Welcome to brain Stuff from house stuff works dot com where smart happens Hi Marshall Brain Between the Space Shuttle and the Space station, it seems like someone is out spacewalking just about every week now. The space suits that the astronauts where are one of the most interesting parts of space walking. A space suit has to do at least three things to protect the astronaut. First, it provides oxygen. Second, it has to keep pressurized air all around the astronaut's body.
One of the problems that the pressure created in early space suits is a balloon effect. Modern suits control the balloon effect by using low pressure inside the suit and a hard fiberglass torso section. The third thing that the suit has to do is control the astronauts temperature in space. It's two d and fifty degrees in the sun and minus a hundred and fifty degrees in the shade.
