That's fine. Look, I think there's going to be new Silicon of these things we can debate later. What that means none of us went real hard on what chip it'll get.

I'm sure they go want to tell the scoreless. Oh, I did. That's way down here. Way down here in the document. And so I think you know and it's been a minute since we've heard about these apps. So I think they're going to have something something there. Okay. So can you read your peak again? Apple announces updates for final cut pro and or logic for the iPad.

Okay. All right. Nongrated just kind of want to know what you're thinking. Any ideas? What what these updates? Maybe. I mean, you use logic, right? I have. I do. I've known the iPad though. I have some thoughts in this in the flexi. So stay tuned. Okay. Okay. Right. So it starts. Yes, thoughts. Okay.

My first round pick is that the iPad pro features a camera on the horizontal bezel. Yeah. Yeah. I hope so, man. I really hope so. I hope you're right. I was thinking about this. I was wondering about this. This is potentially going to be a pick, but just felt boring. They'll probably rotate the Apple logo too if they do that, right? Oh, yeah, because now it's a landscape. Did they do that on the 10th gen?

Let's see. I'm spending a lot of time on the Apple website during today's episode. Yeah. I'm just looking at various text specs and images. Oh, probably I go to the store. No, they did not. They did not do that. Okay. The Apple logo is still in the portrait. So maybe they won't. Maybe they won't. But I feel like they could. Especially on the pro, right? Like that thing is a laptop replacement for most people.

Yeah, because the magic keyboard has it that way, doesn't it? Like the magic keyboards logo is on landscape, which makes sense because if you attached a magic keyboard and use your iPad and portrait, you're a monster. Yeah. Are you? But why would you then the keyboard is just like hanging out there? No, I'm just saying some people have devised solutions to use not with the magic keyboard, but like using I there are benefits to using an iPad.

Oh, I know I'm not saying that. I was like, hey, look, pulling out for everyone's favorite keyboard, the original iPad keyboards stand. Right. There's a benefit for a portrait. I've had any keyboards. You get a longer display. I just mean that Apple's magic keyboard. If you're ever using your iPad and portrait, while that thing's attached, that's big forearm strength.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I hope you're right. I hope they figure out the face ID situation, the Apple pencil charging situation there. Somehow, I have no idea how because I'm not an engineer, nor do I work at Apple. I just know that. Yeah. Didn't you know, I don't I feel like that has to be a solution to this problem. Yes, I'm not saying, you know, it's probably not going to be an easy solution, but there is a solution.

And if they design from the ground up, but the product to be that way, I'm sure they can make it work. Knowing Apple knowing Apple that I wouldn't be surprised if they come up with like some incredible solution where the face ID module is also. A magnet for the Apple pencil. Yeah, because like here you're trying people over the past couple of years have sort of gotten stuck on these idea about how do you fit to components in the same spot where you need to have both face ID and charging.

And knowing Apple, I wouldn't be surprised if if their answer is what who says they need to be two components. What if it can be one component that does both things? What about three components? Like what I'm saying, the face ID and the camera don't need to be next to each other. They just are right. Like the face ID sensor is not the camera.

Yeah. So they could put the if the face ID sensor was the problem, they could put that somewhere else in one of the other bezels and they just have the camera on the logical place for it to be. There are tons of options like I think available to them. I'm intrigued to see what they're going to do. I'm also like there are rumors that the bezels are going to get thinner and that I just I don't understand how that's going to happen.

If it needs to happen and if it does how on earth they fit any camera in that things going to be intriguing me. I maybe again, I want his little pop out cameras remember when that was the thing when the phone was. Where the camera would rise out of the phone. That was a good time. That was good. That was good. That was good. Okay. So a read your pick again, Mike, please.

The iPad pro iPad pro features a camera on the horizontal bezel. Perfect. All right. And that's the end of round one. We're going into round two for regular picks. And I'm going to go first again. My pick is Apple unveils a redesign keyboard accessory for one of the new iPads. So yeah, obviously we are expecting we are expecting both iPad pro and iPad Air. I am not convinced.

There are so there's some debate about this idea that the Apple is making a new keyboard and it sounds like it's going to be more laptop like maybe made of aluminum sort of keyboard. And some people believe that keyboard is going to be compatible with all models of iPad announced next week. Whereas I personally think it's going to be a pro only accessory, but we'll see.

In any case, I'm expecting a redesign magic keyboard essentially. I am not convinced that this is going to replace the magic keyboard from 2020. I wouldn't be surprised if the magic keyboard stays around at a lower price point and Apple is announcing this is not my pick. I'm just explaining, providing context. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple comes up with a magic keyboard pro that's more expensive and more laptop like and enables additional features as well. See later in my risky pick.

So this big the way that I wrote it down sort of accounts for that scenario where there's a redesign keyboard accessory for one of the iPads because maybe it's only an iPad pro accessory. We have a potential problem. For the annual 2024 rickies. Oh, no, you said the keyboard for iPad pro is substantially redesigned for the first time since introduction in 2020. I did not remember. So I think your pick is an outgoing to search too. I forgot. Can you read that again?

The keyboard for iPad pro is substantially redesigned for the first time since its introduction in 2020. I think if you were to give this pick some detail, then it would steer clear of being a repeat. But I think as it stands now, I think you're a little too close to your previous one. Yeah, no, I think I'm going to pick something else. Why don't you go ahead, Stephen, with your pick, and I'm going to think something.

I'm going to go around again. I love it. Yeah. And to be fair, I also forgot about the Inesible picks as I didn't read the rules, but Jason award winning shortcutter and the discord and the editor in chief of Wikipedia, Wikipedia, quiz, a pdf, sent me the Inesible picks document. Mine. Oh, that's good. So you can just, you can just let us know here. Right. Thank you. The new iPad air comes in the current iPad pro sizes 11 inch and 12.9 inch. You know, I like to speak. I think it's fine.

You got a potential problem, I think. Okay. She's this bezels getting smaller. Oh, yeah, with the numbers. That might, it might be 13. They might do it. It could be, so I did consider that. Yeah. And just my thought process. And we'll see if I'm right or not, is that the iPad air is going to basically inherit the iPad pro design, which would mean the iPad air has slightly smaller bezels than it does today, but it would be the same as the iPad pro is today.

And the new iPad pro that even smaller bezels. So I am threading that needle with this, but I think I really think the iPad air guys, I really think it's a recycled iPad pro design. Maybe with some colors. I was, I was confusing that my mind, but the bezels for the pro. Yes. The, the pro might go to 11 and 13 or whatever.

Yeah, oh, definitely. I could definitely be 11 and 12.9. Even though I've said for years, they should just, it's fine. Just round it up. Like it should have, they should have been 11 and 13 inch iPads for a long time. But yeah, that's all right. Yeah. So that's, that's fine. What about yours, Mike? So my second round pick is the iPad pro has a higher starting price for both models. So this is potent. Personally, and I don't want to change your mind. I'm just saying this is potentially risky.

I don't need to say both. Like I feel like I could just say one, but I'm just going to go for it anyway, because I want the passion. I really have developed passion already. Yes. Yes, I definitely have. As I've gone on older, my passion has increased. And I do feel like the intro, like having the iPad air, but essentially the iPad pro, right, gives them the ability to add more. They're doing that.

The OLED screens are going to increase the prices in my opinion. They, or at least they will use this as an opportunity to increase the prices of the iPad pro. So I just see them doing that. I think that I don't think it's going to be like, remember those rumors where it's like the iPad was going to cost like $9,000.

But I can imagine something like a 50, $100, $200 price increase for the iPad pro that will one help them, you know, make more money from it as they're making it more expensive. And two, we'll push out that product line a little bit from each other. So there could still be some sense for some person people as to why they would choose an iPad air over my iPad pro because there is a great to price delta between the two.

Federico, have you recovered? I do have a new round two pick, which is Apple unveils a new Apple pencil. Obviously, it's right there in the event invitation artwork. And we are expecting an Apple pencil three or whatever is going to be called. I saw this wild rumor on Reddit of all places. I mentioned this on app stories. It's this rumor from a telegram channel that was based on a translated post from the Chinese social network, Webo.

So imagine the game of telephone there. That it's going to be called the magic apple pencil. The magic pencil. Interesting. But I don't know. I'm just going to say Apple unveils a new Apple pencil. And non graded. I would expect that this pencil has for sure, like a support for gestures, sort of like AirPods, where you can maybe squeeze the pencil to perform additional features.

Or maybe it's a programmable thing that you can configure in settings. And I also, and again, non graded, I also, I'm fascinated by the idea of haptic feedback that we saw reported over the past couple of weeks. So the idea of like when using a brush tool, for example, maybe you get certain type of feedback. Whereas if you're using something like a pen or a pencil tool, you got a different type of feedback from the pencil. That would be interesting.

And it's sort of like that kind of haptic technology. It reminds me of the PlayStation dual sense controller with, you know, how we can communicate like different types of surfaces, for example, if your character is walking is walking on on on ground versus like sort of swimming, for example, and the dual sense with the haptic feedback supports different types of tactile communication.

That fascinates me in an Apple pencil. We'll see. And yeah, once again, Apple, Apple, Apple unveils a new Apple pencil. Can I read back the non graded section just for yes, the record, non graded support for gestures like squeezing and the inclusion of haptic feedback. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Hold me closer, tiny pencil, you know. Why do you think it'll be small? What was just massive like four feet long. That's all the battery issue.

It's really chunky. Yeah, it's like, do you remember the student eat cosmonal? I do. Yeah, it was great. It was a great product. I do think that there's going to be some pencil stuff. I mean, not only is it in the invitation, but that's even though it works on basically every iPad now or like every iPad uses some version of the pencil. I think Apple really views the iPad pro and like the pencil of having a bit of a special relationship.

They were introduced at the same time at that event, you know, many years ago. So I do think you're on track with a new pencil. Thanks to Squarespace for supporting connected and relay FM. Alright friends it is time for the best part of this game the risk of it's also known as the rickies.

So I thought long and hard about my risk of it. Also because like we haven't gotten one of these right in a while. And before I read you mine I sort of want to preface that by saying that I picked this one because the more I think about this I put pros and the big deal that Apple seems to be making about them. The more I struggle to believe that they're just going to come out and say we have this new iPads they have a new display and there's a new Apple pencil and a new keyboard and that's it.

So basically the event you know the announcement is mostly about the accessories. There's got to be something and maybe this is just me wish casting but I feel like there has to be something that after six years of the 2018 iPad pros announcement. I feel like this is an opportunity for Apple to reset the iPad pro narrative to tell a new story with the iPad pro especially because I feel like this product needs to be a little bit more.

This product needs to be differentiated more from the iPad air particularly if the iPad air is also getting a 13 inch version now. So my pick my risky pick is the new iPad pros can run a version of macOS when needed. Didn't you say you wanted somebody to win a risky pick this time. It's about time somebody got one right let me pick the most risky you've been Mac pad piled is what what yeah what happens.

So this has been a discussion that's been going on for quite some time right obviously I built the Mac pad Jason has been writing and podcasting about this for a long time including I believe a few episodes ago on on upgrade. The idea that so you have these iPads you have the iPad air and you have the iPad pro and the iPad air is going to get a bigger version supposedly compatible with the magic keyboard or a future keyboard accessory.

Most people would be fine with an iPad air so what is the reason for the iPad pro to exist. There are some features of the iPad pro right like the better display the the four speaker audio face ID. There are features that justify the existence of a pro model but as time goes on I feel like those features those exclusives don't do enough to justify why this product is called an iPad pro.

What's pro about it that the iPad air cannot do and I think Apple is such a unique opportunity here to make the kind of product that no other company can make today right now there's no other company that can build that that kind of product and I think running macOS.

And non-graded here it can be a native instance of macOS available like sort of like as an app almost it can be virtualized Apple as the hypervisor framework which is their virtualization framework has been sitting dormant in iPad OS for the past couple of years it's there they have done nothing with it.

Or maybe it can be an iPad OS version of Mac virtual display in that case you will need to have a Mac nearby so personally I would rather see either native macOS or virtual macOS but there's an important thing that I want to say here I am not saying that Apple needs to pivot the iPad line by saying sorry we were kidding with iPad OS now these iPads are going to run macOS I am not saying that.

Nor do I think that's a good idea I'm saying that a good way to differentiate an iPad pro from an iPad air would be this computer it's a pro it's a pro machine that cost multiple thousands of dollars or euros when you need it if you need to do complex work on it because we make the chips and because we make the ecosystem you can

upon demand use macOS especially and this is this is why I think this new keyboard accessory will be an interesting story especially if they have a new better keyboard coming out when I saw that rumor from last year from Mark Gurman that Apple was going to make a more laptop like keyboard

that's where I started thinking about this concept of like but what if would it be so horrible would it be so bad if you took an iPad pro and when you dark it into this keyboard that's got the same trackpad the same keys the same function keys of a Mac at that point what stopping you you as in Apple from saying

but what if the user needs it and we just let him use it macOS if they have a compatible input accessory and at the core it's still an iPad so when you detach it it's still an iPad tablet running iPad OS with touch and and everything so yeah I am arguing for a native version of my macpad essentially

to as an opportunity to start telling a new story for the iPad pro as a hybrid machine that only Apple can make that makes sense within their ecosystem and that would justify the existence of a much much more powerful computer at the very top of the line of the iPad family

so once again my risky pick is the new iPad pros can run a version of macOS when needed so I'm following along with you here in the reasoning of like the iPad pro needs a more compelling what can it do compared to the other iPads other than just does a nice screen and you can use more expensive accessories

right like this is not it is not a mega compelling story for it you know on mass however we're probably going to talk about this before this episode is done I think that a potential spanner and the works of this is the mac government report over the weekend that there is a possibility that this iPad might be touted with technology that makes it an AI device and that could be the thing whatever on earth that means maybe we'll get into this to whatever

not that could mean that could be the thing right where to like oh and in the iPad pro you can do this which is powered by AI and only possible because of the whatever chip like that so there could be a scenario where they follow exactly what you're saying like of show me why this thing is better and is more expensive but it could be doing something different that's that would be my potential challenge I want your version more though

yeah and the way I see it it wouldn't be a failure on Apple's part to say now you can also use macOS if anything it would be sort of like a badge of honor because again they are the only company that can do this I've used a surface for six months last year and it's it's a decent laptop and it's a horrible tablet and here Apple has these devices that are fantastic tablets and can be used just fine as laptops and I say that I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do this

laptops and I say that because I do because I built my own version so we'll see probably not going to get it but hey that's how you play this game I guess well it's a way to play the game but that's what it's not been a risky pick scored in four years

well I'm going to change that you are you are yeah okay four words we get new max at the iPad event yeah sure okay okay he said he's going to change is going to change is going to get this point he said two points sir what max are we getting something with the M4

okay maybe a mac and the iPad at the iPad event is this because like you just like you can't accept the possibility that a non-Mac would get this chip before an iPad is that what's going on I mean it's part of it it's weird I knew it there you go he's like the iPads got it it's also that we're recording this a day early it's also that I basically not been in my office for like a week and half between St. Jude and then going out of town last this

that yesterday so look I just I'm just saying he's got a belief you know it could be it could be a Mac I just I don't want to live in a world where an iPad has the M4 and the Mac Pro has an M2 base chip I just can't but that's the world living in but I don't want to even right now if they put an M4 in a Mac it's not the Mac Pro no I know I know so the iPad Pro would have an M4 but the Mac Pro still would be on an M2 I understand that but it's that if one Mac has it it helps that's all we

do Max we get new Max also look WBC is just whatever it is like seven days away very soon in June and sometimes Apple likes to you know clear the decks and I think WBC is going to have a lot of software talk and it is mostly a software show this year with AI and Siri and intelligence and all that nonsense and so if you got some max waiting why not just let him out let him out to play with the new iPads which Max let's tell us who was you could say

Max just tell us what you think are you non-graded yeah non-graded I just want to know you seem so confident I think we can see an M4 Mac mini that's still in the M2 and I think we could potentially see I see I'm ag just got up it I'm going to say the M4 Mac mini because it's still hanging out the M2 that is not much of a that will make you feel better and M4 Mac mini any Mac with the

M4 maybe feel better so you're just saying the Mac mini so do we it's not great is the pick we got new Max or we got new Mac well there's more than one you get you know multiple multiple excuse we get new Max taking my non-graded out we get new Max okay you

long-graded is not graded so it doesn't matter yeah but it but it made him look bad so this pick is bad all three of our risky bad Mike mine is I got whoa whoa I haven't even said mine yet so my pick the iPad Pro gets MagSafe but it's not what you think and what is it not the iPhone Max safe that's what is it is that hang on is not the max safe the iPhone has which is not really a phrase that makes sense is that part of the sum what that means is the way you learn some of that

means not the max safe and I can ask the iPad Pro get the iPad Pro gets max safe charging yeah this is how you want to word this but it's not what you think yeah not the max safe and I can ask but that's graded yes full pick is the iPad Pro gets max safe charging but it's not what you think not the max safe and iPhone has so let me understand here if the iPad Pro gets a larger puck in the back of the device is that like the iPhone that's not the max safe the iPhone has

I know you've been clever here no it's not the max safe the iPhone has we've read the paper the iPad Pro gets max safe charging not the max safe and iPhone has so are you saying that if they do max safe and it's a wireless charger but just by virtue of being bigger than the iPhone max safe circle you get the risky pick I mean if it will help you it an iPhone max safe charge will not charge the iPad Pro is what I'm saying like I have questions yeah you've left a door open here

I feel like it's not risky we just talk about it which is Mac max safe oh yeah for sure so that's what I think it's going to be okay but then you got to see it no no I don't have to say I think you have to say what max you just says we get new max but y'all didn't say my pick isn't risky I'm sort of now on the fence about yours being risky a little bit well you both wait it was agreed that's the rule right the rule was it was agreed I presented the pick to you

said yep that's good I can change it back to the original wording which is the iPad Pro gets max safe charging not the max safe and iPhone has no I think it's funny that it says that's not what you think okay but it's yeah that's why I did it that's sort of saying it's this is not the max safe I'm charging that the iPhone has that's not so you're saying that if they do that it's but it's not going to be compatible with existing max safe accessories yeah see that but that's a

different pick because that rules out Mac max safe oh no I'm not talking about that but Mac max safe is what I think it's going to be so I'm not ruling out I'm ruling out iPhone max safe all you're saying is not iPhone max safe yeah okay but that

would also mean like it won't work with two charges right yeah it will not charge the way that the iPhone charges okay but it will be called max safe is what I'm saying okay okay like again they will lose I'm in my pick is it's called max safe to right which is like

max safe as well not max safe max safe three no because it's like they they don't call Apple watch charging max safe actually also do no they don't check this really just magnetic while is charging okay I'm fine with it I'm fine with it yeah yeah thank you there was the

expectation that you were just gonna be able to take an existing Magsave puck for the iPhone and just slap it to the back of the iPad and that it was gonna work yeah but yeah so I'm good with it like I actually like the non-graded part of this as I think it will be either Mac Magsave or it will be very much like it right like I don't think it makes a lot of sense to try and hold up this iPad with a magnet yeah like I think that that is not going to work so there's no point trying to make it look

like it will like I think that's going to be too complicated I I am not confident that I mean I don't know this but I'm not confident that the magnetic strength of Magsave could hold a 12.9 inch iPad and if they make it like that people will try to make accessories that I like that and I I don't think that's a good idea and I think Apple probably knows this yeah and so they will probably I'm very confident they will want to add a magnetic charging method because they have magnetic charging for

everything else at this point that is portable the iPad doesn't have it so I could imagine that they either you know what they could also do I just thought of this I have no idea if this is impossible that little magnet where you charge the pencil what if you could also put a charge

of the charge then you can't charge your iPad and pencil at the same time you're using the pencil because you're an artist that being unknown but yeah I think magnetic charging is coming to the iPad I think they'll call it Magsave but it's not going to be the iPhone

one okay there's your pick okay this episode of connected is brought to you by express VPN in the world when you need a little privacy you close a door but online we leave doors open everywhere we go using the internet without express VPN is like never

your online activity can't be seen by anyone I've been using express VPN for a long time in addition to the piece of mind it gives me also really fast look a lot of VPNs slow down your net traffic express VPN is worked really hard to make sure that's not the case and it works

everywhere phones laptops you can even have it at the router level now so everyone who shares your Wi-Fi can be protected it's really awesome and it's super easy to use it's as easy closing the door just fire up the app click one button and you're all set it's easy to see why express VPN was rated number one by both the verge and tech radar secure your online activity today by visiting express VPN dot com slash connected

that's exp r e s s VPN express VPN dot com slash connected the link is also in the show notes are thanks to express VPN for the support of the show and relay FM and as jukes flexing turn I present you with seven flexes and you're ready boys I'm ready I'm ready the new app up pencil has a button okay because I want a button yeah I don't think okay I don't actually think there will be one but I would prefer if they put one on that's that's just just sometimes your flexi is the thing you want

Federico you know you said earlier about that name magic pencil magic magic pencil this made me laugh because I think there's going to be four Apple pencils oh what was that sharp remember that sharp they did on Apple newsroom down into update the chart because there's going to be another one I don't believe so I think that they're going to add a lot of complexity to this new Apple pencil one way or another if they're putting a button on

the gestures on it or whatever right I don't think that that can replace the one that we currently have plus I could also imagine it connects differently to the iPad if they do something weird with the camera right so it can't replace any other pencil and the other

pencils have purpose I think they're needed in their preferential for the products that they were already used for so I can imagine them selling four Apple pencils next I also think this pick number three the new Apple pencil will come in color choices

okay which goes with number four which is that the magic keyboard matches the aluminium colors of the iPad yes I agree with this this was a Jason snail pick at some point that I'm now using and I thought I'd everything can get a little bit of color even though

won't be much color I'm going to hedge here and say the iPad Pro does not get an M4 chip spicy okay what about the new that's what they're going to get they're not going to get anything they won't be any but I'm going to follow this up with iOS 17 AI enhancements for iPad only yes iPadOS okay not iOS oh my God look you you you rip you ripped it in half all right you've done more tragic travesties than me iPad OS 17 I may have the capitulated a computer but at least I follow the style

guy at least you call it by its name you know yes iPadOS 17 AI enhancements for iPad only so if they do put an M4 chip in it they may release something before iOS 18 that is just for the iPad which satisfy satisfies this idea that there's going to be some kind of special thing with for AI going on with this computer okay okay I love it and finally this was going to be my risky but I decided not to do it for everybody apples iPad pro keyboard features a new key

switch technology no no no I think they're going to do it so we have butterfly right like that was a yes that was a key switch technology I think the Apple is going to proudly have invented yet another vote another way no way for a key to be question question for you give us a name from butterfly to wing technology maybe it's just a backwards is like his catapilla switches catapilla switch technology I don't have a good name yet you could go even backwards bacteria switches you know the

amoeba switch super key switch XDR super super switch okay all right liquid switch yeah no I I can imagine them trying to get cute again and this might be a way to do that all right seven flexes from the Duke of flexington of course thanks Duke I also have seven flexes had six but I thought

of one is Michael's talking I've been watching the two of these guys been furiously putting things in the document as I've been talking yes I now have 20 flexes you ready for the next thing I wonder what the record is of how many I think we did I had exactly I picked 10 at some point I remember my donation to charity being very high Hey Federico you've got like another five minutes to come up with another three if you want to beat your

record you know I could I could try I could try okay me new iPad airs come in new colors that are as vibrant as the back of the iMacs I've done with wimpy pastel colors I want bold colors in the iPad air okay okay or can I ask you a question of course don't the current iPad as have that kind of color they're not as vibrant there I think they might be your thinking of iPad I think you're thinking God I these names I think

you're thinking of the 10th and iPad the 10th gen iPad is more vibrant yeah that's the one yeah thank you for example thank you for the correction you're right yeah yep yep the air needs doesn't fun we're looking

for that basically right like the iPad as colors to look like the iPads colors which are the best iPod colors they are the new apple pencil is named the apple pencil pro actually I'm going to take out the is named apple pencil pro thank you okay thank you for getting the style guide correctly apple

announces AI power changes to i work but I still call it I don't think it called it I work anymore I have no work apps like we know no no this isn't I'm just saying I don't think they call it I don't think they refer to them that way anymore no no which is a shame but probably for the best

i life and I work for like great brand names for a long time yeah I almost pitched this is a risky maybe I should have final cut for iPad gains a feature specifically for video in vision OS oh oh what oh huh you know there were people making content for this thing see this is a good one okay yeah so

the other ones are bad but this is very good this would be like crew a massive like making a video yeah okay something new that they call out for vision OS video very cool this is like the inside out of Federico's risky iPad pass through is announced for vision OS nice nice bring you a

iPad in there oh oh oh you could look at your iPad and bring the screen of your iPad like the maybe I should call this iPad virtual display yeah yeah yeah post through I was like what you do it yes see to iPads iPad virtual vision pro on your iPad doesn't exist anymore yeah if your iPad dies in

vision OS it dies in real life so come on that was that was funnier than you gave me credit for it was funny it was fun I'm sorry that was it was very good but so because I was thinking I was trying to get my head around this that if you and Federico are correct you could use a virtualized Mac

in vision OS via an iPad yeah man yes okay let's go let's go maybe let's go it's just it's just Apple ID login errors all the way down did they happen to you too by the way did you do for no get your no no no I'm still cleaning it up man I had to reset a home pod today like my life forever like

I don't have everything's broken it is bonkers to me that Apple has not addressed it yep what are you doing somebody wrote to me just by the way we're talking about the fact that over the weekend like Friday night a bunch of people got their Apple IDs locked and had to reset their iCloud passwords I

was one of these people and we know of a bunch of people have reached out to Apple to ask for comment on this and they're not saying why it happened which is really weird somebody wrote to me to say that like there is like a requirement in the under some kind of law somewhere even in the UK or Europe that they would have to disclose if this was some kind of breach or some kind but but Apple doesn't care about fines number six a new Apple pencil is announced that only works with the new iPad

pros okay okay yep so that would be the previously mentioned yeah Apple pencil pro the ABB new iPad pros start with the least 256 gigabytes of storage so it's just at notice some non-graded context here currently the iPad pro starts at 128 gigs which is not enough for a pro product I think

this is also to your point Mike earlier about the screens they throw some more storage in there they can charge even more for it so maybe maybe the 256 becomes the base price so new iPad pros start with the least 256 gigabytes of storage okay all right well because look something you

should know about me I'm the kind of person who gives into temptations and Mike tempted me and I couldn't resist myself I now present to you listeners of connected 11 flexes I am ready to live how many do you want can't go to 12 make it like a we'll see as we go and maybe we'll just

close out of here so number one the new iPad pros have slimmer bezels than before okay I think they're gonna do it they're gonna you know slim and down just a little bit more the thing that I am most interested about is still like that it will be thinner right like I have no idea what that

is going to feel like like that's got a nice lot a few days ago I I took my I've had many out like a out of its smart cover and I was like oh my god this thing is so thin right like yeah when you when these things don't have cases on the super thin yeah I can't even imagine what this like

less than five millimeter iPad Pro would feel like yeah that's going nice it's gonna be really nice it's gonna be weird number two Apple refreshes it's input accessories for usbc I mean what are they doing with the magic key word on the magic trackpad like nothing still right doesn't know now is

the time number three hang on the new iPad hang on hang on hello yeah this would fit really nicely with new max yes even they had an event for new max and they didn't do it then shhh they've had a couple of events when they could have done it and yes yeah well I guess we'll

you will be see next week can you imagine if both see when I we get our risky and Mike does not like that would be you know poetic justice is that is that is that is that is that is that is that is no you think is not I feel very confident Federico that you will not get yours even though I want it

okay um a number three the new iPad keyboard can also be paired with a Mac or Vision Pro I feel like this laptop like keyboard uh just making it exclusive to the iPad Pro that feels like that feels like a waste you know um especially because the the the Apple doesn't really have a

Vision Pro peripheral story at the moment and a new keyboard that's locked to the iPad Pro that will feel strange I really think it's time for Apple to make um the sort of product that yeah you can attach an iPad to it but also you can use it wirelessly with other products if anything

I would play here's where I play the environmental card here um why force people to buy even more products and just it feels like a waste of of of money and material to force people to just buy a keyboard and and you have a chance now in 2024 to correct the mistake of 2020 with the magic

keyboard that's iPad only just also make it you know fall back to Bluetooth or something well there could be an entire argument made about the iPad Pro in general about like stop making new things that people are gonna buy because you're not doing much of it the the one thing I will say

about your pick here I'm not saying that it won't happen to which is the thing to consider that would mean you would need to have a battery in the skew world right oh yeah oh yeah there's a battery in the current one isn't oh there no there's not no no no no no but yeah

I think I think it will have a battery yes okay Federico yes I'm afraid that your keyboard dreams are just a bridge too far I don't get it bridge keyboard uh what a great response to the joke day you know oh number four the video number four the video is shorter than 31 minutes no way

there's no way this is less than 30 minutes we'll see we'll see well I mean if it's just iPads which it is then maybe it could be how long was the October event with 30 minutes there you go yeah yeah and and I said 31 because like what if it's 30 minutes and 15 seconds or something so I

just wanted to be sure number five we're not even halfway through the new iPad Pro has the M4 okay so yeah doing the opposite actually think this is gonna happen and you're just picking it I think it's gonna happen there's evidence uh in the iPARAS code that suggests the model numbers

and sort of the some of the some of the strings that nine to five macas found that they're pointing to these ipad pros skipping a generation so going from M2 to M4 um I think it's gonna happen I think it will have the M4 um number six the new apple pencil is compatible with and has special features

for visual s uh I believe there was a rumor for this a while back the idea of like uh apple is working on apple pencil that you can use as a pointer of sorts while wearing the vision pro I think once again because there's apple needs a better of uh apple needs a lot of things

for vision s but one of those things is a better peripheral story and uh having an apple pencil then maybe let's you draw in a r and let's you point at things and it's compatible with vision s I think that would make for a really compelling accessory number seven

game so originally my flexes were and in at six and then mike as the devil on my shoulder uh tempted me and so this is the result of mike's devilish axe um devil uh number seven gaming on the ipad pro is mentioned with at least a triple a game shown um that's good that's uh I just

saw that there's the assassin's creed mirage game launching officially now in june maybe this is a way to show assassin's creed mirage running on the new ipad pro oh I forgot that was gonna be on the ipad yeah hilarious um I one of my picks my potential risky picks uh was gonna be we see delta

which seems impossible but also like it's been the number one app you know can you imagine can you imagine can you imagine they just show an empty empty app oh look at this emulator they share with Pokemon on bound there's no wrong here what are you talking about not an official Nintendo game um

number eight the new ipad external keyboard has at least one programmable action key oh whoa hello hello yeah so I'm thinking action button right before the ipad um oh I think I'm gonna put an action button on the ipad I just absolutely could they do that they should do that they could do

that we haven't thought about it number 12 let's see put it in their fedrico no but come on do it no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no it didn't leak in the CAD designs for the product so I don't think it will have one but they should I'm adding an eight

flexi okay my case doing it get my case doing it action button my case an eight flexi the ipad probably gets an action button okay we're back to my number nine number nine people number nine the new ipad pro with m4 has thunderbolt five come on let's go uh apple is obviously working on

thunderbolt five and the time is right for you know new new new cheap m4 new generation first device to get thunderbolt five uh I love it uh number 10 vision pro launch dates in more countries are announced oh good good cool that's really good yeah and finally because I don't think I

have a I have a number 12 in me at this point I cannot think of anything else number 11 the new ipad pros have wi-fi seven does anything else nope would be the first device the iphone so what did they have six e six e and was a rumor that the the iphone 16 pro was gonna be the first one

with wi-fi seven but I'm gonna say the new ipad pro will be the first one with wi-fi seven we could imagine the m4 has yeah you know and that's what I think is supportive and for seven that's what I'm thinking m4 like beside j i what else is in the m4 I'm gonna say wi-fi seven and thunderbolt five

um while we're on that real quick Stephen I don't think I assure I don't remember if you answer do you think that the m4 will be in the ipad pro I honestly I'm like a coin flip I'd I see it I see cases on both sides I honestly don't know yeah I listened to upgrade this morning driving

home I thought about it and I I just don't know I don't know yeah that that during the conversation me and Jason had I came around to the possibility where I was previously like absolutely not I'm still not sure like I'm I'm really it seems odd but also what else

are they gonna do I don't know that's it we flexed we flexed I'm ready to spend a lot of money for tarry gee so there's that um yeah well that's um how much is it per per flexi 50 dollars or okay is it 50 or 25 I think it's 25 okay because like you have like 250 dollars on the line here

or something right something like that yeah nice 25 dollars per wrong flexi made it nice nice nice all right to see it well so that's uh that's the game that that's it that's the game we'll be back next week to judge our picks we're not quite sure exactly what day and time yet so keep an

eye on discord we'll let everybody know in the meantime you can find us all online I'm sure there will be lots of stuff over on max stories so be sure to follow Federico on Macedon and threads he could be found at Vitechi both of those services of Vitechi at max stories dot net on Macedon

Mike is the coach of a bunch of other shows here on a relay fam including upgrade y'all will be judging your draft would you make like a month ago right we made it at the end of March we did we drafted at the end of March so good so yeah we'll see well that's like I genuinely wonder will

there be more correct risky picks or draft picks scored that'll be fun okay so for me all right oh so like I missed the show one week and I'm falling apart hold on hold on hold on I have flexi number 12 I'm doing it I am doing it I am doing it

I'm screw it I'm typing it live flexi I pet keyboard has a dedicated Siri key oh like the co-pilot key yep how many keys is this keyboard gonna many many keys I guess the function row because there are buttons that are on the Mac function row that you maybe wouldn't need. That is exactly my thought process. Okay, so that's incredible. I'm sorry Steven,

sorry. I'm glad you interrupted. So Mike is I mic on the internet, threads, Macedon, etc. You can find my writing at 512 pixels on net and I co-host Mac Power users every Sunday, here on Relay FM. We just said an episode with the guy behind my stream. I thought it was really good. Go check that out. It's a great Mac app. You can follow me on threads as ISM H86 and on Macedon as ISM H at eworld.social. I do have a project to merge those user names. I'm looking at some things.

So if you have recommendations for a new user named Steven, go to connectiffeedback.com and let us know. Yes, perfect. That'd be great. I don't know if you want that, but it's great. See all people come up with something. I need something there. It's time for a rebrand, Steven. We're going to rebrand you. Okay. Do you have ideas? I actually did have an idea, but it's not really good. But I wondered if you had to have a number that it should be 512.
