Episode description

A-gen-cy  noun: action or intervention, especially such as to produce a particular effect.

Too often the actions of real people of color making real change in their neighborhoods and lives are ignored in the media. Even worse are portrayals that people of color lack the agency to address the wrongs and find solutions that empowers residents and improves conditions. Too often these stories are told from outside, not inside, the community.

Change Agent is a podcasts series by Chicagoans trained to tell stories of their neighborhood transformations and the folks who make that happen.  Developed by Judith McCray and Maurice Bisaillon of Juneteenth Productions, Change Agents is a partnership between community organizers and emerging journalists of color who are provided the tools to produce professionally crafted episodes that highlight issues, challenges and ground level efforts for change.

Episode Narrator 2: It was very late at night because I was often the one person who translated for other people. I was called down. This man, he tried to hang himself. He still had the sheet wrapped around his neck and his face was purple and I could see the markings. And some nights I dream about it.

Episode Narrator 3: I want to [00:01:00] change the perception of Austin because it's a lot of people who's giving up on our communities. This community is going to thrive again. This community is going to be a safe haven for our kids. This community is going to be an up and coming community where people can come in our community and not worry about getting shot And patronize our stores and business come back and we can rebuild our community together

Asiaha Butler: I had a mindset shift. My initial mind was this community is horrible People are shooting outside. They shooting dice. Nobody cares about themselves. I need to leave But when I shifted my mind to be like, wait a minute You're here. You can add value here. Let's see what people are doing. How do you support them?

Then I'm meeting phenomenal people, right? And I'm meeting, I'm hearing these phenomenal narratives and I'm like, wait, these stories are not [00:02:00] told.
