Welcome to brain Stuff from how stuff works dot com where smart happens Him Marshall Brain with today's question, what is the alt F four key do? Alt F four is a special key stroke that's wired into the Windows operating system. You hold down the alt key and hit F four simultaneously. It closes the current window. When you want to close a window, it takes a single key stroke. You might be familiar with some of these key strokes.
For example, all plus tab will let you cycle through all the available windows and jump to the one you select. It turns out that there are several other hand key strokes like alt F four built into Windows. For example, control plus escape will pop up the start menu, and alt plus escape will bring the next window to the foreground. On keyboards that have that little Windows key down near the space bar, you probably know that you can press that key to open the start menu. You can also
use that key with other keys. For example, the Windows key plus E will start the Windows Explorer. The Windows key plus F will start the Finding Files dialogue. The Windows key plus M minimizes all the windows and clears out your desktop. The Windows key plus shift plus M restores all those minimized Windows. The Windows key plus R starts the run dialogue. The Windows key plus F one
starts Windows Help. You can learn about dozens of these special key strokes by hitting the Windows key with F one to pull up the help center, and then typing Windows keyboard shortcuts into the search field.
