God has a different view of sin than we do. After chapter 1, the religious, who have a tendency to be a little snobbish, would feel superior to those condemned by their actions, but in chapter 2, Paul says we’re all guilty. We are all without excuse and without escape, yet we condemn others for their sins, the same things we are doing. The world’s favorite scripture is “Judge not lest you be judged,” but this means we shouldn’t judge with a hypocritical heart. The Jews thought God owed them beca...
Half-hearted forgiveness can result in unanticipated consequences. If there is only superficial forgiveness there often is incomplete repentance. As with David and his son Absalom, after Absalom killed his brother for violating his half-sister Tamar, David forgave Absalom but only partially, as he wouldn’t show his face. This fueled rebellion in Absalom’s heart which resulted in Absalom eventually usurping David’s power, at which time David had to flee. God’s forgiveness is completely adequate a...

Paul’s list of sins and attitudes contains the worst of the worst, and the fact that “disobedience to parents” is within this list shows where God’s heart is on the matter. In fact, it was considered so important that to disobey was worthy of death. Ephesians says to “honor your father and mother” and that this is the first commandment with a promise, “that your days may be long on the earth.” Throughout the Bible honor of parents is considered right and natural, with dishonoring a sign of the l...
The standard progression of ungodliness: We know God; we don’t worship God; we exchange God for something/someone else; and finally God gives us over to a debased mind, which is the fearful consequence of deliberate atheism. This is the clearest example of a disordered affection where a vertical worship disorder translates to a horizontal disorder and a culture of decay. We have all fallen short in these areas and into a state of degeneracy. Romans goes on to list all kinds of immoral behavior.

People have refused to glorify and thank God, even though they know Him, and have turned to their own ways, constructing idols to worship and turning their backs on Him.
God's wrath is against those who are ungodly and have suppressed the truth. God has made Himself known throughout the ages through His creation, and mankind is without excuse.

After three months, Paul and his companions sailed from Malta and eventually landed at Puteoli, where they continued their journey to Rome. Along the way, Paul sought out and was sought by other believers, and they encouraged one another. Once in Rome he was chained to a guard, but didn't let that stop him from preaching the gospel to anyone and everyone. He even sent for Jews from each of the local synagogues to preach to them. Some received him; others did not. For two years he stayed in his o...
After the ship ran aground and was destroyed in the surf, all the people escaped to shore, and learned they were on the island of Malta. The natives were extremely hospitable and built warming fires for them, as well as providing for all their needs. As the fires were built, Paul helped to gather sticks for fuel. In the process of putting them on the fire, a viper attached itself to Paul's hand and was quickly shaken off into the fire. Nothing happened to Paul and the natives thought he was a go...
Nothing comes close to the story of the virgin birth. We might tend to forget about Mary as a knee-jerk reaction to her veneration in Catholicism, but she is the mother of our Lord. The Angel Gabriel visited her and told her she’d give birth to Jesus through the Holy Spirit. She couldn’t comprehend this but Gabriel said that nothing was impossible with God. She believed and went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who was with child herself (John the Baptist). Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth b...
Guest teacher, Rick Rodgers, Pastor Rory's uncle, teaches on Joshua 5. In Joshua chapter 5, the Israelites had just crossed over to the Promised Land. The inhabitants of Jericho did not understand what was happening, but based on prior events, were afraid. Instead of an immediate assault, the Israelites circumcised their forces (a second circumcision since those of the first perished in the wilderness) as a symbolic standing with God. God removed the reproach of Israel that was upon them, the gi...
Early on, Paul knew he must go to Rome, and this was God’s way to get him there. He’s was put on a prisoner transport, but as the journey was late in the season, it faced some very strong winter storms, so much so that “all hope was lost.” An angel told Paul that while everything would be lost, there would be no loss of life. Paul told this to the crew, proving he never forgot Who he belonged to and that he had total confidence in God. It’s not a question of do we believe in Him, but do we belie...
Paul is bounced around between Felix and Festus, and like Felix, Festus finds no reason to punish Paul, but Paul wasn’t released in order to placate the Jews. As he was interrogated, Paul laid out the gospel to the authorities and Felix almost came to the point of believing. As a Roman citizen, Paul also appealed his case to Caesar. Everyone knew that those who accused Paul accused him because of Jesus. As Paul, we are all to be witnesses of what God has done for us.
Paul appears in front of the governor, Felix, who has some knowledge of "The Way" and is interested in the gospel. However, when Paul begins to tell him and his wife, Drusilla, about the way of salvation, and about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became afraid. He told Paul to leave and that he'd like to hear more at a "more convenient time," a dangerous decision.
While not the traditional account of Jesus' death and resurrection from the Gospels, Psalm 22 is no less descriptive, especially considering that it was written 1,000 years before Christ. It begins with affliction and ends with praise.
Paul is brought before Felix, where he is falsely accused by Tertullus, a Jewish lawyer, of stirring up the people, causing riots and desecrating the temple. Other Jews joined in this accusation, although there were no witnesses. Paul’s accusation was in many ways similar to what Jesus faced with the Roman and Jewish authorities before His crucifixion. Paul makes his case and he’s released to the custody of a centurion, until Lysius, the commander, comes.
Paul is brought before the Sanhedrin where he testifies of his life and speaks of the resurrection, thus dividing the Pharisees and the Sadducees, the latter not believing in the resurrection. An outcry arose and Paul was taken from among them for his protection. The Lord then encouraged him that there was more for him to do. The Jews formed a pact to kill him, but the Lord protected him and allowed him to go to Caesarea where Felix, the Roman governor, would hear his case.
The recently-returned missions team to Nepal shares their experiences.
Jesus was confronted by the Pharisees and others from Jerusalem, accusing Him and his followers of not washing their hands, against the traditions of the elders. This was simply a “tradition,” as opposed to Jewish law. Jesus told them they held fast to their traditions at the cost of neglecting God’s commandments. Being able to let go of traditions but hold fast to the heart and Word of God was one reason God used Chuck Smith to reach the hippies. We need to ask ourselves: What traditions do we ...
In Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth, he addresses problems of purity within the church, mainly, that brothers are going to law against one another in the world's - unbelievers' - court system. Paul admonishes them to settle disputes among themselves and to stop trying to cheat each other. In preparation for the rest of the chapter, he also lists a number of sins that those who practice them will not inherit the kingdom of God.
