Episode description

Oh hiiii, fancy seeing you here!

One of the best parts of the Olympics is the sudden emergence of armchair experts every where you go. You can't avoid them: they're on busses, in the lift, at the water cooler. They argue over fine details of sports they'd never heard of before last week, have strong opinions on the judges scoring abilities in the latest breaking routine, and can confidently tell you who will win the most niche of events.

So - we've made this for everyone who loves running but finds athletics a bit of a black box, orrr those of you who have become such aths nuffies that you want every bit of content you can (cc @ Anna).Ā

In these quickfire episodes we'll dive into the middle/long distance track events to give YOU the info you need to sound like a total expert.

In each ep we will:

  • discuss what makes that event so exciting
  • tell the stories of the Aussie athletes you'll be getting behind
  • give you a run down of the race favourites
  • make our own predictions of how it will unfold
  • plus some bonus interviews with the athletes competing in some eps!!

Phoebe

Welcome to the Cheeky Olympic Armchair Expert Series, where we are diving deep into the events we are most excited about for the upcoming Olympics and bringing you on the journey in the lead up to Paris. Hello Phoebe!

Anna

We're kickstarting our Olympic coverage with our armchair, our cheeky armchair expert series.

Phoebe

that a word? Mouthful. It's starting to ring a

Anna

It's taken me a little bit. we're obviously so excited about the Olympics, but we want all of you to to be as well. And we thought like the reason as to why people often aren't that excited about things or don't get around them is because they don't know enough about it. So we thought this would be a really good little bridging the gap between, being into running and becoming athletics

Phoebe

But it's something we've really noticed is there's been this massive running boom, which is amazing, which is so exciting. So many people falling in love with running, but that hasn't yet translated to a love for athletics. And I think that's something that was very relatable to us because we've loved running for a long time, but only recent, like recently have really gotten interested in, the athletics and following the more elite side of it.

I think it's just it's a very inaccessible sport if you don't know who the people are, what the events are, what they mean. it's not just like on TV at normal hours that you would sit down and watch and there's not like a consistent competition.

we thought a lot about, the Matildas and how during the world cup, one of those most incredible phenomenon, which is that the whole country got behind these athletes because there was this culture of like, Everyone was in on it and anyone could talk about it. And we want to try and bring that same, connection to athletics.

Anna

Yeah. It's breaking it down. So the athletes aren't just athletes, like they're humans first. And I feel like, with a bit of an explanation about them and them almost seeming a little bit more relatable means that you like, want to

Phoebe

means that you, like, want to get behind. Yeah, so

Anna

Yeah, exactly.

Phoebe

definitely aren't J Experts.

Anna

Yeah, so we are, we're definitely armchair experts. We aren't

Phoebe

but, yeah, we

Anna

but yeah, we thought we'd give you a bit of a breakdown. We're going to chat about what makes the event so exciting. And like maybe a bit of a history around it and, why we are wanting to watch it and why we think that you guys should want to watch it

Phoebe

as well. So, we're actually only going to record episodes for the events that we're really

Anna

we're really excited about. Yeah, well, for Donna Franklin, you've delved into the stories

Phoebe

guess because we can, because we said, so yeah, we'll, we'll, we'll talk about the events that are most excited about and we'll really, delve into the stories behind the Aussie Olympians. And so you'll know. Who's going to be representing us, what is their background, what kind of form are they in, what is looking likely in terms of their performances at the Olympics.

But we'll also preview some of the other ones to watch or some of the key players who we think are like strong metal chances or who are going to put on an exciting

Anna

key players who we think are, like, strong metal chances. We've got to put on an exciting performance. We've

Phoebe

we have, interviewed Jess Hull, who is the Australian record holder for the 1500 meters and a legit medal chance for the 1500 meters, which I just don't think we've ever had. An athlete in the 1500 meters.

Anna

No, I would say she's our best middle chance for a track race. Yeah, for intra on track. Yes. Yeah.

Phoebe

and Sinead Diver, who is our, marathon record holder. So we'll make our predictions, but we also want to hear your predictions. So after each episode, we're going to jump on our Strava group and we'll post a summary of kind of our predictions or our thoughts on that event. We want you to jump on, join in the conversation.

Anna

we want to know who, uh, who's your favourite and why. Yeah. Um, and get a little bit of healthy competition within there. Cheeky

Phoebe

community. That's it! Something we need more of.

Anna

so we hope you love this series.

Phoebe

Our first cheeky Olympic armchair expert series episode, which will be on

Anna

The Marathon. Women's Marathon. No. Um, which will be on the Women's 1500. I can't do it. Uh,

Phoebe

are so, we are so happy to be back in your ears and you will hear more from us very soon.

Anna

all of us very soon. It sounds great!
