This year saw the signing of Treaty 6, covering all of southern Alberta. It was also the year that Sitting Bull and his Sioux began to settle in Canada after the Battle of Little Bighorn. Other events of the year included the establishment of the University of Manitoba, the Great Fire of Saint John and the birth of one of Canada's greatest artists, Tom Thomson.
