In 1979, skeletal remains were discovered along the Alaska Highway near Tok—belonging to a man no one could name. He wore a black eye patch, carried a marble prosthetic eye in his pocket, and had been dead for more than a year before anyone noticed he was gone. Police knew who killed him, but the victim himself disappeared into history, leaving behind only fragments of a life and a question that has lasted nearly fifty years.
