There are many ways to express dislike. Hate. Hostility. Loathing. But disdain best captures how the soldiers of Company D of the Third Maine Infantry Regiment felt about Lieutenant Woodbury Hall. That’s why we’re calling the second episode of Company D, “Nobody Likes You, Woodbury. Company D’s Most Hated Officer.” (THEME) Hey, being a pariah isn’t easy. The enlisted men of Company D even wrote a letter to the Governor of Maine complaining about Woodbury. They called him “incompetent.” They said he was “obnoxious.” But the real twist? The man leading the charge against him was his own uncle, William Higgins. Family drama worthy of “Succession” or “Arrested Development.” And yet, despite being despised, Woodbury marched on. He never missed a day with the Third Maine. He was never sick. Never wounded. He stood out among the officers who led the Third Maine into the bloodiest and arguably the most significant battle of the U.S. Civil War—Gettysburg. Join us for Episode 2 of Company D, launching on Wednesday, October 1, on your favorite podcast app. Find out more at: companydpodcast.com.
