Episode description

Welcome to this chilling chapter of The Turn of the Screw, where the tension grows, and the line between reality and imagination becomes disturbingly blurred. As our protagonist comes face to face with the ghostly Miss Jessel once more, her struggle to disentangle the truth and keep her charges safe becomes increasingly desperate. In this episode, we witness the unravelling of our narrator's mental state as she confronts the sinister presence lurking in the story, and the haunting realization that she may have lost Flora to the malevolent spirits.

Finally Miss Jessel is present and the governess has a witness. Despite the governess' insistence, Mrs. Grose claims not to see anything, leading to a devastating divide between the two women.

The governess simultaneously feels victorious but fears for Flora's reaction, who seems to have taken on an extraordinarily adult countenance, accusing the governess of cruelty. Flora crumbles at the revelation and begs Mrs. Grose to take her away from the governess, who is left desolate and defeated.

As the day comes to a close, the governess spends time with Miles, their silence and proximity seeming to suggest that he too is aware of the situation. As the governess contemplates the future with her remaining charge, the night is filled with a sweet sadness, tinged with misgivings and uncertainty.
