Anna

expert series, where we are diving deep into the events we are most excited about for the upcoming Olympics and bringing you on the journey in the lead up to

Phoebe

Hello. Hello.

Anna

And hello, listeners. So, What event will we be discussing today? the

Phoebe

we're going to be talking about the 5, 000 metre event. We're going to discuss what makes this event so exciting, tell the stories of our Aussie Olympians, who you'll be getting behind, as well as some of the other key players to watch. And we'll finish with some predictions about how our Aussies will fare.

Anna

Nice! So basically, we are giving you all the information you need to sound like an expert when it comes to the 5, 000 metres event at your school reunion.

Phoebe

reunion. What? I had to think fast. You were reading the sentence as I was typing it. Um,

Anna

alright, so a little bit of background about the event. What's it all about and why do we love it?

Phoebe

Why do we love it? Well, you know what one thing I was thinking about? You know, what differentiates. it? It's an amateur runner from an elite runner. It's where the amateur runners, when they, yeah, Yes, pace. Elite runners, when they run this distance, run 5, 000 meters. Amateur runners, when they run this distance, run 5k.

Anna

run 5, 000 metres. Ah, yeah,

Phoebe

When we do a track race, We never say we're doing

Anna

doing 5k. We

Phoebe

We say we're doing 5k. And I think when you start doing 5, 000 meters, that's when you're

Anna

Yeah, that's so true. You're never like, what are you doing on the weekend? Oh, I'm going down to the parkrun to run 5, 000

Phoebe

meters. Yeah. And we'll put it, This is in relation to your question about why we love it. This is kind of why. like, I think this distance is really relatable for amateurs. It's like the standard distance for races, fun runs, park runs, like everyone knows. And so you actually have a benchmark Like a lot of people. have a rough idea about what time they could run

Anna

run past yeah yeah yeah more so than a lot of the like shorter distances yeah yeah um also like i feel like it's a really cool event to watch because it's so tactical because they are heats and finals um and it's obviously because you're like

Phoebe

like, still

Anna

still having to run 5, 000 meters. Like it is still quite a long distance. Yeah. So,

Phoebe

Yeah. So,

Anna

it just means that, yeah, I just feel like the cat and mouse games, like in their heets, they look so odd because particularly because watching it on TV, you know, you're used to people just running so fast, but sometimes they just look like they're jogging.

Phoebe

do. They, yeah, Yeah. I agree. The mind games, even in the finals, they'll have, sometimes I'll just have laps where they're just, they're holding back and no one wants to lead. And then someone will like take

Anna

Yeah, yeah.

Phoebe

It is very exciting. Um, the other reason I'm excited about this event is I feel like we're good at it.

Anna

Yeah.

Phoebe

women are weapons. We have three really competitive runners. and I think you were saying before, historically, we've been quite strong at this event as

Anna

were saying before, historically, we've been quite strong at this event as well. That is extremely

Phoebe

exciting. So tell us about the Aussies who will be representing us in

Anna

us about the Aussies who will be representing us in Paris.

Phoebe

unbelievable.

Anna

know, I,

Phoebe

so impressive. second PB, like when does that

Anna

Yeah, especially when you're already at that level. and she's also super fast, which like, obviously they're all really fast, but she's got a really quick turn of speed. Yeah. So she often wins races. Even if they are, they do go out a little bit slower, she's able to like go with the people in the like final few laps and really ramp it up. and as we said before, that's really important in some of these races.

And so, yeah, I reckon she, uh, I honestly, I really truly believe that she, can make it to the final, which is like for an Australian is huge. Yeah.

Phoebe

Yeah, I agree. I think she's such an exciting. Runner to watch because you just know, she's just whining rubbish. she's just

Anna

waiting 200, 300

Phoebe

200, 300 to go. She just unleashes.

Anna

Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, she's also just recently in the last, few races has, run a 1500 meter PB. So she's obviously running quick.

Phoebe

that is so

Anna

So who else have we got? So

Phoebe

our next runner is Izzy Bat Doyle. Izzy is an incredible athlete. She was in discussions to qualify for the marathon and now she's qualified for the 5k. Like that is some incredible strength and speed and just diversity as an athlete. so her PB just recently again, absolutely coming into form was 1449. Unbelievably impressive.

Anna

10 second PB as well from her previous PB. Yeah. Yeah.

Phoebe

And I just feel like with Izzy, when you watch her, she's not making rash decisions, she seems so controlled, she seems so strong. I think she's going to run really strategically. And she has been putting in, so her Strava is public, I follow her, I love watching, looking at all her

Anna

follow her, I follow all her posts, I look at all her sessions. It really is, and she's just been putting

Phoebe

is, and she's just been putting in massive week after massive week. So I feel like she's gonna be in great form coming into this Olympics.

Anna

excited. and third, last but not least, we have Lauren Ryan. you'll hear a lot more about her because she is our only athlete that qualified for the 10 kilometers, male or female. But she's also our indoor 5k national record holder. So her 5k PB is 14. 57. and yeah, can't wait to watch her. Okay,

Phoebe

Let's go! Who else is important to watch coming into this 5000m? Who are you going to be keeping an eye on?

Anna

I think I, yeah, I, first off the bat is Faith Kipiagon, she is going to Paris for the 1500 and 5k double. she's just recently broken the 1500 metre record, but as we spoke about, but, she broke the 5k world record in June last year, only for it then to be broken again by the Ethiopian, um, Um, is,

Phoebe

wait,

Anna

you just say

Phoebe

We're talking about 14. 41 as an unbelievable time from Rose. 14 flat. Wait, so what's the, is that the world

Anna

the world record?

Phoebe

that might, Do you reckon they might get sub

Anna

might get sub 14? Well yeah, let's talk a little bit more about Segei

Phoebe

yeah, let's talk a little bit more about Sagai then. So, she also won the 10, 000 meter championships, World Championships last year. She's also competing in the 1500 meters. And the 10, 000 meters. Um, and in the last two years at world champs, she's won three medals across the three distances. So we know she's going to be up there. Um, and

Anna

Um, and lastly, I'll let you do the honors. Your favorite.

Phoebe

favorite. So fun. Oh my gosh. We've mentioned her in, well, we mentioned her already in the 1500. You're about to hear about her again in the 5, 000 meters, 10, 000 meters and marathon distance. She is just a freak. She's so good. so yeah, this is probably her strongest alongside the 10K. she won gold in Tokyo for this event. one thing about her is that she hasn't been racing much. she just, she just, she's just doing her own thing. She just hasn't been racing much.

Um, so people don't really know what to expect. We don't really know what kind of form she's

Anna

Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, she's raised three five K's this year. which isn't a lot for, uh, like professional track athlete and her best result was seventh place in the diamond league held in America in May.

Phoebe

we should do like specific predictions for Sophane, like where will she land? What will she run? We still don't know. Will she literally do all the events?

Anna

I think she's going to do all four.

Phoebe

do all four. Yeah. That's her thing.

Anna

It's, yeah.

Phoebe

everything. Imagine, Imagine doing. 1500 meter and 5, 000 meter like, semis, heats, finals, 10, 000 meter finals, and then racing a marathon. Insane. That's insane. That's insane.

Anna

racing

Phoebe

let's do some predictions.

Anna

So, what are your predictions? Um, yes and. Um,

Phoebe

I I have to agree. I think Rose, I mean, it would be silly not to say Rose. She's just, she's looking unbelievably good at the moment. but my addition to that prediction is I reckon she could get another Aussie record. Oh no, too hot. Too hot,

Anna

No, I think she could because they'll be racing at night. Yeah, and just the energy. Yeah, yeah, another Aussie record. Huge.

Phoebe

Yeah. Yeah. Aussie 000 metres,

Anna

that is it for the 5, 000 metres.

Phoebe

hope you

Anna

Or the 5Ks for us.

Phoebe

let us

Anna

I hope you enjoyed it and yeah, let us know who you predict is going to be on top of the

Phoebe

you next time for the 10, 000 metres.

Anna

10, 000 metres. 10Ks
