[SPEAKER_01]: Episode one, ninety-six. [SPEAKER_01]: Today we talk the trade of Keep Ryan Hayes, the sweep over the San Francisco Giants, and preview the upcoming series against the Colorado Rockies. [SPEAKER_01]: You're listening to the Bucco Banner podcast brought to you by the Just Baseball Media Network. [SPEAKER_01]: Huge music. [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome back to another episode of BuccoBanner and Isaac Matzen is the best pitcher in baseball. [SPEAKER_01]: Amen, brother.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's my conclusion right now. [SPEAKER_01]: That Bucco banter bump baby. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: No, I was screaming in my apartment today. [SPEAKER_02]: He fires me up like, and not just because he's a Western PA guy. [SPEAKER_02]: He went to pit. [SPEAKER_02]: He just gets so emotional amount and he just shoves it down your throat. [SPEAKER_02]: Nothing fancy. [SPEAKER_02]: Just old school man competition. [SPEAKER_02]: It's it's fun to watch nails.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now, absolute nails, but the pirates swept the giants. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's not even close to the biggest news of the day. [SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to talk about it with Noah Hiles and our live show. [SPEAKER_01]: This is going to come out after that. [UNKNOWN]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: But we need to discuss it because the discourse about the key Brian Hayes trade. [SPEAKER_01]: has driven me up a freaking wall today, Scott.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I know you tweeted, you'd think we traded prime Alex Rodriguez. [SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy. [SPEAKER_02]: It's crazy. [SPEAKER_02]: Like even some people that were in media and Pittsburgh were just like another benchering to now. [SPEAKER_02]: Like I don't think trading your six, seven, six career, OPS, third baseman is it falls under that category. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sorry.

[SPEAKER_02]: Like I don't see [SPEAKER_02]: where people are clinging, I think, to Cabri and Hayes here, like I just think it's the reason to complain and I get it. [SPEAKER_02]: The pirates don't give us a lot to cheer about. [SPEAKER_02]: They give us more to complain about, but let's open our minds a little bit here. [SPEAKER_02]: Like this is we're not trading the face of the franchise. [SPEAKER_01]: Right.

[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe if you, if you're third baseman, you gave all that money to in a big contract you would hit. [SPEAKER_01]: They wouldn't be as bad as they are right now. [SPEAKER_01]: I know people are saying he's a gold glove. [SPEAKER_02]: He's a gold glove. [SPEAKER_01]: I get that. [SPEAKER_01]: I get that. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's true. [SPEAKER_02]: So it's true. [SPEAKER_02]: It's true.

[SPEAKER_02]: But like you can't play that premium position and not like Matt Chapman gets a little bit of a is a terrible comparison, but like he gets some leeway because he doesn't hit three hundred, but like he has some power and he's not very, he's not like a consistent bat, but like he provides some offense. [SPEAKER_02]: You can't go much below that at a premium position.

[SPEAKER_02]: Especially with the pirates, a small market team, you can't afford to be paying a guy with a six, seven, six OPS as one of your highest paid off had suppliers. [SPEAKER_02]: There's very little margin for error here. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think it gives some more flexibility going forward. [SPEAKER_02]: Now will they use that opportunity of flexibility wisely? [SPEAKER_02]: That's another question.

[SPEAKER_02]: But to get anything in return for Cabrín Hayes, [SPEAKER_02]: I think it was a win-win. [SPEAKER_01]: Here's another thing. [SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to rebuild your entire franchise trading one guy unless it's like a Juan Soto Paul Steve's type guy and you're bringing that type of return at the right time. [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to bring in guys that are just going to fill up your farm system for the most part. [SPEAKER_01]: Most trades are like that.

[SPEAKER_01]: What did you expect in return for Keep Ryan Hayes? [SPEAKER_01]: We've said it on the show that it's likely going to be a lower level prospect. [SPEAKER_02]: I expected someone I never heard of. [SPEAKER_02]: To be honest with you, I expected guys that I'd never heard of. [SPEAKER_02]: Same as Sephiroth was a big prep that in like two drafts ago in twenty twenty three out of New York. [SPEAKER_02]: He was supposed to be at first round or he went in the second round.

[SPEAKER_02]: Like he's a guy that was I think committed to Vanderbilt or Clemson, one or the two like this is a legit prospect and to see his name in the return package, I was like, [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, yeah, because we can keep Ryan, we could also talk years of control. [SPEAKER_01]: If we want to throw that argument out there, five years on the contract. [SPEAKER_01]: So we're just going to give keep Ryan Hayes another five years to be a very, very below average hitter.

[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, there's some good defense and just ignore the fact that this team still cannot score any runs that they'll go over twelve with runners and scoring position pretty much on a daily basis. [SPEAKER_01]: that they'll waste the best pitching staff in baseball that they'll waste Paul schemes, but we're going to give keep Ryan Hayes the longest leash in all of baseball because he's and I'll give it an elite defender. [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, but cannot hit to save his life.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it's the same thing every single year. [SPEAKER_01]: He has chronic back issues. [SPEAKER_01]: He's missed a ton of time because that let's also get down to the dirty stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: not that creative a clubhouse guy. [SPEAKER_01]: We talk about a winning baseball culture in Pittsburgh bringing in guys. [SPEAKER_01]: You've said it on this show. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a bunch of puzzle pieces right now that do not fit together and keep Ryan Hayes is one of those pieces.

[SPEAKER_01]: He's a broken off edge that your dog took a big little bite out of and now the whole puzzle is ruined because you just can't squeeze him in there. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: That's what it is. [SPEAKER_01]: He's had multiple disagreements with the front office. [SPEAKER_01]: His family [SPEAKER_01]: is very known on social media for just absolutely hating the pirates. [SPEAKER_01]: If you're not aware of it, go to his dad's page, go to his brother's page.

[SPEAKER_01]: They threaten the fight pirates fans. [SPEAKER_01]: Now, the one fan that they're threatening the fight, so be it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like they've been begging for him to get out of here for years. [SPEAKER_01]: Keep Ryan Heese did not want to be in Pittsburgh. [SPEAKER_01]: He was not out of here. [SPEAKER_01]: He was not a good teammate.

[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, from the short time that we've been on the field for this year, you could see guys out there chopping it up, talking in the dugout. [SPEAKER_01]: How many times did you see keep Ryan Heese out there with a single person? [SPEAKER_02]: Never with anybody. [SPEAKER_02]: You know, it's something I noticed is the guys that stick together like Nikki G Spencer Horowitz and like chair trill.

[SPEAKER_02]: Say what you want about trill, a trill is definitely a like guy in that clubhouse. [SPEAKER_02]: There's no doubt about that. [SPEAKER_02]: Now, I mean, obviously there's questions about the bat there, but I think [SPEAKER_02]: You've got to, you can't have it both ways. [SPEAKER_02]: You have to pick a direction here. [SPEAKER_02]: And the part is picked a direction, right? [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to move almost to Brian Hayes.

[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to give ourselves more flexibility to get better here. [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm excited for that opportunity. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not necessarily confident that it's going to go go well, but I'm excited with the opportunity to bring in different guys in this cover. [SPEAKER_02]: Because change was obviously needed. [SPEAKER_02]: Obviously. [SPEAKER_02]: I think you're lying to yourself. [SPEAKER_02]: I think we can all agree that change was needed.

[SPEAKER_02]: And it started with guys like Cabrad Hayes. [SPEAKER_02]: And man, you can't win when the team isn't playing as a team. [SPEAKER_02]: You just can't. [SPEAKER_02]: And it's hard to say, even from our perspective, being on the field. [SPEAKER_02]: We see it from a close perspective, but we're not in the clubhouse, right? [SPEAKER_02]: We don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: We don't talk to these guys every single day, every hour. [SPEAKER_01]: But we have sources.

[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we hear things and when we see things and we can make our own conclusions based off of that and changes needed. [SPEAKER_02]: I think it was fairly obvious and this is a step in the right direction. [SPEAKER_02]: Now, with the trades that have happened today, do they change the outlook for twenty twenty six now? [SPEAKER_01]: That was never going to be the case with a key Brian Hayes tree.

[SPEAKER_01]: It never was just just a little bit since he debuted in twenty twenty he had a hundred of bats in the covid year.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, he hit three eighty OPS well above a thousand since then since twenty from twenty one to now he has a three fifty six lug a six fifty eight OPS and he's only hit thirty four home runs he has to this season he has zero pop [SPEAKER_01]: and he's not contributing anywhere close to the middle of the line of production that you would expect from a guy that you're paying that much money for.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, it fired me up today because I'm happy with the return that they got. [SPEAKER_01]: Now Taylor Rogers, that's going to be flips like pretty easily. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't even if they did flip him like to get a good reliever. [SPEAKER_01]: You got a good reliever. [SPEAKER_02]: Very well known, great, pretty consistent reliever in this league. [SPEAKER_02]: And [SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think they're definitely, they see the reliever market.

[SPEAKER_02]: You saw what, uh, Duran, let four per minute soda to the fillies and I think because I've even gotten even more, but like I think the price of Bednor and Santana went significantly up and [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a good thing. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think Ben's playing it well so far. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, you might have another chip there that you can move.

[SPEAKER_02]: And so your trading can brighten Hayes for not just Taylor Rogers and Stanley, Sammy Sephora, but also whoever you get in return for flipping Taylor Rogers. [SPEAKER_02]: And it could turn out to be a big win for us. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm holding my breath, but, you know, [SPEAKER_02]: Let's, let's not get caught up in the whole trading guys away, you know, dialogue and the, you know, what, what the pirates are known for.

[SPEAKER_02]: This, this needed to happen and I think that I think we can all agree on that. [SPEAKER_01]: By buying into the, this is a terrible trade, you're almost buying into the philosophy of what the pirates have had for the past six years, which is overvalued in guys and hanging on for too long. [SPEAKER_01]: You, you've just bought into that by being mad. [SPEAKER_01]: or keep Ryan Hayes getting sent off. [SPEAKER_01]: He's been on a longer leash than any other team would have allowed.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: Any other team, just so we're clear Sammy's before this year. [SPEAKER_01]: He's twenty years old. [SPEAKER_01]: His slash lines two sixty two three ninety three four eleven eight o four OPS one thirty one WRC plus he's got twenty eight stone bags. [SPEAKER_01]: Scott he's got a plus glove nine triples on the year.

[SPEAKER_02]: a lot of the time plus runner plus plus runner and I think there's never been a question about the speed and the defense, but the bat seems to take it seems to have taken a step forward this year. [SPEAKER_02]: I would anticipate he was in Dayton, hi a Dayton. [SPEAKER_02]: I would expect him to go to Greensboro be interesting to add to that line up and [SPEAKER_02]: Um, I'm excited, man. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, this is your threat.

[SPEAKER_02]: You, you had another bat in the system that with pedigree and, um, who seems to have taken a step forward this year, man, one, thirty one WRC plus that's, don't have many of those bats in the system. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: And then before we move on to the games Caleb Ferguson, who has been a solid arm out of the bullpen for the pirates this year, a good signing. [SPEAKER_01]: by the front office was traded to the Mariners for Geter Martinez.

[SPEAKER_01]: So you're essentially trading a rental for a lottery piece here. [SPEAKER_01]: We talked to our guys over at the Marine Layer Podcast. [SPEAKER_01]: You say, hey, what's the deal with Geter Martinez? [SPEAKER_01]: They gave this guy a six hundred thousand dollars. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that is from Mexico. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's from Mexico. [SPEAKER_01]: I believe so a lot of talent there, not a lot of control, a lot to work with, but what do the pirates do well?

[SPEAKER_01]: They develop arms. [SPEAKER_01]: So you're getting rid of a guy who was gone anyways. [SPEAKER_01]: for somebody who could potentially be a very, very good arm later on down the road. [SPEAKER_01]: It's something for nothing, okay? [SPEAKER_01]: Again, I saw some people just being mad to be mad. [SPEAKER_02]: This is a real prospect with real upside throws hard. [SPEAKER_02]: It's just about putting it all together. [SPEAKER_02]: He's still young.

[SPEAKER_02]: The command is the question mark right now, but like, this is what you get for a [SPEAKER_02]: Caleb Ferguson, middle-releaf type prospect. [SPEAKER_02]: He's not a guy that's going to pitch in the back and in high-level roles where he's going to come in and know people down. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't do that. [SPEAKER_02]: He does, and yeah, rack-up case.

[SPEAKER_02]: He's going to be a reliable bullpinorm, but to get a top-fifteen prospect out of an organization for this guy, a guy with upside, a lottery pick, as they call them. [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's [SPEAKER_02]: about what we'd expect. [SPEAKER_02]: It's kind of like the Carlos Santana for John. [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, took boards right out of the people are like, this is not going to help us for next year.

[SPEAKER_01]: What do you want to bring back and gamble in return for Kate? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think that's not a there's no major league ready baths for Kate and Ferguson at the deadline. [SPEAKER_01]: All right. [SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about it more with no on the live show, which will be out before you're listening to this.

[SPEAKER_01]: Scott, before we get into it, total sports enterprises has you covered for all of your Pittsburgh sports memorabilia needs, pirates, penguins, dealers, and more go to tscshop.com. [SPEAKER_01]: If you go to the description below, click the link, let them know, buckle, banter, sent you. [SPEAKER_01]: Let's get into Monday's game versus the giants. [SPEAKER_01]: Okay. [SPEAKER_01]: W, Mitch Keller on the mound.

[SPEAKER_01]: for the first time this year just could not really put it together be that innings eater that they that he has been for a majority of the season he went to innings five hits three earned three walks three k's forty two strikes on seventy three pitches in two inning but the bullpen was spectacular you had Cabrera Ramirez mats in with two straightouts in an innings and tana and then bednar who

[SPEAKER_01]: Had, if you look at it just like on its face, it's like, yeah, he got hit three hits one earn. [SPEAKER_01]: Those at bats were some of the best at bats. [SPEAKER_01]: I've seen from any major leagueer in the span of one inning. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if they picked something up on him, but they were just covering all parts of his own. [SPEAKER_01]: I texted it in our chat. [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, these are some of the greatest at bats I've ever seen.

[SPEAKER_01]: His stuff was on. [SPEAKER_01]: It looked good. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, but they put it away. [SPEAKER_01]: They got the W. [SPEAKER_01]: got went up one nothing in San Francisco, which brings us to Tuesday, Scott. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Tuesday, Billy Fulter went five innings two hits one earned four walks one K. [SPEAKER_02]: that one run once on a home run, is ERAZ at three, seventy three after this series.

[SPEAKER_02]: We also got Brachton, Brachston Ashcraft with the W, three innings, no hit, one K. Generated four wifs as a two, seventeen ERAF for this outing. [SPEAKER_02]: Don't say anything about his sixth save of the season, one innings, no hits, two K's. [SPEAKER_02]: But one, thirty, six year, man, I bet some teams jumping at the bat for Dennis Santana to log by six p.m. [SPEAKER_02]: tomorrow. [SPEAKER_02]: Peggy, Peggy has provided some spark offensively at the plate.

[SPEAKER_02]: Good to see. [SPEAKER_02]: One for four with his first home run, the year two RBIs. [SPEAKER_02]: That home run was off just some burliner, four to two year old just some burliner, but still good for Peggy. [SPEAKER_02]: Tommy Fam, hottest man in baseball, three for four of the double averages up to two, seven, three, which is insane.

[SPEAKER_02]: Twelve hits total, two for nine with honors and scoring position, ten left on base, eleven k's in game two, come away with a three to one doubt. [SPEAKER_01]: Before I move on to today's game, it would be remiss to say, not say, [SPEAKER_01]: Andrew McCutchen, Ken home runs. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_01]: Every single season, he hit a home running game one along with Nikki G. That was the offense that was provided.

[SPEAKER_01]: Wednesday, Versaegean's two-to-one dub, Mike Burrows was excellent six innings, three hits, one earned seven. [SPEAKER_01]: Case, Carmen, one inning, one hit, and then Isaac Mats and Manch shot the door, two innings, two hits, three strikeouts and extras. [SPEAKER_01]: The offense, Spencer Horowitz, Batman has gone a little bit too for fourth one, RBI one walk.

[SPEAKER_01]: Davis had an RBI in extra innings as a team, fourteen strikeout, seven walks, seven hits, over twelve runners in scoring position, thirteen left on base. [SPEAKER_01]: They swept the giants. [SPEAKER_01]: They have won eight of their last nine since they were swept by the white socks. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, let it fire under them, I guess, but I don't know, man, the giants are definitely falling a little bit too.

[SPEAKER_02]: It seems like they picked a direction here with the podgers and dodgers really pulling away in the west. [SPEAKER_02]: So, um, it doesn't get any much harder because they go to Colorado after this and Colorado's got, I don't think they even have thirty wins yet. [SPEAKER_02]: So, um, [SPEAKER_02]: should be an interesting road to end of the road trip. [SPEAKER_02]: Could they come away with six wins this road trip? [SPEAKER_02]: Which would be interesting.

[SPEAKER_02]: That would be awesome. [SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be an exciting week to be a pirate's fan, because not only are they winning, but things are getting shaken up, which they absolutely need to be. [SPEAKER_01]: Scott, let's get into the series versus the Rockies. [SPEAKER_01]: The Rockies right now, whether they're the worst team in baseball, twenty eight and seventy nine, fifth in the NLOS bad. [SPEAKER_01]: If you think you have a bad [SPEAKER_01]: My God.

[SPEAKER_01]: My God, it is bad out there. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to see the Rockies out in Colorado, then we're going to see them later this month at PNC Park, a little reunion for Clint Hurdle. [SPEAKER_01]: I'll get us kicked off on Friday, right-hand a picture Antonio Sinsantella, first Andrew Heaney, if Heaney is here. [SPEAKER_01]: on Friday, big news.

[SPEAKER_01]: This year, Antonio says in Tella, four and fourteen six six eight ERA in a hundred and two and one third innings pitch, twenty one games, fifty five k's with a one eight four whip. [SPEAKER_01]: The arsenal is a forcing slider curve, change, sinker, pitch to contact righty who thrives when he's getting ground balls and limiting walks. [SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't possess overpowering stuff, but he's proven serviceable in the middle or back end of a rotation one healthy.

[SPEAKER_01]: Low strike out rate, one of the lowest K per nine among certain pitchers lacks a true out pitch relying heavily on contact management, vulnerability to getting hit hard. [SPEAKER_01]: When command falters, he can be susceptible to barrels and extra base hits, particularly when pitching at altitude, which is at his home stadium. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, bad place to be a Saturday.

[SPEAKER_02]: We got Austin, Gomburt against Paul Steans, Gombres, Owen five, the six, twenty eight, ERA and thirty eight and two thirds innings pitch. [SPEAKER_02]: It game started twenty two k's and one six six with I'm not going to lie to you when we're putting together these pitching scouting reports. [SPEAKER_02]: I was depressed. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was really depressed. [SPEAKER_02]: This is, it's been a tell.

[SPEAKER_02]: It might have been the worst picture and baseball to this point this year. [SPEAKER_02]: So, uh, Gomberg works with a foreseeing, a curve, a slider, a change, let's use part of the return of the air in the Arno trade a few years ago from St. [SPEAKER_02]: Louis to Colorado. [SPEAKER_02]: He's a crafty, left-hander with average stuff, but a deep pitch mix and enough to fail to remain in a big league rotation.

[SPEAKER_02]: His performance is often tied to location sequencing, as he doesn't have the raw tolls to overpower hitters. [SPEAKER_02]: His car boss is best pitch, a big looping break with strong vertical movement, through twelve to six, uses it effectively to change speeds and I levels especially against right-handed hitters. [SPEAKER_02]: Adam, take us into Sunday. [SPEAKER_01]: Sunday Bradley Blaylock vs. Mitch Keller.

[SPEAKER_01]: Again, maybe, depending on what happens by Thursday's deadline, Blaylock this year is one in two with a seven oh nine ERA in thirty three innings pitched eight games, sixteen keys with a one six four whip. [SPEAKER_01]: The arsenal is a forcing split slider curve and a cutter high upside arm with two potentially above average pitches in the fastball in the curveball. [SPEAKER_01]: And in a evolving splitter that would give him a three pitch mix capable of missing bats.

[SPEAKER_01]: Deceptive Arm Path year Scott, the over-the-top slot, helps hide the ball in place of velocity, especially helpful given his strike throwing style. [SPEAKER_01]: Plus, basketball curve combo, a ride heavy fastball paired with a deep sharp curveball represent his best offerings. [SPEAKER_01]: They have to win this series. [SPEAKER_01]: We're talking like toilet bowls, and I know we mentioned that coming out of the break with the white socks, and we just got our asses handed to us.

[SPEAKER_01]: This is something, these are games you need to win. [SPEAKER_01]: And let's just keep piling, let's keep stacking. [SPEAKER_01]: some good momentum coming out of the trade deadline, I have some positivity. [SPEAKER_01]: This should be positive. [SPEAKER_01]: Again, I know history tells us Bencherington's trades are not, but the moves made today are good moves for this organization. [SPEAKER_01]: They are good. [SPEAKER_01]: Trust us. [SPEAKER_01]: They are good.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to tell you to trust the process because there's no way you should. [SPEAKER_01]: You shouldn't trust the process. [SPEAKER_01]: But if we're talking just these two moves today, this is fine. [SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get into more detail with no hiles, but my God, where the reactions bat. [SPEAKER_02]: Believe it or not, the pirates are not paying us to say this. [SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, this is our honest opinion.

[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, for the guys that they dealt today could Brian Hayes came from Ferguson, like you got what we, well, with Brian Hayes, we got more than what I expected beyond as with you to see a name that I knew on there. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, wow, okay, let's go. [SPEAKER_02]: With Caleb Ferguson, I was just ready to be like, all right, what kind of lottery ticket can I like dream on here? [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what we got.

[SPEAKER_02]: So more to come, Santana, Bednar, maybe IKF, some other guys. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll see. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm excited to chop it up with Noah here in a second. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, if you don't already make sure you go to the YouTube subscribe, like leave a comment, tell a friend to tell a friend, go to BuccoBanter.com, get the merch, go to the socials, make sure that you follow all of the pages.

[SPEAKER_01]: That's Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, blue sky, only fans, wherever you want to find us, will be providing you with the best Pirates content possible. [SPEAKER_01]: And until next time, raise it. [SPEAKER_01]: Raise it. [SPEAKER_00]: Get me let me run the base. [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah my time is like my money cuz I can't
