Hello, and welcome to boost your brain power. I'm your host, doctor Eric Kaplan. When I was about thirteen years old, I was a very sick child. I was overweight. In fact, the pediatrician called me clinically obese. I had
bad acne, I had low energy brain fog. I was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, and due to my chronic bronchitis, I was put on steroids and antibiotics. The medication made me really sick. Sometimes the cure is worse than the condition. That's how I felt, because even though I had all these other problems, the medication caused nausea, headaches, vomiting. Literally, I would throw up ten times a day. Any exertion, just walking, I would throw up. So I couldn't play any sports because you know, the
gym teacher wouldn't let me participate in intramuros. I would literally throw up for any activity, you know. I remember even Halloween, I couldn't even keep up with my friends, so I just stay at home. I was always sick because of the medicine made me feel horrible and ruined my life. So I had to figure out a way to cure my own bronchiitis without the medicine. Luckily, at that moment in time, my dad was going on a health kick and he asked me to join him to one of his health seminars,
and I was desperate, so I said sure. One of the first things I earned was that dairy was a big congestion of the lungs. So I thought, okay, I got chronic bronchitis. I'm always coughing. Maybe if I quit dairy, that don't get me feel better and I won't need to take the medicine. So at thirteen I became super healthy. The first thing I did was quit milk. I quit cheese, pizza, I quit
ice cream. I literally quit every dairy product butter, yogurt, sour cream, cream, cheese, cottage cheese, any creamy dressings, anything with cheese, anything with milk. It was all gone. And within one month I cured my own bronchitis and I was able to stop taking the medicine. So at thirteen years old, I knew that the body had the hour to heal itself, that we don't need medicine to make us healthy. In fact, the healthiest people are the ones that take the least medicine. See the least
doctors, do the least tests. They don't need anyone to help them because they take control of their own health. But you have to work for it. I started with dairy, but then I thought maybe I could do even better. So then I quit sugar, and I quit food dies quit all the candy. Is a thirteen year old, no chemicals, no dairy. I basically just ate fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds. That was my diet, and I never felt better. I became skinny, my acne totally
cleared. I grew so quickly. Girls started talking to me. I started doing better in school, focus and concentration. I performed better in sports. I started making the all star teams. It was pretty amazing. My whole life changed by eating healthier. Nutrition is the key to your first step in health. And I don't care what your problem is, whether it's a brain problem, a digestive problem, a skin problem, an autoimmune disease. You have to eat healthy. If you have heart disease, diabetes, cancer,
those are what plagues Americans, and it all starts from nutrition obesity. We're pretty much the fattest country in the world. I think this year Mexican took out, or last year Mexico took over, but we're still always one or two, and we have the unhealthiest food. All the food that is banned
in other country is approved in our country. All these food dies our banned in other countries, but they still let us see all that stuff, you know, like the Doritos and the Cheetos, that orange food die gets stuck on your fingers and people licked their fingers. That's banned. The life is say, which is the chemicals they spray the foods with round up, it's called it's banned in other countries not here. Aspartame. The FDA just announced
a couple of weeks ago that aspartame is safe. Aspertain is the artificial sweetener that's found in diet drinks, diet you know, sodas, and diet snapples and sugar free gum and all that crap. All the sugar free diet zero calorie filled with aspartame. They're saying it doesn't cause cancer. They're saying it's completely safe. All the research I've read says otherwise, you'd better be careful. If you want to reduce your chances of cancer. You want to reduce
your chances of having a brain aneurysm. You want to bring down your inflammation. You want to reduce brain symptoms like ADHD. You have to eliminate these artificial sweeteners. You don't want sugar, but you don't want sugar free. If it's sugar free, then they're just replacing the sugar with some artificial sweetener. You don't want fat free. Fat free means it's probably full of sugar. You don't want gluten free. They just use some other crappy glue or
chemical or some type of grain that's not healthy as well. You never see a gluten free apple or gluten free broccoli. They don't have to tell you when it says gluten free, sugar free, fat free. They're just marketing gimmicks. They're trying to get you to buy their product. All natural. Be careful, look at the ingredients organic, Be careful. Organic sugar is still sugar. Don't be fooled into all these labels. If you're truly healthy, you're not even eating anything in a box or a can or a bag.
Anything that's processed, anything that can stay on the shelf not good. I want food that goes bad. I want food that molds, that means it's real. Don't give me the stuff that is packaged. When you're in the supermarket. You have to stay on the outside of the supermo market. All the bad stuff is on the inside, in all the aisles, all the boxes that cans, the bags. You truly want to be healthy, You're only going to eat on the outside, right, Remember I told you
I mostly fruit, fruit, vegetables, not seeds. You know, if you eat fish, get wildfish. Don't eat from the Pacific Ocean. Eat from the Atlantic, Eat Icelandic, Norwegian, Mediterranean. Those are the healthy fish. Eat wildfish, not farm raised. Eat smaller fish, not big fish. Smaller fish, anchovies, sardines, mackerel, salmon, small fish. Stay away from the big fish. The bigger the fish, the more the mercury. The Pacific Ocean is full of radiation from the Japanese nuclear power
plant. They're still leaking radiation over a decade later into the Pacific Ocean. Be very careful eating fish from the Pacific Ocean. So when we eat chicken, make sure it's free roaming, not cage free. If it's cage free, it might be just a bunch of chickens in a little room. It doesn't mean they're free roaming. You want to make sure it's got a vegetarian diet. You want to buy organic. You don't want a chicken that's full
of hormones, steroids, antibiotics. It's ed genetically modified corn. It's raised under inhumane conditions. If you eat a chicken that's anxious, you become anxious. You are what you eat, literally, right, So when we eat the chicken, we want to make sure it's got a good life. It's not full of drugs and chemicals. It's fed a good diet, stress free. Same thing with the fish. We don't want, you know, farm raised fish. They're not gonna be happy. They need to be free roaming,
free swimming. You need to get exercised. They need to have fun. That's the type of stuff you want to eat. Okay, So we are what we eat. Stay away from the boxes, the cans, the bags. We want stuff
that's fresh. So we said the fish, wildfish, the chicken free roaming, the meat, grass fed, organic, no steroids, no antibiotics. We want free in the field. Okay, that's super important. If you eat an animal like a cow or a pig and they are stressed and they're depressed, then you're gonna get depressed. Okay, So make sure your animals are coming from a good source, make sure they're organic, and don't eat
animals every day. That's not the way our bodies intended it. You know, maybe once in a while someone would catch a pig back in the day, think like a Neandrethal. That's how you want to be. The hunter gatherer, mostly gathering fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. That stuff's easy pickings. And then once in a while we got lucky, you'd probably catch a chicken. Come up with a way to get some fish, you know, get a pig or a bore, whatever it is, catch a deer.
There were ways, but that was rare, maybe once a month. Okay, don't overdo it. You don't need animal products all the time. You don't need an animal product every meal. You know, what do people do? Oh, let me have eggs and bacon in the morning, and let me have a chicken salad for lunch, and then a piece of steak for dinner. You don't need that, it's too much. Have a piece of steak once a month, have a piece of salmon once a month, have some ribs once a month. I have a bacon once a month.
I have sausage once a month. I have eggs once a month, half turkey once a month, have fish once a month, half sardines once a month. You get the idea. You don't need to have these all the time every day. What you do need to do is eat each color of the rainbow every day, something that's red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, every single day. Then you're getting all your nutrients. You don't have to count calories, you don't have to see how much
fat you have, how much carbs you have, how much protein. You don't have to complicate it, keep it simple. Just eat each color of the rainbow. Then you won't crave all the bad foods, the sugars, the chips, the candy, the bread, the pasta, the milk, the cheese, the dairy. You won't crave that stuff, the soda, the juices, you won't crave it. If you eat all the colors of the rainbow, then you're getting all your nutrients every single day, and don't
stay away from fat. Fat is very healthy, but you need healthy fat, not the bad fat, not the fat of the steak or the fat of the pork jobs or you know, the chicken fat. You want the you want the healthy fat. You know, like the omega threes and fish. You want. The m olives, those are good fat. You want the avocado, it's good fat. The walnuts where the macadamia nuts, that's a good fat. You know. The flax seeds, it's good fat. The krill oil, it's good fat. The coconut oil, good fat,
healthy fat. That's what we want, all right. The nerves love fat. They're covering what's called a miling sheath. If you have multiple sclerosis MS, the most important thing is to load up on fat that helps your nerves. MS is an autoimmune disease, so you need to increase fat, but you need to get rid of the autoimmune triggers. So there's a lot of autoimmune diseases. MS or multiple sclosis, is just one autoimmune disease. Siliac
disease. That's gluten sensitivity. That's an autoimmune disease, Hashimoto's thyroid ditis thyroid, it's an autoimmune disease. Graves is an autoimmune disease. Show grins. That's dry eyes, dry skin, dry mouth, show grins. It's autoimmune disease. Lupus s l E. Lupus is an autoimmune disease. Rheumatoid authritis, it's an autoimmune disease. Psorias tysts an autoimmune disease. Xamax is autoimmune. Fibromyalgia is autoimmune, rosasia is autoimmune. All these things are autoimmune.
And what does that mean. That means your immune system is overactive. If your brain is overactive and you're stress and you have anxiety, you can't sleep, you might have autoimmune disease as well. So if your brain is overactive, your immune system can be overactive. And if your immune system is overactive, then the body starts attacking itself, can attack the brain. That's MS. You can attack the gut, silliac, tack the thyroid, tashimotos or
graves. You can attack your face and get a butterfly rash that's lupus. Or you can get hives, you can get zoriasis, the skin and the nails get pain, five on myalgia. These are all autoimmune disease. The way to fix autoimmune disease is to eliminate the big six. Dairy's number one. Gluten is number two, corn is number three, soy is number four, coffy is number five, and alcohol is number six. You would have to do that for six weeks and you could reverse autoimmune disease. Most doctors
will tell you it's irreversible. Most doctors will give you immunosuppressence. I am a different type of doctor. I don't prescribe medicine. I am a functional doctor. I'm a functional neurologist. I actual functional medicine. And what that means is we get to the root cause of the problem, figure out why the body isn't functioning, not just treat symptoms with medications or surgeries, but

have sensory problems in your eyes or your ears or smell or taste. It literally maps out your whole entire brain. But there's no radiation. You don't have to do, you know, lying some small tube. You don't have to have any contrast fluid. There's no risk, but it's extremely informative to tell you about all your different brain waves and how your brain is functioning.

So when I was younger, I discovered that early on. Now, as I became older and I continue my education, I realized there was a lot more that needs to be done than just nutrition. Right, one of the most important things that you'll
always here for every condition is exercise. Right, if you have high blood pressure, you need to exercise. If it's really high, you might just have to start off walking. You can't overstrain your heart either. If your brain is overactive and your immune system is overactive, then your heart rate and blood pressure may be overactive. So that means you're in stress mode. Do you guys know that Monday morning is the number one time when people get heart
attacks and stroke. It's the number one time Monday morning because of stress. When you're stressed out, your blood pressure is gonna go out. When you're stressed out, your heartbeat's gonna go a little bit faster. Stress is the silent killer. I don't care what condition you have, stress will make it worse. I see a lot of Parkinson's patients. Stress makes their tremors worse. So when we're taking care of Parkinson's patience, one of the main things
we need to do is to reduce stress. An exercise is one of the greatest ways to reduce stress. So if you have Parkinson's, we gotta start exercising. Boxing is one of the best exerie for Parkinson's patience. Ping pong not so much exercise, but a lot of movement coordination that is very good for Parkinson's patience. Parkinson's patience a lot of times have problems with balance,
with walking with gait. A lot of times their arm won't swing. So one of the exercises you could do if you have Parkinson's it's called the exaggerated arm walk, where you just walk down your hallway, but really exaggerate those arms, bring the arms all the way up to the ceiling. It's very good for vestibular rehab to prevent falls. The most dangerous thing in Parkinson's is false so that you can hit your head and it could be life threatening.
So we have to do a lot of balance exercise. One of the best exercise to do home is the exaggerated arm walk, very good with Parkinson's patients. There's a lot of signs that you could pick up Parkinson's way before even a tremor occurs, and lack of arms swing is one of them. So when I evaluate a patient, I have them walk and I look at how their arms swings. If one of their arms isn't swinging as much as the other, that's an early sign. If you were a toe walker as a
kid, that makes you more likely to get Parkinson's later. If you lost your smell or have a decreased sense of smell, that's going to make you more likely to get Parkinson's later. If you have constipation, that's more likely to get parkinson later. If you have shoulder pain, that's more likely to
get Parkinson's later. When you have all of these things right, you have the lack of arms swing, you get the shoulder pain, you get the constipation, lust your smell, you start getting poor posture what's called camp decormia. You start losing some facial expressions. All these things are going to happen way before the tremor starts. So when I do a neurologic evaluation, I'm able to pick up Parkinson's forty years before a tremor even starts, before there's
even a Parkinson's diagnosis. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so we have to pick this stuff early on. Same with Alzheimer's disease. The memory doesn't start going till forty years after the brain starts functioning at a lesser level. But we need to analyze the brain so we could figure out if there's a problem. Don't wait till your memory starts getting bad to start to work on it. Don't wait till you start to get
a tremor to start to work on your brain. Don't wait till you start to lose your balance or have falls to start working on your brain. Your brain's like a muscle. You'll use it or you'll lose it. So you have to do brain exercises. Now. People understand, Oh, you've got to brush your teeth every day. People understand you have to exercise every day. People understand you have to eat healthy every day. People understand you need
to get a good night's sleep every day. People understand you need to drink water every day. But what we need to understand, even more important than all of those other things, is you need to exercise your brain every day. How many people exercise their brain every day? Pretty much nobody and just doing a crossword puzzle or playing word all or doing some word jumbo. That doesn't mean you're exercising your brain every day. When you exercise your brain every
day. That means you're doing something new every day. If you've done the crossword puzzle before, that doesn't count as something new. You need to do novelty, new activities. It's the most important thing to keep your brain strong. Right. We talked about nutrition, we talked about exercise, but by far the most important thing is Novelty is doing new things, taking on new activities, going to new places, learning new things, meeting new people,
understanding new languages, playing new instruments, learning new skills. I don't care how old you are, but you have to learn new things every single day. If you want to keep your brain strong, you have to do brain exercises. But it's also important. How do I know which brain exercises I need to do well. One of the best ways to figure that is called
a BNNG video mistography or video acylography. And what that does is it measures the different areas of your brain through these infrared goggles that are measuring your eye movements and different directions and speeds and up and down and left and right, and that responds to spin and light and objects over and slow movements and fast movements. It's called a VNNG and it'll tell us hey, is the left brain overactive or is it underactive? Is this area working too hard or is
this area depressed? Is one area not connecting to the other and literally focal which lobe isn't working? And what exercises we need to do so do we need to do exercise that are can stimulate it or do we need to do exercises that are going to lax it. This is a non invasive test. There's no radiation, you don't have to sit in an MRI machine, no
contrast fluids either, there's no risk. It's basically you just wear these goggles that has these infrared cameras in them that are going to measure your eye movements and they're linked to this little red light that moves all different ways and you just follow it with your eyes and it's pretty cool technology. And then you could actually watch the video of the different eye movements and you could see the
different graphs. That's pretty cool technology. And because we always need subject to measurements, we do these tests in our offices because it's good we do these tests before they do therapy. And then if we give recommendations, that can always redo the test. And besides you saying hey, I'm thinking better,
I'm sleeping better, I don't have any more anxiety or depression. Or my memory is improved, or my balance has improved, or my eyesights improved, my hearing has improved, tonitis has gone away, my tremors better, I'm moving better. So before you saying things, we could literally have the scientific measurements of the speed, the accuracy, the latency, and we measure all these things and remeasure it and make sure scientifically not only subjectively you proved,

Now we got to talk about oxygen. Oxygen is everything. Oxygen is life, and
bad stuff do not like oxygen. What do I mean by that? Viruses they can't live in highly oxygenated states. And what's a virus, coronavirus, herpes virus, right, we don't like those viruses. So if you have highly oxygenated insides, that stuff cannot live. What else doesn't like oxygen? In bacteria, lime disease, Hpylori e coli, all these different bacterial infections, they don't like it. So we need to increase our oxygen levels so
you don't get sick. In our office, we have a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. So people who want to boost their immune system love that, and they're even treating COVID nineteen in a lot of hospitals these days. With hyperbaric oxygen chambers. You know, there's a lot of cool research going out, and
you know it's like, is it guaranteed to heal you? No? of your chemicals. Get rid of those food dyes, and get rid of those preservatives, and get rid of the pesticides and herbicides that we eat every day. Get rid of all the chemicals, all the plastics, plastic water bottles, the plastic storage containers, the plastic food containers. Get rid of the plastics. Get rid of the non stick, the teflon, you stainless steel cookware. That's it. It's the only healthy one. Get rid of
all the bleaches and the cleaning fluid. Start using vinegar and lemon and baking soda. You can find cheap, effective stuff that will clean and disinfect used lemon and tea tree oil. There's a lot of cool natural disinfectants, coconut oils and natural antibiotic There's so much natural stuff out there. Get rid of all the toxic chemicals. Get rid of all those makeups and nail polish and
hair dyes and mescara and eyeliners and blush and all that stuff. Get rid of all those lotions, Get rid of that all those chemicals on the suntan lotions and sunscreens. Get rid of all this stuff that's supposed to make your skin soft. Guess what, All these motions that are meant to make your skin less dry are full of alcohol because they want you to keep buying it over and over. Alcohol dries your skin out. So it temporarily makes your
skin nice and moist, but then it becomes dry. Then you use more lotion, then it becomes dry, then you use more lotions. So I love this lotion. You don't realize as the lotion is making you more dry. Get to the root cause maybe you have autoimmune disease like we were talking about before, and you've got to get rid of those Big six. Get rid of all the chemicals you don't want cancer. Clean your water, get a filter, don't have fluoride in your tooth baste, don't use aspartame.
Don't use toxic suntan lotion, the most toxic chemical that causes cancer. You think you're pretend acting yourself with cancer with sunscreen, suntan lotion. Those are probably the most toxic chemicals you can put on. Use zinc oxide instead. If you're gonna be out in the beach all day, but you need vitamin D the sun protects you. You've got to use the sun. Go outside during sunrise, so that your body wakes up, stimulates cortisol, testosterone.
Get your body gone. Gives you energy. You don't need a cup of coffee. You need to go outside during sunrise. Go for a walk, go for a run, through some meditation, through some breathing. In the sun every morning. Get that sun. It gives you power. Don't be scared of the sun. It's gonna give you health. Flowers would die without the sun, Vegetables would die without the sun. Animals would die without the sun. Humans will die without the sun. We need the sun. The
sun gives us life. Oxygen gives us life. That's why we need clean air. Water gives us life. We need clean water. You've got to be careful. There's the nuclear power plant up in Westchester, Indian Head or Indian Point. They're dropping nuclear waste in the Hudson River. They're allowed to do that right now. We need to protect our water. We need clean water. Clean water is how you get health. Everywhere. All disease that's
been around the world forever was fixed with clean water. And it's only the countries that don't have clean water that still have a lot of these horrible diseases. So if you want to help these third world countries bring them clean water. They don't need medicine, they need clean water, clean air, clean
food. That's what they need. So when China and India there, you know, it's like we could do America and try and do all this stuff to clean our air, but we need it where these all the people are in Asia because it's the world's air, and it's not just country air, it's the world air. We need everyone to work together, so we need to help. You know, India and China get the clean air. We
need to help these countries in Africa get clean water and good food. You know, the way to help the world is through clean air, clean water, clean food. That's the big three, all right. So remember use the sun. Go out during your lunch break too. Just get twenty minutes. Take off your glasses, take off your hat, roll up your sleeves, roll up your pants. Get some direct sunlight just for twenty minutes on your skin. Maximize your vitamin D. Now at night, you want to
walk outside during sunset. Maybe take the dog for a walko with the family, go by yourself, go outside during sun set so that your brain says, okay, it's time to relax. And it increases melatone in it decreases cortisol, which is the stress home own. Then when you come back, turn off all the lights. Just keep one little desk lamp on, turn off your electronics, the TV. Because that means if your brain comes in at night and sees all these lights, it's going to increase cornosol. That's
gonna interrupt your deep sleep. That's gonna ruin your energy, and it's gonna ruin your digestion. It's gonna it's gonna create more stress, more anxiety. So we gotta turn off the lights, turn off the electronics, don't eat at night. That helps your brain relax and calm down. Now you can learn a lot more information.
