Trump's China trip.

Good morning.

C

I'm Steve Kathin. With the CBS World News Roundup, a long period of quarantine is in its early stages for the Americans who were on board that cruise ship in the Atlantic that was hit with a deadly hantavirus outbreak. Here's CBS's Ian Lee.

A

Two passengers, a couple, were taken to Emory University in Atlanta after one of them started showing hontavirus symptoms. The sixteen others, including one who tested positive for hontavirus, are being monitored at the University of Yeah.

G

Each uh quarantined individual is in a private room. They do have access to uh technology, they can, you know, conduct uh you know phone conversations uh but there's no intermingling of uh any of the quarantined individuals, there's no visits uh

A

The incubation period for the Hontavirus is more than forty days, but it's unclear if the Americans in quarantine will stay at the medical center for the full duration.

C

The US and Iran remain locked in a stalemate. President Trump assessed it this way yesterday.

I

say the ceasefire is on massive life support.

C

With gas prices topping four fifty a gallon, CBS's Nancy Cortis tells us the president says he's in favor of suspending the national gas tax.

O

In a phone interview, Trump told me quote we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we'll let it phase back in.

A

I think the president is a hundred percent right.

O

Within hours, Missouri Republican Josh Hawley introduced a Senate bill that would pause the 18 cent per gallon Federal gas tax for three months. With the option to extend the pause another three months. Arizona Democratic Senator Mark Kelly introduced a similar bill a couple months ago.

H

People are having a hard time.

Driving to the right.

G

afford gas.

O

We ask drivers if they think a gas tax holiday does enough.

A

The more it decreases, the better.

P

gas is four forty five a gallon and you knock off eighteen cents, that's less than five percent. So the answer's no.

Trump's China Trip And US Politics

C

Later today, Trump leaves for a high stakes visit with China's President Xi, Asia correspondent Anna Corin.

L

It's almost nine years since Trump was last in China and a lot has changed. This country of 1.4 billion people has become a manufacturing powerhouse, as we witnessed last week, when we visited a dark factory operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, run by AI and robots. It's a very different landscape and Trump is no longer holding all the cards.

C

CBS's Nicole Skanga has more this morning on a California mayor who admitted spreading propaganda on behalf of China.

M

When Eileen Wang was campaigning to join Arcadia City Council, the US Justice Department says the now mayor was acting as an illegal agent of the People's Republic of China. Prosecutors say between 2020 and 2022, the 58-year-old and her former fiance operated a website called US News Center that looked like a legitimate outlet for the local Chinese American community.

Wang admitted she received directives through the messaging app WeChat from Chinese government officials, posting pre-written articles denying human rights abuses in China. And reporting back to her handlers on how many people viewed them. In a statement through her attorneys, Wang says she recognizes the seriousness of this charge and has agreed to accept responsibility for her past personal mistakes. She now faces up to ten years in prison.

C

There's word this morning that eBay has rejected GameStop's fifty six billion dollar takeover bid, a wild scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A man walking on Memorial Drive opened fire on cars yesterday afternoon.

Q

hit my radiator, all of my coolant all over the road. So we went and checked my buddy's car and his bullet went through the headlight, hit the battery, his car won't start.

C

Two men in other vehicles were shot and are hospitalized. A forty six year old suspect is in custody and is being treated for gunshot wounds. The US Supreme Court has set the stage for Alabama to get rid of one of two largely black congressional districts before this year's midterm election. Yesterday's ruling comes after the court last month struck down a majority black district in Louisiana as an illegal racial gerrymander. Legal analyst Thane Rosenbaum.

J

The law now seems to be that partisan map making is constitutionally permissible, but racially conscious districts are not.

C

As C B S's Cammy McCormick tells us, the High Court has extended a temporary decision it reached last week.

D

It's a three day extension of the court stay of a lower court decision that would have halted mail delivery of Miphapristone. So access to the widely used pill will remain untouched until at least Thursday, while the justices consider whether to allow restrictions on the drug to take effect. Medication abortions have accounted for nearly two thirds of all abortions in the US.

F

Things may only get worse if there's a change at the time.

E

Hardly a ringing endorsement of a prime minister widely seen to have been ineffective at best. Vicky Barker, CBS News, London.

C

Senate Republicans say they will move forward with a proposal to give the Secret Service up to one billion dollars in taxpayer money for security upgrades to President Trump's White House ballroom project.

I was told by my wife you have to act presidential, so don't use foul language. I won't, therefore normally I would have said it was a sh لا أريد أن أقول هذا
