Gavin Newsom on Trump, Climate and California

Gov. Gavin Newsom of California, a Democrat, runs a state that is in the middle of several high-stakes court battles against the Trump administration, including over its rollback of automobile emission standards and other moves.

But California has also experienced a wave of climate-driven natural disasters and rising home insurance prices. In a conversation with David Gelles, Newsom discussed the Los Angeles fires, the state’s rapidly changing climate and why he calls President Trump’s recent speech to the United Nation’s General Assembly “an abomination.”
