It is the drive brew brought to you by Russian River brewing and the victory house in Santa Rosa.
Okay. Here linda, That'll turn it to you from right now. Just real quick speaking beginning of Russian bringing our sponsor. Natalie sent me a message and she said this is so. I went take my dad to this because he's gonna love it. This. Advanced to the Race, and I'm a Nationals at Sonoma Race way that are this kind, July 26 through 20 eighth, so the weekend app or our beer festival. So you can do both.
Russian river brewing in windsor will have 2 top fuel drags in 1 funny car on display from 4 to 7PM or 3 time world champions Ant anton Brown, owner driver, the Mat Drags and Ron caps, owner driver of the Napa, auto parts Funny car will be there to meet people. Joining us is Renee. She is with New A and B brewing company. He acknowledged to be the first post prohibition micro in the United States, and the return of Don Barkley from Mend Brewing? Don. What's new with Mend Brewing.
Well, you know, it was a few years ago that Men Brewing slid under the waves. You know, and those those things happened. And it was a great brewery, a great run. We made red tail, ale. I have a hawk blue hair and all those great beers. You know, I knew all this because we talked. About it last time you were on. But somebody wrote Don Barkley from Mend you brewing, which is true. Yes. Yes. About but when you're as old as I, and you forget stuff. But,
of course, we know that. But well, absolutely because, you know, really where I cut my teeth. Was that I started that at the new A Brewing company. Of course. As you said, the very first micro burrito to open up in the United States since prohibition If you... The end of prohibition happened in 19 33. Yeah. 3334, which is. 19 76. 09:40 years, there were no nope recently in the United States. And, of course, Jack Mc macarthur started the new A brewing company in Sonoma,
California, it was wonderful. Bowl. And that's why it's really special to be here today because I have Renee right here what happens to be, Jack's daughter is really funded. Crazy Well you come with us, Dawn to go look at the site, since you work there in sonoma. While she's here. It's drape around. Oh my gosh. We should totally do that. I might be able to do... Jack find you to to be because customer. I don't know that. Oh, you don't know. I don't.
It was pretty funny When I first started to go to the universe to the California Davis. Mh my studying fermentation science. My lead professor, on doctor Michael Lewis said, you know I asked him how can I get a job in the brewing industry, Blah Blah? He says, well, you have long hair, So you're gonna have to cut your hair and I said no. No. I'm gonna cut my hair. And he said, well, you might wanna go see this odd character that's over in Sonoma, California guy by the name of
Jack the call if Yeah. He comes over and he goes through the all the books in the library about brewing, and you might go talk to. So I over to Sun sonoma and I walked through the door and Jack was sitting there. At is big desk in a little tiny room. Great big desk. But a tiny room. And I said, Jack, I wanna brew for you. And he looks at me. And you look... And he just sort looks up and down and just says get out of here. And you just like, you know, leave, Don't even bother me,
just get out of. Really. Don't feel bad. He said the same thing to Ken Gross. Oh, which Ken talks about. No doubt. Yeah. I went back to the new Audi brewing company a couple months later and the person that was sitting at that desk was a gal by the name of Susie Stern. So Susie Dennis. And I told her I'll work for free. And, I need something to do for the smile. And so for a case of beer a week, which was the perfect payment for a
guy in college. Right. I got a case a beer a week and they're really good beer. Really good beer, and I had make it myself. Know, you know Jack Mc, And you have his recipes or at least some of them. Right? Yeah. I wouldn't no. That's what we're tasting. What you brew from that right. Jack Mc macarthur recipe. Yeah. It's really interesting because and it was lovely being able to help brew this beer because we did it up at the Wolf house Brewing company. Kevin love it is the brewer up there.
Is that Mend? Yes it's actually the northern part, the northern most town in Sonoma County. Kevin Love it, happens to be Michael Love sun. Michael Love is my dear friend, and he started at the new A brewing company as well. Yeah. And he actually... Good how to make beer and to do it properly not because he was trained, but because he made tofu ice cream before that. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. It's some in in San Francisco. I have to say no thanks on that. Don't save me a seat for the tofu
ice cream. But go ahead. Tofu ice cream in 19 80. Oh. Don't think it was good. Don't panic. It's organic. So Michael love it had a son. Kevin, and he was born, the very first summer that the Mend casino brewing company was in Mend you. Right. In Hoffman, California. And So Heaven is now old enough to be making his own beer and own oath small little brewery and Clover ale, the Wolf house brewing company. So we were able to catch you.
Jack Mc macarthur recipe, And I said, Kevin, you gotta brew this beer. It's part of your heritage, and so he came up with the... That is... New album pay ale for the original... Book that Jack. There was anything changed when you made it? And did you do any tweaking? Where we did tweak it just a little does. Yeah. We used the same hops, which are cascade and cluster gas hops. As important. Yeah. That's an important part of the whole thing.
We didn't use very many hops I think the Ib used, the bitterness units and this is about 20 to 25, something like that. But we do put just a little bit of dry hopping in some of the those cascade later in the fermentation just to pop it up a little bit. Otherwise, this would be so old school that everybody you know What is? This 1 of the finest beers I've ever tasted. I'm serious, man. I am blown away by this. It's new A pay.
That's why it was successful. And when Jim Cook introduced it, to the masses again in 2012 when Boston beer brew, your recipe, Don. He introduced as the iconic column of beer. It's a standard, like, think of the Greek iconic column. Very cool. So Yep. It it is the standard bearer. Well, that's what it is. It's a basis for all the beers and we can have all the Ipa and everything else that's got way too much chops in it.
That you want, but you know, just to sit down and have a really nice parallel. Yes. Do you know my dad calls today's beers that are made with? I can't we hear this? You know, made with cinnamon? And cardamom a mom and gosh, And knows what else. He calls them Hula hoop beers. He says I don't want a Hula hoop beer. I want an ale a porter or a stout. Yeah. There go. There you go. Just give me a really nice beer to drink on a on a warm day or. A nicole day for that, man. Yeah. Can people purchase
or taste this stuff or no? Well, I'll tell you what. Wolf house brewing company has this new A Pao on draft right now, and they'll sell it. So you can go up and find. But the very best place to get it is this Saturday, Right? Yes. At the Sonoma County museum because we've got a bigger thing happening There. It's gonna be great Yeah. We're looking to be more about that. Just a to remind everyone. So it's 4 to 8PM. The Vip part starts at 4 and renee Luke, Jack Mcdonald's
daughter herself will be tapping. A C of this awesome beer. I mean, I'm like, it... Everything that we kinda thought about, like, came to fruition, the I when eric... You know, I to asked Eric Stanley, Like, do you want some help? And I'm like, I know Renee. I know Dawn Barclay. I'm like, hey, Dawn. Do you think maybe we could get someone like, to brew this? And and he's like, yeah. I could do this. But... So it's 4 to 8, you can go on, the the museum, so c dot org site.
It only 15 dollars to the general time and Vip, which is actually sold out, but we are gonna give away a pair of tickets before the end of the, the show is, like 25 bucks. At 04:30 Renee is gonna tap the C, there's gonna be tours happening at the museum. Technically, the tier tours are, like, you know, 4 to 8 during the Vip time. But, you know, Eric Stanley, or I will be happy to give it to tour her. Renee hasn't seen
the exhibit yet. I got to interview Dawn Barkley, Tony Meg mcgee that founded Lug and, Mark Carpenter for anchor who by the way, asked if we would save him some beer if he doesn't make it back from Tahoe a time. As Tahoe. He's in Tahoe, his daughter had his baby. Oh. Yes. So he's... And his son is about to have a second baby. So he's been doing grandpa grandpa grandpa. So downtown Santa Rosa, Downtown, You can park at them mall. So shady, free parking right across the way there, and
we... It's all fence and it's in the sculpture garden. So it's all lit... It's... But it's in the evening when it's cooler or 4 to 8PM, and then, it... I actually have to find about the ages. Like somebody was asking me if it's family friendly. But fresh brew is gonna be pouring. Also, there's gonna be the homebrew brewers collective is gonna be there. So if you wanna find out about learning how to homebrew, like, a lot of you guys started doing,
like, Yeah Jacket did and back. Dawn and mark, you know, Carpenter all of these guys. You can find out from them how to join the Humber collective. The pink food society will be there. As well, and they are for women or anyone who Identifies as woman in any of the beverage business us that used to be only beer. And by the way, I I must say hello to her linda father, who is back with us. Great to see you, sir. Yeah Yeah. Come on in here. Thank you. And, you flew in where do you live again?
Ama, Texas. And Ama has down road a bit. I bought a a great pair of a cowboy that's and Antonio. That's what it did. When I found Jack, he was in San antonio. Wow, Really. Yeah. He had been in Texas for a while, his father had been a code breaker in world war 2 and loved the ethnicity of San Antonio. Oh, yeah. Oh, so. They lived there. I'm gonna be thankful Here. Because California has a connection to Texas. When we first fought with Mexico the second time We beat Mexico, and what did we do?
You, we we kept Texas I also in New Mexico, Arizona and California. Exactly. California. And that was part of Mexico the Spanish were overthrown in in Mexico. And, of course, this area here where their the wine was brought by the the franciscan. San francisco 1 of the missions all way here. This was the ship that just drake when he discovered the new world Northern California, he was in the Golden hi, and that is the ship that made it onto the new I'll be involved. That's very cool. Yeah.
She she is Renee D luca from new A brewing company, which are father founded in the town of sonoma in 19 76. Our dear, a friend and recurring guest, Don Barclay is here. And he brew this beer that is, from the recipe of Jack Mc macarthur from new A and Brewing company. It... It's incredible. Well, you know, Jack always took his inspiration from original,
English style brewing. English Ale. Yeah. Gotcha. And back in the day when Jack first started this whole thing, Of course, the United States brewing industry was doing nothing, but light lag beers. And so he wanted to be something special and so he made a an English style ale. And then he also brought in that whole idea of new a is part of the new California area, and he came up with the logo of the Golden Hi, which is the Sir Francis
drake ship. He knew in his brain, he had these clever ideas He knew that A brewery had to have some kind of history to it. Some kind of story. He talked. And so he developed this story about the Golden He and Sir Francis drink, which was all part of California history And zach incorporated it into the new A brewing company story. Yeah. It was it was genius. For a guy who wasn't educated in March He had a marketing brain. What are you doing with new A brewing and the brewers,
daughter, beer company and stuff. It's my mission really to keep the story in front of craft beer drinkers so that they know about Jack and Don and the New A history and the roots of craft beer. That is my mission. I last brew with brew dog brewing company out of Columbus, Ohio. I live in Ohio, and they did a really nice canned version of the Pale ale and, distributed it mostly throughout Ohio. The cool part about the partnership we did with Brew dog is Brew dog is originally out of Scotland.
And that is where Jack learned to brew when he was in the navy and he was in Scotland. So that was my full circle story there. Well, that's so cool. Yeah. And we did AA1 off run of the beer with them. I don't have a current partner right now other than Wolf. In a Wolf house, which I think is super cool, and I know a lot of people in California would love to see it stay here, so we might be talking a little bit. I don't know. But, I wanted to mention you mentioned doctor Lewis at Uc Davis.
And I got to meet him at the 2019 Miss smithsonian party they had when they had that for the... Bring a revolution there were a lot of the pioneers of Crap beer in the house that night including including my dad, Fritz May, Ken Gross, and doctor Lewis and Jack had not seen many of them for a lot of years. And it was lovely. We got a photo of all them together. It was fabulous. That's great. So Jack learned his brewing in Scotland when he was there with the navy, and a of course,
he was k taken care of nukes. Right? There His big old submarine. You and He was talking him. And so he... When anything happened, of course that was significant in the brewery, like, something that might hold up the brewery. It was called an alpha alert. Dawn, when was the last time you saw Jack, Mc. Oh it was a while ago. I think it was at his birthday. Yeah. The pig party. The bird party pig pig in Arkansas? That's right. Tell them about the Summer Sol party Jack used to have.
Wasn't that the inspiration? Oh, absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. The new A brewing company. Every summer had a summer sol party, and this is where we would, Jack would show us how to do a lu pig. And he would bury this pig in the dirt with a whole bunch of hot rocks. He's spending... He he'd get this big pile. Glass wood and rocks and he'd... We'd be up until, like, 2 or 3 in the morning, which was not unusual. No. Drinking beers.
And we'd burn this huge bon fire until everything was roast and hot, and then you stick this pig in there with a whole bunch of rocks piled you know, into the big hot rocks in the pig, cover it all up, And the next morning, well, sometimes it'd be the afternoon, Whenever we woke up, we'd pull this pig out of the ground, and then the party would begin. And the nice thing about this is this is a kind of a a cultural event. All the
guys from anchor would come up. They drive their van and they'd open the doors of the van. And here be all these low filled bottles that that came off the bottling line. No, it's gonna add to the party. Right. And didn't jack? Come out in a grass and call himself king I wanna lay. Well, if he didn't he to it. Yeah. Oh, no. Private stories. And he would brew a a certain beer every year that somehow got the nickname. Yeah Now, you can speak to this more
than me. Old toe sucker. That was a unique batch of beer. We were working on a recipe for a It was a Barley wine. Wasn't it? No. Actually, No. It was it was gonna be a porter. Yeah okay. But we had, like, 5 different batches that we had, and we had all this beer and he had to taste every 1 of them, a bunch of times and not that... Okay you know, I'd normally sucked toes. But but yeah, by the end of the evening, there was some really interesting things happening. You. Yeah.
I'm sorry. I wasn't there. Yeah. Well, Susie. Maybe I should these these things have normally, at Susie Stu house, Susie Dennis House. She had a hot tub Awesome. They helped with the toes. I do wanna mention about Susie and Jane Zimmerman. So they great people. Yeah. They helped bring finance. The new A with Jack K help me get his dream off the ground. Right? Because banks weren't really helpful back then for 1 thing.
And Taren Aaron's book, woman's places in the Brew house is a great book to read more about the new A Brewing, company and also Natalie russian rivers in there and actually renee in there as well, and also a book called the audacity of hops, which reads like a who done it. It's despite my favorite book on brewing history besides tara. And that is also a great 1 talking about some of Jackson said street. Did did they talk to, like, you about it? Or
Was Jack pretty? Yes. I was in touch with Tom, the author of Audacity. Right? Get Ace tally. He was out of Boston, I believe, and we correspond during the time he was writing that book, and I put him in touch with Jack. And he talked to me as well, and I'm just a little footnote in it, but it's all about Jack and the history and what he did. Yeah. And then in the woman's spaces in Brew house brings up the some of the un the un sung women of beer, including Susie Stu Down and Jane
Zimmerman as well. So John, you're gonna be at the Beer fa Saturday as or to it. Absolutely. So come down. It's not a big beer festival. It's an intimate beer festival. We're gonna have some cider tilted head cider till from Ellen C valley. She's given us cider for it. We're gonna also have, some meat as well from hard high works
meat as well as some breweries. But it's more about this historic k tapping, meeting Renee, Dawn Barclay, Brian Hunt gonna be their point, Vin and Natalie you're both gonna be pouring. Oh, you're the See them again. Is that cool. Finally you're gonna go to work. And it's a Saturday. So this is not, like, you know, we... Like, we really appreciate besides the sponsorship. I'm I'm... I'm... I'm I'm a volunteer for doing having done all this for the museum, but, I'm saying we, but
it's pretty cool. So we're gonna have Brian Hunt, and then Bruce Callum from Come Brew house is gonna be actually milling around. If you remember those days as well, which I do. I don't you know Steve J as well. But it's gonna be so cool. And it's really an expensive can still come in, I... And, you know, buy tickets there at the door, bring your Id and, park across the street, get or better yet, get a designated driver, Uber or lyft. You could take the smart train up to Downtown
Santa Rosa and take it... You could actually even walk over from the train station to the museum. That's how close it is. So if you take the smart train up, that's a great thing to do. But I am so excited to have you guys both there. Don't forget about on Wednesday, it to also go check out Retro Brains Instagram and Facebook page about their drag race scars. Yeah. And new A and Brewing company has a Facebook page and Twitter or x if
you wanna call it them at daughter. And the brewers daughter, you can follow me at the brewers daughter her on Facebook and on x as well. Please do your memoir Renee because if there's so much more daughter to this story of how she found that Jack Mc macarthur, is the founder of the craft brewing revolution in America was her father And what were you doing at the time? Weren't you mark in marketing? Like, I was working at a television station? Okay. When
I found him... Wow. Amazing... Is Renee D luca. New A and brewing company. And Don Barkley, our great friend is back with us. Yeah. Yeah. Good to see you, Both my pleasure. Great to meet you.
