fix. I know a lot of people are looking for that magic pill that's going to fix all their problems. But that is not what we do at Kaplan Brain our Body. We teach you how to heal yourself, how to rewire your own brain through a process called neuroplasticity, to strengthen your brain. Just like you could go to the gym to strengthen your muscles, you can
actually do brain rehab to make your brain stronger. Now, it used to be thought that when you have a neuk logic condition such as Parkinson's or a stroke or Alzheimer's, that there's nothing you can do about it. That's the old way of thinking. The new way of thinking in the new millennium is that your brain can change your brain, can create more connections so it functions
at a higher level. Yes, it is true that we do lose ten percent of our brain cells every decade of our life after the age of forty. But what we want to do is make sure that the brain cells that we do lose are the bad brain cells, and make sure we do our best to take care of the good brain cells. Now, how do you take care of the good brain cells? Well, number one is physical exercise.
Sitting is the new you smoking. So if you have a job where you're sitting at the computer all day and you sit in the car on your commute, where you sit on the subway or the bus or the train, and then you come home after sitting at the computer all day, and then you sit at the dinner table to eat dinner. And then after you eat at the dinner table, then you go and sit on the couch and watching
netflicks. So if you're sitting on your commute, sitting at work, sitting at dinner, sitting on the couch, after, your brain is gonna get worse and worse and worse. And I saw this happen to my Grandma Dotty when she moved to Florida. Her brain was functioning at a high level. But year after year of living in Florida, her brain got worse. And the reason was is she just sitting on the couch all day. She was watching TV. Be you know, she didn't get up and do the activities
that she did when she lived in New York. When she lived in New York, she would play tennis, she would play cards, she would go dancing, she'd go out to all the shows. She'd always get dressed up and put on her makeup and get her hair done and always was the hit of the party, always having fun. But then when she moved down to Florida, she lost all her you know, close family members that were nearby.
She didn't have their social group that she did. She didn't go out like she did, she didn't have ways to exercise like she was in New York. And every year it was slow, but her brain got worse and worse. You know, you don't just develop dementor Alzheimer's overnight. It happens over years, can happen over forty years. Actually. One of the first signs of Alzheimer's loss of smell. The best test for checking your smell it's
called the peanut butter test. And the further you could smell the peanut butter away from your nostril, the better. If you have to hold it so close to your nostril that it's almost touching, that's not good. And you have to check each nostril individual. So you got to close one nostril, check the smell of that side, and then close the other nostril and check the smell of that side. And the goal is to be able to hold
the peanut butter far away and still be able to smell it. If you have an issue with smell, that could be a neurological disorder in the future. And we're seeing lots of people called the COVID nineteen long haulers that has still lost their smell and not have gotten it back. And it's been four years. That good. The more years you have with loss of smell, the worse your brain's gonna get. Smell goes directly into the frontal cortex,
and that's where dementia starts from. That's where your memory is, Your focus is, your motivation, your organization, your planning, anxiety, depression, social behavior, executive functions, punctuality, time management, aphasia's, add ADHD, autism, dyslexia, Tourette's, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, they almost all start from your frontal cortex. So if you want to prevent or you want to reverse any of those conditions I just listened, you might have to work on
your frontal cortex. Your frontal cortex likes little finger movements. Your frontal cortex like smell out. Your frontal cortex likes quick eye movements. So if you could do exercise where you're doing quick eye movements at the same time of moving your little fingers at the same time of smelling something, that's going to give your frontal cortex a lot of input. And your brain's like a muscle.
You use it or you lose it. Just like you could do weightlifting to make your muscle stronger, you could do frontal cortex exercises to improve your memory and focus. But you gotta do the work. I'm not the doctor that writes you prescription for ritilin or tells you to take puveragen to improve your memory. There's no magic pill that's going to improve your memory. If there was, everyone would just take this magic pill and no one would get dementia.
At Alzheimer's. There is no pill. Stop looking for some magic medicine or some supplement that's going to cure your brain condition. The truth is you have to do it on your own. You could put in the work to strengthen your brain, but you got to figure out where your weak areas of your brain are. One of the best tests to figure out where the weak areas of your brain are is called a q EEG brain mapping. A qEEG brain
mapping is a test where you wear a cap. It looks like a swimmer's cap, and it has electrodes attached to it and all the different areas of your brain and your front and your back and your side, and it measures all your brain waves. It measures your alpha brain waves. Your alpha brain waves is how you are normally, you know, pretty much on a daily basis. Your beta brain waves. That's when you're really focused and concentrating.
You're, you know, presenting at work, or you're taking a test, or you're reading a book, or you're trying to do some math and you really got to focus and think. That's when you use your beta your theta brain waves. That's when you're kind of day dreaming, just kind of whistling in La la land, kind of looking out the window, listen to the birds chirp. It just kind of day dreaming. That's your theta brain waves and your delta brain waves. That's when you're sleeping, when you're relaxed,
when you're chilling out, when your brain isn'tenough to do anything. It's at nighttime when you want to shut off, so you're get in that deep sleep. That's your delta brain waves. So the qEEG brain mapping measures all these different brain waves. Now more important than the type of brain wave that's abnormal
is the location of the abnormal brain wave. So based on the location of the abnormal brain wave, we can analyze your brain and it could tell us are you gonna have memory problems short term memory, sequential memory, long term? Are you gonna have depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, insomnia? Do you have difficulties shifting tests, problems with motivation, organization planning? Do you have dizziness or headaches? Do you have balance problems? You have floaters in
the eyes, ringing in the ears? Do you have a thyroid problem, heavy metal poisoning, you have concussion? Do you have intestinal inflammation? You have brain inflammation. Is there a problem with your dopamine or your aceto coaling? The brain mapping picks up all of this. It's a great test. It only takes about twenty to thirty minutes to do. It's non invasive, there's no radiation, you don't need any contrast fluid. You don't have to sit in some small loud tube like an MRI or a cat scan. There's
no risk in high reward. It tells us exactly which areas of the brain are working well and which areas are not working well. And I could let you know which areas are not working well and give you natural, holistic and integrative solutions that do not require any surge or any medication on how to increase input into those weak areas through a process called neuroplasticity. Right, but if
you do the work, you could get the results. So we pride ourselves in getting to the root cause of the problem rather than treating the symptoms. Most doctors just try and hide the symptoms. But you don't want to hide the symptoms. If you get to the root cause, you could get a permanent fix. You know, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So I am a functional neurologist different than a medical neurologist. If you have anxiety,
I don't write you a prescription for anti anxiety pill. If you have sleeping troubles, I don't give you a sleeping pill. If you have headaches, I don't give you a headache pill. If you have dizziness, I don't give you a dizziness pill. I don't write you a prescription if you have Parkinson's or if you have Alzheimer's. But what I do do is make sure
that your brain functions at the highest level. And the way to do that is through a process called neuroplasticity, where we rewire the brain, actually creating more connections between the different areas of the brain. If you want your brain to function at the highest level, you have to create more connections. They're called collaterals or synapses, and you could create more bridges, more synapses,
more connections, more collaterals by exercising your brain. When you exercise your brain, you're going to increase input, increase neurotransmitters, increase blood and oxygen, increase mitochondrial function, increase ATP production. But you gotta give the brain what it needs fuel delivery. Fuel deliveries such as good food, eating all the
colors of the rainbow with your fruits and veggies. Staying away from the white foods, the sugar, the wheat, the dairy, the cheese, the yogurt, the milk, the ice cream, all the creamy sauces, the ranch stretching the blue cheese. Get rid of all those white foods, all the crackers and the cereals and the oatmeals, the rices and the potatoes, all those colorless foods. They don't have the nutrients like all the fruits and
veggies with all those different colors. So stay away from the white foods and increase all your colored foods. That's fuel delivery for your brain. And when to do it is during the day. Your brain needs energy during the day, so don't eat at night. Don't eat at seven eight o'clock at night when your brain needs to chill and relax. Needs to get into that delta brain waves. Those ram that deep sleep. We gotta get your circadium rhythms
going. But when you eat at night, it increases cortisol. Cortisol is the stress hormone. And if you're increasing cortisol and the stress hormone at nighttime, even if in your bed, you're not gonna be in a deep sleep, it's gonna be a light sleep, not going to be a RESTful sleep. You're gonna wake up feeling groggy that you need a cup of coffee to get you going. That's not healthy, So stop eating at night. You actually want four hours between your last meal or the last food you put in
your body in bedtime. So if you go to sleep ten pm, you don't want to have any food or snacks after six pm. You also don't want to have electronics after six pm. You don't want to be watching Netflix, TV, the football game. You don't want to be on your computer. You don't want to be on your cell phone. You don't want to be on Instagram or Facebook or YouTube or Google. Unplug at night, turn off your Wi Fi, put everything on airplane mode. Start to do things
at night where don't use electronics. Start playing cards, start reading books, start listening to podcasts, start taking up a habit. Take a dance class, learn how to play musical instrument, join a book club, do some sort of activity at night that does not involve electronics. So many groups and classes and meetups you could do, Especially where we are New York City Tri State area, there's activities every hour of the day. But stop sitting at
home on the couch. Let in your brain deteriorate. You want Alzheimer's in dementia. Then keep sitting on the couch on your computer, watching TV, all those things. That is a recipe for disaster. You want to get good fuel delivery. Got to get up your button because when you start to move your body, when you start to socialize, when you start to learn new things, you're gonna get more blood and more oxygen to the brain. That's fuel delivery. So not only eating all the colors in a rainbow,
but getting blood and oxygen. Getting physical exercise. Find a physical exercise that you like to do, so that's not a chore or an errand you don't want to be like, oh, I gotta go to the gym. I want to find something that you like. Maybe it's a hip hop dance, or maybe it's a pole dancing, or maybe it's a belly dancing. Maybe it's pilates or yoga. Maybe it's the bar class. Maybe it's orange theory. Maybe it's just going to some aerobics class. Maybe it's going to a
swimming class. Maybe it's going to get a tennis lesson. Just find something that gets you active that you like doing. Could just be hiking with your friends, could be ski or snowboarding, you know, it could be anything that gets your body moving, biking, roller blading. I don't care what it is, but it's got to move your body. You use it or
you lose it. And when you get exercise, not only is it good for your brain to help dementia and Alzheimer's, it's good for your heart, it's good for your gut, it's good for your skin, it's good for your mood. It's good for your liver and your kidneys and your bladder. Exercise helps with everything. I don't care if you have heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, we all need exercise, especially the brain issues you got. Add you got ADHD, autism, dyslexia,
if you have some of these developmental delays touretts. We help a lot of patients with that and we get their body moving movement. That is the key. Also for these developmental delays such as autism, add ADHD, dyslexia, turetts, you have to check what's called your primitive reflexes first. The primitive reflexes are these reflexes that stay in the child's body after one year of age. That's abnormal. If these reflexes are still retained after you're one years old,
then that's abnormal brain development. And that would always be the first step to rehabbing an underdeveloped brain is working on the primitive reflexes. The second step would be working on motor and sensory input, and the third step would be behavioral, speech, physical cognitive therapy. Unfortunately, the way the modern medical society is set up for autism and add and ADHD and pervasive disorders and sensory processing disorders, as they do the occupational therapy, the physical therapy, the
speech therapy first. But if you actually did it in the right order where we focus on the primitive reflexes first, then the motor and sensory second, and then the occupational physical speech third. That's going to get you the best results. And a lot of children with developmental delays have poor eating habits that
needs to be addressed as well to bring down the brain inflammation. And the brain inflammation comes from dairy bread products, all the grains, all the processed foods, all the cereals, and the crackers and the oatmeals, the yogurts and everything in boxes and cans and bags, pizzas, and the fried chicken and the cheese and the sandwiches that causes brain inflammation. Stay away from sugar,
food dye, food preservatives, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors. When you go to the supermarket, you want to stay on the outside of the supermarket where everything is fresh, and it's better to buy organic. If you can't afford to buy everything organic, make sure you buy the foods that you eat the peel organic like strawberry you're eating the skin, grapes, blueberries, something like avocado, banana, oranges, where you don't eat the peel or the
skin. Not as important to get organic because the pesticides and the herbicides don't dig into the fruit as much. When you're buying fish, you want to buy wildfish, don't buy farmed, raised fish. And you don't want to buy fish from the Pacific Ocean. Buy it from Iceland, nor from the Mediterranean, from the Atlantic, stay away from the Pacific, you know, from China, Japan, from Alaska salmon. We want Atlantic, we want Norwegian, we want Icelandic, we want Mediterranean fish, and we want smaller
fish. The smaller the fish, the less the mercury. Sardines, salmon, those are the smaller fish, right, We don't want the big fish. The bigger the fish, the more mercury. Right. We want to stay from away from all heavy metals. Lead, aluminum, arsenic, they're everywhere. Arsenics found in apple juice and brown rice. You know, Lead's found not only in the old paint chips, but it's found in the waters and the pipes. Mercury is not only found in the fish, it's in
some people's fillings in their teeth. So you've got to figure out, you know, where these chemicals are coming from. Sometimes people have mold in the house. Sometimes people use aluminum pans, aluminum foil, aluminum cans, aluminum cookwaar, aluminum storage. Have to stay away from aluminum. It's in deodorant, they spray it, in the air, it's in the water. There's
aluminum everywhere and that's one of the leading causes of Alzheimer's disease. But there are natural ways to detox to klate heavy metals without any severe coulation therapy. There's two options with your health. Either you're gonna get better, you're gonna get worse. And the way to get better is to create good habits over and over and over again. You got to pick your five vital habits that are what I call non negotiables. Every day you gotta do it, no matter what. Every day I'm gonna exercise. I don't care if it's literally just running down the block one time. I don't care if it's doing just ten push ups and ten sit ups. But every day gonna do something
Most days it's an hour work out. Some days it's a minute workout. But every day there is some sort of exercise. That's a non negotiable. Number two is cold water at the end of my shower. Non negotiable. I don't care if it's below twenty degrees outside. Your house is freezing. You do not want cold. You turn it on, so you end your shower in cold. That's a non negotiable for me. No matter how I feel, I always end my shower in cold. Number three is drinking water
first thing on the morning, on an empty stomach. It's a non negotiable. Drink my water, a pinch of pink Maley and salt or Celtic salt or Spanish cave salt. Squeeze some lemon or lime for some flavor on an empty stomach. You gotta keep your body hydrated. You got to keep your brain hydrated. If you don't do it for brain, do it for aesthetics. Helps prevent wrinkles, makes your skin look nice, makes your hair good, your nails better. At least do it for esthetic purposes. If you're
not going to do it for health purposes. But think about your brain as if it were a grape. When a grape is dehydrated, it shrivels up to a raisin. Your brain, when dehydrated, will shrivel up. You want your brain nice and big and juicy and soft. You don't want to shrivel up brain. That's a recipe for dementia, Alzheimer's, parkinsons. We don't want that. So keep your body and brain hydrated. You're supposed to drink half your body weight announces every If you weigh one hundred and fifty pounds,
you have to drink seventy five ounces of sole water every day. Drink it on an empty stomach, right in the morning when you wake up, a half hour before each meal, and at night as well. You want to prevent Alzheimer's dementia, you stay hydrated. It's one of the easiest solutions. Just make sure your water is clean. If you drink a lot of plastic water bottles, you're gonna be eating a lot of plastic. If you drink out of tap water, you're gonna be getting certain chemicals, even medication
heavy metals. There's a lot of crap in the drinking water. If you do get a filter, something like a reverse osmosis that's good. We just want to mineralize it. Get some of that pinkumeline sort or the Celtic salt. Right, So if you get distilled water, you want to mineralize it. If you get that filter, make sure you're stored in glass. If you fill up your water bottle, make sure it's a glass water bottle or a stainless steel. Stay away from the plastic containers. We're finding more and
more how harmful these plastics are to our health. People are drinking and eating more plastic than ever before. So make the right choice. Stop buying plastic water bottles. You will save your health, you will save lots of money, you will save the environment. It's a no brainer. The only upfront cause is buying that filter. After that you make up your money because you
don't have to buy water bottles anymore. And when you have a glass water bottle, you could just have it covered in like a rubber covering, so if you drop it it doesn't break. Or you get a stainless steel, those aren't gonna break if you drop it, all right, So water is very important, but most of those waters out there are bad, you know, Desani aquafina, poling springs, a lot of these waters are acidic. Even the alkaline waters, the smart waters, the electrolyte waters, they're not
healthy either. So you gotta be very careful of where you're getting your water from. All right now, it's not like we're in a third world country. It's not like, you know, we're in India where you're gonna drink dirty water and get polio. It doesn't happen. That's how people get polios from dirty water. So once in America, they clean the water, they improve the sanitation, polio went away. So it's about cleaning the water.
Lots of diseases go away when you clean your water. Now, the problem is we're creating all these new diseases from all the chemicals we're using, whether it's the pesticides and herbicides that they use on their food, or they inject the animals with steroids and antibiotics and hormones, or they feed the animals genetically modified corn. You gotta be very careful what you put in your body. You are what you eat. If you eat a stressed cow, an anxious
cow, a depressed cow, you're gonna become anxious and depressed. If you eat an anxious and depressed fish, you're going to become anxious and depressed. If you eat an anxious or depressed chicken, you will become anxious or depressed. You are what you eat. So if you have these animals that are raised in miserable conditions, they're separated from their family, they're stuck in these
little cages, they're fed these horrible diets, they have no exercise. They're all depressed, they're all anxious, they're overweight, they're full of drugs. You think that's a healthy food to eat. No, it's not. You might eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, but if they're full of all
these chemicals and pesticides and herbicides, you're creating more dysfunction. Roundup or glife estate, which is banned in almost all countries, is everywhere in America's on the fruit, it's on the veggies, it's on the grass, it's on the lawn. Like the landscapers spread everywhere, the farmers spread it everywhere. It's a poison. It causes cancer. Monsanto slash Bayer who owns it. They keep losing all these lawsuits of people who are dying of cancer. Yet
it's still not banned. In a country like Japan, if there's a product that kills somebody, they ban it here. Nope, everyone's greedy, so it takes a lot for them to ban from the FDA, to ban a certain drug or a food because it makes people money. And if there is something that's going to take away money from the pharmaceutical companies, a lot of times, the FDA won't approve it. So they won't ban the stuff that makes you sick, and they won't approve stuff that makes you healthy. I
wonder why that is. Maybe because the FDA is not actually a government institution. Maybe it's influenced by private corporations more than our own government. A lot of the funding from the FDA comes from pharmaceutical companies, comes from companies who are incentivized for you to use these toxic cheminals and take these harmful medications and
drugs. So a lot of people get rich when you're sick. Right when you're sick, a lot of doctor visits, a lot of testing, MRIs cat scans, a lot of hospital visits, a lot of pharmaceutical purchases, a lot of surgeries, a lot of examinations, follow ups, and there has to be medication to take care of the side effects of the medication. It's a vicious cycle. There's lots of people that get rich off you being sick, so there's a lot of incentive for you to be sick and being
on the computer, watching TV, scrolling up on the internet. They're gonna have you make choices that make you sick. Never buy anything on a commercial. What's on a commercial Dorito's, frosted flakes, bud Light, Coca Cola, McDonald's medications. You'll never see anything healthy on a commercial. Have you ever seen a KL commercial, a broccoli commercial, a cucumber commercial, a carrot commercial. No, you don't see them because people know they're healthy.
You'll see an orange juice commercial, which is not healthy. You will not see an orange commercial, which is healthy. You'll see canned peas from Green Giant, which is unhealthy. But you won't see organic, natural string beans on a commercial, so because people know it's healthy. You'll see frosted flakes on a commercial, right, but you won't see celery on a commercial. You won't see spinach on a commercial. Everything on a commercial is bad.
They're trying to convince you that's healthy. Oh, you'll see cheese and yogurt and Hi these celebrities with their milk mustache and wonderbread, and you know Bolger's coffee and you know lemonade and snapple and all these things that are terrible. Snapple made from the best stuff on earth. You ever see those ingredients? How could they say made from the best stuff on earth? How could they
say that's all natural? And even the unhealthy. Food is worse in America than it is in other countries because all these chemicals are banned in other countries. An oreo cookie in America is worse than an oreo cookie in Germany. Frosted flakes in America is worse than frosted flakes in Italy. Eminem's in America is worse than Eminem's in Japan. Everything is worse in America. Third world countries have healthier food than us because everything's organic. They have their chickens in
their backyard. They got their mango trees and their banana trees. You just pick it from the yard. The closer to the earth, the better, The more processed the worst. Follow these suggestions if you want to function better,

Don't put it in the universe. You don't want to be driving and say, oh, I'm late for work.
I hope there's no traffic. That's when you get stuck in traffic. What you want to say is, AH, I hope the roads are clear. You don't want to say I hope it doesn't rain. Do you want to say I wish the sun will come out? Change your mindset, start being more positive, and stop hanging out with negative people who are always complaining.
A negative thought or statement is five times powerful than a positive one. So in dealing with you know, your spouse or your kids, or your boss or your employee, or your teacher or your student, whoever it is, give them five compliments before one criticism. You know, if I'm dealing with my kid, Oh, great job brushing your teeth today, great job making your bed, good job on that math test, you did great at basketball practice. I love how you said please and thank you when we were out
for dinner. That's five compliments. Now we could say, hey, can't you be a little bit nicer to your little brother? So now we could work on something that they want to improve. But if you're always saying, hey, you didn't pick up your socks, you're always picking on your little brother. You forgot to wash your hands before dinner. Right. If you're
always criticizing, then that's what they were member. But when you give them five compliments, then they're more likely to listen to you and they're not gonna ignore you because everything that comes out of your mouth isn't a negative statement. If everything is negative, people zone you out. But if most things are positive, they're gonna hear what you say, They're gonna listen, they're gonna pay attention, and then when you have to criticize them or give them some
helpful advice, they're going to listen a little bit more. And it's even more powerful when you do it for yourself. Don't criticize yourself. Tell yourself why you're healthy. I don't care if it's hey. I could see, I can hear, I can pop, I can pee, I can talk, I can walk. Give yourself five compliments about your health before you start working on that one negative thing. I want my head to feel better. I want more energy. I want better sleep, I want better memory,
want better focus. I want to do better at shifting task. I want to have better balance, better stability. I want to have a better mood. Create that rewire your brain. But you got to figure out which areas aren't functioning properly. One of the best tests to figure that out. It's called a VNG or a VOG. It's video nostography.
