I'm your host, doctor Eric Kaplan. June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. Now what does that mean? Do we want to be aware of Alzheimer's, aware of the brain or do we actually want

to work on it? Do you want to make it stronger? Don't believe the lie that people say, oh, my memory gets worse with age, or oh my uh just get a little bit more joined pain, and my knee hurts just because I'm getting older, my back hurts. Oh I'm just just get older. It's just old age. That's a lie. You know your vision, the eye. Doctors say, oh your eyes just get worse

with age. It's not true. Everything can improve your energy, can improve your sleep, can improve your memory, can improve your vision, can improve your circulation, can improve. But you've got to work for it. People don't work for it as they get older. When you're younger, you're working for it. You're using your brain, you're exercising, your socializing, you're doing new things all the time. When you get older, you get stuck in a rut. You become a creature of habit. But that is not

good for your brain. The brain hates if you do things over and over and over again. You need to change it up. Go to new places, do new activities, meet new people, learn new things. You want to prevent Alzheimer's. You want to improve your brain function. You want to get better memory and focus. Then you got to use your brain. You use it or you lose it, and it's not using your brain. If you do working every day and it's the same work, or you do a

crossword puzzle every day, it's the same type of thinking. Yeah, you might be really good at the crossword puzzle. You might be really good at your job, and your memory might be good at your job, but outside, your memory is not so good. Sound familiar because you've been doing your job for so long. That's why you're good at it. But you're not using new areas of your brain. You're not creating new connections, new synapses. It's called neuroplasticity. You can rewire your brain, and I don't care

if it's been damaged for twenty years. You can reverse it. It might take time, it might take a lot of effort, but you can make it stronger, just like you can make your muscles stronger. You're not going to become Arnold Schwarzenegger the first day at the gym. But what you have to do is work out every day, over and over and over again, month after month, year after year, and then you start to see the results. How many years have you been challenging your brain? Well, I

would say after high school or college, people stop challenging their brain. But we're so jealous of kids. Oh, their brains are so good. They absorb it like a sponge because every year they learn new things. You have to start learning new things, novelty. It's the number one most important thing for Alzheimer's disease now, as far as the two most imports for improving your quality of life as you get older. And we know this from lots of

studies that have been done with centenarians. Centurians are people that live over one hundred years of age. But they interviewed healthy centenarians, not ones in the nursing homes and the diaper and the wheelchair. What they did was went to healthy, independent centurions and they just surveyed them, Hey, what do you do? What makes you healthy? Why do you think you live so long?

The most common answer is out of all the centurions in America, and this is in America because it's different, you know, when you go to these blue zones and different countries and stuff. But the number one most important are the number two most important things right. Number one is they don't eat foods with preservatives. They don't eat processed foods. Everything is holistic, it's natural, it's picked that morning. Everything's fresh. The things in the boxes

and the cans and the bags that they're around for a long time. It's no good. If your food ain't molding in a few days, shouldn't be eaten. Should mold right. If you have food that could, you know, be around for four weeks, that's not good. If you have food that can be around for three weeks, that's not good. These non perishables not good. Stay away from all the processed foods. Eat everything fresh like

they've done for thousands of years. You want to live as close to these hunter gatherers as possible, who are out in the sun, exercising, breathing oxygen, playing running around, just eating fruits, and vegetables and whenever they could catch and hunt. That's the way to live. This new way of living is not healthy. Why we have so much heart disease and cancer and

diabetes and obesity and Alzheimer's disease. None of that is normal. That's all new, and it comes from all these processed foods, all this sedentary lifestyle, all this Wi Fi and electronics and smartphones. These smartphones are making us stupid. It's called digital dementia. The more you rely on the phones, the weaker your brain becomes. The more you rely on Google and YouTube, your brain is dying off. It's taking all your energy. It's like the

matrix. It's using your brains to create these ais, these computers, virtual reality, and then they're gonna take over. It's like determinator. This is no joke. We gotta put a stop to AI. You gotta go back old school, unplug. You gotta get rid of all this five G and Wi Fi and smart devices. It's destroying us. It's destroying our brains. It's making us unhealthy and stupid. I want to be healthy and smart, So you gotta be the one percent. Don't be the ninety nine percent.

You do what everyone else does. You're gonna end up like everyone else. If you're the one percent, you're gonna be that healthy centurion with a high quality of life, who's not in any medication, unsee doctors, happy, stress free, no worrying, spending time with the kids, the grandkids, the great grandkids, and so on and so forth. That's the life you should be living, not in some nursing home, sitting on the couch watching TV, having to get wheeled around, having to get washed you and have

a normal bowel movement or pee. That's not the life I want, and I don't want that for you. I've seen it too many times. But if you want the one percent life where you're happy and healthy, you got to do things that nobody else is doing. You gotta eat real foods. You got to exercise every day. You got to drink halfier body weight and ounces of water every day with pinkmelay and salt on an empty stomach. You

have to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night. The best way to do that is to do intermittent fasting, where you eat from ten am to six pm and you sleep from ten pm to six am. You sleep when it's dark at your circadian rhythms. Go to bed at ten every single night. You need to do breathing exercises. Inhale for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, and exhale for eight seconds. You need to make sure you get some good oxygen producing plants. Spider plants, snake plants,

alo vera plant, money plants. It's like getting your own air purification system. Put them all together so they can talk and chat and they could be social. Plants or like human thing need to be social. You need to be social. You to You need to keep your brain strong. You need to hang out friends and family. The grandparents that spend the most time with the grandkids are the ones that live the longest. All right, Remember we're

talking about centurions. The first thing that they do is eat foods with no preservatives, no chemicals, no pesticides, herbicides, all holistic, organic, natural foods, eating all the colors of the rainbow. The second thing that all the healthy centurions, the most common answer to living a long, healthy life is to walk every day outside. Go for a walk, go with your spouse, go with your friend, go alone, go with your dog.

I don't care, but go outside every day The best times to do it are sunrise, sunset, and in the middle of the day when the sun's strongest between twelve and two Those are the three best times to walk outside, all right, and that is the most common factor to improving your quality of life so you can function better, feel better, and live a better life. listening to boost your brain power. The two most important factors to living a long, healthy and happy life. Number one is eating foods with no chemicals, preservatives, unpackaged, unprocessed, holistic, natural, organic, fresh food. Verer two is going outside for a walk every day. Those are the two most important factors to living a long, healthy life. Now to improving your memory, there's other factors that are important. Novelty, which is the

new things that's for your memory. If you want to improve your memory, you gotta do new things every single day. If you have anxiety, the most important thing to do is distract yourself. Stop ruminating, change the subject, change the scenery, get out of the house. Stop talking to whoever you're talking to. Get out of that bunk. You can't talk yourself out of it. Can't be like, all right, calm down, just breathe, relax, you're gonna be okay. No, that doesn't work. You

gotta do something completely different. You gotta distract yourself. So the key to memory is novelty. The key to anxiety is distraction. The key to depression is progression. The key to depression is progression. So you got to progress in some aspect of your life. Let's say water intake. We were just speaking about that before. So you're supposed to drink halfier body weight in ounces of water every day. So if you weigh one hundred and sixty pounds,

you want to drink eighty ounces of water every day. Let's say right now, you're only drinking twenty ounces, and you say, okay, I gotta get up to eighty. But I don't want my bladder to explode. My body's not used to that. So you gradually do it. He said, Okay, this first week, I'm gonna go from twenty ounces to twenty eight ounces. Well I add another eight ounce glass there, and then you do that for a week. Then you know, from twenty eight to thirty six.

You know, from thirty six to forty two, forty two, then you go to fifty and sixty seventy eighty. So you know it might take a couple of months, but you work up to that. The key with water is bringing on an empty stomach. Don't drink with your meal or after your meal. You want it to get absorbed. So the best best way to get absorbed as an empty stomach and to put a pinch of pink Himalayan salt that'll take the water into the cells. You don't want to drink water

and then just pee it out. That's no good. The salt of the minerals helped to bring and hydrate all the cells. Your brain. What it's dehydrated is like a grape that shrivels up into a raisin. You want your brain to shrivel up and shrink better, stay hydrated. It's important. Coffee dehydrates you. So if you drink coffee, you have to add another glass of water for each glass of coffee. Coffee is a diuretic. It's not gonna help with your hydration. You might think it's helping with your brain,

but no, it's fake. It's like a drug. You want your brain to function with just natural food, nothing processed, right. You know much processing occurs to get that coffee into Starbucks. You know much processing occurs. You know that cup from Starbucks and other areas. There are these plastics that that the heat from the coffee it leaks into these plastics. When you're drinking these from out of these coffee cups, you're drinking a lot more than just

coffee. To be careful. So many toxins out there. The more you eat out, the more you get food from outside of your house, the worse. And if you buy food that's already processed, it's just as bad. Start thinking old school. Start doing it like they did a thousand years ago. All right, do it like the Amish. Do it everything. There's no preservatives, everything's literally picked that morning. There's no chemicals, very

natural. These chemicals cause cancer. You might even think you're eating healthy because you're eating all these fruits and vegetables, but guess what they're full of chemicals. Round up glyfe eshate, pesticides, herbicides. If you want to get rid of those chemicals, when you come home, get a big bowl, fill it up with water, take some baking so huh, and then let

your fruits and veggies soak in there for about an hour. You don't need to do it that long, but you know, might as well, and then you flush it off, wash it off after, get rid of all those chemicals. Even the organic stuff has chemicals. And if you put your not organic foods next to your organic foods, so you gonna be very careful. And even the organic sometimes in the supermarket. They're spraying cleaning stuff around

there. You know, you get in the supermarket, you don't know what goes on during even when they take it out of the boxes and stuff, so you gotta be very careful. The best way to do is just grow your own food, raise your own chickens in your backyard. That's the real way to do it. That's the healthy way to do it. And it's fun. Yeah. You could get a little chick for like two bucks and then they produce about an egg a day. You get free eggs forever.

You know, they just keep going every day, egg egg, egg, egg egg. You get four little chicks, You get four eggs a day in less than ten dollars and you never have to pay for those eggs again. Then you can sell them, even make a business. Grow trees, get free fruit, plant veggies, free veggies. You don't have to pay for it. You got the seeds that you get from when you eat it. To save those seeds and plant them. It's not that hard. Everything

can be free. You can get free eggs, free fruit, free veggies. You get free sunlight. You can get free water. Something needs plastic water bottles. There's water on the earth. It's free. Just get a filter, a high duty filter, filter out everything, not only the bacteria, but all the chemicals, the fluorides, the leads, the aluminum, medication in there, and then for the rest of your life. Water is free. Just use a glass water bottle or a stainless steel water bottle.

The oxygen's free. Just go outside. So easy and cheap to be healthy. Sunlight, oxygen, water, fruits and veggies, exercise super easy. It's not that hard. You know what. Is also easy, though, not to do any of that stuff. So it's very easy to do this stuff, super easy, but it's also super easy not to do it. To just sit on the couch scrolling through Facebook, watching Netflix, getting Uber Eats delivery, facetiming with your friend and thinking you're being social, commenting on

Facebook, thinking you're being social on Instagram. It's not being social. They should call it anti social media. It's the opposite of being social. It tricks your brain into thinking your social Oh are you keep in touch with Joe? Oh? Yeah, just through Facebook? Are you going out with Joe? Did you and Joe go play tennis or basketball? Did you and Joe go for a walk outside, did you and Joe go to the Broadway show together. Experience stuff with people. You know, like we're going camping this

weekend. We invited like five of my kids friends, so they're all their whole families are coming. We got an RV. Some other families rented cabins. Others are tenting out. We're going to this what's called Yogi Bear.

It's a whole campsite. There's a there's a pool, and there's an arcade, and there's a balancy house, and there's hiking trails and basketball courts and tennis courts, and there's a little water park, and there's a little cafe, and there's uh, you know, fishing in lakes, and you know, there's bike trails and you know, the kids are gonna have a blast. And there's gonna be no electronics when I can have our cell phones, there's very poor signals there. We're gonna meet all these new people. We're

gonna do new experiences, We're gonna do new things. We're gonna have great conversations. We're gonna have the campfire, talking around, telling stories. You know, it's gonna be the times of their life and that's what they're gonna remember. When they get older, they're not gonna remember, you know, playing video games in their room, you know, for two hours alone. You know, they're not gonna remember, you know, watching TikTok videos.

They are gonna remember the experience of going camping. Your memory improves with more emotional activities that you have, more experiences that you have. So if you want to prevent Alzheimer's dementia, have experiences and meet new people and go to new places. It's the best way to do it. It can be done. I want you to live that quality of life you deserve, Okay, so that way you function better, feel better, and live a better life.

memory. This is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. And the cool thing is your brain can get stronger through a process called neuroplasticity. You have to rewire your brain. But the first thing is to figure out where your weaknesses are, because you're only as strong as your weakest link. Now, I'm going to give you the secrets to figuring out where the problems are in your brain and how to fix it. To stick around for the end of the show

and I'll let you know all about that. Now. One of the most important things to improve your memory, besides novelty which is doing new things is movement. The more movement you have, the more blood and circulation to your brain. Now, anytime you have pain, you're not getting enough blood and oxygen to the area. So if you have headache, that's not getting enough blood and oxygen to your head. If you have a stomach ache, you're

not getting enough blood and oxygen to your stomach. If you have chest pains, you're not getting enough blood and oxygen to your heart. You have menstrual cramps, obviously you're losing blood because you're having your period. One of the easiest solutions when you're having pain such as stomach pain, period pain, headaches, is drinking water. The more hydrated you are, the easier it is for the blood to flow. If you're dehydrated, your blood becomes viscous like

molasses, and it's not going to move to transport the oxygen. You can check your oxygen levels by getting a pulse oximeter. They're pretty cheap, but they tell you a percentage of oxygen. They do that in the hot hospital. They wanted to do that during COVID nineteen. So you put this little instrument on your finger and it measures the percent of oxygen A good percentage is ninety eight, ninety nine or one hundred. Anything less than ninety eight is

abnormal. Most doctors think it's okay if you're above ninety three. In my office, it's ninety eight. We'll hire expectations. At Kaplan Brain and BAI, we have two offices, one in New Jersey in Emerson, New Jersey, very close to Paramus near all the malls. And then we have another office in New York City in the West Village by NYU Washington Square Park West fourth Street. It's a beautiful neighborhood. Now. Also, what we do

are virtual visits, so we see lots of patients. I have patients in Dubai and Italy and Mexico and Georgia and California from all over the world because now we could do it over zoom. And we're helping people improve their memory, improve their brain function by doing neurologic exercises to rewire the brain in a process called neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity, which is rewiring the brain, can happen in good ways or it can happen in bad ways. You only have two choices

with your health. Either your health's gonna get better or it's gonna get worse. That's it. You can't just keep status quo. Nobody keeps status quo. Now, if I have two choices, better or worse, I want to be better, but ninety nine percent get worse. Now, remember, you don't want to be the ninety nine sent You want to be the one percent who gets better as time goes on, improves their brain function. But you gotta work for it. I'm not the type of doctor that's gonna give

you prescription pills. I'm not gonna do surgeries. I'm not gonna do injections. I'm not gonna give you harmful medications. I'm a minimalist. I want to give you the least amount of medication, the least amount of drugs, the least amount of surgeries, the least amount of testing, the least amount of doctor's visits. The healthiest people take the least medicine, do the least

test, and see the least doctors. And I'm a doctor. My patients are always like, Doc, I don't getting you're a doctor, and you're always telling people not to see doctors. The healthiest people don't see doctors. Doctors are the third leading cause of death in America only behind heart disease and cancer. It's called iatrogenic deaths caused by the doctor. And most of the causes are not mistakes, they're properly prescribed medication. Properly prescribed medication is the

third leading cause of death. How crazy is that? So sometimes the cure is worse than the condition. At Caplin brain and body. We pride ourselves at getting to the root cause of the problem, not hiding symptoms with a band aid. And sometimes the problem is simple. It's not getting enough blood in oxygen to the area. Drinking water could be an easy solution. I

had this medical doctor, a really famous medical doctor. She sees a lot of influential people in New York City, and she came to me with severe migraine headaches. Did her valuation. Few things going on. She had some structural issues, some postural issues. She had some neck problems, she had some circulatory problems. You had some brain issues. But the biggest, most important factor that we found out is shoes dehydrated. Think of your brain like

a grape that gets dehydrated. It shrivels up to a raisin. If you want your brain to shrivel up, well you better stay hydrated. You got to drink half your body weight in ounces every day, and drinking on an empty stomach with pink Himalayan salt. The more water you drink, the more hydration, the better your blood flow. So this medical doctor came to me for severe headaches and look at her blood work. And I looked and I

said, oh wow, this is interesting. The humil glow robin was high, the harmatocrit was high, the MCH was low, the MHC was low. This is all in the blood work and a CBC panel. And when I put all those things together, I realized she was dehydrated. So I told her about the solay water. I told her about drinking an empty stomach. I told her about drinking half your body weight and ounces every day. Long behold. She comes back a couple of weeks later, big smile on

her face, gives me a big hug. She goes back to kaplan. I've tried every headache medication, every my grain medication. I've done botox, acupuncture, chiropractic, physical therapy. I tried herbs and supplements. I tried strong medications, weak medications, drugs, injections. Nothing is work. But after I started drinking water. After five days, my headaches started subsiding, and after a week they were gone. I booked a flight. For the

first time in twenty years, she was able to fly. She literally did not fly for twenty years because of the severity of her migraine headaches, which got much worse on the airplane. And that let me know even more so that she's dehydrated. If you're on an airplane, you gotta drink a lot of water. Airplanes can cause a lot of problems. Dehydration can mess up

your circadian rhythms if you go to another time zone. So if you go to another time zone and you get jet lag, the best way to avoid jet lag is to go outside for the amount of hours that are different from your original flight. So let's say if you go from New York to California

and it's a three hour difference. Once you get to California, you just got to stay outside for three hours and then your body will see the sun or the moon or whatever time it was and readapt to readjust the pineal gland to increase your circadium rhythm function so that you fall asleep at the appropriate time. It's the best way to get over jet lag, lots of water, and go outside for the amount of hours that are difference in your times of

them all right now, headaches can can be cured by water. Menstrual cramps usually are due to dehydration. So if you have problems during your period, and I don't care if it's irritability, if it's cramping, if it's headaches, if it's nausea, bloating water is going to help. And if you drink coffee, you have to drink more water. If you drink alcohol, you have to drink more water. If you exercise, you have to drink more water. But start getting hydrated. And if you don't do it for

your brain, do it for your skin. You want to avoid wrinkles, you gotta drink more water. You want to look good and healthy, vibrant, you need more water gives you life, right, all the simple things give you life, sun, oxygen, water, all the basics. You gotta get outside, though, sitting inside on your couch watching Netflix, scrolling through Facebook is a recipe for disaster. If you want to feel better, function better, and live a better life, you gotta do the work.

Another way to improve your brain function besides getting enough sunlight oxygen, water,

eating healthy food, exercising. Another thing that's important is to avoid inflammatory foods or inflammatory products or inflammation. In general, most disease is caused by inflammation. Heart disease is caused by inflammation. That whole cholesterol bottle, that's a big scampitore where these statins are the most prescribed drug and they make you think that when you take these cholesterol meds and it's gonna prevent you from a stroke.

That's an old theory back from the forties and fifties. Now we we realize how important cholesterol is for your cell membranes. Cholesterol is super important for your hormones, for your diyroid. It's one of the building blocks of your body. You need cholesterol. And then when you take statin drugs or cholesterol meds, you bring down all your good cholesterol. You're gonna ruin your cell membranes and toxins are gonna be able to penetrate easily. Statin drugs lead to

dementia. Statan drugs least to all these joint pain. So not only is it going to ruin your cell membranes, your hormones, it's also going to lead to dementia and pain. Why do you want to take that stuff when

you can heal naturally. You could reverse high cholesterol by eating healthy. Avoiding dairy products, bread products, sugar products, candy, cookies, pastries, cereals, crackers, croissants, bagels, bread noodles, all those grains, all those dairy products, all those sugar products, all the candy, all the packaging. Avoid cholesterol problems. Avoid those foods. Right, So you can avoid cholesterol problems. You could do it naturally. There's lots of natural

products out there too. A lot of people have researched red yeast rice that helps lower cholesterol. I like this product from Apex Energetics. It's called cold Star that helps to naturally bring down your cholesterol. You can reverse cholesterol. You can reverse diabetes right, diabetes. You know, you gotta make sure you don't have juice and soda and coffee and sugar and lots of carbs and bread and rice and potatoes and fried foods, and you gotta get off your

butt. You gotta exercise. But it's all reversible. You know. You can reverse heart disease, bring down that inflammation, bring down that stress. Do some breathing exercises, meditation, get good sleep, eat a healthy diet, so your mental health, your stress, your physical health, your nutrition can all reverse heart disease, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity. It's all reversible. All the major problems in America are reversible. You just have to be

the one percent. Don't do what everyone else does. But how are you gonna know where your problems are? You need to do with thorough evaluation. We need to check your blood work, check your heart rate, your pulse, your oxygen, your gut, how's your stomach acid? Check your balance, your brain. We're gonna give you guys a gift. Well, I'm gonna check all that for you. We're gonna go over your blood work. Which nutritional deficiencies do you have? Do you have a thyroid problem? Do

you have an inflammatory problem? Do you not have enough stomach acid? An absorbtion issue where you dehydrated? You have liver issues, kidney issues, say a problem with your adrenal gland, your thyroid, Are you a knemic you have too much carbon dioxide or not enough magnesia? Or are you low on zinc or vitamin C. We want to check everything be really efficient. Then I'm gonna do what's called a Mocha test. Mocha test is the standard test

for memory. You get a score at a thirty. A good healthy score is over twenty six. If you're under twenty six, that means we know you have a brain issue. I love this test because there's no radiation, you don't have to take any contrast fluid. Can tell you how many patients I see that their brains got messed up from the contrast fluid that they take during their MRIs or
