It's time for Coffee and Company, fueled by Thornton's on Sports Talk seven nine day. Holy crap, I don't know who the hell we think we are get off our show, idiots. The kids are crying or turning off. The countries are screwing it up. Gold Play Inner Murals, Brother, gold Play Inner Murals. They're supposed to be mature adults, but they're really not. Who's the kid here? Who's the kid here? Are you kidding me? Now? Here's Nick Coffee? All right, let's get it started here
on another beautiful day, Coffee and Company. We are fueled by Thornton's here on Sports Talk seven ninety Nick Coffee. That is me the company man, mister John Allen alongside today, as mentioned, a beautiful day, hot outside, but I'm not complaining. Today's one of those days where if you're gonna go out and have dinner tonight, and a lot of people try not to eat out. Well, I don't know. Maybe people eat out every night. I'm not sure, but you know we try not to do it.
I mean, we do it more than we should. But if we're gonna get dinner tonight, I need to tell my wife we need a patio, like it's a patio dinner kind of night, right, John, Absolutely, I'm already thinking that. Yeah, I mean just read my mind, just being outside cold beer, I mean, just enjoying the beautiful weather. And it is hot right now, like literally it's not uncomfortably hot, but it's
like mid eighties I think it is. It's the perfect day for like you mentioned, once it gets to six o'clock, seven o'clock, maybe even eight, that's when it's gonna be the perfect temperature to hang out outside, no doubt about it. And because we are still you know, we're in April, mid midway through April, it can be hot during the day, but one there's no humidity, like the humidity hasn't really got here yet, right, Yeah, it's about a month away, maybe maybe longer, but as
mentioned right around the time, really probably closer to seven. It's just I
mean, perfect outside. I mean it's not bad before then, but yes, a beautiful day here as we sit in dark caves for the next three hours, which you know, you know it could be worse, right, I can't complain, But today's one of those days where I'm walking from the parking garage in here to our four Street Live Studios, and I'm like, man, I wish i'd I want to be outside, but it's okay, you know, it's the sacrifices I make for, you know, for this
show. All right. Just know that if you are out and about enjoying this beautiful day, you can take us with you wherever you go. Listen live on the AHET Radio ap Listen live at seven ninety Louisville dot com. We've got a couple of guests schedule to join us today, but that doesn't mean you guys can't be a part of the show. So if you want to give us a call, five W two five seven seventy nine hundred and if you want a text in the Llen and Federal Credit Union text line is
five O two six five three zero seven ninety. So coming up at around four thirty, we'll have our weekly chat with mister Kent Spencer from WHAS eleven, and then at five thirty we're going to bring in mister Aaron Torres Fox Sports Radio. So a lot to discuss with those two gentlemen. Certainly regulars of the show, so looking forward to that. But I wanted to art
was something that you know has nothing to do with sports. Honestly, it's probably not anything you guys tuned into here, but I just wanted to share with you, and yes, we will talk about the big visitors on campus. Pat Kelsey actually spoke at an event earlier today here in Louisville, filling in for one John Calipari, who was supposed to be the speaker at the
Cost for Kids Child Abuse Prevention lunch in. So you know, anytime this guy gets in front of a crowd with a microphone and a camera, I think he does what he does well, and that's selling and just you know, he's a great speaker. I think he's a pretty good coach too. You know, will will he win games here? I believe so, But
only time will tell. But in the meantime, right in the first few weeks he's spent on the job, I feel like any chance he gets to meet and it's not just things you hear on the radio or you see on TV. I'm talking about you know, when he gets out And I mean I've had three or four people in the last few weeks reach out to me that have come across Pat. Rather it be it's some kind of like a
formal dinner with you know, business leaders, that kind of stuff. I know Mayor Greenberg met him a couple of weeks ago and spoke really highly of him. So we'll get into that. And also they're not saying it, but I do believe Kentucky fans those that are like super obsessed with recruiting and super obsessed with basketball. I mean, those that are like following this roster
situation like no other. They won't say it, but they're gonna be bothered by Cali Perry because even if he doesn't win in Arkansas, until he plays games or coaches games, I should say. I mean, he's gonna generate buzz for Arkansas and it's going to get so much attention and it's going to annoy Kentucky fans, I'm telling you, and I'm sure it already has.
So there's a lot of other things we'll get into today. But John, when you were on vacation at Disney a couple weeks ago, Austin was filling in and I think it was one of these Reddit links that I found to discuss and it was breaking down like the it was breaking down the standards that folks have when they get on an online dating app or website, and it really I mean, the reason I brought it up is because it stood out to me is if like this is crazy, like that's awful, like that
would suck to be single kind of thing. But then again, I've been out of the game so long, like you know, but they laid out this survey, laid out what people are seeing, like what the most realistic normal I guess standard there is, like if you're a dude and you're looking for somebody between the ages of twenty eight and thirty five that is not obese, meaning they can be overweight, but obese is a different level of overweight,
has a career making like at least forty thousand dollars a year, doesn't have kids, but would potentially want to have kids. To me, this is pretty I mean that to me seems like a wide wide range of people like that. I think there's a lot of people that would fall into that category. But the percentage chances of you finding someone exactly like that, it was like zero point zero percent. And I'm like, geez, so doesn't
mean that. You know, a lot of people probably don't meet somebody on a dating app, But it just really stood out to me, so Austin and I got to Chad because I believe he shared this during the during the show, and if not, I guess I'm outing him here, but he wouldn't mind. He met his current girlfriend that he's been seeing for a long time. I believe they lived together on an app. I don't know which one it was, but I just started thinking, like I wouldn't even know
what to say, like, hey, how are you like? I What would I mean? I wouldn't even know where to start. I'll say this, I'm glad that I found my wife before the dating app craze became a thing. We met on an app. I guess it was on Twitter, not a dating app. You met your wife on Twitter? That's cool kind of on Twitter, but we Twitter was a big like Twitter was like when
I was in high school. Twitter was the thing to be on, which is crazy because now a lot of people like you and even me, like Twitter and a thing when I was in high school, but becuruse that was a long long time ago. We had MySpace, but I remember, like it used to be. At one point, it wasn't just the platform for you know, the people who use it now. It was for the younger
crowd. Now there are people on Twitter that you know that are used, that probably gone on it when you did in high school, right, but like no, no, like nobody like fresh out of high school is active on Twitter. You know what I mean? I wouldn't think so. Yeah, But so you all known each other before, but like maybe connected on Twitter. We knew we had a mutual friend. That was how we kind of connected, but we did. We also followed each other on Twitter as
well. But you shot your shot on Twitter. Yes, that's where That's where the initiation happened. Nice. So anyways, just to be, you know, an idiot, a goofball, like I can be for lack of you know, maybe something you could say on the radio. I've started emailing my wife every day before the show starts, as if I'm like messaging her on a dating app, and you know, I don't think i've you know, at first she is like, you're so stupid, which is true.
But now I'm kind of like running out of like because what it always turns into is me essentially asking what we're doing for dinner. But like I'm like, hey, I'm Nick. Just wanted to say hello, you know, just super formal like brief, a very you know, generic, some form of how you're doing, I'm so and so, but today I didn't really know what to say, like, I didn't really know where to go from there. So she really appreciates it, though she doesn't know it. But
I know she's been telling people she thinks it's like romantic. Oh she does, now, Yeah, I mean I think what I think she sees here is just some effort on my end to kind of, you know, I don't know, have a little fun. Yeah, I have fun, like because as much as we you know, we have a great life together, you really get on autopilot a lot with kids and you know, our schedules
and work and that kind of stuff. But at one point I may read some of the messages I sent her just to see if, like you guys tell me like, hey, I think that's lame, Like I don't think that would have worked. Man. But is it really what you say or is it more of what you're like your picture show like it's probably that more than anything. Right, That's a good question. Or maybe how it comes
across, how whatever the words you type out come across. I just in my mind, I cannot imagine being like like sending an initial an initial message to someone that isn't just very like anything that's not super generic, like hey, how are you? I don't know. I mean again, I would suck. Yeah, if I was doing it today and I hadn't let's just say I hadn't had been in a relationship for like two or three years or something that might be a long time. But I feel like I would just
yelop. Well, what I was gonna say is I feel like, if you if you do something other than the very generic introduction just to see if you get a bite, you know what I mean. I feel like, if you do anything else and you try to be like funny or like, I don't know, like like very forward, you're gonna sound like you're gonna be a dork or you're gonna be a creep, right, yeah, And I think that's not I have this opinion. I can't prove it, and
maybe I'm way off. There's a lot of things that men dudes would not want to be known as right and there, and there's long long lists of them. But I think the one that that would be that would one that would make you feel like the worst, not as if like, you know, you wanted to ruin your life. But like, no dude would ever want a girl to think they're a creep, right especially this day and age.
Yeah, but yet, like I just feel like it would be hard not to do that if you were, you know, unless you were going to be like super boring. I guess, like you know, like like I would be. But anyways, I was also I was scrambling before the show started today because I'm like, you know what I got to I have to wait maybe till four o'clock if you'll put something together to send her away.
And again, now it's just turned into her Like once we go back and forth a little bit, then it just turns into, uh, we're having this for dinner or you want to make me after your show here for dinner like that. So anyways, we do have some updated news to start the show with. And I don't know if this was something that happened actually I guess it happened right at three o'clock as soon as we went on the
air. And that is that Dante Maddox Junior has committed to Savior. So that's one of the visitors that Louisville has had on campus here recently that has chosen another school. Good thing is you have many other visitors that'll be on campus over these next few days, including some that are here right now,
and one of those is a top ten high school senior. But he's only sixteen years old, Jaden acquaintance, and I still think there's value in having this guy if you don't get him, just because I do think you've got a new coach that really hasn't really he's not been in this situation before as far as recruiting these caliber players or at least not you know, getting him on campus for an official visit. But I doubt we hear anything. I think this guy is going to wait it out. I mean, he is
the caliber player that you will never see make a quick decision. Now. I guess if he was going to make a quick decision, he would probably be just to follow Caliperry to Kentucky because that's who he initially had committed to and signed with. So we'll see. If there's any update about the visit,
I'll be sure to let you guys know. I mean, heck, some of you guys may find the information sooner than I would, because again I know there's some that are on the Trillie Donovan discord, and obviously there's insiders that have some private information, so we shall see. And then another visitor is Ali Khalifa, the big man from BYU. Who I mean, it sounds like Louisville really wants him. I don't. I mean, I have no reason to believe that they don't really want him if they're having him
on campus for a visit. Also, he is you know, you got thirteen scholarships to fill. I mean technically now you have nine. But I mean, this is the kind of transfer that if you end up like getting him, you have to keep in mind if you're a louis A fan, Like, it's not as if you had one spot you had to go get a really good player. You got a bunch of roster spots that you need
to fill. This is a guy who I believe will be playing his fifth year of college basketball, and he was a role player at best at BYU. I wouldn't imagine he would expect to be anything different here. But I'm also not going to be you know, I'm not going to talk out of both sides of my mouth here. I mean, other than his his assist statistics one of the strangest stat lines I've ever seen from a college basketball player.
We talked about it like four points or something, three rebounds, thirty five shoots like thirty five percent from the field, and I'm just spitballing here. I don't know the actual numbers, but we've talked about it throughout the week. This guy in nineteen minutes average four and a half assistant game, I think it was, which is very impressive. But as a seven foot guy, it's two hundred and sixty pounds. All the other things on his
stat line are just head scratching. So we'll see if there's any updates on those two visitors. I will say this, I know there was a tweet from Jonathan Blue, I believe yesterday. For those who do know Jonathan Blue is he is. I mean, if you're from Louisville and you've been around Louisville for a good chunk of your life, then I'm sure you're familiar with the successful Blue family business ventures. He currently is. Blue Equity is is,
you know, is the company that he runs now. But I mean it's there's a lot of different I mean, liquor barn I think he's the initial owner of that so very successful, big time Louisville fan. I believe he was a ball boy for one of the nineteen eighty eighteen championship team. I think it was eighty six championship team. And he's very, very very rich. I mean, I don't think he'd be bothered by me saying that.
And he posted a picture yesterday with Pat Kelcey and it says I'm all in at Pat Kelsey, and I'm just gonna mean, look, we all know what this is. This is somebody you know who has the ability and has given a lot of money before the u of L that is letting everybody know he's all in on Pat Kelsey. So uh, people will connect dots, There's no doubt about that, and I'm not gonna stop them. But I'm also not going to act as if I know if it means anything.
But you know there's some that are saying, well, maybe this could be maybe maybe Jonathan Blue. Maybe he dropped the bag off to Pat Kelsey as mister Jayden Quaintance makes his trip to town. So you know what that means, John, What doesn't mean If Jonathan Blue is dropping the bag and Pat Kelsey's got the bag to I guess pursue Jayden quaintance. That means Pat Kelsey's standing on business correct that I'm not just that that's exactly what it was.
You just laid it out perfectly. So the Maddox News, I think, is going to be a little bit of a test here for Louisville fans because this is your first loss. But I mean you've already landed two guards. And by the way, they are guards, just different types of guards. Terrence Edwards junior fats He's obviously a kind of a do it all guard, more of a primary guard, if that makes sense, whereas Javon Hadley is somebody that is more of a you know, he's a six to six guard.
But honestly, he rebounds probably better than he does anything else, you know, junk buckets. I mean, he's truly a He's a do it all player in every facet, defense, rebounding, free throw, scoring. I mean, he's to me, I don't know if he has a weakness, but I'm not really sure what his true strength is. And I say that as a compliment, like he's a guy that can do a little bit
of a little bit of everything. I mean, Fats is that as well, but more so just in a guardbral right, Like he's not crashing the glass. I mean he can rebound, I would assume with his size. So maybe Maddox's decision is based off that. But some people are saying that because things soured with with Penny Boone on his way out of Louisville, who transferred from Toledo. Initially, well that's where Maddis Junior is transferring from, is Taledo. I mean, I think we're reaching to go there, but
I don't know. I mean, I think we did learn yesterday, at least I did. A lot of you probably already knew what that meant. But make no mistake about it. The since deleted Instagram story from one Penny Boone was an indication that he doesn't the lorld doesn't have money. I mean, he didn't say that, but and I'm not even saying that it's true because I mean, I think what I think happened here is that he probably thought he would get a big chunk or maybe all of his money upfront,
which is just not how it works. And nobody, anybody that would do that is an idiot to be honest with you, But I don't know the passion and crazy love that a lot of people like myself included have for these college programs that we want so badly to achieve at a high level. It may make somebody, you know, just do it. I mean, because
right now, again, the players have all the power. So maybe you know, it wouldn't shock me if it turns out to where you know, you've got one of the best players in the country and he'll commit to you, but he's got to get his money up front, so and maybe it does happen elsewhere, But it's just super foolish because again, at any point, that player could just leave and technically, like you weren't paying him to do anything as far as a basketball player or football player, you were paying
him to just exist. Which again I say it every day, it's so stupid. How how we have to you know, handle that? All right, So what do I want to get you on the other side? Some numbers I want to share with you. First of all, we'll let you hear what Pat Kelsey had to say as he filled in for John Calipari today, and I'm sure he was probably eager to do it, meaning like, oh, Yeah, give me a chance to get out in front of you know, the community of Louisville here, talk at the coz there for kids,
lunch in, and you know, own the room. Given what we saw and heard when he was introduced as the coach, it wouldn't shock me if he looks for those kind of opportunities just to kind of build his brand and build you know, more and more love for him from not only Louisville fans, but people, you know, influential people within the city of Louisville.
So we'll let you guys hear that. We also have an interesting breakdown that tells us the total revenue total revenue for all of the college athletic programs around the country. Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana all kind of finished in similar spots. But I just you know, this is where you really get a chance to see how much money these schools generate from their athletic department. And I'd say, for the most part, these numbers probably won't surprise you that
much. However, there are a few that are in like the top twenty, that I would have never guessed. But we'll get to that. I hate like teasing. We're gonna talk numbers. We're gonna have a math quiz, you know what I mean. It's not like we're gonna you know, we're not gonna be that lame. We might be lame today, but you know, not that lame. So anyway, stick with us again. We got a loaded show. It is Coffee and Company. We are feel about
Thornton's right here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Sorry for the delay there if out of Brad Paisley fan, Sorry you had to hear more of them than you typically here because I got my headphones all tangled up once again. So again, go to Refreshment Awards dot com or download the app today. All right, So, John Caliperry at Arkansas still feels kind of weird, but you're starting to see. And this was something that Louisville fans, I mean, Tuckey fans knew it from the beginning. Louisville fans had to just accept it.
Cal moves the needle, he does, and Rick Patino moved the needle as well. And you know he's a phenomenal coach in his own right. But Cal, you know, he makes big moves, right, A lot of what Caliperry has kind of build his I think I guess his brand right, because the brand of Caliperry at Kentucky was not the brand that he had at Memphis or at UMass. In fact, Cow was always known as some cheater, which I think it's for good reason, given the fact that you know
he had two final fours vacated. But you know, either way, like you know, he he rebranded at Kentucky and that time then Louisville got in some trouble for some nonsense. But nonetheless a lot of Cow's brand that he's still I guess carrying with him to Arkansas. It's all sizzle and flash. There's been some substance, but that substance has been lacking in recent years, and that's why he wins the off season every single year because flash substance and
he's a big name making big moves. That's what he does, and that's how he has the ability to again lose to a fifteen seed or lose to a fourteen seed. And in the off season he'll start reeling in big recruits, he'll start talking his talk, and when there's no actual data to assess in regards to wins and losses, seeds, that kind of stuff, it's just him being this big figure that people just seem to believe and think is
great, meaning, you know, like his fan base. Well, now Arkansas fans are doing it, and I'm just curious if this is going to Like I'm sure there's some Kentucky fans who claim, well, I don't give a damn what he doesn't care if I ever hear his name again, and maybe some of you mean that. But it's still gonna be weird, right, It's still gonna be weird because for fourteen years, it was your guy making these moves with all this flash and sizzle, and now it's not.
And now the guy you have is no flash, no sizl and that is not a criticism to Mark Pope. That's just the difference in what you have. And they liked the flash in sizzl Kentucky fans and most people do. Most people would, but they also wanted results to kind of go along with that, to justify the hype that these teams get every year, and it just started to kind of fade away, right, So, like nobody's at fault here, it needed to end. You know, Cal wasn't not been
going to change much. But I still believe he would have in fact won the offseason, you know what I mean, Like, I still think he would have been able to do what he does. Maybe I'm wrong, but we'll never know. But right now he's doing that at Arkansas. He hasn't landed any players yet other than Big Z who followed him, and he's going to be apparently all in on the young man from Duke Jeremy Roach that transferred.
So we'll see, you know, that could be I mean, if it comes down to Jeremy Roach picking in between Kentucky or Arkansas, and he picks Arkansas, that'll be the first time you see at least a notable number of their fans, maybe not insulting Mark Pope or saying that they hired a bum but kind of voicing that they're a little worried or maybe they're big worried. You think that's fair, John, Yeah, like, because that just kind of shows that you don't have the power that you once had because Cow's
not with you anymore. I'd make a friendly wager with a Kentucky fan. I mean it's got to be something like, you know that that I would be able to fulfill if I lost said wager and dinner. Yeah, and no, I want to I want even more creative than that. Okay, but like, if there's a Kentucky fan that wants to make a wager, you know, you tell me what I would have to do if I lose.
And again, let's be like, you know, realistic here, and you know you hold I'd hold you to something too, I mean you could be you know, and actually you don't even have to be part of it. It can just be a me thing unless you want to, you know, maybe put yourself through something that you wouldn't want to do because you may lose this wager. I don't think there's a chance in hell that Mark Pope would get Jeremy roach over Cali Perry. I don't and I don't think Kentucky
fans do either. They may not say it, but like that's just like that, think about it, say it out loud. Mark Pope beats out John Calipari for one of the top guards in the transfer portal. I mean, it could happen, but like it would have to just be money, right, yeah, because it wouldn't be it wouldn't be the school. Because we've talked about that that doesn't have the pull that it had fifteen, twenty years ago and all not that. I mean, Kentucky is Kentucky. We
always have to acknowledge that. Yeah, but the players these days, that doesn't resonate with them the way that, especially now in this era of nil, the money talks more than anything, and that's a bigger deal. That's a bigger factor in that than the you know, the age of them not
knowing when Kentucky was great, you know what I mean? Yeah, and they had been to a Final four in nine years, which you know that's a long time, right, especially for them, but nine years ago kids that are in college right now, you know, we're eleven if you're twenty years old, so you know, I'm sure they remember it. Maybe, But I just also think Cow will negatively recruit against Pope and Kentucky. You know he will, He's that's Cal. I don't think Pope would do that.
And I'm not even being critical of him for not doing that, but like he's not going to be throat like cow Well because Cal wants to stick it to Kentucky in a major way. I don't think Pope really cares about Cali Perry. Maybe he does, I don't know. I mean, I think some of the things he said at his press conference, I believe they were pointed towards Cal. But you know, I just can't see a scenario where Pope is, you know, in a feud with somebody. He just
seems like too nice for got to be honest with you. But if you if you want to, if somebody wants to make a wager, like say, hey, Nick, if if it comes down to Kentucky and Arkansas and Jeremy Roach picks Kentucky over Arkansas, you've gotta you know, I mean, I don't even know. I'll let you guys get creative. In fact, there may be plenty of things that, like I know, I won't and could not do. But you may throw it out there and I may say, Okay, you know, I won't do it. But that's at least
a good idea. Does that makes sense? Like we could get some entertainment from Kentucky fans wanting to potentially torture me if I lost this at this time hypothetical wager. But the reason I'll bring this up is because cal Perry is gonna have even more resources through NIL than we even knew. Right we heard about the amount of money that was going to be there from the Chicken guy, but now apparently Jerry Jones is reportedly offering double whatever the Kentucky commits were
making to get them to come to Arkansas. And obviously Jerry Jones for those who don't know, people know Jerry Jones for the Cowboys for obvious reasons. But he is a big time Arkansas razorback. I believe he's given a lot of money to Arkansas over the years. He's not been as closely tied and connected to their programs, at least that I know of. Like, I don't think there's been any kind of a riff, but like you know, I don't see him being shown at a bunch of games. But it's well
known that he is an Arkansas guy. Well, a guy like John Cali Perry leaving Kentucky to come to Arkansas. It's going to get this rich fool like Jerry Jones to say, oh, you know what, that's there's sizzle, there, there's flash. Let me be a part of it. Sign me up. I want in. Those are the kind of things that Cali Perry can do that most coaches can't. Now can he win? Can he can he get back to a Final four? I don't know that remains to
be seen. But wow, and some you know, some of the some of the responses to this, like my buddy reads who I like, he works for barstool. He's he was, He's the ultimate Caliperry fan. Like I know he went to UK, likes UK basketball. I'm pretty sure he went there whenever Cal was there and whatnot. But like he's I mean, he's trying to do the thing like he doesn't he's not mad that Cal's gone, and he's putting up blog posted Barstool Sports like every day that you know.
It's just it's I guess it's just it's like him crying it out through blog. Does that make sense? Like, just cry through it, man, get it out of your system, because you know, like it's like I think Kentucky fans as we speak are still content and absolutely all in with Pope because it's new, it's fresh. He's really reminded them of what Kentucky basketball is not Cali Perry specifically. But he's a petitor. Now, make
no m's take about it. Like he in he'll probably pick a fight when there's one not there for a player or something because that's just how he's wired. And he was your coach for fourteen years. You know what I'm saying is true. So I may read some of these responses later in the show from Kentucky fans who either are you know, like this guy who works for one of the TV stations Selects and Chris Beesmore. If what truly Donovan just posted on Discord is true, then there needs to be a change to the
NS DOUAA in the future. Now they're claiming Cal's cheating. Oh but he wasn't cheating when he was there, But he's only he's cheating out Arkansas. Well it's not really cheating, but like you think it should be cheating because you know, he has the power, which again, like the way I laid it out, I don't know if it really was the way I wanted to. But Jerry Jones isn't getting involved for Musclman because I love Muss but
muscles not Kyl. As far as the figure and the hype machine that is John Caliperry, and he's gonna buy all the players, and he's had really good pl before and they've underwhelmed. But maybe he does mix it up, like maybe some things that he was maybe some things that he refused to change and adjust to when he was in Kentucky because he was fearful that it would be him kind of proving that he was wrong because he's so stubborn. Well now he can do it at Arkansas, and you know it's just him kind
of you know, refreshing. He's not at that point. He's not proving it. It's not a stubborn thing at that point. So anyways, all right, let's hear Pat Kelcey earlier today. This was an event that John cal Perry was actually supposed to be speaking at because you know, he was the keynote speaker for this event. It's the coz Air for kids luncheon. So I don't know how it was arranged, but I love the fact that, Hey, he's gone, cal Perry's out of town. He left.
Let's see what the Louisville's coach is up to. Let's see if he can give us some time. And he did, and I expect there'll be more sound from this to play later. But this is maybe the dreaded This may be the dreaded uh video play that only comes out of one side, because if it does, then you know, I'm gonna have to do something to the file before I can play it. Let's see Coach Cow who's a friend of mine, who I know really really well. It took a while,
but all of the Cardinal fans out there, we finally achieved it. Coach Cow is finally wearing red. So what if Cal like saw that and quote tweeted it with a hey Pat, best of luck in Louisville. I mean that that would melt Big Blue nation, would it not? It really was. They would combust and Cal is so petty he would do it. I
love it. This rivalry fun again, John, It's it's it's so fun to observe from the outside because nothing has happened, and nothing will happen been From a basketball standpoint, I mean, I guess we'll see who who gets what recruits in that kind of thing. But they won't get to settle this until next December, which is a while away. So I'm excited. One thing about Pat Kelsey, I have a comparison. I don't know if you'll
agree with this or not. He is careful to talk about a man, right, Oh okay, he's starting to remind me a lot of PJ. Fleck at Minnesota. I don't know how familiar you are with him for football, By the way, he's our football coach. I don't know enough about him. Okay, he's just very charismatic. Yeah, they kind of look like a dork though, but they're both kind of dorks. I mean PJ. Fleck does the whole row of the boat thing. PJ. Fleck has no style, though. I think Pat Kelsey at least, you know,
like looks like he's a ball coach. PJ. Fleck wears a tie it game like it's nineteen forty seven. I think of the right guy. Yeah, you're fa I don't think that comparison's maybe their charisma and you know, the way they it's mainly personality based. I mean, I think Pat Kelsey has pretty good style. Some would say maybe his glasses aren't a good look, but you know what, like it makes him stand out, and you
know he could off I think. And just to be clear, like, I know there's probably some you know, BB and takeover going on in the text line right now, because I know pack Kelsey hadn't coached a game, like I'm aware, I'm not. We'll have to wait and see if either of these two guys that took over these programs can win at the level they
need to. But we won't know that for a while. So let's just get into the weeds here, have fun, keep this rivalry stuff going on, and uh, you know, it's alive again and I'm enjoying it. All right, quick break, we'll come back on the other side. If you're on hold, we'll stick stick, stick around. We'll get to you and keep this thing rolling along. It is Coffee and Company. We are feel about Thortons right here. On Sports Talk seven ninety I ended up just
sending a cheesy pickup line to my wife John. Oh yeah, yeah, I said, did the sun come out? Or did you just smile. Did you spawn yet? No, not yet. She probably won't. She'll probably be questioning why she married me, but I'm sure she does that daily. All right. It is coffee and company. You appreciate you guys hanging out with us. I believe Louisville will soon get some news of a commitment. And it's not it's not the five star freshman phenom ivers freshman to be
who, by the way, is only sixteen years old. It's not Jaden quaintance. It is Ali Khalifa, who it sounds like is is potentially gonna commit to Louisville any minute now. He's on his visit. So again, we shall see, and I will say this really quickly and we can get into it later if in fact that does end up happening. Louiell's in a rare spot. They're not recruiting three or four guys to put them over the edge, right, They're recruiting an entire team, which every team needs role
players. And given the production and the role that was there for Khalifa at Byu, I can't imagine that he would think he was going to be in line for like a huge role with thirty something minutes a game or something. So don't know if that's gonna end up being what happens, but we shall see. All right, let's go to the phone line. Five two five seventy nine hundred is the number if you guys want to give us a call. Let's go to Let's go to Jerry. Jerry, you're on Sportstock seventy
ninety. What's happening, hey, Nick? Uh? You know, I'll always give you credit. You know, you were the first one to jump out there on the ledge and say this Kenny Payne thing isn't working, you know. Yeah, so I didn't want to say I had to be honest. Hey, but here and while everybody set back and waited and waited and waited, you know, and it drove me nuts. But I always always took my hat off to you for that. Okay, But but here you go today, I've got to disagree with you with two things. Okay,
got a got one hundred percent agree with John about PJ. Fleck and Pat Kelsey. Before before Kelsey was ever really seriously mentioned, but he was, you know, mentioned vaguely. I remember telling some of my buddies, say, man, guy rides you at PJ. Fleck right, and they do. And you know what's you know what the difference is Kelsey's ours now so we so we scoffed at Fleck. But they're they're they're twins, man, I mean they're twins. You mean as far you mean as far as like
personality, looks, everything, the way they act. I it's not familiar with PJ. Flex, to be honest with you. Well he hit it. Oh yeah, so I just googled him. Yeah, if you if he walked into the room right now where I'm at, I would have not known that was PJ. Flex. I know of him. He was at Western Michigan now is at Minnesota. But yeah, they do look like I don't know what I was envisioning, but yeah, I can see it totally. Okay. And and and what did what did John say while go row
the boat? That was PJ flex thing? What was Kelsey's thing? Our city he's running with a revival on social media? But yeah he didn't. We did do our city. You're right, Okay. The other thing I gotta I gotta disagree with you one hundred percent about is you made a comment in a while ago I was driving. I'm not driving now about drove off
the road. I'm like, you gotta be kidding me. Okay, you said Pope was too nice a guy basically to get out in the dirt with Caliperry in so many words, right, yeah, I mean, I just I don't see him being as cutthroat as some other coaches. But again, I don't know. I don't know anything about Mark Pope other than what I heard when he was introduced as the coach on Sunday. Okay, well, here's my take on the whole thing. I'm sixty three, you're a howl
thirty five, okay, and I've seen it all. Okay, I work for a large corporation here in Louisville, leave it unnamed. But I'm telling you what guys would cut their mother's throat for another twenty grand a year and another promotion and a bigger office. So you don't My take on that kind of thing is always this, a guy that rises to the level of the Kentucky basketball coach would sell those four or five daughters he's got for a five star. Don't kid yourself. Okay, I think you're being naive. Well
what about that? Well, what I was saying, what I was saying is if you if you're referring to what I said earlier in the show, I don't. I can't see. I can see Cali Perry for sure discrediting Pope and probably talking bad about Kentucky. I think maybe not, maybe not because of Pope's character. What could Pope say that would make him look like a better fit and a better recruiter, better coach than than cal Perry. Like, I think he would probably be quiet because he has no ammunition.
I mean, he could probably find something. But like, if you're just going to talk about, you know, why you shouldn't go to Kentucky, shoul why you should't go to Arkansas? You should come to Kentucky, play for me. If he starts to go resume and just starts bringing up Cali Perry, he'd lose in every angle you'd look at it. That makes sense.
But here's here's what I'm saying. I'm not saying publicly he will, but but the behind closed doors would recruits let him get his teeth kicked in a couple times by Cow'll he'll he'll get down in the desperational kick in right to that level. You don't rise to that level without having some and you can you can throw out all the faith in religion and stuff that he's already
thrown on the table publicly. When he gets his like I said, when he gets his teeth kicked in a couple of times, that whole thing will change. Because again, I've watched it in the in the in the in the sector, the business sector, during my employment with the company i'm with. And let me tell you something, you get knocked down a couple of times. People do crazy things, and and they're not always what they say
they are and and and it is what it is. And I think, uh, like I said, behind closed doors, he's gonna talk trash to then recruits as much as cal is too. And you'll never convince me otherwise. Jerry, I appreciate the call. Yeah, I think you know you said something there that mentioned that reminded me. I'm sorry, that reminded me of of how he got there, right. You said you don't rise to
that job. I mean, I think any even if you're a coach at a place like b y U. B y U is different because you know, the the situation for lack of a better uh, for lack of you know, the Mormon stuff. I mean again, I just sound. I'll just deject from it. We all know b WHYU is a different school than most because of the obvious reason. But my point is this, anybody that's at a high level job that's not Kentucky Lortville, I mean like coaching division
and basketball, you're making millions of dollars. It's a high stakes business. So yeah, you're gonna get in the weeds, and you know you got to be competing. I mean, we learned Kenny didn't even try and that was crazy. But you mentioned rise to that job at the University of Kentucky. He didn't rise to that job. Mitch Barnhardt hired him. That's what happened. Kenny Paynt didn't rise to the Louisville job. Josh Hurt hired him.
Like this wasn't like climbing the ladder. Mark Pope was not going to be hired for any other job in the off season, but Kentucky opened up and Mitch Barnhardt wanted him for you know reasons that I think we all know that he's safe, and he's an easy guy to work with, and he's a lot he's everything that Caliperry is not so you know, I'm sure there's it is a cutthroat world, but I just think when it comes to I mean it if the young man that's being recruited started hearing Mark Pope, you
know, bad mouth Caliperi or his lack of ability to coach, I mean maybe a young kid would would eat it all up. But like I don't. I mean that would be like if it was me in that position, I would just talk about me and not bring up any other coach that you could you could you could in no way make a legitimate case has has done anything that It's it's a situation where there's no scenario you could you could claim
that Mark Pope is better at Caliperry than anything in coaching. And what I mean by that is just accomplishments, right, getting guys to the NBA Final Fours, all that kind of stuff, and Mark Pope may do it at Kentucky, But you know, it's it's just a wait and see situation. And I think when you've got kids that are being recruited by the best schools in the country and there's a lot of money involved everywhere, I think those those kids are more likely than not going to bypass a guy where it's a
wait and see situation. So thank you for the call, Jerry, though I appreciate it, and I think I'm trying. I'm trying to find out because when you said PJ. Fleck, I had a vision in my mind. Who that was? What you mean you described the whole suit thing he does do that. It's the face though, like I thought he had like long hair. Oh no, no, yeah, I knew they look very
similar. Yeah yeah, And I'm sorry to just dismiss that because I don't, you know, I I'm trying to think of I'm trying to figure out who the cot like, what, what face and what hair was I picturing with PJ. Fleck because it's clearly not that I can't even think of who Minnesota's coach was it was before this is again this is another example of how you know, my brain's just not it's not great. I remember PJ. Fleck was at Western Michigan. I remembered he rode the boat and went uh
and we ended up taking the Minnesota job. I remember that he wore a suit. I don't know if it's a suit, but he just wore like a like a tie. It really weird combination of clothes. Him and Al Golden, the old Miami coach, were the only two guys I can think of in my in my time as a college basketball or college football superfan that like every game they're wearing a tie, which is just uncomfortable. Honestly,
you look uncomfortable coaching, which means you're probably not coaching comfortably. But nonetheless, the face like everything about like you know from I guess tie up, I had a different visual of what that was. But anyways, we got two more hours to go in a lot to get into, so stick with us. We'll keep this thing rolling along. Coffee and Company. Feel about Thornton's right here on Sports Talk seven ninety
