Episode description

It’s so easy to focus all our energy on work, but I’ve realised that strengthening other areas of my life is just as important for building a successful brand. So today I’m chatting through two personal goals that I’ve set for myself this year that have nothing to do with my business, yet I know they’re going to have a huge, positive impact on it. I’m not saying you need to do exactly what I’m doing, but I hope this gives you a fresh perspective on how your passions and personal growth can support your business in ways you might not expect.

What I cover in this episode:

  • Ways that creating goals outside of business can help to prevent burnout
  • How world-building in a novel is parallel to building a brand
  • The role of storytelling in brand building
  • Lessons that I’ve learnt since starting to train for a marathon

If you aren't grabbing people and you're not helping them understand your brand world, then we need to do some work. One, two, three, four. You're building a brand online. You've got wild AF dreams. You know you've got the potential to grow your biz into something pretty dang incredible, and you want to do it all the right way.

Hey, I'm Alex, your brand bestie, and this This is Brandology, the podcast that feels like a coffee chat with a biz friend who's giving you all the tips and advice on growing your brand, because that's what it is. We're talking strategy, design, content, messaging, and more. So if you're ready for no BS brand advice from someone who's done it all before, this is the pod for you. Let's get into it. Hello, hello, and welcome back to another episode to Brandology. Thank you so much for joining me.

It's always such a pleasure to sit here and chat with you about branding and business. I don't know if you can tell from my voice, but I have been sick. Again, I actually can't believe it. It's my third time being sick in four months. I don't know what's going on. Thankfully, this one wasn't as bad as the last two that I got, but it still took me off my feet for quite a few days. And I'm now on the other side of it, which is great, but it does mean that my throat is still a bit dry and funny.

So I'm going to try and keep this episode a little bit shorter so then I'm not coughing in your ear because that's not going to be pleasant for anyone. But yes, it's Honestly, to be totally honest with you, it's been a bit of a rough start to 2025 for me. It's not the start of the year that I wanted to have, but I am trying to not let that affect me because it doesn't really matter whether it's the start of the year or just a random month in the year.

I think we all put a lot of pressure on the start of the year. If we have a bad beginning to the year, it means the rest of the year is not going to be great or it dampens our perspective on the rest of the year. I don't want to think like that. I know it's easy to get into that headspace. And honestly, a lot of the people I've been speaking to have also had a rough start to 2025. So if you're listening to this and you're like, same, you are not alone.

So now we're into February and I'm really wanting things to pick up and I'm trying to actively work towards things picking up as well. I've had a lot of stuff happening in my personal life and then I got sick on top of that. And I just had all these other things happen. My dog chipped my tooth. This is completely off topic. So apologies if you don't care, you can just skip ahead a couple of minutes.

But one of my dogs, well, both of my dogs, they playing together, and I had my head down near where they were playing. Then one of them flung their head back into my mouth. I honestly thought one of my teeth had been knocked out. I was in that much pain, and I was so scared. I was like, Oh, my God, one of my front teeth. One of my two front teeth is going to be gone. Thankfully, it wasn't, but I did have this huge chip taken out of my front tooth, and I looked like a pirate.

I was bawling my eyes out. I was like, Oh, my God, my tooth has been chipped. This has never It happened to me before, ever. I had to go get that fixed at the dentist. They put a filling in, and it all looks good now, but apparently, I can't eat apples and crunchy things with my front teeth anymore. All the filling can just come out and then the chip will be back. So that's not ideal. But I am really grateful for how my teeth look totally normal.

You would never know that I had a chunk taken out of my front tooth. But golly, it was painful. It was a whole thing. So that happened. And then I got sick and it just felt like one thing after another at the start of this year. So that's my little sob story update, and I'm going to have to clear my throat, so I'm going to just pause this. Okay, I know that I didn't even need to say that because you wouldn't have known if I did that anyway. But I feel like we've got chatty vibes today.

And that's what I wanted this episode to be. I do want to have more of a chit chat with you, more of a personal chit chat. It's still going to be related to branding because basically I'm going to be telling you about two things that I'm doing this year that are not related to my business at all, not related to branding. But I am 100 % positive that these things that I'm doing are going to impact, positively impact my business and positively impact how I'm building my brand.

So that's why I wanted to chat about this with you, because it's not always about what we're doing directly in our business. Like, yes, that is obviously a huge part of it. You can't just sit there, do nothing and expect things to happen. You do have to actively work in the business, but we can strengthen parts of ourselves outside of our business, which will in turn help us in our business.

So I'm not saying you have to go out and do these things that I'm going to share with you, but I just want to show you this perspective of, how can you use other areas of your life and other passions and other hobbies that you have to help actually strengthen your brand and create a more successful business for yourself. So it's a little bit more chatty vibes. That's how this episode is looking.

So one of the things that I thought about when this year started was that I needed to set some goals and have some things that I wanted to work on and achieve outside of my business, because I think one of the issues that I've had over the last few years, well, not issues, but it's something that I don't think is healthy long long term, is I just had too much of a focus on my business. All my energy went into that.

And I'm still going to put a great deal of energy into it because I do want it to continue to grow. But pouring everything into it is a good way to become burnt out. And that's obviously not what any of us want. So I was like, Alex, try and set some things, some goals and things for yourself that are outside of that. And I did that. And I've started working on these additional goals.

And that's when I realised, oh, my gosh, what I'm learning and what I am improving on with these additional goals will really, really help me in business. Okay, so enough beating around the bush. The first thing that I'm doing is I am writing a novel, a fiction novel. Okay, so this is not business-related, has literally nothing to do with branding. It is a fiction novel, and it is in the fantasy genre. So it is very far removed from our reality.

And it might seem a little bit random, but I have always wanted to write a novel. That has always been a goal of mine. Since probably the age of 11 or 12, I started writing at that age, and I wrote a lot of fiction, and I started a lot of books, from the ages of 11, probably till 20, I started a lot of novels, but I never finished any. And I just had so I have any ideas, and I love writing, and I love reading. So it was all just very natural to me.

And that's a big reason why I do love copywriting in my business is because writing is something that's really important to me, and communicating, and being able to create magic out of your words, essentially. And just because copywriting in your business is not made up, it's not fiction, it doesn't mean it has to be boring. It can be fun to read, and it can create emotion, and you can create worlds and you can create characters and things with your words.

And that is the difference between good copywriting and average generic or bad copywriting, in my opinion. So there is a bit of cross over there. But writing a novel has always been something I've tried to do and failed, I guess, to do. But this year I was like, I have this great idea for a book that I want to write.

So why not put that on my vision board as something that I'd love to achieve, a finished manuscript, I'm not saying it has to be published or anything, just a completed first draught manuscript of this novel. And it's going to be a big job. So this is definitely a side project that I'm doing in the spare time that I have. It's going to be like 100,000 words, so quite large.

And the reason why I wanted to talk about this one in particular is because as I've been writing it, it's actually been quite a few years since I've written anything fictional. So this was dipping my toe back into something that I was once very, very passionate about. And as I've been writing it, I've been like, oh, my gosh, I can really see the parallels from this to what I'm doing in my business and how I'm building my brand. And it has been really interesting to see that overlap.

So one of the things being, obviously just creativity, I think having a separate space where you can be super creative. For me, it's creating this fantasy world that doesn't exist and magic systems and all that thing. So having a separate place where I can just be super creative and there's no limits, literally no limits, that has been so helpful to me in terms of re-sparking creativity in my own business.

So I think that can be helpful is you can be super creative in your business and you don't have to be a creative. You don't have to be a designer or anything like that to be creative in your own You have every right to be creative, and I want you to be creative. But I think sometimes it can help to have that external outlet.

So whether that's like sewing or dancing or writing, anything like that, like anything external even gardening, whatever it is that gets you feeling a bit creative, that can really help to spark or re-spark your creative juices in your own brand. And you need that creativity in your own brand, I feel, in order to continue coming up with new ideas, writing things for your audience, content pieces, or coming up with services or tweaking existing services.

That's not to say you have to continuously be doing new, new, new stuff in your business because you absolutely don't have to do that. And I don't recommend that. But if you're not feeling creative and inspired with your own brand, we're going to have problems. We are going to have problems because you really need to be in love with your own brand before anyone else can be in love with your brand.

And one of the best ways I think to do that is by having an external source of inspiration and creativity that you can draw from. So then you're feeling inspired and ready when you jump back into your own brand to work on that, even though they're totally different things. The other thing that I have found in terms of writing this book, I'm not very far into it because I only started it at the start of January. But one of the other things is world building.

And basically, Basically what that is in terms of writing a novel, and particularly a fantasy novel, what I'm doing is creating a world in that book that doesn't exist. It's a different world. Things function differently. There's magic, there's things that don't exist in that world. I have to get my audience and my reader of that book to understand that world and feel like they're living in that world, even though it doesn't exist.

So basically what happens at the start of a book is my reader is getting plunked into the middle of this world. They don't know what is going on. They don't know who anyone is. This is their first time reading this. So it's my job as the author to help them understand. To help them understand where they are, what's going on, who's who. I want them to have such a thorough understanding of the world without being overwhelmed by it.

And oh, my gosh, the parallel to It's a brand building, it's crazy to me the more I think about it. So you need to have this world building in your brand because it's exactly the same thing is happening where your audience, yes, they know you're a designer or they know you're a nutritionist, whatever it is you do. They've seen your bio, they've seen yours to handle. They have an idea of just what it is you do. But that's all that they know when they land on your page.

That's all that they have an idea of. Other than that, it's literally like when you pick up a book, you read the blurb on the back. You're like, okay, that sounds good. I'll read it. And so your audience is being plunked into the middle of your world when they land on your Instagram for that first time. They don't know what's going on. They don't know who you are. They don't know what you do, really, other than the fact you're a nutritionist.

They don't know about your services or packages, whatever. They just know the blanket she is, a nutritionist. They don't really know what it is that you talk about, what it is that you stand They know nothing at all. So it is your job as the business owner to help them understand quickly and easily without overwhelming them. That is so important.

If we can't world build for our audience and help new audience members understand what it is that we actually do, how we help, what we stand for, what we're all about, who we are, all those things, then we're not doing our job and we are losing people. Because exactly the same way as it works in a novel, if you can't grab your audience, your reader, in the first chapter or 2-3 chapters, even. I'll give it to chapter three.

If you're not grabbing people and they're still confused, they're still bored, they have no idea what's going on still, they're probably going to close the book and not finish reading it. And you know what that means? They're not going to recommend that book to their friends. They're not going to buy the next book in the series. Whatever it is, they're just going to close it. They're not going to come back to it.

So I really want you to think about that parallel to building your brand because your brand is a world in itself. That's how I want you to think about it. You've got your own little universe happening here. You've got your own leader of the universe. That's you, the person that's in charge of everything. You've got your own planets and villages and stuff floating around there, like your service offerings and everything.

You've got your own population, and that's your audience, your existing audience. You've got your own rules that you live by, the things that you stand for, the way that you live your life. Think about how that relates back to your brand and how you build your brand. These are all things that our audience needs to know and understand. They need to feel part of that world. They need to understand what's going on in that world. Do they fit in in that world?

Do they want to even hang out in that world anymore? It won't be for some people. Your brand is not for everyone. So some people are going to be like, not loving this, I'm gone. And that's great. That's perfect because they are not our dream client. Other people are going to be like, oh, my gosh, give me more of this. I'm obsessed. But they're only going to think that if you actually welcome them into that world.

And so through things like your content and your messaging and your visual branding, these are all ways that we world build. But particularly, it's really important with content and messaging, which go hand in hand, because those are the things that are going to help people understand our world more deeply. So if you aren't grabbing people and you're not helping them understand your brand world, probably in the first 5 to 10 minutes of getting on your Instagram, then we need to do some work.

So just for example, like I've said this before, the first thing that people are going to connect to or not are the visuals before they've had any time to read anything. They're going to see the visuals and make a judgement call on that. So if we're aligned with the visuals, amazing, that's when the next step comes in, which is that content and that messaging and how we're speaking to our audience and what we're actually saying. And that's where the world building really happens.

That's where they really get to know what it is we do, who it is that we help, the transformations we create, who we are, all those kinds of things. That's where it really comes in. And if we're not communicating that properly, we're not well-building properly, our audience is not going to really connect with what's going on, or they're going to be confused, or they're going to be overwhelmed, or they're not going to understand. All of these are bad. We don't want any of those.

So we need to world build correctly in our brand. So that was a big tangent that I wasn't meaning to go on. But the other thing with writing a novel that I found is just generally storytelling, which is a really big part of brand messaging. So obviously writing a novel is storytelling.

The whole thing is a fictional story that you're coming up with and you take your audience on this journey and you're really taking them on the main character's journey from their situation at the start of the book to their situation at the end and their emotional state at the start to their emotional state at the end. And your audience is feeling things along the way. Like the reader is feeling all the things as the main character is experiencing and feeling them as well.

So that is storytelling. And we need to do that in our brand. And that is why the... I think his name is Donald Miller. The story brand method works really well. I think I've covered that in a podcast episode. I'll see if I can link it in the show notes.

But it's a very similar concept to what TV shows and novels and movies do, taking that process of storytelling and implementing it into brand messaging, because it's literally the same thing where your audience is going on a journey They're not at the end yet. They're not where they want to be. They're at the start somewhere. They're having issues. They're feeling things that they might not want to feel. They're experiencing things they might not want to be experiencing.

And they want to get to the end point. They want to feel and experience different things, better things. And that's why they're looking for help from you, because you can help them get there. So we need to help our audience understand that we can do that. We can help get them from A to And so that's where the storytelling comes in. We want to take out people on that journey. We want them to feel. We want them to understand that we know where they're at.

And so if we're not evoking those emotions and taking people on viscerals and visual experiences that they can really feel through our messaging and writing, then again, we've got work to do with our brand because that is what really hooks people in and gets them invested in what we do and us, specifically instead of one of our competitors that does the exact same thing, but they're not messaging as well, just as an example.

So we really want to learn to write in our messaging in a way that allows our audience to see themselves as the main character and see themselves as, oh, yes, I'm here. That's where she's talking about. But she can get me here. And she's explaining the process so beautifully. And she's letting me feel and experience a taste of what it be like to be at that end result, even though I'm not actually there yet. And that's making me even more excited to get there.

So we're really trying to create that emotion, create that experience, create those feelings through our messaging and what we're saying and how we're saying it so we can get our audience excited for that next step. Because exactly like in a novel, if nothing is changing and the character, the main character, is not growing and learning and changing from their experiences, that's going to be a really boring book. No one is going to read that. It's not going to interesting.

There's nothing at stake. The character is not going through trials and tribulations and coming out the other side as this improved, better version of themselves. That's really what a lot of novels are when you drill down to the basics of it. And we want to reflect that exact thing in our brand messaging because that's how our audience wants to feel. That's what they want to see from you. Okay, so much for my short podcast episode.

That's My my lesson so far from novel writing, and I'm only a month in, but I can already just see those parallels so clearly to branding. So I hope that's been helpful for you as well. I'm going to move on to my second thing, which is my other goal that I have this year, which is, again, completely unrelated to what I do and branding, but I've already been finding a lot of parallels with. And that is I really want to run a half marathon this year. And And I am not a runner.

I thought I hated running. I've never run. I go to the gym and I do weights, and I love that. But running, I've always been like, Oh, I don't do cardio. Cardio is not for me. I'm not a cardio person. I've literally... Those words have come out of my mouth many, many times over my life, and I think I've just believed it. But I don't know what happened at the end of last year. I was like, I want to go for a run.

And I think I was thinking, I need to work on my cardiovascular health because I want to live a long and healthy life. And I'm working out my muscles, and that's great, but I'm not working out my heart muscle, and that's an important muscle. So I need to do something for it. That was where the thought process started. But I was also like, I don't really run, and I don't think I can run very far without stopping because I'm not a runner.

So I started with 5 kilometres, which sounds like a very long way. And I was like, why are you doing this, Alex? I don't even know why you're doing this. Started in the last week of December. And I really enjoyed the first run that I went on, actually. It was very slow. It was very hard. But I felt so accomplished at the end.

I did the five kilometres somehow, and I was like, oh, my gosh, I just did that, even though it was messy, even though it was crappy, I just ran 5 kilometres, and I'm so proud. So what happened at that point is I joined a parkrun group on a Saturday morning, which is... They're all over the world. There's probably one near you. But it's a free five kilometre group run, basically. And you get a time at the end. It feels like a little race, but it's not competitive at all. You just get a time.

And if you want to race against yourself each week and better your time, you can try and do that. Some people walk the whole 5Ks, but But I've started doing that all through January with my partner on Saturday mornings, and I have enjoyed it so much. There's usually 300 to 400 people that go to this, and we run along the beach, beach running and bike track near the beach.

And I just have loved the atmosphere of all those people running together, all those people cheering each other on, the support, and just feeling motivated. I don't know, it's just really done things for me. And I've been really enjoying running. Never thought I would say that in my life. And I thought maybe I should try and do a proper race just to see how I go. And also because I just love the parkrun vibe so much.

So why not do something bigger, like a half marathon, where where the vibes are even bigger than that. So naturally, decided to sign up for a half marathon in April, which is scary. It's 21 kilometres, and my goal is to run it without stopping. I don't want to have to stop and walk, ideally. I don't have any time amounts in my head. I'm just like, I just want to run the whole thing and I don't want to stop. So I've signed up for that, and as I said, it's at the end of April.

So I've got 12 weeks from the date of recording. And I was like, I need to train for this because there's no way I could do that right now. No way I could run 21k without stopping or probably run it at all. So I was like, I need to get consistent with training. I need to train for this because if I want to see this result, I have to do things in order to receive the result.

So found an app, got a training plan, and it's given me, however many runs each week, I'm doing like three runs a week, and it's increasing in difficulty to get me ready for the half marathon. So I should be able to successfully complete the half marathon in April, which would be such a huge achievement in itself because I never thought I could do something like that. So I would be so proud of myself if I could do that.

But the important thing here is training for it and having this goal that you want to achieve and then putting in the work to get there because it's not going to come out of nowhere. I'm not going to wake up to her and suddenly be able to run 21Ks. I'm not going to be able to wake up in one month and suddenly be able to run 21Ks. I have to put in the work over 12 weeks, minimum 12 weeks, really. In order to see that result. And I have just learned so much already through this experience.

Again, it's only been just over a month since I've started running in general. And in terms of the training for the half marathon, I'm only in the second week of my training for that. But firstly, it's just really reinforced me. Things that I already knew, but sometimes you need to have them reinforced to you again to realise, yeah, that's actually true, and I really need to remember that. Consistency. Consistency gets you results.

So like I was saying, I'm not going to wake up tomorrow and be able to run 21Ks. I have to put in the work in order to see that result in three months time. That is it. That's how it's going to work. I put in the work, I put in the reps, I'm going to see the results. And I just want to loop that back because I needed that reminder in my own business as well, where I need to put in the work in order to see the results that I'm looking for.

In order to achieve the goals that I have, I have to put in those reps to see those results happen. Because with what I'm currently doing, I'm not posting enough on social media right now, and that's not going to help me. That's not going to help me get to my goals. I really need to work consistently on my marketing in order to get the leads that I need to achieve the results that I want this year. And it's not going to happen any other way. And it's easy.

It's like the recipe to success is by doing those things that work and just doing them over and over, even though it feels hard and annoying at the time and you maybe don't want to do it. And no, you're not going to see results instantly. You were not. It's going to happen over time. It's going to take weeks, if not months. And this is what I was thinking about marketing as well, is that it's always... I find it's going to take you about 90 days to see results with your marketing.

So what you were doing three months ago is reflective of the results you're seeing now. So if you want to see particular results in three months, you need to start right now putting those reps in and putting that work in. Otherwise, you're not going to see those results. So that's just something I want you to keep in mind. You are not going to see results after one Instagram post, but you are going to see results after consistent posting. Obviously, there's other factors that come into this.

What are we posting? Are we speaking to the right audience, we're saying the right things. But just in general, the consistency is what is going to get you to those results. And particularly once you already have a bit of a recipe for what's going to work, then it's just a matter of showing up, getting those reps in, doing the things that are required in order to see the results that you want on the other side.

So literally, just taking it back to the half marathon, I just know I don't want to show up on a half marathon day and not be able to complete the race. I don't want that to happen. I want to be able to achieve my goal of finishing it without stopping. And I know to do that, I'm working backwards and I'm starting now and I'm putting that work in because I know that the work over consistently with me showing up, doing the things on my list, whatever the app tells me to do, I'm doing it.

That is what's going to get me to that end result. So that's thing number one. Thing number two is just how you improve at things as you do them more. And these are more business related than just brand related. But it's something that I hear a lot is people saying, oh, I'm not good at talking on camera, for example, or I'm really bad at making reels, or whatever it is that you think you're really bad at. You're not going to get any better if you don't do them.

And if you want to get better at them, if you know that's going to help grow your business or connect with your audience, whatever it is, you do need to do it more. You're going to be bad when you start. And even just the same as starting a business. It's probably going to be a bit of a chaotic mess in the beginning. And you're going to get better as time goes by. You're going to make a lot of mistakes at the start. You're going to learn, you're going to improve.

It's exactly the same with running. Like I said, when I started running at the end of December, I was terrible. I was really slow. I had a great time, but I was not good. And I'm still not good. But already, just by being consistent with the runs that I've been doing since then, my speed has already improved so much. My times have improved so much without even necessarily trying. It's just naturally happened as a result of me practising the thing over and over and over.

So it It just goes to show that if you want to see improvements in areas, if you want to get better at certain areas, you have to just continually show up, continually put in those reps. And then the other thing as well that I'll add with the whole running thing is the grit that you have to develop with running because there are parts where it gets really hard and you really want to stop and your brain is screaming at you like, Stop. Why are you doing this? We don't need to do this.

This is stupid. You can stop, you can walk. And it's a real battle against yourself to be like, no, I'm going to keep going. You're fighting against your own brain, which is crazy. And obviously, I'm not saying fight against actual pain that is bad. But when it's just like, oh, my legs are tired, my feet are tired, or I'm running out of breath or whatever it is, you can talk yourself through that and you can get yourself through that if you have the grit and the dedication.

So if you have goals you want to achieve with running, you You have to push through that. You have to find that inner strength to push through that and move beyond it. Or again, you're not going to progress. And it just, again, showed me in my own business that things can be hard, things can be difficult. Your brain can be yelling at you, take a break or don't bother with that today. And I just want to caveat that with, if you need to take a break, take a break.

But you can usually discern whether you're being just a bit lazy crazy and just being like, I just don't want to post today. I just can't be bothered, versus I'm on the edge of burnout and I can't work today. There's a clear difference. So I just want to put that out there and not trying to encourage you to work harder than you can physically do. Not at all. But there's those times when our brain is saying, It's too hard. Give up. It's not going anywhere.

This is a classic example of, I'm not getting any inquiries. It's been really quiet lately and I'm ready to give up and go find a job, for example. And they're the times when you can either go, All right, I'm just going to let go of what I've built and just go try and find a job. If that's actually what you want to do, absolutely go for it. No shade whatsoever.

But if it's your dream to run your business and you've had clients before and you know that you can earn money with this business, you can get clients, then why are we giving into this mindset and this self-talk? Why are we not pushing through and going, no, I know I can do this. I have done it before. I can do it again. I can persevere through this and come out the other side.

Because honestly, it's the business owners that have that mindset and can really persevere through those tough and difficult times and have that grit to do that, that will come out the other side successful. So just another thing to keep in mind. And as I said, all of that I'm saying with the caveat of Don't overwork yourself and work yourself to the bone and pour every ounce of yourself into the business. That's not the way to go about it.

But it's when you know that you could push harder and you know that if you do X, Y, Z thing, even though it might be annoying, even though it might take some time, that will help get you closer to your goals. Why are you not doing that? Why are you giving into the part of your brain that's like, no, just take today off. Just don't bother today. It's fine not doing it for one day.

Those thoughts are what, ideally, we want to push through and fight through so we can get to that better version of ourselves that sticks to the things they said they would do and shows up consistently and gets those results as a result of that. So that's another thing with running that I have found has really related back to my business. And strengthening that gritty mindset as I've been running has been be helpful because I'm like, I can do this. I can push through when it's hard.

So if I can do that when I'm running, I can do that in my business as well. So it's really been a great learning experience doing both of these things. And I know I've only been doing them for a month, like the running and the writing. But I've already just learnt so much from these experiences. So I'm really happy that I decided to create some different goals this year outside of my business. And I'm not saying everything you do has to loop back to your business, not at all.

But I'm really talking about, can we strengthen qualities of ourselves that will help us in our business? Because that's great. If we can do that, if we can take things that we're already doing and use those to help us in the business that we're creating and the brand that we're building. So that was my long winded chatty-up. I hope that you found some insight in that. And I'll try and take you guys along with bits and pieces of the running journey and the writing journey as well.
