Episode description

This week we review the German anti-war epic: All Quiet on the Western Front! Based on the 1929 book 'Im Western nights Neues,' this film follows Paul Bäumer as a German soldier on the western front during World War I. Paul is quickly faced with the harsh realities of war, destroying his preconceived notions of becoming a war hero. This is a film about survival and the atrocities of war. It has been hailed by critics in the U.S. for it's focus on the futility of war, and decried by critics in Germany as being an unfaithful adaptation of its' source material... But Is All Quiet on the Western Front Good?
