The Rainbow Dragon Part 2 The Yellow and Orange Dragons Wizzlethorpe the wizard had a new obsession, the rainbow dragon. It wasn't actually a single dragon, it was actually a dragon.
Actually, a number of dragons, each a different colour and each the size of a small bird. He had learned about them from Yasashi Oni. who had explained where he could find the red dragon, which he had tracked down and tamed with the help of Sir Chucklenugget. Now he had clambered back up the mountains to find out more about the rest of the rainbow dragons. Ah, you have done well, young wizard.
said the wise old oni. You have proved yourself a worthy collector of beasts. Thank you, Yasashi. What about the rest of the dragons? You need to be patient. They are scattered throughout Magimajira. The next dragons you seek can be found in... The Blasted Dunes. The Blasted Dunes? But surely nothing could survive in that boiling desert. You are mistaken. There you will find the yellow and orange rainbow dragons.
The orange is the master of light, and the yellow is the master of air. Good luck, friend. And so... Wizzlethorpe set off on his next dragon hunting adventure. But first, he stopped off in Snaggleton to get a little help. Jinx! Snickerfang! The wizard called out at the entrance to the beetle burrow. Two familiar faces peeped out. What's up, Wiz? Jinx asked, grinning as her purple hair bounced around her face. A bat fluttered from her hair, causing Snickerfang to jump back with a squeak.
I'm off to the blasted dunes, Wizzlethorpe said. Ooh, gasped the goblins. The blasted dunes? I heard it's a place full of sneaky sand and hot, frickly air. Exactly. And that's where we'll find two tiny rainbow dragons. The orange and the yellow rainbow dragons. Yasashi only told me about them. And I want to tame them and add them to my collection. Oh ho, Snickerfang said, rubbing his hands together. I bet we can make them laugh. A little bug's favorite joke might do the trick.
No time's for jokes, Snickerfang, Jinx said, rolling her eyes. We're in, Wizzledorp. Let's get moving. The sooner we find them, the sooner we get to the fun parish. Wizzlethorpe, Jinx and Snickerfang set off, heading toward the blasted dunes. The journey was long. And soon, the trio found themselves surrounded by the harsh, sun-scorched desert. The air shimmered with heat. and the sand underfoot was hot enough to make their feet ache. As they trudged on, the wind began to pick up.
swirling dust and sand into their faces. Oh, I can't see a thing! Jinx squinted, trying to shield her eyes. The sand's getting in my teeth! Snickerfang complained. his nose scrunching up. Whistlethorpe adjusted his hat, which flapped as the wind blew, and said, We must keep moving! The dragons must be around here somewhere! Just as they took another step, the ground beneath them gave way with a loud whoosh. Ah, it's quicksand! Jinx yelled as she slipped into the sand.
We need to find something to hold on to! Wizzlethorpe shouted, but as he reached out to grab a nearby cactus, he got stuck too! Uh-oh! Snickerfang said his big eyes wide with alarm. I think I'm going to squish in the squishy sand. The three of them were stuck deep in the quicksand and no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't pull themselves out. The desert was hot and the sand was pulling them deeper by the second.
Wiz, we're going under, begged Snickerfang. Can't you cast a spell or something? Wizzlethorpe looked around desperately for anything that might help. His eyes lit up when he saw a ladybug. Peering out of Snickerfang's messy hair, he began to cast a spell. Tiny crawler, rise and glow! Stretch your legs and wings to show! By ancient magic, vast shall be! A steed of wonder, now carry me!
The little insect began to grow larger and larger until it was as big as a horse. Hurry! Grab on to a leg! yelled Wizzlethorpe. They each clung onto the bewildered creature as it flapped its wings and dragged them out of the quicksand. Well, that was a close one. Wizzlethorpe said, dusting himself off as the ladybug flew away. Too close, Jinx muttered. Let's make sure we don't do that again.
As the three of them trudged on, they saw a strange shape shimmering in the distance. It looked like a ghostly vision of something moving across the dunes. The heat made it so hard to see clearly. Look, Jinx said, pointing ahead. Is that a dragon? Whistlethorpe adjusted his hat, trying to get a better view. I think it might be too. Let's go check it out. Two small, colorful dragons were perched on a rock, their eyes shining like gems.
The orange one had bright fiery scales that glowed like the sun, and the yellow one had a golden sheen that shimmered in the light. Snickerfang gasped, his eyes wide open. They're tiny. They look really dangerous. The orange dragon, with its glowing scales, suddenly took a deep breath. and blasted a blinding flash of sunlight at them. Ah! Wizzlethorpe yelped, shielding his eyes with his hands. Ah!
Jinx cried, squinting. That's like staring into the sun. The yellow dragon snorted, and suddenly a whirlwind swirled up around them, pushing them back. The wind was so strong that it almost knocked them off the rock. Hold on! Wizzlethorpe shouted, grabbing onto the rock. This is a fight we're not going to win by force! Jinx and Snickerfang scrambled to hold on, but the wind was too powerful. Wizzlethorpe's hat was almost blown away. Maybe we should run, Jinx shouted, trying to catch her breath.
No, we can't, Wizzlethorpe said, his voice filled with determination. I have an idea. He took a deep breath and said, We'll give them a peace offering. A peace offering? Snickerfang asked. What's that? A fancy bug sandwich? No, no. These are creatures of the desert. What is the most precious thing here? Jinx rolled her eyes. Gold, silver, treasure. Snickerfang's eyes lit up. Water. Everything needs water.
And there's none in this desert. Wizzlethorpe, put your hands together to make them into a bowl. He pulled out a small bottle of water and poured it into Wizzlethorpe's hands. The two dragons' eyes widened and they scampered towards it. They began lapping up the water eagerly. And soon the orange dragon was nudging Whistlethorpe's hand, asking for more. Amazing! Whistlethorpe said, laughing. Snickerfang, you're a genius!
The dragons drank more and more water, and eventually they both sat down, content and happy. Now that we've made friends, Jinx said, How about we give them names? I like Sunflare for the orange one. Snickerfang said, stroking the dragon's scales. It fits the way it controls the sunlight. I like everything. Arrows back for the yellow one, Jinx said with a grin. Sun flare and arrows back it is, Wizzlethorpe said, clapping his hands. Now, let's get them home.

Chapter 10 The Counselors Wear the Magic Cloak When Tollidob, still wearing the magic cloak,
had bowed before the king. Bud asked, How many men are there in the royal army, General? Seven thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven. May it please your gracious majesty. returned Tollydob. That is, without counting myself. And do they obey your orders promptly? inquired Bud. who felt a little doubt on this point. Yes, indeed, answered the general proudly. They are terribly afraid of my anger. And yet you are a very small man to command so large an army, said the king.
the lord high general flushed with shame for although he was both old and fat he was so short of stature that he stood but a trifle taller than but himself And like all short men, he was very sensitive about his height. I'm a terrible fighter, your majesty. declared Tollydob earnestly. And when I am on horseback, my small size is little noticed. Nevertheless, he added with a sigh,
It is a good thing to be told. I wish I were ten feet high. No sooner were the words spoken than Bud gave a cry of astonishment. for the general's head shot suddenly upward until his gorgeous hat struck the ceiling and was jammed down tightly over the startled man's eyes and nose. The room was just ten feet high. and Tolidob was now ten feet tall. But for a time the old general could not think what had happened to him, and Bud, observing for the first time that Tolidob wore the magic cloak,
began to shriek with laughter at the comical result of the old man's wish. Hearing the king laugh, the general tore the hat from his head and looked at himself in mingled terror and admiration. From being a very small man, he had suddenly become a giant. And the change was so great that Tollidob might well be amazed. What has... "'What happened, your majesty?' he asked in a trembling voice. "'Why don't you see you were wearing my sister's magic cloak?' said Bud,
still laughing at the big man's woeful face. And it grants to every wearer the fulfilment of one wish. Only one? inquired poor Tollydob. I'd like to be a little smaller, I confess. It can't be helped now, said Bud. You wish to be ten feet tall and there you are. And there you'll have to stay, Tolly Dob, whether you like it or not. But...
I'm very proud of you. You must be the greatest general in all the world, you know. Tollydob brightened up at this and tried to sit down in a chair, but it crushed to pieces under his weight. So he sighed and remained standing. Then he threw the magic cloak upon the floor with a little shudder at its very powers and said, If only I'd known! I might have become just six feet tall instead of ten!
Never mind, said Bud consolingly. If we ever have a war, you will strike terror into the ranks of the enemy, and everyone in Noland will admire you immensely. Hereafter, you will be not only the Lord High General... but the Lord Very High General. So Tolidob went away to show himself to the chief counsellor, and he had to stoop very low to pass through the doorway.
When Jiki saw the gigantic man coming out of the king's chamber, he gave a scream and fled in terror. And strange to say, this effect was very agreeable.
