A Room With A View - Chapter 10 - Cecil as a Hurmourist

In this chapter we find Lucy grappling with society and her own emotions. Her recent return from Italy has opened her eyes to a world beyond the confines of her sheltered life in England. She begins to question the values and ideals of her social circle, realizing that there are no barriers too high for her to overcome. Meanwhile, her fiancé, Cecil, also transformed by Italy, becomes increasingly irritated with the narrow-mindedness of their local society.

Amidst a lively game of bumble-puppy with her family and Mr. Beebe, the local clergyman, Lucy learns that Cecil has found tenants for the nearby Cissie Villa. To her dismay, she discovers that the new tenants, the Emersons, are friends of Cecil's. This revelation leaves her feeling betrayed and upset, as she had previously gone through great lengths to secure the villa for the Miss Alans.

Mr. Beebe, ever the supportive friend, tries to divert the conversation to protect Lucy's feelings. However, Lucy remains agitated by Cecil's actions, and in the back of her mind she is worried about that the Emersons moving to her neighbourhood are in fact the Emersons from her episode in Italy.
