The Time Machine - Chapter 12 - In the Darkness

After a long journey, the Time Traveller finds himself in a dark forest, with a small load of firewood and his companion, Weena. Suddenly, he is surrounded by Morlocks which threaten them both. In a desperate attempt to escape, he lights the firewood, watching as the blaze spreads and drives the Morlocks away. But his success is short-lived, as the fire quickly engulfs the forest and the protagonist realises he is lost and Weena is gone.
 
In a moment of panic, he discovers a hillock in the middle of the burning wood, and finds a group of helpless Morlocks, dazzled by the light and heat. He is able to make his escape and eventually finds his way to the White Sphinx, but not before discovering the tragic fate of Weena. Amidst the chaos, he discovers a few loose matches in his pocket, giving him a glimmer of hope.
