Hello, and welcome to Boost your brain Power. I'm your host, doctor Eric Caplin. Hope everyone's having a great day today. We're going to talk about how to boost your brain power, how to improve your body's function. Remember when you function better, you'll feel better and you'll live a better life. But it

always starts with function. Most doctors are just trying to hide symptoms with their interventions, which are usually medications. Rather than hiding symptoms, what we want to do is get to the root cause of the problem. One of the best ways to get to the root cause of the problem is to do blood work. Blood work will tell us a lot about where your deficiencies are, how your organs are working, if you have inflammation, if you have nutritional

deficiencies. Whatever the problem is will to be told by doing thorough blood work, not just typical blood work checking per diabetes in cholesterol, but really digging deep. For example, you don't want to just check your red blood cells and your hematocrit and your hemoglobin for anemia. A lot of doctors unfortunate labels say if the homatocrit is low in the blood work and the hemoglobin is low in the blood work, that leans your anemic. And a lot of times

they will just prescribe iron pills. Now, iron pills may cause constipation. A lot of people are an iron deficient even though certain blood tests indicate anemia. Because there's different types of anemia. There's sickle cell anemia, there's pernicious anemia, there is B twelve deficiency anemia, there is iron deficiency anemia, there is fully deficient anemias. There's all different types of anemia's thallas semia minor. I mean, it goes on and on. So you can't just tell

based on one test what type of anemia you have. Now, most people who have anemia isn't due to a nutritional deficiency. For the example, when you're looking at B twelve, so a lot of people who are vegetarians take B twelve because they think they're going to be deficient. However, it is possible to be a vegetarian and not be B twelve deficient, but you have to check your current numbers. However, the scales that most labs use aren't

incorrect. So even if the doctor or the lab hands you back your blood work which says everything's normal, it might not be good. Just because it's normal doesn't mean it's good. And what do I mean by that? Now, when they say you're normal, what they're doing is comparing you to a typical American who goes to the doctor. The typical American who goes to the doctor is sick. Unfortunately, they probably have heart disease, cancer, obesity,

diabetes, liver disease, lung disease. There's probably something going on already before they do the blood work. Now, when they do the blood work, they create the normal scale. But if everyone doing the blood work is

unhealthy, the normal scale is unhealthy. So what I do as a functional medicine practitioner is have a different scale where I'm going to compare you to healthy people, people who don't have a diagnoses, people who are not obese, who have normal blood pressure, who do not have diabetes, who are a thin, who exercise, who eat healthy, who have stress reduction, whom to drink water. Those are the people that we want to compare you to.

Now, normal lads, in reference to vitamin B twelve might have a reference interval two hundred thirty two to one thousand, two hundred forty five pg per abel. Let me read that again. Two hundred thirty two to one thousand, two hundred forty five is the scale, Meaning if your B twelve is two hundred and forty, they're gonna say your B twelve is normal. I have a different scale. I want to make sure you're B twelve as at least four hundred to five hundred. We want to get at least double

what they're saying, which is two thirty two. So we don't want two thirty two. That's too low. We got to double that low end to make it at least four hundred fifty something like that. That's for B twelve. For full late, they just wanted about three mg per amount. But if you're only at four or five, I'm gonna say you're full late is

too low. The scale is different there. I'm looking at a scale from lamp Corp, which is very popular when you look at their iron their scale literally the reference intabal is twenty seven to one hundred thirty nine G per d L twenty seven to one hundred thirty nine. So if you have thirty they're gonna say, you're not anemic. I like my iron above seven B. I don't want it at twenty seven, going to double that at least, so their low end of twenty seven for iron is way too low. They're

comparing you to a typical American, so we want that iron. I Now, if your irons low, your B twelves low, your folate's low, are you deficient in all these vitamins or are you not absorbing properly? So there are other clues, like like a protein albumin globulin in the blood work that could let us know how your absorption is. If that numbers are off, then you're not necessarily anemic, but you have what's called hypochlorohydrium decreased stomach

acid. In America, most people aren't nutritional deficient. We have so much food. Most people ovary. It's not like you're going to be deficient in nutrients. You're not gonna be malnourished. It's not going to be like and some of these stable countries or in starting places in Africa and India where people get scurvy for vitamin C deficiency or rickets for vitamin D deficiency. In America, we have so much food, it's very rare to be deficient. However,

when it's very common, it's not absorbed properly. So if you want to master nutrition, you've got to make sure you have good absorption. You need hydrochloric acid. If you've ever taken rollaids, toms, these ant acids, that's not good because that's going to create problems. So when you're diagnosed with acid reflux or gurd, they're going to prescribe these things, these medications that get rid of your stomach acid. That's why they're called ant acids.

They're killing off the stomach acid, but you need the stomach acid. So if you've taken at acids antibiotics, you've killed off the good bacteria. You've gotten rid of your good stomach acid. So what you'll probably need to do is replenish the acid. When I have patients that need replenishment, I usually recommend HCl prosyde from Apex Energetics. The HHL prozyme not only has hydrochlori acid,

but it also has bioling. You need biole because the biol newt and neutralizes the acid so you don't burn your stomach lining and get an ulcer or something like that. If you do take stomach acid, you got to make sure you do it on a full stomach. You don't want it on an

empty stomach, because you don't want acid on an empty stomach. The acid is designed to have food in your gut, and it's going to help to absorb the nutrients, and it's going to also kill off the bad bacterry of viruses, mold, yeast, parasites, worms, heavy metals, all this bad stuff that we're exposed to. Your gut should get rid of it through

the acid and the bacteria and the enzymes to break everything down. So a lot of people who've been medication have ruined their gut microbiome where they don't have good bacteria. So you might need to replenish with probiotics and not through yogurt because yogurt is a dairy product which causes phlagmed inflammation, bring this function and

autoimmune disease. So you don't need yogurt to get your probiotics. You can just supplement I like the probiotics from player laboratories, And the key with probiotics is to switch them up every two months. You take a different strain of bacteria because we have billions and trillions of bacteria, but we need different types, different strains. It keeps taking the same probiotic, it loses its effect.

So you take one probiotic for two months and then the next two months you switch it to a different strain that's going to help your gut microbiolin. We also might need to supplement with hydrochloric acid and biole for you to strengthen your immune system and help with the absorption. A lot of of my patients who are iron deficient anemia end up taking hydrochloric acid and their iron improves without

taking any iron. It's because they helped improve their absorption. So remember, just because you're homatic or your hemoglobin and your blood work are in low, it doesn't mean you're only iron deficient. It could mean you have B twelve problems. It could mean have fully problems. You could have absorption problems, you could have decreased stomach acid, you could have low bacteria. So we got to really dig deep, and we do that by doing blood work.

doctor Eric Kaplan. We were talking about anemia, looking at blood work, making sure you have enough high dric fluoric acid. So a lot of people with acid reflux take ant acids. However, with acid reflux, it's better to get to the root cause of it. Number we're talking about earlier. You don't want to just take prescription pills to hide the symptoms. That's what

an acids are. But you want to get to the root cause of the acid reflex or the gurd Why are you getting these regurgitations, Why are you getting these sharp pains? How come you can't lay down in the bed without reflux type of symptoms. We have to get to the recause of it. Sometimes we got to reduce inflammation. To reduce inflammation, there's lots of things that can do it. Amma Meal t ginger is very good, rosemary.

These are natural anti inflammatories Omega threes. The two best anti inflammatories are resveratrol, which is found in Japanese not weed and the skin of red grapes, as well as tumeric or Curcuman is the compound that really works well to reduce inflammation. So those are natural stuff that comes from the earth that brings down inflammation. Okay, now what else do we need to look for inflammation in our blood work? There's two tests. There's CRP C reactive protein and that

I like really loud. I don't want it above point three. And you know most doctors saved less than one. That's good, but you know we want to even lower than one virtual or ce reactive protein. If that's I that makes you more more prolant to stroke, heart attack, the heart disease. So you got to be very careful with C reactive protein, highly inflammatory body that numbers too hot. And if you have high CRP, high bad cholesterol, the LBL HI glucose fasting bluecose or hemid globe any one C which

would indicate diabetes, I trigun lycerides, high blood pressure. If you have that, that's what of the metabolic syndrome high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes I CRP, and the other inflammatory marker is high ESR. It's a sedimentary rate, and so we see that with high inflammatory bodies. So if you have high DSR with the CRP ade other stuff is a little high, that's your metabolic syndrome. You've got to take action immediately.

You don't want to wait till you gotta stroke or heart attack. You gotta take it immediately. Start getting on those anti inflammatories, start exercising more, start eating healthier. We had the worst foods that cause inflammation, dairy products, sugar, glow corn, soy, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, medications, coffee, energy, drinks who died, deservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial

flavors. All these things goes a lot of inflammation. So we got to do our best and not but these inflammatory products or foods in our system. If we reduce inflammation, were automatically going to reduce our chances of a stroke or a heart attack. And we could see that in the blood work. ESR and CRP, those are the inflamatory markers. Now, what else is important to look in blood work? You're glucos lavos. You're fasting glucose latins. We don't want those too high. We don't want those too low.

Now, most doctors will say, if you're about one hundred and twenty six or you're fasting glucose and that's measured an mg per d l, that is considered diabetes. If you're under seven B, that's considered hypoglycemium. But that's a wide range. You got to be either under seventy or above one hundred and twenty six. And my range for your fasting glucose is eighty five to ninety five. If you're under eighty five, you have to eat more frequently,

not large meals, but just more frequent. You're over ninety five, you better start avoiding those inflammatory foods, and you better start exercising more. Don't wait till you get diabetes to work on it. Don't wait that you've become overweight or obese to start working on it. Don't wait. If your glucosis high can affect your vision, it could cause no rapathy. Because burning

in your feet or your hands can even lead to dementia and Alzheimer's. They're thinking about changing the name of Alzheimer's disease to diabetes type three because of a combination of diabetes type one and diabetes type two. But if you follow all my suggestions, you're going to prevent diabetes type one, you're gonna prevent diabetes type two when you're gonna prevent diabetes type three aka Alzheimer's disease. So we got to get our glucose levels in order, and our hemoglobin A one C.

We want that under five point seven. The heubi globin A one C measures how your glucose is doing over the past three months, so it's not just recent, but it's accumulated over the past three months. So if you change your habits, we wouldn't expect the heumi globin A ONEC to change until minimum three months after doing all this. The glucose that could change right away after just a week or two of eating healthy, exercising, going to bed

early, doing our vagious nerve exercise. Is drinking the right amount of water that is going to help you out very quickly. All right, Now, Another thing that was want to look at in blowork is your thyroid. The thyroid scale and the bloods ridiculously wide range for lab core. If the range is point four five till four point five for your TSH point four five to four point five. My scale is one point eight to three, So when I measure somebody's TSH, I want it from one point eight to three.

If it's above three, that's not good. Most doctors will say, hey, if you're at three, three point five, four, four point five, that's okay. They're gonna wait till you get above four point five, wait till it's it is five or six or seven. But then let's not wait. We don't want hypothyroid condition. The most common hypoth thyroid condition is called ashimotos. Ashimotos is an autoimmune disease. But you have to check the

thyroid and divis in your blood work. So if you have a thyroid problem, make sure you ask your endochronologist to do a full panel and to check antibodies as well. Okay, if your doctor is not doing a full panel, you just ask them and you say, hey, I want to know what might ain't the body. They don't check that because that's not going to change their treatment. All they care about. Remember we always said that the

medicine is just trying to hide the symptoms. So if you have you know hyperthyroid isn't going to get certain medications feel hyperth thyboids, we need to get another medication. What we want to do is get to the root cause of the thine wid problem. The root cause of the thine wid So it could be from the plituitary that we involve brain exercises for the solution. If it's

not from the patuitary, it could be a secondary thyroid problem. If it's a primary thyroid problem, it could be where you just need some herbal remedies. So I'm not being a prescription medication. I'm not the doctor that writes prescription medication. because they're comparing you to sick people. So when we look at blood work and or a functional medicine doctors look at bloodwork, there's a different scale where we're comparing you to healthy people. So healthy people have a very different scale. For example, it's over the liver. The two best tests with the liberal are quote ast and alt normal lab court or other quests diagnostic bioreference. Normally they're gonna say if you're over forty or your liver enzymes, that's too

high. So if there's someone who's at thirty, they might say that's normal. My scale is different. I don't want you above twenty six. So if your liver zigns are about twenty six, that means your liver's overworking. Maybe it's too much alcohol, Maybe it's too much drug, maybe it's too much of medication. Maybe it's too much heavy metals, too much mold, too much yeast, too much dust, too many allergies, too many supplements, too many chemicals in the food. But alcohol, rugs, those that

you can see the biggest moments that the fans your liver. The liver is a difference scale. Let's not wait till you get off their scale. Start working on your liver. When we look at cholesterol. We don't want to just look at total cholesterolf. You want to look at ratio of the HDL to the LDM, because if your HDL is I maybe your total cholesterol is high, but it's not bad because your HDL is your best defense against your LDL, which is the bad cholesterol. daylight that's when we want to eat during the daylight hours, so it's ten am to six pm, and when it's dark that's when we're fasting, so we're in fast from six pm to ten am. That's intermitten fasting that will

create autophagy to kill off the band brain cells. So intermitten fasting every single day, or if you want to do it all at once, you can do where you fast from Friday evening like you have your fraudl dinner and then you relax over the weekend, because don't do it during the week when you have to do your errands, and you're out in about and you're drive a and you're working, and you're picking up the kids, and you're cooking and

you're cleaning, and you under all this stuff. That's not the best time the fast. It has to be when you can be in a relaxed state. So that's what they like to do. The weekend. We're not going to work and I could just chill out. They're not too much on my plate. So you could do a thriving night fast to you Monday morning, so basically no food Saturday or Sunday own and then at Monday morning you can eat again. But when you do a fast like that, you ease into

it. Maybe just have fruit to break your fast, something very easy. You know, free are very easy to digest. It takes about twenty minutes, so that's called autophagy. When you fast and you cleaned out all the bad brain cells, the bad liver cells, the stomach and intestines. So if you want to master nutrition, one of the best things if you do is best get rid of all the bad stuff and do some clean eating.

You always want to eat like the hunter gatherer, so anything you could pick from a tree or a bush or the roots something you could catch one ingredient food. You have to stay away from the boxes and the cans and the bags, everything in storage containers, and you know, we want stuff that's fresh. That's the key to help, not stuff a little preservatives and food dies and chemicals and all that stuff. So we really want to master nutrition.

You have to stay i'd be outside of the supermarket. You're a hunter gatherer, so nothing boxes and bags, nothing in the aisles, all the fresh fruit, fresh veggies and other stuff on the outside or the supermarket. That is eating like a hunter gatherer. So you don't have to complicate it and follow any strict diet like keta or palia or head gins or you have to be a vegan and or a carter bore, you know the aips like

there's so many different bikeser sizes and ways to eat. But that's too complicated. Keep it simple. Just eat the colors of the rainbow. They get all your nutrients. Avoid the white foods. I ain't the sugar, the salt, that dairy, that bread, depasta all the white stuff and eat tons of colorful foods red, orange, yellow, green, whoa purple. Get the rainbow beat the rainbow. That's how you get all your nutrients, and then you won't desire the sugar. You won't desire in the carves,

you won't desire in the chaps. You won't you know, crave the cookies or the chart. But because you're getting all your nutrients. If you don't eat your nutrients, then you could eat all day long, so you could eat a whole box of entiments cookies, or a whole big band or good Dorito's chips, So the whole bands get of bread because there's no nutritional value. If you start to eat all the colors of the rainbow, you won't desire the bad stuff. If you are having the bad stuff, you're gonna

get lots of inflammation. And when you have inflammation that leads to disease. I don't care what disease. Is it colitis, that's inflammation, is it cardiitis that's inflammation, is it hepatitis, inflammation, authoritis, inflammation. All these itises are just inflammation of specific body parts. But if you have inflammation of your heart, probably have brain inflammation. If you have inflammation of your gut, you probably have liver inflammation. One of the best tests that I

have been doing recently. That helps to locate to see if you have inflammation, is called a q EG brain mapping. This q EG brain mapping tells us a lot of stuff about inflammation. It will literally say if your brain has white matter inflammation. It will tell us do you have intestinal inflammation. It will tell us are you in this stress mode fight or flight? Do you have cortisol hide? Are you angry? Are you aggressive? Do you have anxiety? And sleep? The q EG brain mappings this up. It's

also going to tell us about neurotransmitters. Do you not have enough dopamine? How as your aceetal coline. It also tells us about your thyroid do you have a hypothyroid problem, tells us you have a concussion, traumatic brain injury, if you metal poisoning. It tells us if you have memory problems, and it even breaks it down. Is it working memory, is it long

term memory? Is it short term memory? Is its sequential memory? Because these are all different parts of the brain, this q EG brain mapping picks this up, including brain fog, confusion difficulties, shifting tasks, motivation,

good, your way ahead of the game. Now, it's not very common to have someone whose blood work is perfect and whose brain mapping is perfect. In fact, I've never seen it, and I've been doing this for twenty three years. I've never seen anyone with a perfect brain and perfect blood work, including myself. In fact, when I was growing up, I was very sick and I was very unhealthy. I had bad acne, I was overweight, I had chronic bronchitis. I had to take medication, steroids,

antibiotics, I had brain fog, low energy. I used to eat chocolate, cake, pizza, ice cream, fried chicken, macaroni, and cheese. I mean, I had so much bread, so much dairy, so much sugar, Kitkatt Three Musketeers, snickers. I mean, I was at a control and I was sick, and I was feeling horrible. And the medicine for my bronchitis, steroids and antibiotics, they made me more sick than

the actual bronchitis. Made me nauseous, throw up, headaches. Oh my god, it made me feel horrible, so I had to look out to find a solution on my own, because the pediatrician just pumped me up with more and more medication, and that got me sicker and sicker and sicker. And I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. So I had to make drastic changes. So luckily, at that moment, my father was going on a health kick, and he asked me to come along to one

of the seminars that he was going. And I went to this natural hygiene sentinogue and I learned about how dairy is a big congestion of the lungs. So immediately and went home and I quit dairy. And within a month, my bronchitis went away. But not only that, I lost so much weight, My cockney cleared up, my brain fod went away, my energy improved, I started doing better in school, I started performing better in sports.

Girls started talking to me. I mean, my life changed immediately from quitting daily products, and then I quit sugar, and then I quit Boom dyes, and I just got more and more. It tense with how healthy I would become because the results changed my life. So I'd rather, you know, eat healthy food and feel amazing. Then eat crappy food and feel like crop. So to me, even though I'm in middle school and all my friends are eating jump food and fast food and fried food, I was eating

fruits and veggies. In fact, you know, you know I teenagers to be. They used to make fun of me. They would call me nuts and berries because I was always eating so many nuts and berries. You know, they made fun of me because they said my skin was turning orange because I ate so many carrots. But to me, I loved it because girls started talking to me. I started doing better in school, I started becoming

all stars and sports, so everything improved. So boys will be boys and they'll make fun of you, But it didn't matter because my life was amazing. So you can call me nuts and berries all you want because I'm healthy. And now then i'm forty five. All my old friends that used to make fun of me, they say, hey, can you help me get healthy like you've been? And I said, of course, because that's my

passion. And I'm not the doctor that writes prescriptions. I don't want to cut you open and take out your gall bladder or your tonsils, your appendix. My job is to get the body to heal itself. I want you you don't have to take medication, so you can prevent surgeries, prevent Alzheimer's, prevent cancer, prevent diabetes, prevent demandshut prevent hard disease. You could do it if you put the work and the effort in. So don't call me, don't email me. If you just want a doctor who's going to

wrighten you the prescription, that's not me. If you have sleeping difficulties, I'm not going to give you a sleeping pill. I'm going to teach you what you need to do to improve your sleep. If you have anxiety, I'm not going to get an anti anxiety pill or a xan X. That's not me. A lot of people want that. I'm not the doctor for

you if that's what you want. But if you don't want to take medicine, if you want to get to the root cause of your problem, if you want to heal yourself, if you want to help yourself, take responsibility for your own health, not have to lion doctors and pills and surgeries, then this is the place for you. But the first step is to do an evaluation. One of the best tests to do an evaluation. Other than the q EEG brain mapp event we were telling about. It's called a V

videostography. This is this really cool technology where you wear these infrared gagos and they measure your eye movements and they could tell us if you have a difference in your left and right brain. So a lot of people who have depression and anxiety, they have differences in their left and right brain. Patients with autism or add or OCD or Aspergers or Turette's, those are in bounces of the frontal cortex. The V and G is going to pick that up.

It's gonna say, hey, is one side working more than the other. When you have these functional disconnects, you get these developmental delays, you know, and you get ticks, get turetts, you get distracted, easy troubles focus, add ADHD, hyperactivity. So these are imbalances of the left and right brain. It's not just bipolar schizophrenia, but it's also these developmental delays.

People who have memory problems, brain fought, troubles with focus. The V and G is going to pick up exactly where the problems are in the Brain's a VG no radiation, no contrast fluid all it is. It's like taking a selfie of your eyes. But the technology measures the eyes, that measures the speed, the accuracy, and based on the different eye movements, whether it's a fast one, slow one, it's up, it's down, it's with a head turn, it's with a light, well, determine how

your brain is functioning. And it's so cool that you can actually see. So it's not just me saying, hey, this is the area the brain's now working. When you do this v test this BMG, you could literally watch the video see the graphs and you could see what parts of the brain and aren't working. We do these tests for concussion. Liberty in Brooklyn. We go and we do these v AND tests to see and how the brain is functioning before the season starts, and then when they if they hit their head, then we could redo the VNG and see the comparison and this is where your baseline was. Now we know this is the area that was damaged to during your concussion. So if you had kids in college or high school or pros that that play sports, this VMG is perfect

baseline testing for concussion. So we do this test. You know, let's say it's spring, we got whatever it is baseball, and we got lacrosse and in that type of stuff. So you want to do baseline testing now so that if something happens in the season nothing, we could figure out exactly where the problems are. And then obviously you want to do also over the summer for football, you know, before football season starts or soccer season starts.

We see a lot of male football players, a lot of female soccer players, a lot of hockey players in both sexes, so a lot of sports injuries that might not even realize can cause concussion. So we definitely want to do a V. If you ever hit your head, even if it was thirty years ago. I wrote a book, or I'm a co author in a book called Concussion Discussions, and my part is talking about how you can hit your head as a teenager and it can lead to dementia as an

adull, you know, thirty forty fifty years later. But the V and G will pick up any areas of the brain that are not functioning normally and let us know, even if you might not realize it yet.
