In December 2023, the world watched as COP28, the annual UN climate change conference, signalled the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. In the dying moments of negotiations, consensus was reached to transition away from dirty energy to keep the goal of halving emissions by 2030 alive. 150 heads of state and unbelievably over 2,400 fossil fuel lobbyists were among the 85,000 participants that descended upon Dubai.
They were part of the first ever global stocktake on the progress national governments and industries have and have not made towards the promised climate targets of the 2016 Paris Agreement.
