It's time for Coffee and Company. Fueled by Thornton's on Sports Talk seven ninety. Holy crap, I don't know who the hell we think when we are general off our show. Idiot, the kids are crying or turn at their countries are screwing it up. Gold Play Inner Murals, Brother, gold Play inter Murals. They're supposed to be mature adults, but they're really not. Who's the kid here? Who's the kid here? Are you kidding me? Now? Here's Nick Coffee. All right, ladies and gentlemen, let's do

this. Welcome in Happy Derby Week. Everybody a Monday edition. Here Coffee and Company. Fueled by Thornton's on at Sports Talk seven ninety. My name is Nick Coffee. The company man. Mister John Dawldon alongside said hey John, Happy Derby Week. Happy Derby Week to you. Are you feeling any Derby vibes? You can be honest. You don't have to just say yeah

because you feel like maybe that That's what I'm asking you to say. But you know so, I mean, I like the Derby, I like what it does for the city of Louisville, but I think being around it my entire life, I feel like the vibes for me surrounding Derby may not be as as exciting as some people's. Yeah, I'm look, I'm the same way. I love everything that comes with Derby around here, and I've talked about it recently, you know, as we were getting closer and closer to

Derby Week and now we're here. But you know, I I stopped years ago trying to, you know, figure out if I needed to really learn a lot about the sport of horse racing. And I'll be honest with you, me not having any interest in it made it to where I really didn't dedicate any time to learning because it's just not my thing. And I'm not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or if people think it's, you know, one of the dumbest things I've ever said. Stick around. We got

three hours. I'm gonna say a lot of dumb things today, I'm sure, but I think, you know, for my I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, Barren raised my whole life, and obviously, as a young kid, you realize how big of a deal it is that we have the Kentucky Derby here in Churchill Downs and and that's always been great. But like the sport of horse racing, right, like the actual sport of it, take away the event that is, you know, one of the biggest events

in sports across the planet every year. You know, I just it's never It's not something I feel like I was exposed to a lot. Wasn't around it right to me. So for me as a kid, I was, you know, going to derby parties and occasionally we would go to the track, whether it be a field trip or I remember the yearly tradition for us to go to Churchill Downs was we would go on Father's Day. And then as I got older, you know, I kind of became an adult and

did my own thing. I wasn't just going with my parents, you know, I would occasionally go for night racing that kind of stuff. And then obviously now in my career I work derby and whatnot. But thankfully it's not about it. You know, they don't task me with interviewing any trainers or jockeys or anything like that, just because you know it's I wouldn't be good at it. I mean I could, I mean I could probably get through it, and I would prepare to make sure I don't completely bomb and make

a fool of mine. But it's just, you know, I love Derby, but I would be a fake and a phony if I told you that I really love horse racing. I don't hate it, but like it's just not something that I'm all that interested in. So if I if I dedicated this week to like acting like I know anything about horse racing or really acting

like I care a whole lot, I'd be a fraud. So for years I've been pretty consistent about how you know, on my show, rather it be this one that you know has now been This is our second Derby together John, but previously, you know I was on middays, I was on mornings. I mean I've been with this station on three different day parts for eight years now, so this is not my first rodeo. But what I like to do is mix in some things that maybe you know of interest to

folks. But again it's not actually breaking down the sport and really the race. I mean, we'll talk about some of the horses throughout the week, but one thing we've done for years now, we're gonna do it this week too. We're gonna lean on the one and the only mister Jody Dimmling because

he is somebody that knows a lot about the sport's spurt. In fact, you know, not only do you guys see Jody's work year round at Cardinalthorty dot com, but he also has done stuff for CBS Sports covering horse racing. I mean, I think one of the local news stations here in town they hire him every year to be a part of their coverage because it's what he does, it's his lane, and because he no longer works for us

anymore. I mean, he used to have every job I think in broadcasting in this city, but now he's only he's really a contract employee for us during Derby, So he does a profile of each Derby horse throughout the you know, throughout the week, and we'll play a handful of those each day to get you set and you'll learn. I mean, I think they're perfect. And I'm not just saying that because you know, I'm gassing up my

man, Jody di Demmling. But if you're somebody like myself that wants to know a little bit of information before you were to maybe pick a horse, I mean it's perfect because it's not like you know, it's not as if it's a twenty minute interview with the owner and trainer, which maybe you guys are into that kind of thing, and if so, that's cool, no judgment, that's just not me. But they're about two minutes long and it just gives you what you need to know, how the horse maybe got his

name, the history of the owner, trainer, that kind of stuff. So we will mix those in and then, you know, some other things I like to do each time we get to Derby week on the show, take a look at the Barnstable Brown Party that happens every year. There's a lot of Derby parties, by the way, I think each year there seems to be more and more, and they seem to have some celebrities. But the big one is the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala, and we now have

the list of celebrities and attendance. I like to run through that list, and it's actually fun with John because there are some people on here that neither of us are gonna know, and we're gonna have to, you know, take a guess and then google and figure out who it is. And there'll be some people that I don't know, maybe John does, and then I'm quite sure, there's gonna be some that I know that John doesn't know,

just because he's a little bit younger than me. So you know, that's that's your Derby fix that you're gonna get from us here, unless John decides he, you know, just become the horse racing correspondent for Coffee and Company. And I feel like if he wanted to do that, he probably would have let me know before today. Is that safe to say? Absolutely?

Maybe Moose can be it though, and he's still into horse racing, man, he is in love with it. I'm taking him tomorrow morning to the backside and you know he'll get a chance to see what everybody else can see. But you know, for him it'll be like being in heaven. And I don't know where he got it from, don't I can't really explain it.

And it's not become an issue for me yet, but at some point I may have to get a little bit more educated on the sport because my three year old son is not just like a fan like thinks it's cool that I mean, he is obsessed with horse racing. We went to Churchill Downs on Saturday for opening Night, and I have some thoughts about the the updates there at Churchill Downs. I'm not teasing that as if I'm gonna need I'm gonna need some more time so I can really you know, be critical.

I mean, obviously, yes, things are very expensive. It's Derby Week, there's no surprise. But I just think there's something that Churchill Down's clearly learned through the pandemic, and I do believe it has really changed their approach for who they're catering to, what their goal is when they open up their doors, not just Derby Week, but really you know, three sixty five.

And does it make it a little bit less enjoyable for locals who have always, I guess, had their day each year, had their you know, things they like about the track. Yeah, it's probably not as convenient for them. But if I was Churchill I'd probably do the same thing too. So again we can get to that later on. But yes, my

son he's obsessed. You know, I'm sure a lot of you parents out there that have toddlers, you know, it's probably not good for our kids, but tablets, right, you know, if they won't shut the hell up, give them a tablet a kid, But you know what I mean, And it keeps them busy. And sometimes honestly, there's like educational stuff too, so it's not just you know, to to watch whatever and rock

their brain with this screen in front of their face. But if my son has his iPad when he's laying down to go to bed, or he's got it in the car, and when I'm driving, he's watching old horse races, like you know, he YouTube. Thankfully, they they've got you know, you can they if you're if you watch two of something, obviously it's just gonna rep it's gonna automatically play something next that is something similar, right,

And like there's countless amounts of horse races from years we're talking, you know, Derby, you know, any other, any other race. But there's one race in particular, I think it might be like the nineteen ninety nine Preakness, and he watches it probably thirty times a day. He's obsessed with it. So we get to the track this is when we went last year, and we're walking in and he's excited, and I mean at that time he's two, and you know, he says, Daddy, is this

the Prignas? And I said, nobody, that's that's a different one. And there was a you know, not a group, but you know, three or four guys ahead of us did look like they were into horse racing, right, looked like they were, you know, it was kind of their thing. And they turned around and they were very taken aback by the fact that a two year old, like what did he do? Say? He said, yeah, he said the Preakness. He's a big horse racing

fan. How does he know what the pregnance is? And I was like, if I could even say anything, Moose is yelling at him, telling

him that he watches it and I don't. I can't remember the name of the winner, but you know, he'd rattle that off too, so eventually, like, you know, if it's something he's really passionate about when he gets older, and I'm you know, still somebody that knows nothing that I'm gonna probably, you know, because I don't want that'll be the ultimate fomo fear of missing out on something that I could really enjoy with my son.

So again, Happy Derby Week everybody. Hopefully you guys had yourselves a good weekend. We have a lot to react to. We always say that on Mondays and it's always true on Mondays, but today it's really true, because I mean, where do we start. The NFL draft concluded pretty pretty uneventful draft, I would say, I mean just my opinion. I mean, I didn't feel like there was any really crazy stories in the Shenanigan's but we can certainly react to where the local guys went, and there's a lot of

other things. But I guess we just dive right in here because Jaden Quainton's has made his decision. For those of you that have not been keeping up with the lake atest, I think it was at about noon today. It was broke by Adrian Wolje Narowski. The I mean, he's he's Woch,

He's mister NBA newsbreaker. But then every now and then he's one of those guys that will just break some news, some exclusive scoop that he's got that really pertains to nothing involved in his lane, but he just wants to flex and like you go, Yues, I think I only break NBA free agency news. Now. He had the Dusty Main news, didn't he in Michigan. Yeah, So what I've learned, John, is that Dusty May and some of these some of these players even like high school players that are being

recruited or transfers. Woj has the same agents as as Okay, so there's a big time agency. I believe it's C double A and you know they all kind of work together. So you know, if they're going to give out some scoop to break, they're gonna give it to their main woach. But I remember that, Yeah, it was Woj who actually and believe it or not, the one person that gives me any info, especially during that

time when Louis was going through the coaching search. You know, I don't have many people, but I had one, you know, one person that was giving me good info. Really at that point, like as soon as things had kind of as soon as it was quite clear they were going all in on Dusty May, and people were talking that like they may not know, but Dusty May he's not told him no, but he doesn't want the

job. That person who's you know, been good to me. There could they their direct connection as WOJ, which I don't even know how the hell they would know each other, don't know it, but hey, that's a pretty good get, right If you can reach out to Woj, i'd say you're you're doing something special. So anyways, he broke the news that Jadan Quaintans has decided to go to Arizona State following a recent visit. And look, let's just let's just get this out of the way, because this is

how it's done. When you go after recruit and you don't get him, you take the l Louisville wanted Jadan Quaintance in a major way. They had a very generous nil situation for him. I think he genuinely liked his visit. I think he genuinely liked Coach Kelsey. And when I say he, I gotta be honest with you, I'm not really talking about the kid he

might have. But this was this recruitment was entirely done by people that are advising him, you know, his father, I mean, and his father should be somebody that advises his sixteen year old son, right, But I mean, this was all about an arrangement. Like I don't even think he decided where he was going to visit. I can't prove that, but there were a couple of quotes from him, specifically that I've referenced during his recruitment, and I remember we talked about it, John, like he didn't really

know where he was going next. When they were asking about his visits because he's not the one arranging it. It's probably his father, his agent, And a part of me says, that's kind of sad, but it really isn't nowadays you know this Look, this is all transactional. This is now a business to where if it was me, you know, I would want somebody advising me if I was that young. I mean, I would want to have influence. I would want to be able to say, hey,

I really like this coach, I really like this style of offense. But you know, you know, you should have people that you can trust by your side that are helping you through that. And I would assume this young man's father is trustworthy and at least, you know, cares about his son. Now the other people, you know, I don't know. Hopefully your agent is somebody that you can rely on and trust and they're looking out for

you, not just looking out for ways to fill their pockets. Which there's actually a really good example of that that we're going to get to coming up

before too long. And that is the latest on Penny Boone. But back to Jaden Quaint's he goes to Arizona State and it came out last week when he was considering Memphis and then Memphis visit got canceled, if you remember, And in the interview with the Memphis Commercial Appeal his father Hamon Quaintance, this was his quote, we're looking for a situation where we can go in and start. It's not a lot of coaches that can get the best out of

these young players. Penny has had young players. He probably had one of the youngest teams in the country a couple of years ago. There's not a lot of guys that feel comfortable playing younger players. Let's see. He let me find the rest of it. Yeah, and he goes on to say, you know, there's not a lot of guys to feel comfortable playing young players and developing young players. So that really is a nothing burger, right as far as like, that's not really an update in his recruitment and he's

talking about Penny Hardway, which who cares. But the beginning of that was this, they were looking for a place where they can go in and get a guaranteed starter spot. And that happens like that's I mean, Kentucky fans may acknowledge this now and maybe they did, and just you know, you never heard from him. But there were certainly some guys that played for John Cali Perry as freshmen that you know there was a guarantee they would start,

because if there wasn't, there's no reason they'd still be starting. Who's the kid that went pro for them this past year? John the freshman? It was the guy who never played a minute? Is all you're talking about those a couple years? Yeah, yeah, No, Justin Edwards is that his name? Yeah, Justin Edwards. I mean, I'm just gonna use him

him as an example. I absolutely believe that Justin Edwards was given a guarantee that he would start because he was maybe the tenth best player on that team at best, and he started I think every game but like two, and it's got to be because there was some level arrangement, you know, and

we'll never know. I mean, some say Cow didn't start Dillingham and Shepherd because you know, he was just stubborn and wanted to be able to tell you that they didn't have to start, and if he could win, he'd be able to stick in your face and say, see I told you. And you know when Reed Shepherd getting Dillingham become top ten picks, he can claim now those guys didn't even start for me, I mean, I don't think you do that now considering that season is now viewed as like damn,

how did you waste all that talent? But nonetheless like it also wouldn't shock me if those two guys didn't start, because there's some kind of an arrangement so that happens. But if pack Yels didn't feel comfortable doing that, totally get it. If he would have done it, I would not have been super critical because I mean, I think you can actually put it this way.

I think that the days of just kind of saying whatever casually to butter up a kid and really sell them, you can't really do that anymore because you know, there's clearly factors in place that lead to these kids making said decision. Right, So, part of the pitch that I'm assuming Arizona State gave Jayden Quaint's was that he would be a starter, And of course, you know he's gonna have a lot of money, so it's a bumber. You know, Louisville wanted him, they didn't get him. Had they told

him he'd be a starter, would he have been here? Maybe we'll never know, but I think, if you're Pat Kelsey, you've got a group of hungry veterans, to be honest with you, right, I mean a lot of these dudes that Pat Kelsey has brought in have played a lot of basketball, and you have some dudes that have been I mean five year guys, six year guy. I mean, I feel like one of them is

a six year guy. Could be wrong, but either way, a lot of these guys have played four years of college basketball, are three years and jaydan Quay's gonna be sixteen years old when he arrives on campus. So I just I think you've got to you know, and everybody's everybody's learning about each other, right. All these guys are new to each other. The players

probably haven't even met. But the majority of these guys that Pat Kelsey brought into visit sold them on Louisville, sold them on himself to get them to commit here. That was probably the first time that they ever talked, right. I mean maybe he recruited him previously, I don't know, like when

he was at Charleston. So I just feel like, you know, this may sound corny to some, but you heard I mean you heard it said last week when we had Terrence Edwards Junior on the show, like everybody's going to work to get everything that they that they that they get, like nobody's getting any I mean nil. Again, Pat Kelsey's not the one telling you

what you're gonna make. Obviously that's through nil. And that's something that you know, even though it sounds funny, it's not because you're a basketball player. It's because of other reasons. But what I'm saying is that I think selling some of these guys that you've been able to land that like, you know, we're gonna have to be a bunch of dogs. Everybody's gonna have

to you know, eat what they kill, that kind of stuff. And again you could say it's corny, I think that actually is how you could really attract some of the guys that have that have decided to come here. And if there's if it's clear that a sixteen year old kids being brought in and you know, he's guaranteed a starting spot and he may not be able to play at all, which I'm not saying he he wouldn't be able to play, it may get you off to a rough start. Right. Your

locker room culture environment is super important. Louisville learned that in a major way the last few years. So you know, I don't think it was a

decision well, hey, we didn't want and we didn't need him. But if it really came down to can you guarantee that he's going to start him, like well you put it in writing or something, then I think he probably made a wise decision because now you know, I still think the splash of getting Quaintance would have been huge, and I think he would have helped you, Like, I think he's a good enough player to wear even though he's sixteen. You fit him with a bunch of veterans, you could win

with that. But now you know, they still have a lot of money they were going to give to him they can use elsewhere, and they're still really good players available in the portal. So the Jade and Quaintans sweep steaks has come to an end. He's going to be an Arizona Arizona State Sun Devil, and next year they're going to be in the Big twelve. So you know, he's gonna be playing in a really good league and he didn't have to worry about getting lost in the Pac twelve network, which of course

no longer exists because the pack Pac twelve doesn't exist anymore. So another thing that I you know, I don't. I think I'm more convinc instant others that this was a factor in his decision. I mean, at the end of the day, I'm sure it came down to money and making sure you were going to get a starting spot. But Dandy Hurley, I'm not Danny Bobby Hurley. I'm sorry, Bobby. I get the Hurley's mixed up.

Danny Hurley is the super successful and Bobby Hurley not so much. But Bobby Hurley is I guess for the last year or so, he has linked with some Hollywood producers and they've been pitching an exclusive docuseriies to streaming networks on Hurley and his Arizona State basketball program. And as someone who you know, saw that firsthand and what he can do for people the market, you can't buy

that marketing. You can't buy those eyeballs. I mean, if the show's successful and it's on Netflix, there'll be people that would never tune in to ever watch a single second of college basketball Airzona State. But if the show's characters are compelling and it's got like last chance you vibes wrestlers like the show that was you know that, I mean I was, I was in it, you know, you the man, Yeah, I mean clearly had had a had such a big role. I was seen six times and I think

four episodes in Big Cheeseburger Go. Yeah. It wasn't even wasn't even you know, important enough to get subtitles when I talked, you know, just in just background noise. I think that's what they listed me on IMDb, just background noise of wrestlers. But anyways, you know that's huge for marketing, you know. So that may sound silly, but I'm telling you that kind of stuff matters because that could open him up to a new audience that

would never tune in to watch him because they don't care. And by the way, it sounds silly to do a docuseries and put it on streaming network about the brother that's not successful, right, I mean, I mean Bobby Hurley. Uh, I mean, I don't know, I'm not sure. I mean, obviously, when I think of Bobby Hurley, I think of his playing days back when he was a duke. Of course I was very

young when he played it. I mean, in fact, you know that was when I was a baby, but I remember, you know, I remember he was one of the original dookies, right, one of the guys you just kind of loved to hate. But as a head coach, you know, he's been very good at all. He's never won a tournament game. He's only been to the tournament three times in his what looks to be nine years at Arizona State. But I'll tell you this. Their location,

Tempe, Arizona. I mean, that's believed to be the hardest campus to attend as a young man on a visit. And I'm not even talking about an athlete. I'm talking like just you know, let's say you just make your way over to the Arizona State campus. You're gonna want to go there because of you know, the what you see beautiful place in a variety of

ways, but also these kind of shows. It's not I mean, like no offense to to Danny Hurley, but like he you know, I think he's interesting enough, but like I don't think he's like a big character. His brother Bobby is a character, and that matters more for television way like Danny Hurley. It would be cool for me because I'm a college basketball junkie, so like to see the behind the scenes stuff of Yukon and to see him in practice, Like I would eat that up. But that's because I

love college basketball. Danny Hurley, I'm sorry, Bobby Hurley is somebody that I mean like he's he's more of a character. So Jade Quainton's off the board. He's going to arizon A State. So uh, we'll talk about some other names to keep an eye on. Obviously, Louisville has a visit scheduled with O Sibor, and who knows, maybe he doesn't even end up here because he might commit to Kentucky while he's visiting. But we shall see. That would be a big addition. And now Lousvill's got more money to

give him because they didn't give any to Jade Quaintons. So keep it locked right here what I want to do. On the other side, we'll take a look at this Penny Boon situation. Doesn't look good for that young man and Kentucky. Since we wrapped up the show Friday, I believe they added two more players, so slowly but surely. Mark Stoops's roster is is, you know, getting put together all right? If you want to join us on the show, you can five O two, five to seven and one

seventy nine hundred. That is the number if you wanna give us a call text line five o't two six five three zero seven ninety one. And then Federal Credit Union text line keep it locked right here on Sports Talk seven ninety all right, So in total, it looks like there were four. Yeah, I thought there may have been five, but four former Louisville Cardinals heard their name called this weekend in the draft. First was Haisa Grindo going in

the fourth round to the San Francisco forty nine ers. Jarvis Brownlee in the fifth round, which I think he slipped a little bit further than what a lot of people were projecting, but he's with the Titans at the number one forty six overall pick. And then Jamari Thrash in the fifth round as well, going to the Cleveland Browns one fifty six overall, and then Juar Jordan was taken in the sixth round by the Houston Texans, which surprised me a

little bit. I mean, I think Juar Jordan's going to have a chance to really show what he can do in the NFL. Kind of a unique back to where you know, he's just he's injured, and I shouldn't say he's injured a lot, but you know, he's just to me, he doesn't necessarily look exactly like a guy that could be a feat you know, a guy that you really I think Grindo could be somebody that, you know,

as long as he stays healthy. And you know, sometimes running backs just kind of fall off the cliff, right, you know, they they could productivest can be for three years and then the year four they're just done. I mean, that's just kind of unfortunately, that's how it's worked for

a lot of these guys. But I think Gorendo could more so be that, be that guy, whereas Jordan, you know, I'd love to see him on special teams returning kicks, and you know, who knows, Maybe maybe I'm wrong, Maybe he does carve out a nice role there with the Texans. But I think a lot of folks as we get closer to the draft thought he may in fact be an undrafted free agent, but the Texans take him in the sixth round. So Brian Hudson signed with the Detroit Lions,

Stormed Duck with the Dolphins. Jack Plumber signed with the Panthers, col of old lineman Eric Miller signing with the Bengals, and then Willie Miller signing with the Jets. So some good representation there in the NFL draft, and and who knows, sometimes guys who don't get drafted end up making the making the roster, and I know there's there's uh, there's the belief that when you don't get drafted in the seventh round, you know, you then can

field offers and decide what makes the most sense for you. And that is an advantage when it comes to you know, knowing where you feel like you would be more competitive at, knowing where you feel like you'd have a better

chance to make that roster. But what people fail to realize is that you know, if in fact, you make the roster and they cut somebody that they drafted in the seventh round, sometimes look sometimes that that's what needs to happen, because that's I mean, the end of the day, you got to find the best players on the team, or you gotta find the best

players to put on the team. But that's also a GM admitting that they you know that they didn't they failed in the draft, Right, they're gonna like, let a guy go they picked, and then keep a guy that they I mean, it happens from time to time, but it's just something I rarely hear people mention. But yeah, let's move back on. Well, actually, let's stick with football here. By the way, it's Coffee and Company. We are feel about Thornton's here on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Thanks for hanging out with us. Happy Derby weeked everybody, but Penny Boon. That's a name we've talked about quite a bit in the last month or so just because of the departure. He decided to hit the transfer portal, you know, as soon as it opened up. And this is a guy who showed up in December into December whenever, it was, maybe early January, right, transferred following his last season there at Toledo. Was a nice

addition for Louisville. Right, one of the reasons He's not the only reason, but one of the reasons why they were viewed as a team that had put together a really good class. I think they were ranked in the top ten just about everywhere. When it comes to the transfer portal. He was a part of that. And after I think it was three practices in the spring and maybe less than three months on campus he decided to hit the portal again. And the reason, unfortunately, this is like, this is not

this is not new. I mean, I'm I should say this is not rare. There are many players across the country in college football that after spring ball they hit the portal and they were just in the portal in December. So it's not just Louisville and it's not just Penny Boone. But what made Penny Boone be discussed a little bit more than others is because of the exit. Right. I mean, he said he was standing owned business. He did did let us know that? And I assume that means he either I

mean, you could take that a lot of ways. Right, he either feels as if he shouldn't got he should have gotten more money up front. Maybe he feels like he's done enough since he's been there to where he should

be getting more money than he agreed to. I don't know, but clearly he had some some issues with the nil finances and you know, and then he posted some stuff from clips from spring practice and you know, just didn't didn't exit here with anybody feeling like the experience was mutually beneficial at all.

Right, Like Louisville wasted their time, wasted some nil money with this guy who showed up, practiced a few times, and left and then on his way out, you know, he I don't even know what the best way to describe that whole situation would be, but he took he took some shots on the way out. I suppose. Well, now it turns out that Penny Boon may have nowhere else to go other than Louisville. So this is

unfortunate, and I mean this sincerely. I don't I'm not saying that, you know, he's a victim in all this, because at the end of the day, you know your actions, your decisions, you know, you got to live with them. But a lot of people seem to think that he's just getting advice from a really bad agent. So here's what's happened.

He hit the portal. He had a visit I think scheduled as soon as he hit the portal, probably even before he was in the portal, because that's how it works, to go to Washington, Right, He's gonna go to Seattle. Well, I think the folks at Washington, on their end are doing their homework looking at this guy, probably interested in him, right, he's a good player. But then they realize, you know, there's no like, we can't do it. And I'm assuming it's because of academics.

And I don't mean that he's got like a terrible you know, transcript and he can't get into school because he's got allows e Gpa. But you have to be able to transfer in go you have to be able to transfer in attempting to obtain a degree at that school. You know that when you're all over the place, right, like he was at Louisville for a semester, right, he was here. In fact, you know, maybe he's doing his coursework now this semester online because I don't think he's actually here in

Louisville, but you know he's enrolled at UL. Well, it's not common for people to bounce all across the country and transfer schools at this rate unless you know you're in this position. You're a football player trying to make money. So there's schools he can't get into. Not again, not because he's a terrible student, because it's just it doesn't it's not compatible. I'm not sure if that's what happened at Ole Miss, but I'd believe it. So

then it turned into he was going to go to Kentucky. Right Well, now it's come out that he will not be able to go to Kentucky. Nick Roush of KSR reported this over the weekend. I believe that he won't be transferring, and that's where he mean. In fact, I think he committed essentially, But it's an academic credit hour issue. So I'm sure he could find a spot somewhere. But you know, when you're at Toledo for three years, two years, maybe you start at Maryland, then you're at

Lowell for a semester. You know you've got some kind of concoction of credit hours there, right, So how does that? You know, how does that? You probably can't take all that with you. I don't know how it works. Trust me, I'm aware of how dumb I sound even trying to mention the whole credit transfer kind of thing. But athletes are learning this as we speak. So we'll get into it later on the basketball side, because there's a lot of these kids that and there's one visiting Kentucky right now,

Kobe Brea, I believe that's his name, Kobe Brea. He's dating Sharpshooter. Well, he was down to like five of the blue bloods, right, he was considering Kansas, Duke, Yukon, Kentucky, and North Carolina, I believe. Well then he just was down to two schools, Duke and Yukon. Well he canceled his visit to Duke, and it I think it's I think it's because of the you know, he can't get into

school there. So now Kentucky's back in the mix and he's visiting as we speak, So you know, I could benefit Kentucky could really work out. But these guys hit the portal not even thinking about that, because to be fair, I don't want act as if none of these guys actually go to school and are you know, taking their education seriously. But let's be real. They clearly can you know it, probably can get away with some things

academically and have situations on the academic side that others don't have. And that's been going on forever. But what's new here is all this bouncing around from two different schools, and I think that's gonna make it to where you're gonna see these dudes be recruited. And then I don't know if it goes to the admissions office of where it ends up. But these guys could be deep into the recruitment feeling like they're about to make a decision, then find out

you can't get into school here. So I would imagine Penny Boon academically would be able to come back to Louisville and play I can get into school because he's actually still a student here. But I just have a hard time I'm seeing Jeff Brohm welcome him back in if he decided to do it, I would trust him because I would think that he would he would feel comfortable that

this, you know, wouldn't turn into a bad locker room situation. But just given the optics of everything that played out, especially now that we know that he apparently, you know, got wind of you know, some of these dudes on their way out yapping about money. And I really don't know the source of it. I've been asked about it, I've seen it.

I have no information that you know more than anybody else. But there was somebody in the Louisville locker room, like in the spring game, doing a like being videoed, like posing in their uniform doing L's down and I think that as some people thinking that like players came here just to take money and leave. And I have no clue who that even was that would do that, but I just I wouldn't imagine that Jeff Brohm would welcome this guy back

because it didn't sound like it was. I mean, it didn't sound like it was anything other than a messy situation that you know, they want they want. I think they wanted him to be on the team. They wouldn't like they were looking for him, you know, to leave because they didn't think he was good enough. They thought he was a bad guy. But you know, there's no doubt about it, Penny Boone and his agent,

if you want to call him that. To me, there's no scenario they ever thought they'd be in the situation where they don't really have any other options right now. So maybe he can go back to Toledo, I don't know, and that this will be a guy that you know, went through the whole transfer portal situation, took some money through ANIL and ended up backing the

MAC. But it is unfortunate. But I think, you know, maybe if this thing, if it ends up to where he's got no other options, and he has to go back to Toledo because Louisville won't take him back. I think it could be an example for college athletes moving forward to not trust agents who like aren't really agents. I mean, I saw somebody put this out there the other day, and I thought it was totally true.

I mean, you've got these buddies, pals, friends of these athletes that you know are just graduating with a sports management degree, and they call themselves anil agents and they're telling their clients to turn down fifty K with nothing on the table. So they're just turning that down as if they're going to get these bigger and better offers, and you know, it could ruin your career. And you know, I think some of these young you know, some

of these especially guys of Penny Boone situation right now. I don't know Penny Boone at all, but like he's he's in the MAC. It's not as if he's a guy that has been viewed as this, you know, like he probably hasn't had a real agent ever. Well now you know, probably some dude DM and M on Twitter telling me he wants to represent him, and you want to have an agent, right because you want to feel.

Hey, he talked to my agent like you're you're a big dog, right, You're important, you matter, you want to get the deal done. Talk to my agent like it's a flex right. Well, these guys don't know what the hell they're doing, and they're taking twenty percent, which is

just insane compared to what an actual agent would take. But there are many players across the country, I think, in both sports basketball football, that have probably really ruined some potentially good situations because they're listening to somebody that doesn't know what the hell they're doing. And I don't you know, I don't know Penny Boon's agent at all, but I'd say he's getting some advice and some guidance from this agent, and I think every bit of advice that he's

ran with in the last few weeks has been not good advice. So we'll see. I'd be highly shocked if he is back at Louisville. But again, if if he is, I would say that means the Jeff Brohm trust that it's, you know, a good move for the team. All right, let's take a quick break. We'll come back on the other side. Keep this thing rolling along. Take our first look at this this let's see here. Yeah, the twenty twenty four Kentucky Derby one point fifty Derby Barnstable

Brown actually butchered the name. It's the Barnstable Brown Derby Eve Gala. I think a lot of people just call it the Barnstable Party. But either way, it's a big deal and there's a lot of celebrities that have been invited and they're going to be there and we'll talk about some of those and lets you hear your first Derby Derby profile from Jody Dimlings. So stick with us

right here. It's Coffee and Company feel by Thornton's on Sports Talk seven ninety John, did you happen to see the tweet from the Louisville Bats yesterday, the one that was throwing shade at Kenny Payne? Yeah? I did see that. I mean I was surprised by that. I mean I wasn't bothered by it. In fact, you know, it was well done. I'm just curious the level of screening that gets within the organization that is the Louisville

Bats. I mean they have, you know, a marketing president and probably just a social media team and whoever thought of it, you know, shout out to him for those who missed it. The louis of Bats they tweeted this yesterday morning. The Bats won their thirteenth game of the season last night, and it had the it had admin thinking thought it was supposed to take three to four years to do so, and then the emoji with the perplexed look. That's a shot at Kenny Payne clearly, and I just didn't see

it coming, you know what I mean. Kenny Payne's catching strays from the Triple A affiliate here in Louisville. It does make you wonder who thought out the tweet for sure. It's got to be a Louisville fan, right, yes, And you know, I'm just here. I am thinking, like, you know, the brass over there, like Greg Galliett has any say so, which I would assume that he mean, he has say so, but I would assume like he wouldn't be involved in that because you know,

he's one of the higher ups. But I can I'm just imagining it getting up to like their boss, their boss's boss, and everybody kind of being like, go ahead, right, like who cares he's gone he sucked anyway? I mean, could you imagine if something like that came out while he was still the head coach, Oh, it would. I mean it's it

would have been great. But like you know, I'm not saying it should have, just saying it would have been even more should have because I mean it's it's I'm about to just have a spasm and just you know, lose you just block out, and I can't. It still doesn't seem real that that whole thing happened, that he was here for two years and was as

bad as he was, said the things he said. I mean, it was just we knew Louisville was going to be in much better shape than they had a new coach, and we also knew that, you know, doing the little things that matter a whole lot. Well, actually just make us if we ever do have that brief moment of thinking about the nightmare that was the two year Kenny Payne era, it'll just make it even more maddening and insane to think that that happened. And that's that's what just happened to me.

So yeah, shout out to the Louisville Bats. All right, before we get to the first derby horse profile that we're going to give you, throughout the week. Jody Dimmling does a great job of giving us, in my opinion, what we need to know right Like, you know, I'm sure there's more information out there, but these are about two to three minutes clips that have story, the story of the horse, each horse that's in the race here. So I've heard people tell me over the years that they've

listened to these and that's helped them make their decision. I don't know if you've won, if you've picked a horse based off something you heard and you learned during this during these profiles, but you know, good luck to you if you decide to make a wager. But let's take a look at this this guest list here. We'll start with the name Cole Hauser. You know who that is? I don't. I don't either, but I'm gonna guess he's a baseball player. But then again, baseball season's going on, so

that can't be it. You have a guess, I don't, but I see why you would think that. There used to be a U of L player named Kyle Funkhouser, which is a very similar sounding name. So now I feel like a real idiot because I know this guy I've seen him in a lot of stuff, but I would have I wouldn't have known his I

would not have known his his legal name. In fact, I would have never guessed it if you'd have told me Rip Wheeler from Yellowstone, if you'd have told me that, like his name was what, I could have guessed for hours and never known his real name. He's been in some other things too, but obviously he became like, you know, a heart throb as a Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone to show that is that still going on? I mean, I think it's over. I've not seen it, but I know

it was really popular. It was so popular for a while, and I enjoyed it, but in the later seasons I kind of felt like, all right, they're just clearly they're not really going in any direction. They're just kind of taking advantage of the fact that, you know, they've got a lot of people listening. So yeah, uh, if I saw him, i'd know exactly who it is. I'd say, that's Ripped from Yellowstone.

And he also had some other some other roles that like, he was in Too Fast, Too Furious, if you remember, which you know was now twenty something year old movie. He was in the breakup with Vince Vaughn. I remember that role that he had, so I'd say mostly he's not known for this, and he's going to be there, so Rip. And by the way, if he like is out and about in Louisville like people, I wouldn't be shocked if there's people who were in love with him, like

women, but they may not. Like, they're not going to call him cold, They're gonna call him rip, which I'm sure he gets that a lot because that's you know what he's known as. Rip. All right, let's do our first Derby horse. Here the profile and this is which one is this? John Domestic Product, Domestic Product. Let's hear it now, look at the Kentucky Derby field one by one. Domestic Product. Hall of Fame trainer Chad Brown has one of the Kentucky Derby favorites in his barn,

in the Bluegras Stakes winner Sierra Leone. But don't forget the other horse in Brown's barn. Brown likes to remind people that Tampa Bay Derby winner Domestic Product, is on the improve and has a real shot to capture the roses. He's coming off a nice wind and he's been training better than ever, and I think when everybody sees this horse training out this week, I'm gonna have a lot of questions about him because he looks good. The dark Brown Bay

son of Practical Joke. Domestic Product is trained by Brown, will be ridden by Irad Ortiz and his own by Clarevitch Stable. Domestic Product has two wins at a second place finish in five career starts. He broke his maiden in his second career start in October at Aqueduct, then finished a disappointing seventh, beaten by sixteen on a muddy track in the Remsen Steakes on December second.

Brown opted to give Domestic Product another chance, and the colt repaid him, finishing second, beating Kentucky Derby favorite Fierceness, who was third in the Holy Bull Stakes on February third at Gulfstream Park. Brown then shipped Domestic Product to Tampa Bay, where he won the Tampa Bay Derby by neck on March the ninth. That means Domestic Product will come into the Kentucky Derby on an eight week layoff. No horse has won the Derby since nineteen twenty two after more

than a seven week layoff, but that doesn't bother Brown. Brown believes he has a horse that can capture the roses. He's done super this horse. It's given an incredible impression Galfin on the track since he shipped up from South Florida. I like the fact this horse is fresh, that he hasn't had a race right on top of this one. He's a horse that needed a little bit of time to recover and that race to really move forward. And he is definitely in the picture of this race. The way he's training
