Hey, to over here with a quick clippings, extra. This didn't really fit in the last episode, but I'm such a sucker for stuff like this. So I'm really excited to share it with you. So when I was recording with Jake DNE, they were telling me about this scrub Jay, which is a bird that's related to blue Jays and crows. Apparently they're very smart. And Jake had been feeding it peanuts to get it kind of more used to them. Uh, it showed up right at the end of when we were record. It was really loud.

You'll hear it. Um, and so he decided to see if we could coax it to snatch a peanut from our hands while we recorded it.

Okay. So what's going on now? What do we hear? Okay, so you were just about to leave and our scrub Jay friend showed up and he, or she haven't figured out how to sex them quite yet. Uh, is squawking its face off saying, I want peanuts. I want peanuts, even though it's not eating them right now, all the are takes these peanuts and then goes and hides them somewhere else. Uh, they can cash 'em and remember up to something like 200 locations of where they cash these peanuts.

So, uh, They, they seem on impatient. So let's see if we can, we're gonna try and get one here. It coming landing in Jake's hand. Yeah, you're right. Come on microphone. Look a little weird. Ooh, just up the ante with an additional peanut two. And I keep interpreting this squawk is like, oh, I'm kind of annoyed. Yeah. Maybe I'll move the microphone back a little bit. Let's just like here. Okay. Did it even get one and knocked one? It did. It got one. Let's try it again. yeah.

You let's see if it'll oh, it's gonna go cash first. It's gotta go hide at first. So watch, this is fun too. Looking for the perfect spot. Yep. For the rat. I'm sure the rat will find it though. That's why you gotta hide a lot of em. Yeah. And then I love this. He covers it up. Yeah. Picks up the leaves. So he sticks the peanut into the, under some leaves and then he carries the leaves on top of. okay. He's a very tidy little bird and then he kinda walks away Uhhuh.

like, you didn't see anything. Exactly. I've got another one. Here you go. Come get it right here. It's so cool. It's fun. Cuz he just like, he comes right at you. Yes. And you're like, is he gonna stop raising you? How to go for my eyes? crazy. Amounts of control. Yeah. And then he just bounces so delicately right off your hand. Yeah. He don't even feel his beak. Yeah. He just gets the nut. Yeah. Such good aim.

That's and I think that's why they like the UNS shelled peanuts, because they can get grip around them. Oh yeah. Yeah. If you gave it just. right. He choking hazard ready for more? I mean, he'll do this all day. I'm sure. Probably literal. It's a pretty little thing too. Yeah. Like the little right little dip. You got a dinosaur Bob to him. Mm-hmm philosopher after type situation and it's cute cuz it is getting used to us.

So like it won't, I mean, it's not gonna hop on my finger, but it's also like, well, what do you have something for me or not? Yeah. And I've tried to just feed it directly I'm trying to figure out what can, what helps to get it like used to my presence and feeling comfortable. So it doesn't need to run away immediately. But I think the caching instinct, as soon as it's got the peanut. Yeah, it's outta here. Well, it can't. Yeah. It's like, it's gotta do something with it.

It can't put it in his pocket.
