BOLD: A Century of Grace

Welcome to BOLD: A Century of Grace–a new podcast combining family history, valuable lessons learned, perhaps a little folklore, and definitely a little bit of whiskey. It’s a love letter to my Great Great Grandma Grace and the women who came before and after her. It’s about her life, my own, and the century in between.

Episode 4: Great Grandma Mary

We have a treat for today's episode! In 1990, my insightful mother, Julie Barnes, interviewed family members about their life stories. This episode features sections of her conversation with my Great Grandma Mary (Grace's daughter, Rosemary Grace English Kimball Kennedy, 1930-2018). If the audio is too hard to hear (it was originally recorded on a cassette tape), you are welcome to skip forward to the 10 minute 30 second mark. :)

Episode 3: Paving Her Own Path

A little while ago, I was listening to the "Year of Polygamy" Podcast (it is excellent, look it up) and the host noted that history often follows men, not women. That was one of the reasons I decided to start this podcast: to build Grace's history and tell her story. This episode is about Grace's divorce and move to California with four young children. Most of my research came from census records and Zillow. Find show notes on Instagram @allieabarnes or at centuryofgrace.com.

Episode 2: The Beginning & End

This episode focuses on Grace's courtship and marriage to James Franklin English, and subsequent divorce. We touch on more of this in episode 5 as we wrap both Grace's and Tressa's (James' second wife) stories. A loving shout out to my friend and medium/psychic Ashley, who you can find on Instagram @postmormonmedium. More info at centuryofgrace.com.

Episode 1: The Worst & Most Forgotten Disaster

While this podcast is about my great-great grandmother Grace Walsworth Bates English, we're actually starting our story before that, with her parents, Wells Hammond Bates and Imogene Cosgrove. I'll share a bit about the 1890 Walnut Grove Dam Disaster and how that may have influenced the family moving forward. Show notes available on Instagram @allieabarnes or at centuryofgrace.com.
