I'm your host, doctor Eric Kaplan. We're talking about the seven day Boost your brain Power Challenge. So a lot of people took this on. It consists of seven days, and you could start this today if you want. Day number one was drinking half your body weight of water

in ounces. So if you weigh one hundred and sixty pounds, you gotta drink eighty ounces of water every single day. I recommend the sol A water, which is putting a pinch of pink and ley in salt at the same time, making sure you drink this water on an empty stomach right when you wake up in the morning, and a half hour for each meal that is called so lay water. Best to drink on an empty stomach and drink half your body weight in ounces of this soul Lai water every single day. That's

day one of the challenge. Day two is to eat each color of the rainbow. So on day two, you not only have to drink half your body weight in ounces of water, every day. But now you have to add eating each color of the rainbow. It doesn't have to be a lot of food, but make sure you eat each color of the rainbow starting on day number two. Day number three is the diaframatic breathing, where you do three sets of inhaling for four seconds, holding it for seven seconds, and

exhaling for eight seconds. When you inhale, push your belly down and out, and when you exhale, it sucks in and squeezes the carbon diox side out. So on day three, you're drinking half your bodyweight ounces, you're eating each color of the rainbow. Then you're adding the oxygen, which is the four seven eight breathe. Day four you got to do physical exercise. Twenty minutes of a physical exercise, and it could be just walking, running, jogging, biking, hiking, dancing, going to the gym, playing

basketball, playing soccer, playing volleyball. Just has to get your body moved for twenty minutes every single day. So on day four, not only doing your exercise every day, you're drinking the water, eating each color of the rainbow, and doing your breathing exercise. Day five, you're gonna add novelty something new, something that you've never done before. The brain loves new things, So maybe just learn a new word, go to a new place and

meet a new person. The brain loves new things. Try different things. Try brushing your teeth lefty instead of with your dominant hand, to start to take a dance lesson and learn something you've never learned. Or join a book club and read book you never read, or you know, join a sewing club, or take up gardening, or you know, start learning how to build things, and you know, just do something new every single day.

Then you have to do intermittent fasting. That's the next challenge. Intermittent fasting is when you drink or when you eat only from ten am to six pm and you sleep from ten pm to six am, so you're eating for eight hours and you're fasting for sixteen. And then the day seven challenge is the twenty rule. Every twenty minutes, you get up for twenty seconds, walk twenty feet, look twenty feet, or do twenty jumping jacks, twenty squats,

twenty sit ups, twenty lunges. Just twenty seconds of a movement every twenty minutes. That's day seven. So on day seven you're doing everything you're drinking the water, you're eating all the colors in the rainbow. You're doing your breathing, you're doing your novelty, your new brain exercise, you're doing your intermittent festing. So you're adding on the last day, you know, to sum it all up, you know, including exercise, so you're doing

the exercise for twenty minutes. This doesn't count as your twenty minute rule. The twenty minute rule is if you're sitting for more than twenty minutes, So you got to do twenty minutes of exercise. That's one challenge. And then another challenge is anytime you're sitting for more than twenty minutes, you gotta get up for twenty seconds. That's the twenty roll. So day seven, you're

gonna be doing all seven challenges. And if you do that for one week, that would be enough time for you to notice a difference in your brain function. How you're improving your memory, you're improving your focus, you're improving your energy, your sleep less stress less anxiety. Not a cure for any condition, but if doing it for one week is enough time to improve function of your brain so you feel better and improve your quality of life, that's

There's three major ways to improve your memory and focus that you can implement immediately. The first is fuel delivery.

Fuel delivery is oxygen, water, food, right, so we spoke about before, but eat each color of the rainbow. Then you get all your nutrients. We talked about breathing inhale for four seconds, hold it for seven exhale for eight breathe from your diaphragm, push your belly down and out on the inhale. Focus on the exhale being at least twice as long as the inhale to get rid of the carbon dioxide. And then we also spoke

about water. Drinking half your body weight in ounces of with a pinch of pink malay and salt to add the minerals so that you don't just pee out the water that you drink, but you actually absorb it. So a lot of people drink water and then they just pee it out. It's not getting absorbed. A lot of people eat food and then just poop it out. It's not getting absorbed and nutrients aren't getting utilized. So it's not just about

eating the food. It's also about absorbing the food. It's not about drinking water. It's about absorbing the water. The best time to absorb it is not an empty stomach. Harder when you have food in there, so you don't want to drink water when there's food in your stomach. It's harder to absorb, it's harder to digest. You always want to drink water on an empty stomach, right, that's your fuel delivery, oxygen, food, and water. Now, the second most important thing to improve your memory and focus

is novelty doing new things. You have to do new things every single day. Stop repeating the same week over and over and over again. Mondays, the same Tuesdays, the same Wednesdays, the same So I know, people get news routines and people are creatures of habits, but that is not beneficial for the brain. The brain needs new activities, new people, new ideas, learning new things, going to new places, meeting new people, learning

things you never learned before. All right, it could be a language, an instrument, a dance, a hobby, but you need to be a student for life. If you want to keep your brain strong, then you got to use it. The brain is like a muscle. You'll use it

or you lose it. So if you just use it during work and that's it, and then you come home and watch Netflix and go on YouTube and go on Facebook and go to bed and then wake up and work and the same thing over and over and over, your brain is going to get worse and worse and worse. So we need to strengthen your brain by doing brain exercises. And it's not doing stuff you know on the computer, you know,

brain games on the computer. The stuff that I was suggesting, right, it's moving your body, learning a new dance, learning a musical instrument, traveling, meeting new people. It's getting off your butt and doing activities and activities that are fun. Now, we gotta have fun. Everyone's too serious. Right now, we got to have fun. There's twenty four hours in a day. Eight hours is sleep, eight hours is work, and eight hours should be fun. And hopefully you're making something fun that's healthy.

Right, So I do a lot of fun activities that are healthy, like basketball, tennis, soccer, go to Orange theory, go to retro fitness, go hiking. You know, you want to do stuff that is getting your body moving and you're having fun at the same time. But you got to find out what's fun for you. It might be you know, yoga or pilates, or you know, a bar class or you know, you got to find what's good for you zoomba. You know, something that's hopefully

social, something that is getting your body moving and healthy. And yet it doesn't always have to be exercise. You know, I like to play cards, so it's very social, go out with my friends. But then I'm also using my brain. I gotta strategize. Oh what cards are on the table? I gotta you know, bet money? Oh like how much should I bet? Should I not bet? You know, So, even though it's not a physical exercise, it is working your brain, and it's social

and you're having fun and you're getting out of the house. You know, we like to play a lot of board games, and in my house we like to play Jenga and Uno and Monopoly, and you know a lot of those classics like pictionary, and we like family feud, so we have a family feud games. So you know, there's a lot of fun stuff that makes you think and social that's going to make your brain stronger. You know, even just playing chess and checkers and connect four. I mean, you've

got to use your brain. But you're also being social. You're bonding with your family, your kids, your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend, whoever it is. You're laughing. You know, you're strategizing, but you're not just sitting on your butt watching a movie. Right. That's most people's you know way they bond as all let's watch TV or movie together. But you know, you gotta get off your butt. Do a little bit differently. I ain't go play minister golf, go bowling, go

ice skating, roller skating, you know, do the fun stuff. Have some fun, right, we gotta have fun and that makes your brain stronger. If you're always miserable, your brain gets weaker. You're always complaining, your brain dies off. But the more activities you do, the new activities that you're not used to doing, right, So, you know, novelty

is key. Don't you know, always do the crossword puzzle, start switching it up, do sudoku, do the word jumble or wordle or you know, do a maze or a a jigsaw puzzle, or you know, every day, do something different, right, don't always do the same brain game. Novelty, they do things new, take a new way to work, you know, just do anything new, make a new meal they never made before. It could be anything, you know, just you know, learn something new. Learn how to build a desk, you know from ikea.

You know, learn how to plant, you know, herbs in your garden, and you know, learn how to chop wood. It could be anything. Make a fire, filter water, you know, hopefully something that's like helpful in the real world too, Right, so something that you can contribute to others and help others, that makes your brain stronger. You know, the more charity work you do, the more you help others, the stronger

your brain gets. You're selfish, your brain will die off quicker. So giving others actually makes your brain stronger, releases hormones and neurotransmitters and activates mitochondria and stem cells. And you know, it's really amazing the neurologic changes that occur with giving and loving and charity and helping others. And not only your brain, but it helps other people's brain. If you do a good deed, it helps your brain, It helps the person you're doing the good deed

too, It helps their brain. Plus anyone who observed you do the good deed helps their brain as well. Feel good hormones, oxytocin. You want to stimulate that, get that serotonin going, that dopamine going, you know all those You know, you have a walking pharmacy just in your gym, just by activating those muscles or helping other people or you know, you could literally create all these treatments of chemical imbalances. And I say that with air

quotes. You know, that's blame a lot of these neurological sort of any chemical imbalances. But you could produce these chemicals through charity, through exercise, through helping others, through taking a long walk on the beach and going outside in the sun and breathing the air, putting your feet in the dirt and the sand and the grass. You know, we can release these chemicals on

our own without any drugs, no medication. So that's what we try and do at our offices at Caplin Brain and Body is help people in a natural, holistic and integrative way without any drugs, surgery, any risky procedures. So when doing a medical treatment or exam, you always measure the risk versus the reward. How risky is this and what's the reward? You know, you gotta be careful taking all these X rays and cat skins and taking these

contrastsleuies and ultrasounds and mammograms. And it's a lot of radiation. We're only a lot of certain amount of radiation that our body can handle. So you've got to really pick and choose what's the most important time. I'm trying to say about my radiation for when I really need it, And luckily I haven't had too much radiation because I have and needed too many thorough evaluations because I'm trying to keep myself healthy and try and stay away from that, all right,

So you know you could do it. You can make your brain stronger. Right, So we got fuel delivery is one, novelty is two, and three is exercise. That's neurologic exercises, that's physical exercises, brain exercises. You've got to work your brain. I can give you an easy one

right now. So what you do with your right hand, you make a peace sign like just holding two fingers up, and in your left hand make the ok sign which is your outer of three fingers up and your thumb and your pointer finger touching and make like an O. And so what you do

is you count to three. You say one, two three, and then you switch and do the piece sign on the other hand and the okay sign on the other hand, and you switch them at the same exact time, and every three seconds you switch one two three, switch piece on one okay on the other one two three switch. So it helps to connect that left and right brain. That's all you're good for. The frontal core text and the frontal cortex is a lot of times where dementia starts, so it's called

frontal temporal dementia. A lot of memory comes from that frontal cortex. Now, how are you going to know how your frontal core tex is functioning? Well, you got to do an evaluation, and there's different types of evaluation. One of the best evaluations is called a q EEG brain mapping. A q EEG brain mapping is where you wear this cap sort of look like a swimmer's cap, and it measures all your brain waves and it's going to tell you, Hey, do you have short term memory problems? Do you have

sick one memory? You have long term memory? You have working memory problems? Do you have troubles with focus, motivation, organization, planning, language, anxiety, depression, social behaviors? Is there problems with your dopamine? Is there white mattered inflammation? Is there? Intestinal problems? Is there thyroid problem? Is there concussion or TBI? Is there a pathology? Is there heavy metal poisoning? Is there issues with shifting tasks? Is their executive functions

problems? Is there sensory issues, balance problems, headaches, dizziness? Is there problems where you have bringing in the ears or floaters? In the eyes, or is there a problem with your nervous system that's overstimulated. Is their problem with your stress levels and sleep deprivation and insomnia. It could literally pick up all these separate thics. It's called a q EEG brain mapping. It

takes about twenty thirty minutes to do the whole process. There's no radiation, there's no risk, and the beauty part is we get the results right away, super quick, and we could literally tell you which parts of your brain are functioning well and which parts of your brain aren't functioning well, and then come up with natural, holistic ways to improve those weak areas through a process

called neuroplasticity, which means rewiring your brain. Welcome back to boost your brain power. I'm your host, doctor Eric Kaplan. So we're talking about the best ways to improve your brain function. All right. The three most important ways are fuel delivery, novelty,

and brain activation. Exercise. You got to exercise that brain. You got to challenge it. You got to do memory exercises, balance exercises, vision exercises, coordination exercises, reaction times. There's so many brain exercises you could do, even smelling exercises. You know, smell is one of the first things that goes with Alzheimer's in Parkinson's disease, and it's related to that frontal cortex. Smell goes directly to that frontal cortex. It's called the olfactory nerve.

It's the only nerve that goes directly to the brain as far as your sensory systems. It's very powerful. So if you have an issue with your smell, that could lead to neurological disorder. That's very dangerous. So you have to do smelling exercises and the idea the best test is called a peanut butter test. The peanut butter test will tell us how well your frontal cortex

and smell your factory nerve is working. And what you do is you want to hold the peanut butters far away from your nose as possible and still smell the peanut butter. So you hunt it all the way down by your waist. Cover one nostril, so you test each nostril separately, because you might have good smell in one nostril and bad smell in the other nostril. Then

you're gonna have this brain imbalance that's not good either. So when you have one side smelling good in the other side smelling bad, that's not good because you're gonna get differences in activation of your brain function. If you have one ear that here as well and one that doesn't, that's not good. You get imbalances or one eye. So your health is about keeping everything in balance. You want your smell balance, you want your muscles balance, you want

your bones balanced. Your circulation, your blood pressure should be the same from right to left. Your pupil size should be the same from right to left. When you stick out your tongue, it should go straight out. It should go out to one side. When you smile or frown, your face should look the same. If you have differences and left to right, that means there's going to be imbalances of your brain function, and that's not good.

So there's a test called a VNG video and nostography, or sometimes it's called a VOG video oculography, and that measures the balance of your brain function. That's going to tell us if one side's overactive or one side's underactive. So we'll see that a lot. In a bipolar disorder or manic depressant, we have one side that's overactive, that's more the anxiety in the mania, and then you have one side that's underactive, that's the depression, the lack

of motivation, the fatigue. So a lot of people have these imbalances and we got to figure out, o, hey, what areas are overactive and that could be related to your sleeping difficulties or your heart palpitations or your high blood pressure, and we might have to calm those down. Which areas are underactive poor memory or focus, low motivation, fatigue, brain fog. Then we got to stimulate those. So there's imbalances from left to right. So

that's why it's good to do this vn G test or VOG. This test is super simple. You just gotta wear goggles and you look at different like this red light. It's gonna go right, and it's gonna go left, and it's gonna go up and down. It's gonna go fast and slow, and it's gonna be in the dark and a light, and it's gonna be with the head turnet. So you do all these different evaluations and based on that we could figure out which areas of brain are weakest and which areas are

strongest, which areas are overactive, which areas are underactive. So to get good brain function, you have to make things equal from right to left. That's super important, right, That's why you have to do this VNG test. And we're gonna give a gift to you guys. So that test is very good because there's no radiation, there's no risk, there's no contrast fluid, you don't have to sit in some small tube, there's no claustrophobia, there's no loud sounds, super quick, only

takes about fifteen minutes to do, uh, and very valuable. We get the results right away as well. So getting back to the brain function, right, So we said you need fuel delivery, you need novelty, and you need brain activation. Now, with brain activation, you can also do physical exercise. So physical exercise is going to make your brain stronger, It's going to get more blood and more oxygen. Physical exercise is the cure for

every condition. If you have heart disease, if you have cancer, if you have diabetes, if you have obesity, if you have Alzheimer's, if you have dizziness and headaches. So you know, you might have to figure out which exercise is appropriate for you. But the worst thing for the brain is just lying down or sitting on the couch doing nothing. You know, when people get concussions, a lot of doctors tell them, hey, just rest. That's actually not good advice. A lot of search shows that the

rest can actually make concussion symptoms worse. We see a lot of concussion patients and our offices in New Jersey and New York, and we do it virtually as well. And what we have to do is get their brain stronger. Right. You know, Let's say, if you injured a muscle, you can't just say, oh, I'm not gonna I'm just gonna rest it. No, you have to exercise it. You have to get it strong. Now, you can't overdo it where the you know, muscle gets strained.

You can't overdo the brain where the brain gets overactive either. That's not good. So with concussion, you can underdo it by just resting too much, and you can overdo it by working too hard. So that's what we do very well. It's an art of just kind of little by little getting that brain stronger and stronger. Just like building a muscle. You start off with five pounds and then you go to ten pounds and then you go to fifteen. A lot of these concussion CLINICX they kind of overdo it and then they

create more symptoms there. So concussion it's you know, it's very particular because everybody's brain is different, so when you get a concussion, you could damage all different areas of the brain. So that's why we've got to do proper evaluations. And the qEEG brain mapping and the VNG are the best testing if

you've had concussion. All right, Now, what else is important to improve your memory is your rest right, So if your brain's not resting, then it's not absorbing the nutrients, it's not healing, it's not cleaning out the bad brain cells. So after forty years of age, every decade of our life we lose ten percent of our brain cells. However, the key is to make sure that we get rid of the bad brain cells and we keep the good brain cells. And the way we do that is through autophogy.

Autoplogy means eat self. And what you want to do is eat your own bad brain cells and eliminate them. And we have all these ways to detox. When I say detox, that's getting rid of the bad stuff that we're exposed to. We have heavy metals. If you have heavy metals in your brain, like aluminum, that's going to lead to Alzheimer's. When you store food, put it either in glass or stainless steel, because then the chemicals don't leach into the food. All right, So stop storing in aluminum cans, aluminum tup pans, aluminum storage

containers, aluminum foil. Even touching aluminum foil, it gets into your system. Okay, there's aluminum in the air, there's aluminum in the water, so we got to really reduce our exposure to aluminum. It's in deodorants actually, so make sure you buy if you buy deodorant, make sure it's aluminum free, you know. And you can use simple stuff just like baking soda that helps to get rid of body odor. Baking soda is super cheap,

super healthy, no risk, no side effects, no chemicals. Right, take advantage of all these natural holistic cheap products like vinegar you know that cleans a lot of stuff, Lemon orange peel. You know, there's all these natural products that you don't have to use all these chemicals. You know a lot of a lot of patients they use mouthwash. So now that's not good. The alcohol in mouthwash is going to kill off all these good bacteria you

need as a good bacteria. So it's much better to do oil pulling, where you just take coke, not oil, and you put a one drop of tea tree oil as well, and these have natural antibiotic properties that's gonna kill bad bacteria and not sacrifice good bacteria. So you do oil pulling. You just take coconut oil, one little drop of tea tree oil, swish it around in your mouth from thirty seconds to two minutes, and then spit it out in your garbage so it doesn't clog your pipes or anything like that.

But that gets rid of the bacteria. You want to do that first thing in the morning, before you even swallow, before you talk. The oil pulling is very healthy to kill off the good bacteria. Sleep will help get rid of the good bad bad bacteria. So with the autopogy when you're not when you're resting and you're not eating, now your body can cleanse itself. That's autophogy and it can be created through fasting. And this needs to

it.
