A Funeral Message for Peggy Decker by Bret Hammond
What do we do when God doesn't answer our prayers? How do we respond when God says, "No"?
We live in the microwave generation, but you can't microwave prayer. What happens when praying means waiting?
God doesn't play fair when it comes to prayer.
Jesus teaches us to pray, "Deliver us from evil." Paul calls us to be prepared for "the evil day." What does prayer do when things are at their very worst?
We pray those words, "In Jesus' name," but what does it really mean? They aren't magic words that guarantee our prayers will be answered--they're something far greater.
Prayer is encountering God
How do we know God is listening?
When the disciples wanted to know how to pray they looked to Jesus. We continue to look to him today for our understanding of prayer.
For many people faith begins with a simple invitation.
God wants the pleasure of calling you his own.
Worship means putting God first in our hearts.
Focusing on God in the present brings the promise of peace.
When we put God first everything else falls into place.
Even when everything is against you, God has equipped you to thrive anyway!
We thrive best when we thrive together.
1 Peter 4:12 says, "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you." None of that sounds like good news, does it? But it's life--it's the reality we live with. We can't deny that pain comes all we can do is find a way to turn it into something that will glorify God.
What happens to our world if the Church fails to thrive?
When we thrive in our faith together people notice.
There is perhaps no place more essential for our faith to thrive than in our families.
How do we thrive when life isn't fair?
The way we live out our faith can change the lives of people around us.
Do we crave the things that God craves for us?
Chaos doesn't make appointments. It comes into your life unannounced and uninvited and turns everything upside down. Whatever you hold onto in those moments better be solid enough to get you through. This is why Peter starts off with the words, "Prepare your minds for action."
My baccalaureate sermon for the Kansas High School class of 2015
"I'm trying to thrive." What if it's not about us trying, though?
Genelle passed away at 100 years old. She was an amazing lady and it was an honor to speak on her behalf.
Peter's call is for a faith that allows us to not merely survive in this world but to thrive!
We know gossip is wrong but we wink, giggle and tell it anyway. Reading through the Bible, though, God never winks or giggles when he talks about gossip. He takes it seriously. Why? Why does God not tolerate gossip and why shouldn't we?
In Jesus' final words we find the answer to our greatest need.
