Charlie Pallett, and that's a Bloomberg Business flash. You're listening to Taking Stock with Lean and pin Box on Bloomberg Radio. Forty nine people are dead, fifty three are wounded in the worst mass shooting in American history and earlier today, the head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mr James Comington. He described more information about the terrorists involved in this
Omar Martin. He said that Mr Matteen first claimed family connections to al Qaeda, which, like the Islamic State, is a Sunni Muslim terrorist group. He also said that he was a member of Hezbollah, a Shiite group in conflict
with al Qaeda and Islamic State. Here to tell us more about terrorists and terrorism is Dr Anne Speccard, a just adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry Georgetown University School of Medicine, also the author of books such as Talking to Terrorists, co author of the book undercoveragei Haati and her late book Bride of Isis. Dr Speckhart, thank you very much for joining us. You're welcome, glad to be on. I
admit that I wish this was under other circumstances. But having said that, I'm wondering if you could tell us a little bit about what you've learned from interviewing nearly five dred terrorists and their family members in various parts of the world, and what that has taught you about today. Yes, this weekend, I beg your pardon this weekend's tragic events. Well, what I can tell you is recently, our last almost forty interviews have been with ISIS padres themselves, so they've
been with defectors. And what we're finding with the defectors is that when you get into ISIS, you have to be had a prisoner after you go through Sharia training. So anybody that comes back from ISIS probably has blood on their hands. And we also know all that ISIS is willing to use anybody, So even if you're extremely mentally disturbed, they don't care as long as you go out and kill in their name. They don't necessarily want you in a cell. But it's not like we have
cells running in the US. Instead, we have internet recruitment. Of the thousand cases that have that are open with the FBI, and there's many more closed and Omar was one of them that was closed. Uh. Those people are recruited into ISIS through social media and they're told to go out and attack, especially right now during Ramadan. There was a call by add Nani to attack during Ramadan and attack in any way possible. So if you're mentally ill, they don't care. All they care is did you kill
people in their names? Well, I guess I have to bring in someone that I don't think should be forgotten in the wake of this mass shooting. And that was the shooting death of Christina Grimy, a twenty two old singer who came in number three you on the sixth season of The Voice. That occurred Friday night. Uh, and her killer had two handguns, two additional loaded magazines, a large honey knife. She came up to up to after a conference she was signing autographs for fans and shot
her dead. How different are these two men? Is one? Are they both mentally disturbed? Is the fact that one was at least identifying with isis make them that different? Uh? Well, the Christina Grammy thing is horrifying. My oldest daughter is a professional singer, so there's a crapot of me. But you know, probably both of them had a bit of narcissism that they wanted to be known for killing someone famous or or become famous for killing for carrying out
a slater. And we often see that with school shooters, with people that UH do things like this, that they're narcissistic and grandiose, and they don't care if they died doing it. You know, they're just they're really mentally ill. But the difference here is if they do it while pledging their buyout should terrorist groups, then it gets named a terrorism and it has a political element to it.
So that's the difference. But probably in both cases. And I can't say I'm an expert on what happened with Christina. I heard about it from my daughter and was horrified. But I don't know aboutter killer, whether he was mentally I learned out a certain sounds like he was, Doctor Scheckard. The Florida Department of Corrections has revealed that before working for that private security firm g f S, that Omar
Mattine worked briefly as a state prison guard. Also, the government of Saudi Arabia reported that Mr Mattina traveled to that country twice. Is there anything that we can learn from getting this information now that perhaps would have prevented such a horrific event? Not necessarily not from that information. I mean, it's normal for a Muslim during their lifetime to try to go in observe hajj, and that's just
a religious duty and nothing wrong with that um. But on the other hand, when you go to Hajj, you're put in in Nacca with hundreds of thousands of people from all around the world, so you might get h exposed to terrorists and people to believe things that you didn't necessarily know about or know how to connect with. But the truth is now with isis all you need is a telephonia or a computer and you can connect
with them. And they are recruiting NonStop over social media and trying to make this with our machetes and their videos look like some uh glory thing that will make you into a man, that will make you into a very good world lum, that they're somehow creating a utopian caliphate. And what they argue if you ask them about the blood that shed, they'll say, well, this is a revolution. Whenever you make a revolution, you shed blood, but you ultimately get to justice. And you know, think, if you're
naive or mentally disturbed, you may believe that. If you're more balanced, you know, that's a pack a lot, But going to Saudi isn't necessarily indicator of anything. Dr and Speckar, thank you so much for joining us at Gentle Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University. She has interviewed more than five hundred jihadis and terrorists. We want our hearts again and thoughts with the victims and the families of the
Orlando shootings. Also to the family and friends of Christian Ygreemy. I'm Caffeine Hayes. Along with Pim Fox. This has taken stock on Bloomberg Radio.
