John is writing to strengthen our faith and to assure us of our fellowship with God. He challenged us to walk in the light—to walk with honesty in the revelation of God’s truth (1:5-2:2). Some may now be wondering how do we know that we know Him—that we are in relationship with Him. John’s answer is that our fellowship with Him is not primarily about what we avoid, but what we pursue.
