It's time for coffee and company, fueled by Thornton's on Sports Talk seven nine day. Now here's Nick Coffee. I just watched for the fourth time. I believe the video that the Louisville men's basketball Twitter account put out yesterday of what it looks to be. I'm sure it was a workout practice type situation, but it kind of looked, you know, the highlights they put together were looked. It came from an open run, right, and it's all

the newcomers, and I'm excited. I'm trying not to get you know, worked up and overly excited about, you know, highlights from an open gym type setting. But man, I think Pat Kelsey has a lot of really pieces and I can go both sides with it, meaning like I don't know, like if your worst player is gosh, I wouldn't even I don't want to say name because I don't want to make it out like I'm thinking these guys are terrible. But the vast majority of the guys they brought in in

the portal are are you know, good players. Some could be really good at this level, but man, just the highlights and again it's just highlights. I'm sure if you watched from start to finish, you'd see some plays that might concern you, and guys making mistakes. They're not perfect, but they're gonna have shooting. They've got a lot of experience, they're balanced, and they're versatile. Doesn't mean it's gonna be great. Doesn't mean anything as

far as how many games they're gonna win. But I really feel as if this this roster was was put together not just to you know, make sure we have enough guys because you're starting from scratch, but there was clearly a method when it comes to the personnel, and that matters. That means something right, and every coach should be doing that, not just you know, hey, let's just go get two guys because we need to. Let's find the right fit. And most of these guys come from a winning culture.

You know, most of these guys have played for teams where balance was a big factor. To wear like, there's not a guy on this team that I think comes in as like the guy that is leaving a situation where he was getting twenty two shots a game. I mean, to be honest with you, the guy who's coming off the best season individually for Louisville not at Louisville, of course, because none of these guys played at Louisville last year. It's Terrence Salwards Junior, who was the Sun Belt Player of the Year

and he had a huge role, no doubt about it. But you know, he played thirty minutes average seventeen points and four and a half boards, three and a half assists. But prior to that, he averaged fourteen points a game and five rebounds a game off the bench. So like, this is a guy who was the sixth man of the Year in the Sun Belt prior to be prior or yeah, prior to being the player of the year in that league. So I'm bullish on this team, man. I really

think they could be They could be pretty good. You know when I say, I could go both sides with it. You know, if I wanted to play Devil's advocate, you know, do you have a guy like do you have a pro on this team? And I don't know, But you don't need that to be good. Like, you know, you might need a pro here and there if you're gonna beat the elite teams that you're gonna

win a national championship. But as we've discussed, the college basket Like, let's go back to what we talked about yesterday, and I'm not sure if we did this in the five o'clock hours, So I apologize if this is something that you that you heard yesterday, and we're not gonna spend as much time on it. But the crew at the Field of sixty eight, they

cover college basketball as well as anybody. They did. With the Olympics about to come up, they made a team USA that is just college basketball players and I thought that was interesting. But how many of a lot of these guys are still in college available to be selected for this list? Because they're not NBA guys, they might get drafted, they might, you know, spend it a year in the g lea a year on a two way contract.

But some of these guys on this team could do that potentially, I mean that could potentially happen for you know, Chucky Hepburn or I'm I mean, I really think, to be honest with you, as much as you know, he kind of was was an out of nowhere guy that was available. I think Noah Waterman has an NBA skill set with as a six ten six' eleven big that can stretch the floor and shoot it, so you know, like, you don't need to have guys that are surefire NBA players

to be a really good team that could accomplish something in college basketball. So again, Mark Mark Sears, John L. Davis, Cooper Flagg, Ryan Kawchbrenner, and Alex Caravan. Those that's the starting five according to the field of sixty eight as far as the you know most because again, if you're putting a team together that go compete for the team team us say, you're doing it based off what talent and like, you know, players that are

right now really good. Cooper Flag is the only guy that for sure I think we know is gonna get drafted. The others are Hunter Dickinson, R. J. Davis, Hunter Salas good Aari Richmond, Coleman Hawkins. Again, not to say those guys would never play in the NBA if they came out this past season, but clearly there's a reason they decided to come back and not go to college and not go to the NBA. So yeah, I know football will be here before basketball, and I'm super excited to see

what Jeff brom can do in year number two. I still think that team, despite the schedule being tougher, and it's going to be tougher, Like they could be better, maybe substantially better than last year and not have the same record just because of how the schedule shapes up. And again that's not me telling you that their schedule is just you know, one of the toughest

in the country. It's just a lot tougher than last year, which again speaks to the fact of last year's schedule just you know, being very uh favorable, manageable as we like to say, instead of just saying, you know, the schedule was weak, which it was to an extent. I mean, it wasn't the worst schedule, and they even the teams they played that everybody said sucked. Some of those teams still end up having winning records, but you know it didn't have you know, Clemson in Florida state on

it all right. It's coffee and company the five o'clock hour here on a Friday afternoon. Appreciate you guys hanging out with us, as you know, we are fueled by Thornton's. If you didn't know, now you do, make sure you sign up to become a member of the refer Freshman Awards program at Thornton's because you'll save money at the gas pump, you can take part in the frequency club, and your overall day will be better if it includes a trip to Thornton's. I can. I can tell you that it does

for me, and if it doesn't for you. Got to be honest, it's probably a you thing, and you might want to get that. You might want to get that looked at. You might want to talk to somebody about that, see how you can fix that. All right, So about a couple of people ask this on the text line, and you know I was going to get to it at some point, and now thanks the time to get to it. But John shared some news earlier today on his social

media. We've had some people on the text line asking does this mean that John is leaving Coffee and Company? And unless I'm wrong, it does not, right John, that is correct, I am, You're correct, not the Texters. I'll definitely be sticking around at iHeart and doing Coffee and Company. I mean, I have to change the name of the show exactly, but officially the company man. So I'll just start by saying congrats to John

who has landed a new opportunity along with you, know this show. He's not leaving us, which you know, I would have a panic attack if that was the case. But John previously worked and I guess he still does now until I believe next week, next Friday. Yeah, he works as a producer and really a part of it of an Indiana sports show that takes place every morning weekdays and it's on I believe a few different radio stations throughout the state of Indiana, and it's a very much, I you, a

Hoosier centric show. And he has parlayed that into an opportunity now elsewhere to do his own show and not just be somebody that is sort of behind the scenes producing and you know, contributing, but kind of running it. He's going to have his own show covering the Hoosiers. So I'll let you give the specifics here to our listeners because I know you're super excited about it.

Yeah, I'm very excited. I haven't revealed a ton of details yet, like the name or the logo, that type of stuff, but I'll be working for Hoosier Illustrated. They're part of the Full Ride network. They're kind of a they've been around for a couple of years and they're they've I'm just really excited to work with Alec and Kyler. There are guys who I've worked with previously and I'm just so, who's your had a loss for words?

Honestly, it's something I'm very nervous about and even talking about it right now, I'm nervous. But I'm just super excited to finally be able to do something that I've always i saying it's a dream of mine because it's it sounds kind of corny, but it really is. No. I mean, look, you have You've put yourself in a position to where you are being brought in by a network, a site that has a built in following that covers

Indiana. Who's your athletics mostly basketball, football, and recruiting, and that's that's I mean, Look, you could do it by yourself and do a great job, but this, I mean this is something to where they clearly know they know your chops and know your your you know your skill and what

you can do. So I'm excited for you because I've oftentimes tried to delicately encourage John to, you know, not necessarily take risks, but like I'll put it this way, whenever I'm not here when I'm on vacation or whatever it may be, or if I'm just going to be out. I have for a while just wanted to give the show to John and him do whatever he wants to do. And that's not I mean, to be honest with

you, that that wouldn't be normal. There are people who've been doing who've done radio a lot longer than I ever have, and probably have had a lot more success than I ever have. But a three hour show by yourself is not something that a lot of people. I mean, I have people to this day that tell me like, I don't know how you do it,

and I'm like, well, it's not. I mean people sometimes you get used to it, right like you you make it work, and to be honest with you, that you were, I mean, it wouldn't be able to it wouldn't be done without you, Like it's you have to have somebody that is comfortable being with being a fixture within the show. And that's

the best part. I mean, the first time I ever worked with John, it didn't take but maybe a few weeks for me to connect more with him and say, hey, I want to I want to work with you. I don't know how we make it work. I don't know what we do, but in some form of fashion, I want to work with you. I think you have exactly what it takes. You clearly want to do that. You're not just here because you want to get a hot take off on the radio. You you know, you care about what you know.

And that's one thing that you know. Mason corny to some people, But John cares about this show. And I don't mean, you know, like he cares that he has a job. He wants the show to be successful, regardless if it's something he's saying or having any real role in in regards

to the content. And that's hard to find. Uh. It used to be, but things have changed, right Like, John, you're fresh out of college somewhat, and a lot of folks who went to school for the same thing you did, I think they realize, Hey, like that's a grind, and you may do it for a long time and never get the opportunity to actually kind of have your own your own platform, right Like,

It's just it doesn't happen people. And this might sound insulting to some people, but a lot of people don't like to put forth the amount of effort that you have to nowadays to do that kind of thing. And here's here's what I'd say. I get it. I understand, like I respect it like it's it's it's it's understandable. But you know, you've never once ever made it about you. You have always done anything I've needed you to do,

You've been able to do it. And uh it. You know, I don't sound like I'm unappreciative anybody else I've ever worked with, but having someone that actually wants each and every day for the show to be as good as possible is valuable to me in a way that I really didn't know.

I mean, And if somebody's just like, hey, it's my job, I'm coming in from three to six and I'm gonna I'm gonna produce the show and I'm gonna get out of here and whatever happens happens, Like if that's your mindset, like I don't, I can't say that you're I mean, you're doing your job. But your your willingness to like care and always want

to go above and beyond has always stood out to me. So I always wanted you to, you know, not just think about that when it comes to this show, that you produce and the other show that you produced for many years, but also take that towards something that where you're you know, it's your lane, it's really your your baby essentially, and that's that's that's kind of what this this is. So though I'm happy for you, it happen to be Indiana fans that just listen to the show because I guess maybe

you find some entertainment value for us. Maybe you'll check it out. We'll be on Who's Your Illustrating on YouTube and I don't know all the different other platforms that will it'll be available on, but it won't have like a radio affiliate at least off the bat that type of a thing. But check it out. I'm excited. It'll it'll air the week of Big Ten Football Media Days, which I believe is in a couple of weeks, and that's when

we'll get things started. I'm really excited. So Who's your Illustrated dot Com is the website, and uh, they've got I mean, they've got great content. The site looks super clean as somebody who used to independently run one of these things for many many years. Uh. I said that the first time I looked at it when you and I like their their site looks the content is so, it's very well presented, and the logo looks good.

And I don't know. If I don't know, I have no clue how we would compare to others, but I would be willing to bet in this market we probably talk Indiana more than anybody and that and that's mostly because I don't think anybody does talk Indiana at all. And I've learned throughout that that it's clearly not our biggest base. But there are people who listen to this show that that in these stations that are Indiana fans, and they don't get

enough coverage in this market. So we've given We've given you a little bit of it here with John and now he's gonna you know, he's he's inviting you to join him over and who's illustrated. So it will it be a post game show as well? Like is that still in the mix? Ye? So there will at the I got to get my words, collect my thoughts real quick. Anyway. I'm sorry to show on this I didn't give

John a heads up when I was going to talk about it. It was coming today, and honestly, I'm glad you didn't give me a heads up because it would have made me probably even more nervous. But it's gonna come out three times a week during the week, probably Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and then in season for football and basketball, they'll be postgame shows as well. I don't know if those will be live. The goal is

for them to be live. Obviously, I plan on doing the Louisville postgame shows with you as well, so you know, there'll be some logistical things that off to work out with that, But that's the gist of what's going to happen. Well, I'm happy for you because one, it's a good opportunity for you to really, you know, just dive in and and you know, take on a different role than what you have with this show and

the other show you'd worked on for a while. But you know, the Internet is a huge I mean, we tried to do what John's about to do, and we got shut down as far as it being a live video even if it's not just live but just a video component on the internet. And Indiana the fan I know this and you know this as well. The Indiana fan base basketball wise specifically, is a humongous audience, and I mean

massive. I mean I don't know what they can how they compare to others, but you know, true Donovan, for example, there are different within his what do you call it? The what's the the app discord? In his discord, there are different channels of each each fan base essentially where you just get in there and it's just kind of like a live message board. And Indiana has more interaction on theirs than any other team and it's not even

close. So congrats to you, John, and I can't wait to it in and listen, and I know a lot of our listeners will as well. So it's who's your illustrated? And give John a follow on Twitter if you're not already. He's ald In on the Air. Aldn on the Air is the Twitter handle? And who designed their logo? Who's realistract? I'm jealous? It's it doesn't look good. It looks good. It's very sleek, good stuff. So anyways, all right, let's see we need to

get to a break before too long. And I want to make sure I manage the five o'clock hours as best as I can. Uh So let's do this instead of diving right into a good question that came in on the text line about Pat Kelsey that I want to address h and a question that I can't give a great answer to, but it's actually a fun question. So we were just talking at the end of the hour about players now being able

to be paid. Even before nil was a thing, guys were still probably getting you know the bag right, like you know, a lot some people got in trouble for it, others never did. But like it's quite clear players were being paid, probably not what they're being paid now, but like it was happening. So somebody asked the question of now that like it's in the past and there's clearly gonna be no further punishment. Who can you tell us Nick got a lot of money to come to Louisville, And I I'm

gonna give it some thought during our next break. But I mean, I for reasons that that may not be expecting, Like I don't I'll save it because I could throw a few names out there, but then again, I hesit. I don't want maybe they wouldn't want it out there, even though they've probably talked about it before. But anyways, I'm gonna give it some thought during the break. As far as how I address it, because it is something interesting to talk about, but I also don't want to put anybody's

business out there and piss him off. And I also believe it or not, Like I think Louisville could have been better if they were willing to do what other schools were doing, which I know sounds rich considering the Brian Bowen thing and the Katita Pale stuff. But like I'll explain on the other side, but I do want to give a shout out to one of our loyal listeners. This young man I can call him a young man even though he's uh, he's you know, he's he's older than me, but he's still

on the younger side. His name is Alan Stone, and he is he is somebody that has listened to to me on this station, I think since I since I got here eight years ago, over eight years ago. Uh, he's great. I have partnered with his wife's company, a body by Rev And you know he's he's a good dude. Met him literally just through him being a listener. Great guy. His wife Amy is great as well, and he is all over the news. I mean, he's getting more

TV time than I've ever gotten. Because there's a Louisville woman that credits him for saving her life after her car caught on fire. So Alan Stone is his name. So I'll read to you real quickly the story here. That's over at WS eleven, but I'm pretty sure every station has covered it. But says here Don Simpson is lucky to be alive after her car caught on fire last week at the Chase Bank on Bargstown Road, and credits a bank employee was saving her life. Simpson said she had just got gas in her

car at Costco before stopping at the bank to use the ATM. Shortly after arriving, and employee told her that her car was smoking. Quote as soon as I pulled in, it started smoking. And I hit the and I hit the call button, she recalled to me. It didn't register. I couldn't get out because I was so close to the median. The next thing, the next thing she knew, her car was on fire. That's when

Chase employee Allen sprang into action. Quote. I got up, ran to the window to see what I was dealing with, and jumped right into action, he said. When Alan ran outside, he said he noticed Simpson messing with money and urged her to get out of her car using the passenger side of the vehicle. After she exited the car, the two stood about fifteen yards away from the car. Alan did another heroic action by running to the nearest fire station, which was a block away. I knocked on the door

and said, a lady's car is on fire. The fire department quickly went

to the bank extinguished the fire with no one suffering any injuries. So the video of the picture that I'm looking at here on WJS eleven dot com, like her car is fully in golden flames, like it's absolutely like, I mean, it's I mean, if she wouldn't have just I mean, I don't know, that's one of those things only those two could kind of explain, like what's going on in your mind at that time, But you know, hopefully she would have made her way out, but almost like she's kind

of froze, like not realizing what's happened. And yet she had some encouragement like hey, come out on this side. And you know, as soon as they were as it says, you're fifteen yards away. I mean, had she still been in there, I don't think things would have ended okay, But that Simpson is now behind the wheel of a rental car provided by her insurance company with a new outlook on life quote. It feels amazing just to know they cared more about me than the bank. It really restores my

faith in humanity. It's still unclear how the car caught on fire, but Simpson says she's just happy to be alive and looking for a reliable form of transportation. So shout out to Alan, a great dude who I've always known as a great dude. It doesn't take this act in this coverage for me to know it. But I'm happy that this is getting the coverage that it is because it's a good story. And man, we need more of those, don't we. I'm with her. This is a nice reminder of the

good that's out there in humanity. So Alan Stone, you are the man always appreciates your friendship and you're awesome. All right, quick break, we'll come back on the other side. We'll try to finish strong here before we get out of here for the weekend. It's Friday, it's five o'clock hour. Let's have some fun. You imagine walking up to a woman in the eighties when this song came out. This is part of a soundtrack too,

by the way, the movie Teen Wolf. But can you imagine walking up to a woman and saying, ain't no point in dressing the kill because you won't be standing still? She'd follow over. I'm not really sure that means, like, I mean, you could still dress nice and move around and

dance, but like you know, just an electric line. Good stuff here on a Friday, all right, So I've been doing some behind the scenes producing scheduling, I should say, And we're going to finish strong here with a conversation with the one the only doctor, Eric maclroy Prora have physical therapy. He's going to join us coming up here in about ten minutes or so, so looking forward to that. But let's get to some good questions that

come in on the text line. So this text I actually went back and forth with this texture because I felt like I knew where they were going and they confirmed. So the question initially was could Pat Kelsey be the first coach

to truly make the adida's partnership a valuable one in recruiting? And I kind of said, you know, do you mean because the other coaches didn't and me and this text are kind of on the same page, and I won't speak for them, and you don't know who it isn't I don't either, But Rick Bettino, you know, he clear he brought Adidas to Louisville. Like that's like Rick Patino brought Adidas to Louisville and it was a super lucrative

thing that Louisville is still benefiting from now. They would be with a brand like Adidas or Nike one way or the other. But like the Adida's relationship, which is wild to think that. It's kind of how Rick Patino's whole time here ended with the Adida's shoe you know, controversy with Bowen and all that kind of stuff. But Rick, you know, this is going to sound like I'm kissing his ass, and it's going to sound like I'm just the most naive person. And that's not where That's not how I want to

sound, and it's not really what I mean. But Rick Bettino is not someone who has an ego that would allow him to ever Like if dudes were getting getting benefits to play for Rick and like shoe companies were helping out, not to say he wouldn't want it, but Rick is such a and that's why a lot of the guys who had offers money, like the five Stars that came here, that didn't work out. It wouldn't a compatible fit.

If Rick thought you were paid to come and play for him, he would not want you because he thinks you should be paying to play for him. That's that's who he is, especially during that time. So the Christian Dawkins documentary was and I don't know how many people watched it. It's on HBO. I mean it wasn't. I mean, it was only really promoted by

HBO. It was so well done. But Christian Dawkins confirmed what I always believed was pretty obvious, and that is that like Rick, Bettino didn't talk to anybody, not because he wasn't you know, not because he was such the He's a choir boy who didn't you know, didn't know that rules were being broken, but his ego would not let him. I met Rick Withtino three times in my life. Only on one occasion did I actually speak to him, like, you know, in a conversation that maybe lasted, you

know, a little bit longer than his encounter with Karen Cipher. If I'm being honest with you, so you know, like he you know, and again who am I Like, I'm nobody, but like like he's someone that, like you don't get that close to Rick. Nobody gets that close to Rick. So the notion that like Adidas wanted to be rubbing it like put it this way, Bill self was boys with TJ. Gas Nola of Adida's

Merle code. Those guys He's buying pictures of beer for people at the at the Peach Jam, like Bill self, what he really benefits from from yucking it up and being one of the boys with people Rick Rick's Rick is the most unrelatable person ever. I mean, like I'll never forget it. He did a show at Tumbleweed with the Coaches Show at Tumbleweed on Preston Highway outer

Loop one time and he was looking around. He said this on the air by the way looking around while sitting there doing the Coaches show, and he said, what country are we in? Like he he we are, all pleads to him. So on the Adidas thing, like even if the the the cause, let's be real. Rick Potito, certainly in his prime at Louisville, is a bigger name than Bill self, and no offense to Bill

self. He's now in that group two championships. But Bill self will play the game with the boys because these guys got stupid, but they got drunk. They were intoxicated on rubbing elbows and being cool with the coaches that run college basketball. Rick ain't let you in the circle to do that with him

because he's the godfather. So had he been in, had he been in the you know, had he been doing what Bill self was doing and some of these other guys were doing, he probably would have gotten more ditas players. To be honest with you now, with Chris Mack, I think Chris would have. But you know, Chris actually had the excuse that Kenny Payne used all the time, and that was this It was hard to recruit.

It was hard to recruit elite players because even though they may not care about a tournament band, they don't want to go to a team that's like, that's that's what people think of him. Oh they just got hit with a two year postseason band. Like there really was a cloud the entire time Chris Mack coached here. Not to say he would have landed all these players,

because let's be real, he's not the name that Rick matino is. But he could have benefited from it, and he wanted to, but it was hard, Like it was not easy to go get elite recruits because of that. And you can say, well, others were doing it. Yeah, other like others like Bill's elf who you know again and larger than life coach, well not larger than life coach as far as personality, but like it's

different at Kansas. And you know what, Bill self got an extension when they got in trouble, which gave those recruits pretty good assurance that, you know what, they're gonna be okay, little of a fire Repertino, which essentially made people think they know they're guilty and they know they're gonna get in trouble. So can he payn He wouldn't wear Adidas, he had coaches on his staff, we're Nike, Like, you're not gonna get any help from

that. So that's a good question. I think Pat Kelsey's clearly going to embrace Adidas. He already is, and he might be the coach that actually, really, you know, we see some benefit from being the highest paid partner with the Three Stripes brand. And by the way people can talk in Nike, clearly has more. Nike is a bigger company, they have a bigger circuit, the eybl and you're always gonna be you can't just recruit kids

from Adidas. But Adidas has some really good players as well. And I'll tell you this, a guy who may being the number one player in America in the twenty twenty five class. His name is Darren Peterson and he is an Adida's kid, and he apparently bawled out yesterday at the Peach Jam and it sounds like him Carlos Boozer's kid are going to be one A, one B in this class. And he's already visited Kansas, He's going to visit USC and Louisville is believed to be the other school in the mix here.

So again, I'm not getting Pat Kelsey and coached the game here yet. Let's be real. However, if in fact, you know, they get Darren Peterson on campus, they've got some momentum, They've got the Nile money that is there. I mean, that could be, that could be like because Louisville, in my opinion, has never landed a kid where you really felt like their Adida's affiliation was a factor. They've lost kids for that,

no doubt. And they've had kids that have come in and they were Adidas guys, but like, you know, it didn't feel as if that was that was a huge factor. So you know, we'll see. I mean, there are some really talent players on the Adida circuit. That and by the way, Donovan Mitchell is still an Adida's guy, one of the highest paid guys with Adidas. Like that that can help you too. All right, quick break, we'll come back on the other side. Finished the week

strong with our man, doctor Eric McElroy pro Reha physical therapy. So it looks like the you know, the weather tomorrow gonna be ninety and sunny, which you know is hot. But you know, at least if you can, you know, get around a pool and maybe avoid some of this humidity, that could be you know, it's still gonna be hot as hell. I can't there's no way to like sugarcoat it, enact as if that's not going to be extremely brutal conditions. But I do plan to be at a

pool tomorrow for my nephew's birthday party, which which will be enjoyable. But man, next week is gonna be hot. I mean, ninety six is the high for Monday and Tuesday. Yeah, gonna be warm, gonna be a scorcher, and I guess that you know, that's that's that's what happens. Happens this time of year. So a lot of beers are going to

be drank. I know that for sure. And uh, you know water, mix in some waters, because you know, when it's hot outside and you're pounding beer, it could it could feel as if hey, that's you know, that's that's quenching the thirst. But man, it's not necessarily hydrating. So so stay safe out there. All right, let's bring it in. He's doctor Eric McElroy from pro Rea Physical Therapy. How we doing, Eric? Doing great? Nick? I love your public service announcement. You

just drink plenty of water when you're pounding beer. Yes, put it on a T shirt. If you're pounding beers, mix in some h mixing some water, some hydration. It's certainly essential. So uh real quick. I wanted to get to the USA team USA the basketball team, of course. I think this roster currently that's about to go head off to the Olympics and represent the United States is as good as a roster that we've had in quite

some time. I mean, we've always dominated when it comes to basketball, but occasionally there's guys that, for other reasons just decide not to play. And I think right now there's one guy not playing that I feel like, if we're going to include the best this country has to offer as far as talent, uh, he's not playing and it's because he's coming off of an injury. And that's John Morant. I mean, John Morant kind of not a forgotten guy, but he had some issues a couple of years ago,

and he had an injury last year. But I think when healthy, John Morant is somebody that is clearly good enough to represent Team USA. But it sounds like he's now cleared to play. I mean, he's not going to go to the Olympics, but he only played nine games after coming off that suspension because of a torn labrum and his right shoulder. You know how with that injury, you know, the timeline it seems to be, you know, pretty pretty typical. But I feel like the shoulder is one of those

things you know, he's probably gonna be a little rusty. Like it's like when you're rehabbing that injury, I imagine you're not doing you know, the actual basketball activities that you're going to be doing in a game. Oh, absolutely, absolutely not. And I think you know, we kind of take for granted coming back from a shoulder injury for basketball. I've got a guy right now coming back from an injury from a shoulder injury, and he's also

returning to high level basketball. And I think what you know, we forget is not just their ability to go up and rebound or defend or for a post player or you know, block a shot, but you know, the ability to shoot from all areas of the court over and over and over again throughout a game and do it effectively and with accuracy. And you know, those are things we call it appropriate reception. And also you know, developing

their neuromodor control. Getting all that back and basketball is extremely important. And I think that you know, those are things that as you you know, rehab a basketball player back, such as John Morant, as active as he is on the court, he's all over the place, he is rebounding, he's shooting from all over the place, he's dunky, he's doing whatever he has to do. We have to think about those things because the goal is for him to come back and play as if he wasn't hurt, and so

you know they're gonna shoot with weighted basketballs. You know, as part of the rehab process. It's not just the stuff that you would see quote unquote in the click. It's things like, you know, getting him in the gym, starting with a weighted ball, progressing that, you know, oversized balls, liner balls, speed. You know, there's a lot of things that go into the rehab process. Did we lose your Hello you there? Oh, did you lose me? No? I got you, We got

you? Sorry about that. So, I'm sure there's all kinds of different ways in different sports where a certain injury can occur. But with a torn labram, I mean, is there a with basketball players you mentioned you're you're treating an athlete that's coming off of that as well that's also a basketball player. Is there a common theme as far as how that how that occurs?

Uh? Yeah, I mean a lot of times if in basketball can come from a fall, uh you know for sure, like falling an outstretched arm or uh, you know, going up and you know, we it's it's a violent when you're content, Like when you go up and you contend to rebound for instance, that can be a violent play. You know, I think we take that for granted, uh, and that can create you know, an anti or dislocation of the shoulder or movement of the shoulder. Uh,

that can create a laborl tear. Dislocations create a different type of label tear. It's called a bank guard tear. But there's other label tears that can happen. It can happen from hanging on the rim, something silly like that makes sense. No aggressive violent dump. Sorry, my kids are getting out of car. Oh good. So there's things like that can happen that

can create shoulders and injuries in basketball that we we take for granted. Obviously we see falls and you know, somebody gets undercut, things like that, but there's also things that can happen just defending a player or challenging a shot or like I said, you know, unfortunately really cool aggressive dunk where they have to hang on the rim or something can really create injuries of the shoulder. Doctorrek McElroy, prot have physical therapy, is our guest joining us here

on Sports Talk seven ninety. So. We did talk last time about Connor McGregor and his injury situation. He was not able to be part of one of the most recent UFC events. That of course was a big, a big fight that was promoted, and we now know that a pinky toe injury has been a factor in that. And I've had some issues with toes, not the pinky but Dustin Poitier, of course, a big, big UFC fighter, well known, he's he was quoted yesterday in the story saying a

pinky toe doesn't sound like a reason to pull out of a fight. I'm gonna share my thoughts on that statement and then get yours. That tells me that Dustin Pourier has never actually had a toe injury, because those things may seem like, oh, you're being a whim, but man, toes are important well, especially when you're in a sport that requires the level of kicking and striking. This balance too, right, yeah, and balance? Now, you know, generally speaking, your fifth metatar soul, your and your

we would call it the fifth philangye of the toe. Actually not necessarily the pinky toe. But you know you could get away with not having that toe. I mean, you know it's it would be way more concerning obviously to lose a big toe. I mean, that could end a career of any athlete for that matter. So you know, could you know, I could see where someone may be challenging how legit it is. I do think that, like we talked about last time, you know, these athletes, small

change makes a big difference. You know, the talent gap is not that big when you the further along you get in any sport, including mixed martial arts. Now used to be bigger in mixed martial arts, but now it's not, especially when you know you have an athlete like Connor McGregor who's been around, he's older now he's not as young. And you know, little things, small things make a huge difference and can lead to the difference between

winning a fight and losing a fight. And like you just said, his balance, his ability to stabilize on that foot, to kick, to defend, to you know, to defend a takedown, you know, to all of those things that you know, to generate power. If it's his lead foot and he's going to strike somebody, he can't put his weight correctly on that lead foot to generate power into his punch, that's going to impact his fight. And you know, the goal is to win. And if he

doesn't feel like he's capable to fight at the optimal level. That's his choice, and he can pull out of that fight, all right. So back to the scorching temperatures that we've got coming our way. In fact, it's hot as can be outside right now. It seems what advice would you give for those who still want to work out outside, Like, obviously, if you've got a gym, there's probably still gonna be hot in there, but

it's temperature controlled. But you know, I was on my way in today leaving the neighborhood and I saw somebody who lives the street over and they're out, you know, running not you know, it's a normal thing for them, And I'm just thinking, like, man, I hope that's safe. Oh yeah, And real quick, Nick, can I go back on the on the pinky toe thing real quick? Just the one thing I will say

about about sports. Every sport's different. And if I have a you know, I can play some sports where I could get away with a pinky toe injury, fracture you know, fifth benut of tar soul injury, and I say a fracture, and there's other sports you can't. So I do think that we have to keep those things in mind that it's all you know, and it could be even positioned driven in some ways. So anyways, as far as people getting out, you know, first of all, use common

sense. I think we lose that sometimes in healthcare or anything in our own health. You know, when it's really hot and you're gonna try to get out in exercise, you know, you go to the cooler periods of the day, the mornings, maybe into the evenings if it's not too late. Obviously, you got to hydrate ahead of time. Hydrating the day of is not gonna work. You gotta continuously hydrate, uh, and to the point where you know your body is staying hydrated before you go into whatever activity that

is. The other thing is is hydrate slowly so you don't want to jug, you know, chug a bunch of water. You end up just urinating most of that out inter city doesn't absorb it as well. So you know, when we hydrate sipping water throughout the course of the day, or you know, as you're building that up, if you know you're gonna be really active and hanging out, or even if you're gonna go out and party,

you know you should be hydrating. You know, over a period of time, not just trying to chug it all once and then your body's only gonna absorb so much. I mean, it just can't. So those are things that I would think about in food. I mean, you know, we think about water. Water is the medium to get electrolytes to your to the muscles so you don't cramp or have issues. It's not in itself what creates the hydration, so the electrolytes do that. Now, obviously there are drinks

that have you know those in them. Now, fruits, you know, make sure eating a lot of fruits, even vegetables, things like that that are going to give you, uh, those electrolytes that allow you know that your body's gonna utilize uh and I actually utilize utilize it more effectively because generally, again we're eating those at a different type of taste than trying to chug a gatorade, where a lot of that's just going to be urinated out.

So you know, keep those things in mind when you're when you know you're gonna be active and you know you're gonna be doing things that are gonna challenge in the heat of the day. And yeah, that's all I got. Eric you are the man. I appreciate you making time for us as we get the weekend started. Stay hydrated, stay safe. We talk sooner, right, my friend, that sounds good. Nick talk you all right? Take care again. That's doctor Eric McElroy from pro Rea Physical Therapy. Always

appreciate the conversation. Very informative stuff as always, so good stuff. All right, we're out of here. Hopefully you guys enjoyed yourself. Uh. If not, we'll come back on Monday. We'll try it again. Have a good weekend in everybody,
