Episode description

In 1872, the hymn by which Hawks is most widely known, "I Need Thee Every Hour", was written. It is said to have been translated into more foreign languages than any other modern hymn at the time of her death.[2] Hawks stated:— "For myself, the hymn was prophetic rather than expressive of my own experiences, for it was wafted out to the world on the wings of love and joy, instead of under the stress of personal sorrow."

Lyrics:

1 I need thee every hour,

most gracious Lord;

no tender voice like thine

can peace afford.

Refrain:

I need thee, O I need thee;

every hour I need thee!

O bless me now, my Savior,

I come to thee.

2 I need thee every hour,

stay thou near by;

temptations lose their power

when thou art nigh. [Refrain]

3 I need thee every hour,

in joy or pain;

come quickly, and abide,

or life is vain. [Refrain]

4 I need thee every hour;

teach me thy will,

and thy rich promises

in me fulfill. [Refrain]
