Now it's time for our daily Bloomberg Law Brief, exploring legal issues in the news. And today Bloomberg LA host Jun Granso and Michael Best discussed another setback for President Trump's travel ban after the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals forced the government to accept people with grandparents, cousins, and other relatives in the US. They speak with Peter Bloomberg,
a legal editor for Bloomberg News. Peter, this has been going on for so long and in so many different courts, So just refresh our memories a little bit about where the travel ban is now, sure June. Well, recall that the President issued his initial executive order back in January, and it created chaos and airport in part because the specifics of the order weren't entirely clear. And then the
order was clarified and revised in March. And that is the order that was then handled by the Supreme Court in June with a ruling that the Ministration could proceed with a limited ban, and the Supreme Court set some parameters on the scope of the restrictions. So what did
the Ninth Circuit rule? Exactly? Nice Circuit was really only clarifying the scope of the restrictions imposed by the President as they apply to the travelers from the Six nations and the refugees, And specifically, the issue with both sets of immigrants has to do with whether they have so called bona fide ties to people in the US, and the Supreme Court in June said that travelers with close relatives in the US should be allowed into the country,
but it didn't specify other than giving a few examples. So the Trump administration then said that certain relatives would be allowed in. And with the refugees, there was an issue about whether they had ties to the resettlement agencies that helped place them in the US, and in both cases, the Ninth Circuit said that the Trump administration's interpretation of
the Supreme Court order was too restrictive.
