Welcome to the Command Center Podcast. I'm Julie Donaldson. The Commanders dropped their first division matchup at the season and Sunday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Santana Moss and Logan Paulson joined me to break down Washington's Week three matchup. There is still plenty of football to be played here, but it was the second straight week that Washington was totally shut out of that first half, the offense could

not get anything going. I mean, just fifty total yards in the first half and nothing to show for it. What do they need to do, Logan to sustain drives? I think that's a million dollar question. I think it comes down to early down execution. When you look at how they performed on first second down, especially in this ballgame, they just did not do a good enough job. And then when you get into those third log situations, that's

when that pressure comes. That's when that defensive line can eat and no one wants to be pass protecting a third and tenth situation, right, So can we get better execution on first second down? Obviously there was a bright spot in the offense with ag running the football, but they need more in terms of quick game screens. Can they get to those touches for some of those space players. That's what needs to happen to get this off and sticking.

I think to some everything that logan just said, every man's got to do their job, you know, at the end of the day, beat the guy in front of you and less execute. And I think when you watch that game, he saw a lot of that going on early and you can point out different spots where key guys didn't do enough of their job for us to be successful. And I think that's a great point, Like they it wasn't like one guy made a disastrous mistake.

It's like everyone took a turn making a mistake, running the wrong route, not getting the past protection right, holding the ball too long, maybe a bad play call here and there, So that all needs to go by the wayside. They need to get on the same page and then you start executing better. When I hear that, it's a little confusing because you would think at this point guys know how to do their job and where they're supposed

to be. But you have nine sacks as well in this game, and if you want to point the finger to where that falls, I think we're saying it's not just one guy, it's a lot of different guys not necessarily doing their job right. So what happens on those nice sacks, Well, I think it just depends. Like you look at the first sackets, I think you know, Leno has been uber consistent, you know, and the one bloomshone is is the sack Josh Sweat just beats him. Right.

Then you go down to the ticker and you say, the next play, Carson Wentz holds the football too long, or maybe the play call isn't quite right, or maybe in this third and ten situation, Scott Turner's not helping out with chip chip protection, or maybe the concepts too deep. So I think that's what people need to understand. Pass protection in the l NFL is a complicated, nuanced thing. That's not just one person, not just five guys. It's

a team. Statistic receivers running the right routes, receivers not getting up through the time of the play, all those things contribute. Yeah, And then then playing the Eagles, you would you would have hope Carson would had a better out, and just knowing that this his former team, all the hooplaud that was going on around his game lead up until the game. But for some of our reason, those guys was more ready than he was. No, they came ready.

They had billboards up saying we're coming for the person. But it's not easy to have to address, you know, I had to interview him after the game. It's not easy for that becauseas look, I've just got to do better, And of course every player probably would say that as well. Even defensively, there were some bright spots, but they just still once again gave up one too many big play Santana, Yeah they did. But man, look I said again, you know, I tipped my head off to Can Fuller and Saint Juice.

I think those guys play a great game collectively. You know, the defense went out dan and flew around and made a lot of plays that you might not see when it comes to score and call them. You know, I understand we want to see our defense played better. I undersee one. I understand we want to see teams not score as much. But when you don't have the other side plan up to their level of play, then it puts too much on the defense. And we've already been

harping on them already earlier this year. To me, I think that was their best their best game this year, and it don't show that way because we lost twenty four eight. Yeah. I mean if you would have told me that they would only score twenty four points to the Philadelphiagles and we would lose the game, I'd be like something happened with the offense, and that's exactly what happened.

Benjamin Saint Jews proved to be a bright spot for the Commander's defense, recording three solo tackles in three passes defended. London Fletcher and I spoke with the cornerback post game. You yourself getting there to start on the outside when William Jackson third can't go. When we saw you a couple of times doing that double lock signature move of your owns, when did you realize in how what prep kind of went into you kind of taking over the outside for him in the game. I mean that just

goes with the verse facility that I have. I started a corner like last year, so I mean I still study the outside and in so I just in case things like that happened, so I can go on the outside and it's you know, there's no pressure. I'm I'm good. So um, it was like, uh, it was it was nothing new to me. So it was I was already ready to go go on outside if I needed to. You mentioned going on the outside, studying outside of the cornerback.

Were you able to study kind of the A. J. Brown and the routes that he'd like to run, knowing that, hey, a lot of times you might be rep match type with him or even um DeVante Smith knowing, hey, studying those guys on the outside because it's a different type of routes you get playing the slide as opposed to being outside. Oh yeah, definitely. I mean we we knew certain formation that they were gonna run like certain from certain routes. Uh, and that definitely helped. Having guys like

Kendall Fuller. That's that's very smart. Um, he's letting me know, you know, when certain routes are coming up, some formation is coming up. But yeah, like you said, I do need to kind of like switch my mind because I'm so used to like playing the so so now I gotta think about you know, sin Rose to coon out like what they run on the outside.
