When Sidney Sperry, of the Oklahoma Association of Electric Cooperatives, approached Steven Piltz, Meteorologist-In-Charge at the National Weather Service office in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a whole new way to judge an ice storm's intensity was born.

The Sperry-Piltz Ice Accumulation Index is an algorithm used to predict the damage potential of approaching ice storms.
