Hello, and welcome back to camping Out with Zach Selby, where I'm emburdening from my tent to give you all the news you want on the Washington Commander's training camp. I'm Zach Selby, and I have two interviews for you today from our Beat reporters, one Ben Standing from the Athletic and Lake Lewis from ABC News. Let's go check it out and see what they had to say. All right, So with us, we had Ben Standing from the Athletic, and we've got a little bit of a break, you know,
from the sun. It's still a little humid. Every we got like a little bit more of an overcast. But I'll tell you the offense, after not doing all that well yesterday, it seems to be a little more crisp and polished. What have you seen from so far? Yeah, I think they maybe recognize it wasn't there day yesterday. The receivers are making a lot of nice plays. Danny Brown, Jack Quizzer just made some really nice catches. McLaurin and
Dotson had some plays earlier. Carson Wentz and Sam Howill could be in some pretty decent rhythm, so you figured they were due to have a bounce back day after yesterday and so far, so good. Yeah, I kind of how much they got twoed out a little bit by the Durham film session last night. But you bring up Carson Wentz and you know we've kind of seen the ups and the downs room then the first couple of days. But he seems like he's really on. He's airing it
out a little bit more. Yeah, I mean, he definitely was better at the start here. I mean I think you started. He's overshot a couple throws here deep, But look, the whole point of this is to figure out the new guys in the rhythm and the chemistry and how it all works. And look, his offensive line is not fully intact yet. Chase Riay is off the pup but not out there. You know, the Trey Turner not here. So you know, missing a couple of guys going up
against a good defensive line doesn't make life easier. But yeah, he's been better today, I think for sure in the offensive line. I mean, you know we have Chase really activated off the pup list, you know, he's still out there yet. Um, there's still some answers like once I'm assume once Chase comes in at center that's gonna leave
twice a competing for one of those guards spots. I mean, how do you what's your kind of assessment of that group, you know, heading into the shells and eventually pads here in a couple of days. Well, it's interesting because there's been a start on the offensive line for the last decade. Yeah, try Williams or Brandon Sheriff, and now there's not that guy. It's a solid group, but there's not like one obvious Pro Bowl talent and that you can sort of build around.
So it'll be interesting to see. You mentioned Schweitzer. He's been a really valuable chess piece for them to kind of fit in wherever they need him. We'll see if he's able to compete truly for that one of those starting guards spots. I would guess right guard Lee. It's a solid group. I think a lot of people have faith in line coach John Matsko for sure to figure it out. So I think it's considered to be a pretty solid group. I don't know what the upside is,
but I think it's a pretty good group. Yeah, I think Nasco definitely kind of living on a little bit of relief. No matter what, no matter what happens, they're going to figure it, especially after last year. But I mean I've been saying for a while they're like, no matter who they get, between Schwiser and Turner, I think they've they're in pretty good hands with either of them. Yeah,
I mean they're pretty good. I mean, look, obviously, durability will be a huge factor because Brandon Sheriff was out a bunch over the last few years. So if you can have somebody who's able to stay in their week in, week out, that goes a long way. We know, continuity is huge for an offensive line, and I think Sam Cosmi is gonna be really interesting this year. He looked pretty good last year when he played, but he missed
half the year with injuries. He's the one guy as a second round pick who maybe emerges as a higher end starter, And if he can do that starting this year, that would obviously go a long way towards seeing what this group can do last one. You know, you know, Gibson's still kind of going through this ramp up period, but in the meantime, seems like Brian Robinson is getting out there a lot more, benefiting a lot from you those those opportunities. What have you seen from him so far?
I like Brian Robinson a lot. I mean, I'm curious to see how it all fits between him and Gibson and Mkissick, like how they get all that work in. But I really think he's interesting obviously for what he does going up in the middle. We're not there's no pads yet, there's no tackling, so it's hard to completely gauge what he's doing, but he looks a very interesting
player what he's been able to do. He's caught some passes out of the backfield as well, So I am intrigued to see how he fits in because last year this team was at its best with a ball control offense, and he's going to give them, I think, a more stable version of that out of the backfield. Then I appreciate him. Man. Yeah, now with we have I got late Lewis, ABC News Morning News anchor. Lake, you've been
in here for a few days now. I mean, what's the feel you know of the we're the teams that heading into you know, what's gonna be full passed here in a couple of days. Yeah. I like what I'm saying they're getting after it on both sides of the ball. That's all you can ask. You know. Obviously, like you said, there's no pads, but you still want to see guys competing, and there have been some plays where you would think
they did have pads on. So I'm impressed. Um, I think you know, what we're seeing is a little bit more speed than we've seen in previous years, especially at the wide receiver position, but we're also seeing the secondary step up too, and they're running stride for stride with the receiver, so you're seeing depth after secondary position. So everything that they wanted to address as far as those two positions were seeing that. And then naturally Carson Wentz.
You know, he's here, big quarterback, big strong arm, made some really impressive throws and then you know, obviously he needs to be a little bit more consistent. But it's only day three, so I'm sure all that stuff will come. Yeah, working out the kinks, you know, getting everything set up, you know, on defense to be Saint Juice. He's playing a little bit of a different role and he was last year. Seems like I've seen him kind of flash every now and give it. What have you seen from
him so far? Yeah, I mean, he's a long, lanky guy, you know, and I think what they're trying to do is they're trying to move him around in different places. And you know, when you have a guy that has that kind of size that can cover slot guys, that's impressive,
you know. But I think what they're trying to do is get all their players, their best corners on the field at the same time, so you can have a William Jackson, a Kendall Fuller, and a Benji Saint Juice at the same time on the field, you know, and then obviously they can move him back as a safety at time. So I like it. Interchangeable players. That's what Ron River has been preaching for the last three years, guys that they can move over the field and give
you different packages. And look, so I'm a big Benji Saint Juice fan, you know, I kind of wish they just kept him at the one spot, but I see what they're trying to do with it. I mean, at least he's on the field. He had a really nice pass right against Camp's ends. I think of that first day, and you know, with all those defensive backs on the field, like it brings up the two linebacker sets, and a lot of people are looking at what jam And Davis
is gonna be. How much he's improved into that second season. I mean, I think he's shown some good things here and there, but I mean, yeah, yeah, I've seen improvement. You have to think half a year he was playing a position that he wasn't customed to and not in the NFL. He's not that not that type of player to be playing downhill, physical in the middle of the field. He's more of a rangy guy, you know, athletic and can cover tight ends, can can you know, take backs out?
Who are you know, popping out on the side. So I just like what he's doing right now. And I just think, you know, obviously he's still developing, but you can see that the guy as a player, I mean, I naturally, you take somebody in the first round, you kind of want to see like a Michael Parsons type of setup. Michael Parsons is a freak. You know, that's a whole nother ballpark. But I think this kid is gonna be a really good player for this team for many years to come. And I think you're going to
start to see him flash this year. We'll tell you, I hope he's covering people as much as these bugs are coming here as because my goodness, there all over the place. But you know, we'll switch over the offense here. And we've seen with sort of aired at a little bit more recently Dan. You know, day two he was doing a little bit. Then near the end of practice, day three he was doing it a lot, especially to you know deal right, he had a really sick path
over Kenda Fuller. I mean, that's what you expect to this office, right, you know, nomember what comes out of wins with his maybe you know, inconsistency's here and there, but he's gonna air it out well, and that's what you want. I mean, in no offense to Taylor. But last year, you know you had a quarterback that that's not his strength throwing the ball down the field. Yeah, just wasn't what he could do. It doesn't have that kind of arm, and he was more of a mobile,
you know, make things happen type of quarterback. Well guess what, Carson Wentz is that kind of guy too, But he can throw the ball down the field. I'm looking forward to see how this thing really gels, you know, over time, because you know. Now you look at Kurtis Samuel, he had a great day yesterday, you know, and he made some nice catches and showed you know, he's cutting on a dime, you know, stopping on a dime. That's a
good sign for that hamstring. So if you have him, you have dots, and you have Terry McLaurin naturally, and then you have like a Cam Sims. I mean you you've got some pieces on the outside now that should be able to help your quarterback, your new quarterback. Not to mention, you know, the young tight end is that we're saying we're not even seeing their best tight end, Logan Thomas, who's still coming back, you know. So you put all these things together. Antonio Gibson's not out on
the field right now. You haven't really seen a whole lot from Jad mckissic. So they haven't even started clicking with everyone. So naturally, for me, I've said this and I'll say it again, it all starts with the offensive line. The offensive line has shown some glimpses early. I haven't. I wouldn't write or say anything about the offensive line like they're not well. It's hard, it's hard to judge them when they're not in full pads. Yeah, there's so
many limitations that they have. They've been holding their own though, actually, and that's a good sign, you know. That's what you want to see. You want to see the sam cosmis, all these young players, you know, be able to come in and do some things. And you know, so right now we're not even looking at the offensive line. We're just looking at all the skill set players. But next week in the heat, it's gonna be about what's going on in the Absolutely, it's gonna be weird about That's
what we're gonna see. And I'm looking forward to it. I am. There's a little bit of chippiness out there, not anything bad, but but just anxious. They're anti additive and that's what you want. And I think you know, these players feel the same heat the coaches field. They want to win, you know, and they want to get the job done now. So it all starts in training camp, even if you don't have pads on, but just to see them out there and everyone's back, we're all back here.
I mean, it's that time of year, you know. Last one you bring up Curtis Samuel and if that move he put on Benji the Saint Jews happened. Maybe in June, they probably would have said we're gonna save him for an abundance of caution, But it seems like, you know, he was out there, you know, the very next day. That just shows you how I think confident they are and what he in his health and what he can do.
He's healthy, I mean, and I think you know again last year or trying to rush to get him back on the field, and he was trying to rush to He just needed more time with that type of injury. And when you're a quick twitch, fast guy, you need your hamstrings, you know. So now that he's back out there, I mean, you can put him in the slot, you can put him out the why, you can put him you know, you can put him anywhere out there. And now you can move Terry inside at times, you can
move Jahan inside. I just like what they're doing. And then remember yesterday there was a package where they had all three of them on the one side of the field at the same time. That's gonna be difficult, that's gonna be a problem for some defenses because you don't know what they're gonna do. Because you still may have a running back flare out to the other side. You still have a tight end in the middle of the field.
It's just going to create problems, and these are the problems they haven't been able to hand opposing defenses for the last two three years. We'll see how it goes and then all right, Lake, I appreciate you. Yeah, that's all we have for you today, but be sure to check out your daily Command Center camp coverage every weekday on the Commander's YouTube channel. I'm gonna go back to my tent because I basically live here like everybody else, and I will see you tomorrow.
