I'm your host, doctor Eric Kaplan. I hope everyone is enjoying your day so far. We are going to talk about digestion today. How to improve your gastro intestinal system. A lot of people have digestive problems. That might have constipation, diarrhea, You might have pain,

nausea, bloating, acid reflux GIRD. A lot of people are diagnosed with acid reflux or GIRD. The problem is after they are diagnosed with acid reflux or GURD, doctors usually prescribe and acids. And and acids decrease the amount of stomach acid in your GI tract. Now, if you have less stomach acid, it's going to be tougher for you to break down food and your

digestive system will not work as well. So people who have gourd or acid reflux and are prescribed and acid usually will have a difficulty in the future. It could be immune system problems, it could be digestive problems, it could be absorption problems. So a lot of people are prescribed in acids or even take over the counter stuff rolla aids, toms, stuff like that. But that decreases your stomach acid. And when your stomach acid is decreased, then

you might not absorb your nutrient. You might not have get enough iron, you might not get enough B twelve or folate, and it might be diagnosed with anemia. But instead of taking an iron pill or a B twelve supplement, it might be more appropriate to get to the underlying root cause of the problem and increase your stomach acid. If you increase your stomach acid, then

you're more likely to absorb nutrients. If you increase your stomach acid, you're also more likely to defeat the bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungus, mold, parasites, worms, that you're exposed to. The stomach acid, this hydrochloric acid is your immune system defense because as you imbibe or take in some of these bacteria or viruses, this i'm like acid should be able to kill

it right away. However, if you're taking ant acids, now the bacteria can thrive, now, the viruses can survive, the parasites can infect You're more likely to get allergies and autoimmune disease. We want to make sure you don't get yeast infections because what happens is the stomach acid kills off all the bad stuff. So ant acids can actually make you worse. So I typically

suggest increasing your stomach acid. Maybe you need to actually supplement with hydrochloric acid, because if you take supplements such as iron pills or B twelve or folate, if you don't have enough stomach acid, you don't absorb the nutrients, so you're wasting your time and money. Me you're wasting your time and money purchasing these vitamins because you don't absorb them and you might pee them out. If you notice your p is a weird color after you take supplements, you're

probably not absorbing them properly. There's probably a bunch of impurities in those pills, or contaminants or fillers, even food dye preservatives can all be found in these supplements. So what we want to do is avoid making sure we don't have to take ant acids that ruins your immune system as well as your absorption. Now, if you do supplement with an ascids, it's got to be

appropriate. I mean with hydrochloric acid. It has to be appropriate. So if you supplement with hydrochloric acid, it must also have bio in it. The bio is the way the body neutralizes the acid so it doesn't burn your intestinal lining. That's basically like an ulcer, you know, the acids eating the intestinal lining. The bio takes away some of that acid so it neutralize

it so it doesn't have a big effect. Enzymes are also important, so I like apex Energetics because they have hydrochloric acid that has the bio that has the enzymes in it as well. That will boost your immune system and boost your absorption. Okay, that is if you take and acids, So you might have to replenish so you can start to absorb your nutrients so you're not deficient. And the only way to know if you're deficient and a nutrient is

to take bloodwork. Right, So you're not going to take B twelve because you're vegetarian, and you're not going to take iron because you don't eat meat, or you're not gonna take B twelve for energy or whatever it is.

You're not going to take um, you know fully, because you don't think you're absorbing your bees properly, or you're not gonna take um calcium because your bones are brittle, or you have osteope porosis, or you know, you'd only take pills or supplements or vitamins if you're actually deficient and it's necessary. If you're vitamin D deficient, okay, then we might want to supplement with vitamin DATE. However, if you take a dexter scan and you have osteoporosis,

that doesn't mean start taking calcium. That's what most doctors are going to tell you. However, you got to look at your calcium levels. So if you have osteoporosis but your calcium levels are on the higher end, if you supplement, that could cause more problems. Calcium supplements are very dangerous. You have two high calcium confect your para thyroid. If you have two hy

calcium, it can deposit in breast tissue lead to breast cancer. If you have too much calcium, it could even depositing arteries like you more likely to have heart attack or stroke. Can affect your thyroid, your hormones, your immune system. Calcium is one of the most dangerous supplements that we take and don't take it because you're old. Don't take it because you have osteoporosis, don't take it because your doctor told you too. You take it only if

you have an actual deficiency in calcium got it. Never take a supplement unless you're deficient, and you have to check that through blood work. Most people take too many supplements. They think, oh, it's a vitamin, it's natural, what's the harm. That's completely incorrect. Just like medicine or drugs can harm your brain or your body, vitamins and supplements can also affect your brain and your body. So the key is to do a thorough blood work

to see if you have any deficiencies. Right, So, besides not having enough stomach acid, which will affect your gut, your absorption and is a major cause of most nutritional deficiencies, we also want to address bacteria in your gut. It's called your gut microbiome. Now, the bacteria are billions and trillions of different bacteria in your body. In fact, you have more bacteria than cells. Your body is basically a walking bacteria. Now, what do

people do when you get an infection? You go to the doctor and they prescribe antibiotics. Antibiotics are going to kill the bacteria. Now, the intention is to kill the bad bacteria. However, it is very possible that you might be killing good bacteria, and the good bacteria help with your immune system. The good bacteria help with your absorption. So if you've ever taken antibia botics, you have to prioritize taking probiotics. Probiotics are more important because they

are your best defense against the bad bacteria. So if you have an infection, think probiotics. That's going to kill off the bad bacteria. Probiotics help with digestion, Probiotics help with your immune system. Probiotics help with inflammation. Probiotics help with your cells development. And the key with probiotics is to change probiotics every two months because, like I said, there's all different strains and different types of bacteria. You don't always want to take the same bacteria.

It is good to make sure you switch it up every two months you get a different type of bacteria because each bacteria has different types of jobs that they need to do. So we're going to make sure we have a wide variety to function best, field best and live a better wife. This way, you have good gut microbiome. So the two most important things for healthy gut function are hydrochloric acid and good bacteria. The worst things for your gut are

inflammatory foods. Dairy products are very inflammatory, Gluten is very inflammatory. Corn, soy, coffee, alcohol, sugar are highly inflammatory foods for the gut, and they create a leaky gut. And if you have a leaky gut, then viruses and bacteria and parasites and worms can exit out your digestive track, enter into the bloodstream and start attacking your own body, including your brain, your lungs, your heart, your skin, your kidneys, your liver.

So we got to do our best to make sure that the inflammation is down so that your gut, your acid, and your bacteria kill off all the bad stuff. your immune system. So these days, many many people are complaining of digestive problems. You have ulcerative colitis, you've got Chrone's disease, got IBS it will a bow syndrome, you got siliac disease, you got acid reflux, you got CEBO small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, you got gastritis. So there are lots of different gut problems, but they're all related to inflammation, and they're all related to dysfunction of the gastro intestinal track. The gastro intestinal track

gets its innervation from a nerve called your vegas nerve. The vagus nerve is responsible for rest and digest so all those digestive problems that occur might be an issue in the vegas nerve. If you have trouble sleep, being and digestive problems, it's very likely that you have an issue in your vagus nerve or what's called your autonomic nervous system. There's a condition called disautonomia. We treat a lot of patients with this autonomia because they have this problem with your vagus

nerve. If your vagus nerve isn't working properly, you might have digestive problems and sleeping problems. However, it's not limited to that. You might have high blood pressure. A lot of people suffer from high blood pressure as a result of their autonomic nervous system not working properly. There might be an issue in your pancreas. Diabetes comes from an issue in this vagus nerve. I'm working with a pharmaceutical company from Japan who believes they discovered the cure for diabetes,

which is this vagel nerve stimulator. So people with diabetes usually have an issue in their vegas nerve. So as the vegas nerve starts to function better, the pancreas starts to function better, then there's less chance of diabetes. However, this Japanese pharmaceutical company, they're not really aware of how to test for the vegas nerve. They just know they have this vagus nerve stimulator that's

reversing diabetes. And I'm consulting with them to teach them what to check for their pre check there before the therapy and then their post check after the therapy, so they can actually analyze the vagus nerve to see if the vegas nerved improved in function. And if the vegas new improved in function and the diabetes went down, then we know that their stimulator is actually directly working on the

vegas nerve. But to make a long story short, the bottom line is that by working on your vegas nerve, you can actually bring down diabetes numbers. There's two diabetes numbers to look in the blood work. You got your fast and glucose that should be under one hundred idealistically somewhere in the range between eighty five and ninety five, and the other test is called hemoglobin A ONEC

and that should be lower than a five point seven percent. Anything above five point seven is pre diabetic and anything above six is probably close to diabetes already. So those are two tests that will tell us if we are diabetic, and if you're diabetic, that makes you more own to dementia and Alzheimer's.

In fact, they might even change the name of Alzheimer's disease to diabetes type three because it's the combination of diabetes type one, which is autoimmune disease, as well as diabetes type two, which is sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and lots of carbs, sugar, poor nutrition, highly inflammatory foods. So if you want to prevent to mention Alzheimer's, you got to make sure your diabetes numbers are in order, and we could check that through the blood

work. The blood work is so valuable. It's noninvasive, right, there's no radiation. You don't have to slide down in some small tube like the MRI tells us a lot of great stuff how the liver's functioning. Your livers basically your detoxing organ, and you have a called your ast and your alt. If those numbers are above twenty six. I'm worried about the liver. You know, do you have inflammation hepatitis? Do you have batty liver?

Got liver disease. So there's lots of liver problems, most commonly caused by alcohol abuse, drug abuse. You're putting a lot of toxic substances in your body. Then your liver is going to be damaged. Then your digestion is going to be affected. They buio all that stuff, so your liver can handle a lot, but we don't want to overload it or also gets inflamed, all right, So the liver can also be affected by the vegas nerve.

So if your vegas nerve isn't working and you have some of these toxic stuff like alcohol or drugs, you're more likely to get your liver effective. So the vegas nerve can cause high blood pressure, liver problems, diabetes, digestive problems. It can affect your lungs. You might have copd or asthma, or bronchitis, pneumonia, respiratory infections. That's what COVID nineteen is. I personally had bronchitis growing up. I used to wake up every morning lots

of phlagm always coughing. I had to be put on steroids and antibiotics by my pediatrician when I was eleven years old. Twelve years old, I had to take these horrible medicine which made me nauseous, made me sick. I used to throw up ten times a day from my bronchitis medication. So I was miserable. I was low energy, brain fog, fatigue, and most of the problem was not from my bronchitis. It was from the bronchitis medication. So I said to myself, I cannot just keep treating my condition with

medication. There must be another solution out there. Luckily, at the time I was looking for a solution, my father was going on a health kick, and he said to me, Hey, why don't you come to one of these seminars with me. You might learn a few things that can help you. And I was desperate. Even though it was the weekend and I'm like, I don't want to go to more school. What I did do was make sure that I would learn something valuable that can help my health,

because you know what, I was miserable. I was desperate, so I was ready to learn on the weekend so I went to the seminar, and at the seminar, one of the first things I learned was that dairy products are a big congestion of the lungs. So immediately I quit dairy and within one month my bronchitis was gone. I was cured. I did not need to antibiotics anymore. I did not need the steroids anymore. No more nauge and no more throwing up. The side effects of the medicine would end simply

because I quit all dairy products. No more yogurt, no more cream cheese, no more butter, no more milk, no more ice cream, no more pizza, no more macaroni and cheese, no more creamy sauces, no more cheese. It was all gone. Because it cured my bronchitis. Then I was able to get off the medicine. I felt better and I functioned better just by quitting dairy products. That's the worst thing for the lungs. So if you have bronchitis, you have COPD, you have asthma, you

have to get rid of dairy immediately. That's one of the quickest easy ways to improve your lung function. You also might have to address the vegas nerve. Remember we said the vegas nerve helps with your lungs, helps with your heart, helps with your liver, your gut. So what you have to do is vegas nerve exercises. One vegas nerve exercise is to gargle. Goggle really intensely. The louder the gargle, the more activation of the vegas nerve,

the gag reflex. As long as you don't have a history of bolimium, the gag reflex will also stimulate the vegas nerve. Simply doing a big swallow or making humming noises or making noises with your tongue, anything in the mouth, throat, neck area, any type of stimulation is going to activate that vegas nerve. So those are a few things that you can do at home. Each exercise you should do for about thirty seconds, and you want

to repeat it three times a day. That's to activate your vagus nerve, to get you out of the stress node that fight or flight more into a relaxed rest and digest state. That will improve your stomach acid, improve your bacteria. That will improve what's called your peristalsis contractions. To reduce any gut problems that we spoke about earlier in the shell. We want to get rid

of leaky gut, cebo siliac disease, ulcerative colitis, chrone's disease. We can do all that by changing our diet, improving our nutrition, reducing inflammation, improving your vagus nerve function. That will improve your digestion, making sure you have good stomach acid and good bacteria. So we want to get out of that fight or flight more into a relaxed rest and digest state to function best, feel best, and live a better life. More about digestion when

There's a lot of good things you can do to improve digestion in addition to eating healthy, reducing your inflammation, taking care of your autonomic nervous system, and also one of the best things to do is water intake. One of the best things for digestion is water, but not water while you eat. It's water before you eat. You always want to drink water on an

empty stomach. That kind of lubricase the intestinal tracks, makes the food go down an easier, gets the blood flowing, oxygen going hydrate your system, and gives you better feedback to your brain so you don't overeat. Many people overeat because they eat too quickly, but one of the best ways to prevent overeating is to drink water a half hour before your meals. Always drink water

in an empty stomach first thing in the morning. Nice warm lemon water with a pinch of pink Himalayan salt than a half hour before each meal and then also before bed as well, so you don't get dehydrated all night. Helps with the digestion. Then when you wake up in the morning, you should have a good bowel movement. All right, So water super important. You're

supposed to drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day. So if you weigh one hundred and fifty pounds, you should drink seventy five ounces of water every day. I like to squeeze some lemon in there, a pinch of pink and me laying salt to get some minerals. So you don't want to have acidic water, You want more alkaline water. Very very important. Half hour before each meal, half your body weight and ounces. This

helps with digestion. It also helps with brain function. Think of your brain like a grape. If it gets dehydrated, it shrivels up to a raisin. We do not want your brain to shrivel up like a raisin. Or think about your skin. If your skin's dehydrated, you're gonna wrinkle up. So you're gonna make sure you get the proper amount of water, not only for your brain to function and to get better digestion, but for aesthetics for

your skin to look pretty good too. Also, if you ever are giving blood or you're doing a blood test, drink tons of water that morning. That makes the blood come out a lot easier, makes it flow. If you have your period, you got to add more water. If you are working out, you got to add more water. If you drink coffee, coffee is a diuretic that dehydrates you, you're going to need more water. If you drink alcohol that also dehydrates you, you're gonna need more water.

If you have a lot of salt in your diet, that also will dehydrate you. If you have your radiator heat on and you have this dry heat, that is going to dehydrate you. So there are lots of things that you're doing on a daily basis that could dehydrate you. But the good news is the solutions pretty easy. Start drinking more water, just make sure you do it on an empty stomach, and you don't have to do it right

away. So let's say if you're trying to work up to one hundred and seventy ounces and you're only drinking twenty ounces the day you know, this week you go up to thirty ounces, and then the following week you go up to forty and then fifty, and then you know, it might take a couple of months or so, but eventually you get up to that and don't worry about peeing more because when you drink more water, yes, in the beginning, you're going to pee more and you're going to get rid of the

toxins. That's the key. When you have good urination, good digestion, then you're going to detox properly, and water is one of the best ways to improve your urination and improve your digestion. So half your body weight in ounces that is going to help with digestion as well as prevent overeating. Another way to prevent overeating is the food scale. So on the food scale, ten out of ten means if you eat another bite, you're gonna throw up

or you're gonna explode. There's literally not even another way to have one more bite. That's a ten out of ten. That's as full as you can get. Some people say that's like Thanksgiving, where you just over eat so much you can't fit another thing in your belly. That's a ten out of ten. A one out of ten is where you have to eat something right away or you're basically you're gonna starve to death. So one is you're starving, and ten is your belly is gonna explode. It so full, the

ideal number to be at is five. So if you're five, that means you're not hungry and you're not full, you're just perfectly satisfied. So the best time to stop eating is out of five. If you wait till you're full to stop eating, you've already eaten too much. So you don't want to wait until you're full. You want to stop eating when you're no longer hungry. That's a big difference. So what you have to do is chew your food a lot. I mean, I'm talking about over thirty chews.

So you chew your food as much as possible. That slows the process down so your gut can relate to your brain to let you know your full. So you chew your food a lot. Okay, then you swallow. Now after about let's say ten minutes, you know, maybe half your plate is gone. Then you think to yourself, do the scale am I attend where I'm so stuffed I can't eat another bite? Am my own one where I'm starving to death. If I don't eat something right now, I'm gonna die

or pass out. Or am I a five where you know what, I'm actually not hungry anymore. Not only am I not hungry, I'm not stuffed. That's the key. That's the five that's perfect. So if you're a six, that means you overate a little bit and you'll feel it a little bit in your stomach. If you're a four, that means you ate something, but you know what, you still have a little bit more hungry,

so maybe you should eat a little bit more. The best time to eat, you know, it's probably like a two, three, or four. You don't want to wait till you're a one then you'll overeat, or even a two you might overeat. But if you wait till you're a three or four and then you just eat a little bit and get up to that five, then you're perfectly satisfied. So that is a scale. I learned that from my father and his health program that he did, and it works very

well, so I like to incorporate that with my patients as well. His program is called Choose your Body, and you want to really think about how you feel while you're eating, and once you're completely satisfied, you got to stop eating. Don't wait till you're fall wait till you're not hungry anymore. That's a good way to prevent over eating, all right. Now. Another

important part of digestion is to give your gut a break. If you want to digest your food, you need to relax so you're not constantly eating. But if you know, you wake up six seven in the morning, you start eating right away, and then you eat all the way until you know nine ten o'clock at night, you're still snacking. The body hasn't had time to digest. So idealistically, you want to eat for eight hours and you

want to fast for sixteen hours. That's called intermittent fasting. The best way to do that is to eat during the daylight hours, which are ten am to six pm. Ten am to six pm is when we want to eat. We want to sleep from ten pm to six am. So if you kind of do the math there, you're gonna have four hours between your last meal and bedtime. So you're done by six pm and you go to bed at ten, so that means there's four hours from the last food you eat

till bedtime. Then when you wake up. Let's say you wake up at six am, you're gonna wait till ten am to eat, So then there's a four hour break when you wake up in the morning. So the last four hours of the night you're not eating, and you're gonna sleep for eight hours and you're gonna wake up and will not eat for at least four hours in the morning. That way, you're fasting for sixteen hours straight and you're

only eat during those eight hours. And it's also best to eat like a king for breakfast, a prince for lunch, and a pauper for dinner. What that means is, you know you're breakfast and launch are you're really big meals, and your dinner it's going to be a small meal. Because the reason we eat is for energy, So there's no reason to have a lot of food at night when we're trying to sleep. So if you eat food at night that's going to interrupt your deep sleep, then you're not gonna have

enough energy. You're not going to kind of get be relaxed. You're more likely to get stressed or anxious. Brain five troubles with memory, So a lot of people with these brain issues, it's because they're not getting enough sleep. Sleep is key, and the way to get sleep is intermittent fasting. Another good clue to get good sleep is to use your circadian rhythms by walking outside during sunrise and sunset. So if the brain sees the sun go down, Okay, now I know it's time to relax and go to bed.

And then when the sun comes up, okay, it's time to give me energy. I gotta work, I gotta do my stuff, I gotta think, I gotta go to school. So what we want to do is use the sunlight to teach our brain when it's appropriate to be up and when it's appropriate to be relaxed. However, if it is ten o'clock at night, you're eating popcorn, you're watching the news, all the lights are on, you're scrolling through your cell phone, you're going on, the computers on,

the TV's on, the iPads on, the lights are on. The brain's like, hey must be daytime. All these lights are on. I'm eating. I'm going to increase my energy, so I'm not going to get that deep sleep, all right, So we do not want that. So not only do not want to eat at night, you want to turn off the electronics. You want to unplug the blue light stimulates cortisol, which is the stress hormone, which not only interrupts your sleep, but also deposits of belly

fat as well. So we want to decrease cortosol at night by not having food and decreasing light exposure more when we come back from the break. doctor Eric Kaplan. Okay, we're talking about digestion. We're talking about ways to improve your gut function. That is super important. You are what you eat. If you eat a cow or a pig that is anxious, then you're more likely to become anxious. If you eat a fish or a chicken that's depressed because they get put in some cage and they're separated from their family and they're fed upoort diet and raised under harsh conditions, then you will get

depressed. You are what you eat, So it's not only what you eat, but how the animals is doing when it is killed, If it is full of steroids, antibiotics, if it's fed genetically modified corn, if it's taken away from its family, if it's cage in some small compartment where it can't move or exercise, if it doesn't get sunlight or drink healthy water. You know, all this stuff is going to affect how your brain and body function. So it's not only you know what you eat, but how is

that food being raised? Right, you can eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but if they're sprayed with all these chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, gliphosate round up, they're injected with food dyes to make them look colorful. They'd use genetically modified seeds so they look brighter and they grow bigger and their resistance

to bugs. Our bodies don't recognize that. So it's not just what you're eating, but where is that food coming from a lot of people ask me about CBD oil and they say, hey, is that healthy for your brain? When I say, hey, it's from a plant, But what about that plant? Are they spraying it with a bunch of chemicals or herbicides or pesticides and stuff like that. If they're spraying it with all this crap, if they're using genetically modified seeds, right, they're using all these preservatives so

it doesn't go bad. They're adding these contaminants and fillers and impurities, then it might not be that healthy, you know. But if it's organic and it's grown well and all, you know, it's fed the proper food and the sunlight and the water and all that stuff. And raising a good environment. Yeah, then it might be okay, But what's your source? Right, So you want to buy organic foods. You know, if you look at the labels of your fruits and vegetables, there's a number on it,

usually a four or five digit number. If it begins with nine, then it's organic. If it begins with four, then it's conventional. If it begins with eight, then it's genetically modified. So you gotta look at the tag and that will tell you is it organic, is it conventional, is it genetically modified. It's gonna look at your labels. Got to read the food. You gotta see what's putting in your body. Right, So even supplements too. We said supplements can be dangerous. Only use what's necessary.

But a lot of supplements got contaminants and fillers and impurities that could cause more inflammation. Right. So to get proper gut function, we have to eat the right foods. We have to sleep, We got to get in that rest and digest mode. We got to get the proper hydrochloric acid. We got to have good gut microbiome. We have to reverse the leaky gut. So there's lots of stuff that needs to be done, but we can figure

out what needs to be done by doing proper evaluations. One of the best evaluation you could do to figure out what's going on here, it's called a q EG brain mapping. That will literally tell us, hey, do you have intestinal inflammation? Do you have troubles in your brain? Do you have insomnia or sleep deprivation. It will tell us do you have problems with your cortisol levels? This all comes out in the qEEG brain mapping. It even picks up, hey, where you have heavy metal poisoning or did you get

a concussion? Do you have low mitochondrial function, Do you have low ACEEO coline? Do you have anxiety depression, memory problems, troubles with focus, trouble with hormones, trouble with shifting tasks, motivation, brain fog. This all comes up in the q EEG brain mapping. There's no radiation, you don't have to go into some small MRI little tube there, there's no risk. All you do is wear a cap that kind of looks like a swimmer's

cap and there's electrodes that are attached to it. You just close your eyes for a few minutes and it literally measures all your brain waves.
