This past December, COP28 signalled the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. 150 heads of state came to the consensus that in order to halve emissions by 2030 - the target that scientists have warned us be must adhere to in order to avoid climate catastrophe - we must transition away from dirty energy. This is a monumental moment for our planet…and cities are going to be leading the way as we execute on these actions.

Cities 1. 5, leading global change through local climate action. In December 2023, the world watched as COP28, the annual UN climate change conference, signalled the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel era. In the dying moments of negotiations, consensus was reached to transition away from dirty energy to keep the goal of halving emissions by 2030 alive. 150 heads of state and unbelievably over 2,400 fossil fuel lobbyists were among the 85,000 participants that descended upon Dubai.

They were part of the first ever global stocktake on the progress national governments and industries have and have not made towards the promised climate targets of the 2016 Paris Agreement.

The result is this

we know the world is not on track to limit global heating to 1. 5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. The window for meaningful change is closing, and the time to act is now. In this season of Cities 1. 5, we're focusing on how urban leaders are driving climate action locally, with global impacts. Like youth climate activist Xiye Bastida.

Xiye Bastida

Optimism is our survival tool. Imagine how hard it is to care in a world that does everything to strip that ability away from you. When I show up in that way, the world that I'm building is one that is built for care, and is built for protection, and is built for knowledge sharing.

C40's own Executive Director, Mark Watts.

Mark Watts

The only way of tackling climate breakdown is through incredibly extensive global collaboration and cooperation that transcends political differences, geographic, cultural boundaries.

And Founder and CEO of Global Black Maternal Health, Agnes Agyepong.

Agnes Agyepong

Women who live in areas with high levels of air pollution are twice as likely to experience a stillbirth. How do we engage the community to make them aware, and then we can bring the community along with us.
