It's time for coffee and company, fueled by Thornton's on Sports Talk seven nine day. Now Here's Nick Coffee. For many years now, as soon as one of the local media members gets a picture of the prices for everything you can buy at Derby, at Churchill Downs, I should say during Derby Week, not just Derby, the men, julips, the lilies, you know, domestic beer, premium beer. We get a price list and it usually results in everybody just claiming, oh my goodness, the greed of Churchill Downs
and look, things are going to be expensive during Derby Week. That's always been the case. But what I don't remember is the price the year before. Like, I feel like these prices are very similar to but people were paying last year. The only one that is different is the mint julep. So the mint jewlip went from seventeen bucks to twenty two dollars, So it's a five dollars increase in just one year, and that is a very expensive
drink. And I actually think mint julips. I wouldn't want to pound mint jewlips, if you know what I'm saying, but I'd try to get at least one per Derby week. Oaks lily good. But if I was paying, you know, I wouldn't pay for that just because it's I don't like it that much. You can get a Woodford Reserve Spire for twenty two bucks as well. Your let's see here, your your wine eighteen dollars by the
glass. The Jackson family wins a very expensive glass of wine, and then your beer domestic is thirteen, Premium is fourteen, white Cloth fourteen as well. And I love Michelob Ultra. I mean, it's not my go to. I'm a Bushlight guy. I'd say, here's my order, bush Light, then bud Light, then Michelo. But like, why is michelob considered a premium beer? What makes it premium? Maybe because it's I mean,
I don't know, this doesn't make it premium. But I think maybe the fact that it's the full brain is michelob Ultra, maybe that makes it seem a little more premium than it actually is. Yeah, I mean, I can tell you, first of all, it's not premium, but they call it that. But maybe maybe the naming is is that And I don't know.
For a while, I felt like their marketing, their branding was like the in shape person that wants to drink beer, but maybe not have as many calories like light kind of. I mean it might have been Lance Armstrong, who was their big endorser, you know, before he you know, finally admitted to being a cheater. But yeah, I mean, I I'm gonna just to save a buck. I would out like I was there on Saturday and I had two beers, and you know that point almost had to
file for bankruptcy. But I decided to go with the you know, domestic and not the premium because you know, I just don't think it's worth a dollar more. Even though I like the michelob better than bud Light, It's just to me that's such a reach. But hey, it's not just Churchill Downs A A lot of places do that, like they it's like an up charge, and you'd never think it because they all come from the same family. Let's be real here. You know, it's a traditional light beer.
But the tickets we talked about last week just to get in, like you know, general admission for the infield, and that, by the way, that's what it is now. The infield is general admission, and you can't get anywhere else other than the infield, So it's one hundred and thirty for
Derby and then I think it's seventy five for Oaks. So if you go that route, let's just say, on Derby you're doing the infield and you get one mint julib, you're already one hundred and fifty two dollars in with no horses that you've bet on just yet, and you know, maybe not even counting what you potentially paid to park. So that is something that a lot of folks, I would say, are just like, yeah, nah,
I can't do that. And I'm not saying that Churchill Downs doesn't seem to really care, but like that's not their priority anymore, right, because I think what they learned during the year where they had, I know, you know, there was there was the derby in the in the fall, which was weird, right I think it was it September. I think it was, Yes, yeah, and that was just weird, but everything was weird at that point, right. That was during that was twenty twenty.
Well, then in twenty twenty one they had the Derby once once again and it was just very limited capacity if you remember. And I think they learned a lot during that experience because you know, the people were still willing to pay, you know whatever, and that's the thing. They know they can probably charge whatever during derby and probably during you know, even any day this
week, and a lot of people will still pay. And I think you used to be able to get general admission and your ticket would get you you know, you get in the infield and you can you know, you don't have any seat, but you can kind of roll them around. And that would lead to a lot of people who do pay for premium tickets premium areas. And there's a lot of people who were just ga that were kind of
in their in their space. And I don't know, if you know, there was enough people that buy tickets that had you know, that were complaining about you know, the peasants as some people call them, or they just realized like, hey, if we do this really expensive pricing but it includes all inclusive drink and food, we'll still sell plenty of tickets and we'll make
a lot of money. And you know overall, it's I mean, I just cannot I can't sit there and say that spending like let's just look at what the price is for a derby ticket right now, Like I'm sure it's gone up since last week when we looked. But let's go to Ticketmaster. So if you go and just first thing you see on Saturday for you know, find tickets Churchill Downs that's Premier dining. What the hell is that? Uh? Let's see. I guess this is showing you kind of like where
you know, yeah, here, here we go. I'm trying to find like the most generic tickets that aren't GA but also aren't you know, like know in millionaires row or whatever. I mean, this ticket I just looked at as fifteen hundred dollars. That can't be the cheapest, although I guess it wouldn't be that big of a shocker. All right, So right now you can get in on Saturday Vivid seats here. They've got you know, section one eighty three two tickets eight hundred and sixty dollars each. I can't
I can't say that that's a good deal. Like I can't say that you know, that's worth it. I mean, I guess it. Only it all comes down to that person who pays that money. Is it worth it to them? And if it is, then it's worth it by definition. But because you get all inclusive drink, so like those twenty two dollars mint julips. You can get as many of them as you want, you know, the lily twenty two bucks, you can get as many of them as
you want. Food, you can get as much as you want. So it's still the right way to go if you're gonna go, because I just can't. I don't know how any I don't know why. I mean, I'm sure there's clearly a market for it. It's probably people who want to go, but like you know, aren't even old enough to drink, and they just want to go. Like high school kids probably will go to Oaks and do the infield because that's you know, that's that's where they're going to
congregate. Like I just, I don't know any people can spend their money on whatever they want. Everybody has their own preferences. But if you go to the Derby or the Oaks and you do just the infield, you're probably somebody that is there and you're only there to be, you know, take in the experience and make bets, right, because there's no other reason to justify I mean, because you know it just you're gonna drink and eat.
It's still I think makes more sense to, I don't know, eight hundred and fifty nine dollars per ticket there that and that's the cheapest one right now. That probably, you know, would mean you'd have to eat a lot of food and drink a lot of booze, which people do. It's Derby, right, that's that's it's a big party. But I mean just seeing the new Paddock over the weekend. I was there on Saturday night. We took the family and had a great time, and the Paddock is beautiful,
like it's it's I mean, it's state of the arc. I mean,
it's it's awesome. But you know, you're you're already hearing a lot of people mention it not necessarily catering to you know, locals and people who've been going for decades and that kind of stuff, And like I get the complaints, but I also get Churchill Down's decision to do this because like they don't need it's a business, they don't need to cater to those people because they can do what they're doing here and really charge whatever they want and and people
will pay. You know, I was with friends on Saturday and I hadn't thought of this, but it did seem as if like going for opening night, it was you were paying Derby prices for a lot of stuff, and they they, you know, they said that they could be that they're just really trying to cash in on this being Derby one fifty. So we're going to really make everything crazy because it's one fifty. And if people wonder why there's more money that we have to spend, it's because it's one fifty.
I have no clue. I mean, I wouldn't know if that's something that goes into consideration. But yeah, if you've not been back to the track in the last couple of years and you go this week, it'll be it looks a lot different. I mean it's nice, but like everything is very separate, right, Like we had you know, essentially general admission tickets and we you know, we could walk around, but like you know, we you know, we were over where you have bleacher seats, which actually made
it perfect for the kids. They could see the horses. We had,
we had plenty of space, Like it was actually perfect for us. But you know, they've made it to where you're either going to pay for a premium ticket and be around, you know, like days of just roaming around Churchill downs kind of you know, maybe not sitting in a box you know, you're not supposed to sit in but like days of just roaming around, finding a spot for a few minutes and then going to a different spot a few minutes later, Like that's gonna be a lot more difficult to do.
And if that makes you sad because you won't get to experience the track that we used to, I get it. But I also understand, like, like for example, for me as someone who again Churchill Nuns, doesn't need me, right, They're gonna do just fine without me. I'm not somebody that's a big horse racing fan. I go, you know, I go during Derby Week a few times, mostly for work, and I'll go occasionally in the spring, you know, after Derby Father's Day that kind of stuff.
We go. We actually go on Thanksgiving, which has actually become a tradition for my family for Thanksgiving. So like they're not catering to me, and they don't need to, why the hell would they, right, But the experience you know that I remember for twenty years of going is gonna be different, and that is a little bit of a bummer. I'd be a liar if I told you, like, I'm bothered by it, but you know, they invested how much money into this new paddock. I mean,
it's an insane and I think they got their money's worth. It looks phenomenal, but it was kind of you know, we knew they were doing construction on you could tell that last year, right, But now seeing it, it's beautiful, But it's just to know that it's just so different than what it once was. Is you know, it is kind of sad, but again not sad like these greedy sons of bitches. I'm just saying it's sad because for you know, somebody who's lived here my whole life like he does,
it's gonna look totally different than what I was used to. But again, they could. They could probably charge double what they're charging, and I still think people pay like not us, not locals. Maybe you could if
you could afford it, and if so, then God bless you. But like this is this is the kind of event that, in fact, the more expensive it is, I think the more type of you may get more people inclined to go, because rich people want to be a part of rich people's stuff, right at least I would, you know, I'm not rich myself, you know, don't know a who lot about that lifestyle, but I can imagine that's the case. I would agree with you. I think
the more expensive it is that you're going to attract that crowd. Yeah, and in that crowd that you know would be attracted towards that. Again, it's all because they have the money and there they want to be. You know, like eight hundred and sixty bus ticket, that's not gonna that's not gonna break their bank. I mean that, Yeah, you're right, but that's just because that that price is not meant to cater to anybody from this
area. I mean rich people in this area, but like you're catering to the people who are trying to have a once in a lifetime experience or those who just are made of money. Yeah, it could be something to where you know, maybe you're not made of money, but it is something that is so special to you that you really make it. You make you make sure you budget throughout the year to where you can afford it. Point Yeah,
but take away Churchill, horse racing all that kind of stuff. I feel like even if I had unlimited amount of money, which I don't, there's certain prices for things that like I'd rather just not know because if I know that, I'm gonna be thinking, well, this experience better be amazing because of what I paid, you know what I mean? Like I would think if I, you know, even if I had I guess if you got money to blow and you've never had to look at a price for anything,
then I guess you know, it's not something you think about. But like if if somebody gave me a ticket and like, you know, told me, hey, I'm gonna pay for your eight and sixty bucks for you to go to Derby, I mean, I would be very grateful, but I would think to myself, like, man, like they're gonna spend air in sixty bucks on me. I got something else they could have done, you know what I'm saying, Like I got something else that they could have
put that towards. But yeah, anyways, those are your prices for UH for this year's UH premiums at at Churchill downs twenty two dollars for a jewel up, twenty two for a lily, and premium beer, which I'm not even sure what the premium beer is outside of michelob I'm sure there are some other ones, but the domestic right, the bud Light, Budweiser. I'm assuming they have Cores and Miller. Those are thirteen bucks, which I feel like they've been thirteen. Not that those are cheap, but that's I think
they've been thirteen for many years now. All right, it is Coffee and Company. We are field By Thornton's here on Sports Talk seven to ninety. Appreciate you hanging out with us if you are just now joining us. The big news from earlier this afternoon, right around noon, Jaden Quaintance made his commitment to Arizona State. They jumped in at the last minute last week.
And really it is wild because the school that ended up landing Jaden Quaintance is the school that had never been mentioned, had never been mentioned until last week whenever he canceled his visit to Memphis, and then sure enough they get him on campus in Tempe and he commits. So if you missed at the beginning of the show, look, this is this is somebody loul have clearly wanted and they didn't get. So they lost him. You know, it happens.
They've they've lost other players too throughout the process. Here, that's normal. It happens to everybody, and this would have been a big splash. Trust me, I really think that things were lining up here for this to be special, because yeah, I would have been a big an il price tag, but I think it'd be worth it because one, he's a really good player that you could get for two years, and I think it's a
statement type of get for Pat Kelsey if you could have got him. But also, yeah, he's young, but he's a fena like he's believed to be a guy that could be eventually, you know, an NBA superstar. And I know he's sixteen, but I also think he could still play next
year and be productive. Now, would he be a twenty five and eleven guy, probably not, But having him around the current team that Kelsey's put together, I think would have been a really good mix because it's a bunch of old dudes, a bunch of veterans and you know, grown men, and he's sixteen, and I just feel like that would be a good scenario for a young guy. Right If you're building your team with a bunch of
freshmen and one of them is sixteen, then that'd be tough. Just we've seen in recent years that's just really not the way to go about it anymore. It'd be very, very tough to win that way. So it's a bumber, no doubt. But he apparently wanted a guaranteed starter spot, and it sounds as if Pat Kelsey wasn't willing to make that guarantee. And you know, I think year in years past, you could probably you could probably you know, fib a little bit and say what you got to say to
get them on camp, to get them to commit. But now with everything being so transactional, it could get messy, and you know, it sucks. But this is just the truth, right, Perception is reality. You got to be able to control your own narrative. And if there are people, you know, if you've become the school that no longer you know that, if you become the school that's not honored the coach, I guess I
should say that's not honoring what he promised to kids during their recruitment. Then like that wouldn't mean some would say, you know, I think this is
actually the way to go about it. These guys aren't entitled anything, but right now we all are aware that there are concessions in place for these people to you know, these kids to commit, and you just got to be careful about that because I don't think you want people accusing you of being you know, miss you know, being dishonest about nil or about you know, roll, that kind of stuff. As silly as it sounds, it matters, right. That's why I like, there are people out there that truly
believe Louisville's transfers in recent weeks have something to do with money. It's nothing to do with that. And I'm talking about on the football side now. So I think the decision to not give him a guaranteed spot as a starter was a wise one, especially with a bunch of veterans you already have coming in and Pat Kelsey, you know, we're still learning a lot about him, will continue to learn a lot about him. But it's one of those
things you hear coaches say and some will say it's corny. Maybe it is, but it's true. His program, it went through Charleston and at Louisville, will be that everybody's going to earn what they get, and I think in a way he really sells that to, you know, some of the guys that he's already been able to land and it's worked I mean it's helped him. I think we heard that firsthand when we talked last week with the
Terrence Salworth junior so Arizona State Bobby Hurley. They have landed Jaden Quaintance, and I mentioned this earlier for those who missed it. I'm curious if we end up figuring out more info about this as far as if it was a factor in the decision, But I know it could not have hurt Arizona State's chances to land this young man, knowing that they are going to have a full docu series being done on their team and Hurley next year. I mean
it's being shopped to the streaming networks. Apparently Hollywood producers have already kind of put it in motion. Now they're just trying to find somebody to put it on their network. And you would think they'd go after the better Hurley who's won two national championships, But Bobby Hurley is more of a character which could make for better television. And Arizona State, I mean, that's a beautiful
place and the campus I'm sure will look great on this show. So I don't know enough about those that are guiding and advising Quaintance throughout this process. But if you are on a show like that and it's a huge hit on something like Netflix, you can't you can't buy that reach. You cannot buy that visibility because people who watch basketball are gonna know. But you're at that point. You're talking about an audience that you know maybe would never watch you
at Arizona State. But if you're on that show and you're a likable character and people really love you, then you know that can only help you. Again, it's it's it's a market you wouldn't get just by being a basketball star. An example of that is The Wrestler's Show on Netflix, which yes I was, I was in briefly. Do you know Cash Flow, the wrestler? Yes? Did you do? You have you heard what happened with
him? I haven't followed him since, so showed this out. Sylvester Stallone, Rocky, he has a show on he has a show on Paramount that let me make get it's a good show and I can't think of the name of it, but he saw the he saw the documentary on Netflix. Wrestlers really really liked cash which I don't know how you couldn't because he's a great guy. You know, kind of a journeyman wrestler. That's just you know,
grinding and out on trying to make it. Still in his mid forties, Well, Sevester Stallone saw the show, loved cash, reached out to him. He now has a regular role and he's filming as we speak today in La because he's going to be in Tulsa King season two. How cool is that? That is awesome and that's something that doesn't happen without that show.
Right, So there's you know, if I was a kid and I was in Quaintance's shoes like that, that wouldn't be I guess why I make a decision, But I could certainly see it being a you know, somewhat of a factor. We got another Derby horse for you guys to hear about, courtesy of our man, mister Jody Dilling. Which one we go into next, John, This one is Forever Young. Let's hear it now,
look at the Kentucky Derby Field one by one, Forever Young. In recent years, Japanese horses have been dominant in horse racing on the international stage, winning horse races all over the world. But the one race day it's still like to win is the Kentucky Derby, and many believe this year a Japanese horse has the best shot they've ever had. UAE Derby winner Forever Young, one of the top international horses ever entered in the Kentucky Derby, comes in
undefeated. The bay son of Real Steele, is trained by Yoshita Yagahagi, and it will be ridden by you Say Saki. Forever Young went three four to three as a two year old, debuting on October twenty four. He began his three year old season in the Saudi Derby on February twenty fourth, where he started slow and was wide, but still won that race by ahead. Next up it was the UAE Derby, where Forever Young won by two links and stamped his ticket to the Kentucky Derby. It'll be the first Kentucky
Derby for trader Yoshito Yagahagi. It's also the first Derby for jockey you Saki, who was in town to work full horse just over a week before the Kentucky Derby and said through a translator that yes, this it could be the best chance that Japan has ever had to capture the roses. Forever Young, the fifth Japanese bread horse, to run into Kentucky Derby. Horses from the UAE Derby O for nineteen Forever Young, the UAE Derby winner, trying to
become the first Japanese bread horse to win the Kentucky Derby. All right, so we do have some updated news here on Penny Boone, who is looking for a school he can get into academically to finish his college football career, and he is visiting Central Florida right now. So the fact that he's visiting there, I would assume has well, I don't know. You've got to
keep in mind the Kentucky visit. It was probably pretty convenient for him because imagine he was still in the area, but he was committed to Kentucky essentially, it sounds like, and then they realized, yeah, he cannot he can't transfer here because he can't get into school. But right now he's visiting Central Florida, so maybe that's where he ends up. All right, It is Coffee and Company. We are fielded by Thornton's here on Sports Talk seven
ninety. Appreciate you hanging out with us. We will update you on the roster tracker for both schools. Obviously, Louisville has hit a little bit of a I don't want to say a lull or a I mean, they're not done. I'm sure they're still working. But the fans who are impatient were lucky last week because last week was very hectic, right, a lot of moving parts. You had a big wave of visitors for a couple of weeks, a couple of weekends, i should say, and then each of those
weekends ended up in you getting at least two players, right. It was Corn Johnson last Monday, and then you ended up landing cater Or, who I still think is going to be a big time guy. So you know, there's other guys that are in on. But as far as you know the next wave of visits, you know, I don't know if there's anything
set up just yeah, but trust me, they're still working. And look, they've got a visitor coming in here soon at least hopefully, and that is Osabor, the transfer from Utah State, who's one of the best players available in the portal. And he's he's currently visiting Kentucky and we'll see if he ends up still taking the visit to Louisville. And Mark Pope certainly has some momentum, right, now as they've landed a couple well a same momentum.
I mean it's not as if they've I don't think they've added, you know, elite players in the portal. But that's not to say Louisville has either. But they need bodies, right. These two programs are building rosters from scratch, and I think since Friday there's been three editions for Mark Pope. It started on Friday afternoon with the young man who transferred from San Diego
State and then also Oklahoma transfer Otega Away. I'm probably not saying that correctly, but he made his decision over the weekend, and then last night Andrew Carr, the big man from wake Forest, he committed following a visit and I remember him, you know, because wake Forest obviously is in the ACC and he was productive last year for Steve Forbes, averaged thirteen and a half points seven boards roughly, and we'll fit seemingly well with how Mark Pope wants
to play offensively. So the other visitor, Aiden Mahoney, he actually left Kentucky's visit and did not commit, committed to Yukon, so he was a Saint Mary's transfer. And then right now Kobe Brea, Is that right, Bria, Yes, he is one of the better players available in the portal right now, and I think he's visiting Kentucky as we speak. So the decision from Mahoney to end up at Yukon maybe that helps Kentucky there. I'm
not sure. And today was another one of those days where you could really if you're a Louisville fan like myself or a Kentucky fan, you know, I don't know if you had the same emotion that I did. And it's not like it was something that was powerful, But Kentucky fans are starting to pile on Louisville now, like you know, they didn't used to. For
we were lifeless. We were dead right, We weren't. We weren't like tracking recruitments and transfers because we stunk for two years and we knew even if we did get one, we probably were going to be underwhelmed because even with good players, Kenny Payin was gonna lose. But Jade Quayn's deciding to go to Arizona State in Louisville not getting him. It's the first time I can
remember like Kentucky fans were celebrating Louisville not getting a player. I mean, it's been a long time, and that's you know, that's what I'm not even I'm not faulting them. I get it, like that's what you should do, but it's it's it's been a long time since that's happened that I can remember, and it's another sign that this thing is back on. And I already know once these rosters are finalized, you know, you're gonna have varying opinions on each of these teams as far as how they did in the
portal. And that's already evident when you look at CBS Sports the Athlete Lee
twenty for seven Sports on three. I mean, you've got all kinds of different folks that are ranking players in the portal, and some are already starting to rank classes in the portal, and they're not in any way consistent, which is okay, Like you don't have to be like, you know, actually like it in a way because it at least lets you know that there's somebody who feels this way and this strongly about a player, and then somebody
else maybe doesn't feel as strongly. Like to me, it actually gives a little gives it a little bit of originality, Whereas I think, just my opinion that a lot of these rankings that you see from high school recruits, like they're all kind of following each other a little bit, if that makes sense. Like, you know, you wouldn't have a guy as a five star if three other services have him as a three, right, even if you loved him, you wouldn't do it because it would make you look like
the fool. You may be, right, But now these players that are in the portal, a lot of these people who are you know, putting these together, whether it be just their opinion or if they're using some kind of a system, which I think is silly act. There's no I don't think there's any metric out there. They're like, you know, it's truly
going to give you I mean, I don't know. Maybe there's a method to it, but like, I don't think analytics is going to give be great determining who in fact got good transfers, because again, the numbers from one level aren't the same as lighter numbers from a higher level. So either way it's going to be you know, it's gonna be all over the place.
And again, these guys have watched these players who are transferring, so you know, maybe somebody's really like for example, some I think it's the athletic They have Terrence Edwards Junior as one of the top fifteen to sixteen players in the portal as of today. There's some that have him in the top fifty, like right around fifty, So you know, it's varying. But again it's people's opinions who who have watched college basketball, and you don't have
to agree with it. They could be wrong, but actually think it's a little refreshing to see them that we have vastly different rankings and whatnot depending on where you look. But back to the rivalry here, like Louisville fans and Kentucky fans, when when it's all said, none of us are going to know how good any team is until we actually see them play. These are all brand new pieces nobody has ever played together. I mean literally, we're
all starting from scratch. But we're gonna be at each other's next about which team's better, right, because it's what we do and I'm looking forward to that. Are you going to take a look at this list again? Let's do it. So the Barnstable Brown, the I think the you know,
the biggest derby party, it's been going on for quite some time. Was founded by the twin sisters, Patricia Barnstable Brown and Priscilla Barnstable and it's been going on for Yeah, this is the thirty fifth year, so it's been going on that long and it's helped raise over twenty million dollars for the Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center. So a good event that brings in a lot of celebrities.
And each year the UNLIT they give us the list of who has been invited in RSVP, But I am curious do they get it, Like is it an invite that gets sent out every year or I'm just because there's some
people on this list. I'm gonna be honest with you, like I think they got invited when they were all when they when they had some momentum as a celebrity, and then they just every year send the rs VP back like hey, I'm coming again, Like, you know, I don't really know if I mean, I don't really know if some of these people will are or you know, like if you're putting together a list of celebrities to invite to an event like this, there's some names on here, that have been
here forever that I don't think you're, oh, we got we got to call that guy, like Joey Fatone. Yeah, gotta have Joey Fatone here. Vin Sink. He's just eating it up. Yeah, like he got invited once and he's like, well, you know, it's an open invitation. So every every year, you know, every year, I mean he's probably he probably is a good time. All right. So we did not know who Cole. So for those who don't know, there's clearly some names
on here that we're going to be familiar with, like Joey Fatone. You knew that was, didn't you. Yes, So there's other names where we may have an idea of who it is, but we may you know, we may be guessing. Cole Hauser is. It was the first name he mentioned, and I didn't the names sounded familiar. I guess to baseball player. But turns out it's ripped from Yellowstone. So he'll be there. Kid Rock, we know, Kid Rock. I think he's there every year.
Tracy Morgan, you know, no, Tracy Lawrence is who I'm Theracy Lawrence is a country singer. Tracy Morgan, any guests, No, I don't This is one where I feel like you should know. I'm gonna give you then. I mean, I'm gonna consider the age difference and still consider the fact that you should know this Morgan. I know it's I know the name sounds familiar, but I couldn't put a face on it. Comedian actor. Okay, google him real quick. You will instantly recognize him. That's one.
You know. Again, I'm not giving him hard time for not knowing what Tracy Morgan is because you know, maybe he doesn't. Maybe maybe he's looking at the picture and doesn't recognize him, know exactly who it is. Aaron Rodgers, you know who that is, right, Yes, all right, Josh Grobin. He's a singer, Yes, he's see he like an opera singer or something very soulful voice. Cherry, I'm sorry, Cheryl Lee Ralph, I have no clue. You know, I would guess an actress,
but I don't know who it is. I'm gonna say you're probably right, So Cheryl Lee Ralph is in fact an actress. And uh, let's see here. Yes, I'm looking at her picture now, she looks familiar. I'm trying to see if there's one specific thing she's mostly known for here, but yeah, she's been in quite a few movies. She looks familiar, but again I can't there's not a specific, like you know, big time movie that I'm seeing that like, you know, I would have seen
her in. So she's in the sitcom Abbot Elementary. I believe that's out right now. Okay, how many seasons it has? But I've heard the name, heard of that show before, gotcha? Gotcha? So that that speaks to I guess you know the recent relevance here, all right, Smokey Robinson singer, right of course, yes, and then Jack Harlowe, we know who that is. Let's do one more. Let's see why not a jud she's one of the jugs. Yes, Okay, I was a little
bit, a little bit worried you may not get that. And honestly, if you didn't know, it would make sense because you know, the Juds as far as music, have not been active and or relevant in a long time that I know of. But because of the Kentucky basketball that's how Oh yeah, yeah, well, I mean I haven't seen Ashley Judd around in a long time. I'm sure she used to be a maze. She was the celebrity fan for Kentucky for many many years, and I'm sure she still
is a fan. I just don't I don't know if she wasn't around for certain reasons. But yeah, Wine own a Judd is the older sister, and she's uh, I think she's doing the national anthem. Maybe okay, could be wrong and she's doing that or maybe she's doing Yeah, they announced it and I can't remember who it was, but one Owned. My mom is a big fan of Wine own A Judd. So therefore my sister was a super fan of One own a Jude when we were little kids. And
uh, my sister was in the Wine own A Judd fan club. Oh okay, and she got like she got like mail and would always like try to kind of flex on me about like, yeah, you see that Wine own a Judd member of the club. You see that hanging out on my wall, so you see it. Yeah, she thought it was quite a flexing back then. It was, honestly, this prestigious club. But that's old. I am John. Whenever we had like musicians and and and you
know people we were big fans of. It's in fan mail. Yeah he's all male, right, we can we can't look him up on the internet. Right, we got to write them a letter and send it to them and then they'll tell us to join their fan club. All right, quick break, we'll go back on the other side, wrap up the four o'clock hour, a disc, coffee and company, and we are fueled by Thornton's
right here on Sports Talk seven ninety. So this is either the second or third here of five oh Tuesday, which I guess has become the local day for locals at Churchill Downs during Derby week used to be Thrby and then Wednesday
it's champions Day. Okay, I mean, look, you can go any day you want, but this is the day where they really you know, cater to the city of LOUISVILLELLEU pavillions, not with like complimentary pricing or anything like that, but just some some things that you know, are features I should say that, you know, let you know, they're really you know, thinking of those that have you know, not necessarily any one person specifically, but just people who you know, know who know Louisville. Right.
So they have each race tomorrow non races, and they have a name that is in some former fashion, you know, a nod to Louisville's history. Race one is the Village eight theaters. Number two is the Hassen Hours, which that is one that I'm not really familiar with. That may be me showing my age, you know, not that i'm you know, not that
I'm a baby. John's a lot younger than me, but that may be like, for example, like one of them is toy Tiger, Like I know what that is, but I wasn't old enough to experience the toy Tiger. That's a club, right, like a club. Well we're a party club years ago. Yeah, it's it's Race eight. By the way.
The Bacon's department store around three, Yes, Bacon's, which I think became Did Bacons become Lazarus then Dillards or did there was Lazarus a different store anyways, Bacons was the department store that was in I think it was in the galleria down here, which which is where we are right now. Four Street Live before it's four Street Live. Number four is the Burger Queen. Number five is the Red Barn. Number six is Lentini's wrist Staurante. I've heard
of that. I know of that. I just don't know a whole lot about the history, but I certainly see that and know that it's some kind of a Louisville connection. Around seven is the Ear Ecstasy, which of course was one of the most known record stores in this area. I think they I could be wrong, but I believe they tagged and really made it a thing. Keep Louisville weird, like they had bumper stickers and stuff. Ear
Ecstasy, Keep louisvill weird. Where you could go and buy and sell music, like a lot of independent Like if you were a musician here locally, but you didn't have like a record deal with distribution, you could sell your music at Ear Ecstasy. Yeah. That's sad because I remember I used to go to that place every now and then, and they, like a lot of things, just don't exist anymore. And then number nine is the Jim Porter's Good Times Emporium. Let me tell you a little something about jim Porters,
John, tell me about it. So jim Porter's closed down. Gosh, it's been at least ten years maybe, Yeah, it was. It was a legendary establishment. Yeah, they closed down in twenty fifteen, and I only went twice. It was when I was just twenty one and I was you know, being doing what twenty one year olds do and experiencing different bars and you know, trying to have a good time. And I went once with some buddies, and I learned quickly, you know what that place
was kind of known for at that time. Now, maybe many years ago, some people listening had a different, uh had a you know, maybe Jim Porters was different to them. But in the you know, two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine era that that around that time, it was like the cougar bar, like where hot older women would would be there and they were they were you know, interested in in you know, hanging out and meeting with young dudes. I remember, this wasn't really a close
fit, more of an acquaintance. Were there all of a sudden, you know, we walk over to meet some friends who just showed up. He looked back, my buddies, you know, making out with some woman old enough to be his mom, just you know, at the bar just completely you know, just you know, looked like they were eating each other. I mean it was it was intense. And then, you know, sir, I look around. I realized, Wow, the majority of the women here are old enough to be our mothers. And it was you know,
it was it was a vibe. You know, it wasn't really my kind of thing at that time, you know, I was I think it was engaged to be married. But like then, and you talked to other you've been you've been to Jim Porters and it was like, oh, yeah, that's where all the cougars are. That's the mean when they say keep Louisville weirdness that place there you go, right there, you go. That's right. All right, We've got one more Derby profile for you guys before we
get to the top of the hour. Who do we have up next? This one is Mystic Dan. Let's hear it now, look at the Kentucky Derby field one by one Mystic Dan. Southwest Stak's winner Mysstick Dan finished third in his last race in the Arkansas Derby, but that hasn't dampened the feelings of trainer Kenny McPeak that the Bay Sun of Golden Since can win the Kentucky
Derby. He's an old soul asrs. I mean, he goes out there and he's very quiet, unassuming, you wouldn't really think a whole lot, but he is really fast and he's exceptionally smart, that's what you mean. Miss dick Dan owned by Lance Gazaway four gy Racing and Daniel Hamby. He'll
be ridden by Brian Hernandez. Miss Dick Dan started his career with a second place finish at Keenland, broke his maiden in November at Churchill Downs, then finished fifth two straight races, an optional claiming race and the Smarty Jones on New Year's Day at Oakland Park. Up next it was the Southwest Stakes, where jockey Brian Hernandez kept Misstic dan is zip past the rest of the field. Won the Southwest Stakes by eight links, but then finished third behind m
and Just Steele in the Arkansas Derby. Mystic Dan was up close to the lead in the first four starts of his career. Mcpete switched up the tactics a little bit and start to rate him more and he believes that Mystic Tan is a horse that can get him to the Kentucky Derby winner circle for the first time. Look, we've been around the bulls eye on this, you know, and we've had we've had some good runs and had a favorite of the Derby and you know, look at all it's got to come together.
I mean it's just not not easy, and big twenty horse field, you gotta have a lot go right, But look we've we've got a great team of horses and people and clients and you know, look, if it's our turn, it's our turnam. But isn't it ant
