Exploring Cozy German Autumn Words

Hallo und willkommen bei einer neuen Folge von Coffee Break German. Mein Name ist Thomas und heute dreht sich alles um den Herbst. Yes, the bees are getting shorter and the leaves have started changing color. Personally, I think German has the most poetic and most beautiful words to describe this season. And I want to share some of my favorite words with you today. Also, es ist Zeit für ein paar Herbstwörter.

For today's podcast, I want to keep it light and fun and just explore some autumn words. If you are looking for more in-depth German lessons, looking at either certain grammar or vocabulary topics, then head over to... coffeebreaktv.com and you will find an amazing range of videos. Aber jetzt lass uns anfangen mit unserem ersten neuen Wort. Die Kuscheldecke.

cuddle blanket. So German is known for combining multiple words into one to describe something very specific. And that's exactly what is happening here. Kuscheln means to cuddle. Und die Decke is the word for a blanket. And you would hear it in a sentence like, Oh, wenn es draußen kalt und nass ist, will ich mich mit meiner Kuscheldecke ins Bett legen.

Next up is a word that I used a lot when I was a child and that is das Kastanienmännchen. So the chestnut or as many people say here in Scotland, the conker man. These are basically just little figures that you make from chestnuts or conkers and normally toothpicks. And of course, such a thing definitely needs its own name in German. Meine Kinder.

Lieben es im Herbst, Kastanienmännchen zu bauen. So, my children love to make chestnut or conkerman in autumn. Next, a word for when the weather is a bit...

German Terms for Autumn Weather

Grimm. Das Schmuddelwetter. Think of rainy, muddy or yucky weather. The kind that makes you want to not leave the house and use your Kuscheldecke. The word schmuddel itself isn't really a word that you can use, but the adjective schmuddelig is used to describe something that is dirty or untidy, like for example a room. Okay. Das nächste Wort ist eines meiner Lieblingswörter. One of my absolute favorites. Der Blätterregen. The leaf rain. I mean...

Is there a better sounding word to describe walking through the forest while the leaves are falling all around you? Blätterregen. A perfect example of what a melodic and poetic language German truly is. Okay, noch ein sehr spezielles Wort. This one is a bit specific. But again, it just shows the Einfallsreichtum, the idea wealth that the German language can produce by combining different nouns. Take a guess what das Stoppelfeld could mean.

Any idea? Yeah, I admit it's not an easy one to guess. First we have Stoppel that can be translated as stubble, like for example the hair stubble on a chin. And then Feld just means field. So Stoppelfeld is a stubble field. And it describes the fields in autumn after the harvest when only the short stalks are left because they kind of look like stubbles.

Using 'Herbstlich' and Farewell

Now, just before we are finished for today, I just wanted to mention one super useful trick for talking about this season in German, Herbst. And that is the adjective Herbstlich. which if you translate it literally means something like autumnal. It sounds a bit strange in English, but it can be placed in front of so many nouns in German. You could for example say, eine herbstliche Stimmung.

Autumnal mood or herbstliche Farben, so the colors of autumn. Gut, ich hoffe, du bist bereit für deinen nächsten herbstlichen Spaziergang. your next autumn walk. And while you are on that walk, try if you can describe what you see using today's new words. I hope... that it will be something like Blätterregen or Stoppelfeld and not Schmuddelwetter. If you are unlucky and it is Schmuddelwetter, then just put on your North Face jacket and think like a German.

It's not a bad weather, but a bad clothes. Vielen Dank fürs Zuhören und ich hoffe, dir hat dieser kleine Einblick in die Coffee Break German Welt gefallen. Remember? If you're looking for more detailed grammar lessons, cultural insights or exercises, then just head over to coffeebreaktv.com. Ich wünsche einen schönen Herbst und hoffentlich bis bald. Happy?
