This is Bloomberg Daybreak. As we've been telling you, we have reports of a commercial passenger jet crash in China. Late breaking, still developing story. Let's find out what we know right now from Bloomberg's Will Davies in Hong Kong, who's following the bury late. What details can you impart to us right now, Will, John? Yeah, yeah, we still haven't developing. Still situation, that's unclear. What caused the cat the crash. It went the plane went down in a
sort of wooded mountainous area. There is footage emerging on social media and China sharing the hillside in flames. The plane was carrying and thirty two people that's hung in twenty three passages and nine crew. It was heading towards Guangzhou in the south, a big manufacturing city, one of China's biggest cities, and it was flying from Kummin, which the capital of Yunnan Province in the southwest of the country. China Eastern was the air airline that's one of China's
big biggest carriers, but based out of Shanghai. Um You know, it's a major state run carrier. So we haven't heard from them. They haven't made an announcement officially. I think they've acknowledged m the crash has taken place, but obviously they haven't come up with us. And yet they're sending a team down and President hues into in just issuing some comments now urging an investigation to find out what caused this crash. What do we know about the Boeing
model that's involved. How does that differ from the Max? Uh, Yeah, it's a proceding model to the MAX. So the seven eight hundred next GM, it's uh, it's got a good safety reputation. Um the Max isn't allowed to commercially, hasn't been fully authorized the return to commercial service in China, So this is the model before that, and it had one of a good safety record. I think Bowie said
in twos and eighteen. Around that time there have only eight Taple actidents involving that model out of more than seven thousand of those aircrafts sold. But that's actually a matter of tragedy. It looks it looks that way for sure. Um and it's bad news for Bowing as well as their share Pope looks to be dropping pretty fast in pre market. Yeah, and Bowing has not had a very smooth riot again. China in terms of the aviation regulators there has it. Yeah, I mean, there was progress made
towards the un grounding of the Max. Most other markets around the world of the term the Max to the sky, the China which is the first to ground in March nineteen after the crash in Ethiopia. That's it's still remains grounded commercially anyway, There's been some test flights and it was looking like that it could be. I mean, they've given the initial approval for it to return, but it hadn't entered back into commercial service yet. So and there's
various complications that have added to delayed. You know, the trade disputed between the US and China. UM, so the relationship between the two countries wasn't having the particularly smooth for several years, and their China is a huge market for Boy, so they've had a tough time trying to get the Max back in the air and it was just looking you know, it could have been a matter of weeks that it was going to return to commercial service US. But I'm not sure how this will impact that.
What's the safety record of the airline involved, do we know? Yeah? I mean China's got well sunny in recent decades, a good good safety record. It's a trout of its recorded and flying China Eastern, like I said, one of the main state run carriers. It's hadn't had a crash since two thousand four. Fatal crash anywhere in the last rate of crash in China was twelve years ago in twenty ten, so it's had a good record of aviation safety in China.
Bloomberg's Will Davies joining us from Hong Kong this morning. Will, thanks for the update. Appreciated again. Boeing seven thirty seven, eight hundred n G next generation plane operated by China Eastern Airlines crashed in the southwestern Chinese province that they well onety two people on board. One hundred and twenty three passengers and nine crew members. It is six twenty four on Bloomberg. This is Bloomberg Daybreak. We shift our attention out of the war in Ukraine. The fighting and
evacuations have led to the humanitarian crisis. The flood of refugees continues into Europe, and Bloomberg's Agge Cantrell joins us this morning reporting from the u n World Food Program depot in Poland. And correctly, if I'm wrong, Aggie, but it's one gigantic warehouse there. What's what's the situation on the ground. Yes, so it's a really massive warehouse here that's currently being used by both the U n a c R and the World Food Program in order to
ship out supplies to Ukraine. I've been speaking to people here saying that um the U n a c R Is providing everything from betting to solar lamps for people
on the ground. Because it's really important to remember that in lots of parts of Ukraine right now, there is a complete lack of critical infrastructure, and cities like Mariopol, which we've heard is been under bombardment since March second, we've been seeing uh many people without food without water, and so this is a direct humanitarian crisis as well as war. Hey can the aggressor in this case, Russia distinguished between shipments of critical supplies humanitarian aid and arms supplies.

The following commentary is from Bloomberg Opinion. New York City's economy still hasn't caught up. I'm Justin Fox, the columnist
for Bloomberg Opinion. The big job market story of the past year in the US has been one of high demand for workers and a less cheap and abundant supply of labor than employers had gotten used to. Not in New York City, where unemployment is almost twice the national rate and there's still six percent fewer jobs than before the pandemic. How does this square with reports of skyrocketing rents and tech workers flocking to the city. Well, New York City real estate is weird, and tech workers are
flocking to the city. There just aren't nearly enough of them to make a dent in the overall numbers. Most New Yorkers work in less glamorous, lower paid jobs, and there are still fewer of those in the city than there were before the pandemic. I'm justin Fox. The war in Ukraine has caused oil and gas prices to soar, and Kuwait is among the hottest places on Earth. In fact, the Middle Eastern country reached a scorching temperature of one
hundred twenty seven points seven degrees fahrenheit. The extremes of climate change present existential perils all over the world, but the record heat waves that roast to Kuwait each season have grown so severe that people increasingly find it unbearable by the end of the century. Scientists say being outside in Kuwait City could be life threatening, not only to birds. A recent study also linked sixty seven percent of heat related deaths in Kuwait's capital to climate change. Bloomberg n j I T Stem Report. John, all right, thanks Nathan. We're live for the Bloomberg in Tranto Broker's Studios where E is six fifty two Old Wall Street. Yeah, that's time to check what's going on in d C. Some of the top stories in our nations capital include President Biden speaking with European leaders handed of his trip to the continent this week. The White House also meeting with Exxon and other firms on the Russia's sanctions and
Supreme Court confirmation hearings they begin today. Also, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas hospitalized with an infection. Let's take a deeper dime this morning with Bloomberg Government reporter Emily Wilkins Family. Thanks for being with us this morning. Happy Monday. I guess it's safe to say the diplomatic efforts on the continent or increasing this week, especially with the President Biden's visit,
and I'm here you there, Yes, doesn't. He is going to be attending NATO as well as meeting with other European Commission leaders UM. And this is going to be coming as the European Union is going to try to reinforce the US warning to China that Beijing is going to base serious consequences if you trying to uh give muscle and notarious or if they wind up trying to ease some of the stations that the US has put
in place on Russia. And the White House also meeting with xx On and some other firms on the sanctions. What's going to develop in that meeting. So obviously, right now, high gas prices are a concern for a lot of Americans as well as the Biden administration. They know that they're usually tied with how Americans feel about the economy,
whether you think that's fair or not. UM. So President Biden is going to be speaking with the number of these companies, UH, including x On, Marathon Petroleum, as well as JP Morgan and Bank of America just about what we're seeing going on with that war in the brain
and what the USE is expecting moving forward. UM. The Biden administration has tried to encourage some of these gas companies to step up their production and increase in prices, although at the same point you were Republicans and other companies kind of pushed back on the Biden administration and say, hey, if you want us to increase production, you need to roll back some of your regulations that put on us UH as part of president by the screen energy policies.
You can imagine that Vladimir Putin was hoping that some of the world resolve would start to crack at this point, Is there any sign of that happening as far as what Putin is is thinking. I think that's a little unclear to everyone at this point. I think the big thing that we're looking at is whether that diplomacy between Ukraine and Russia is making any sort of progress. It
really doesn't seem like it is. I mean, the headlines out today is that who went to marlpol and said that they needed to, you know, ask them to surrender on the individuals. They said, no. Lots of questions about what is going to be happening, what if any kind of agreement they could come to in regards to what crain the teachers with needle, whether they could become as
sort of a neutral ally like Switzerland or Australia. Talks are aren't going there, and there's no clue I think this morning whether or not we're going to get some agreement in the near future. Let's much to the Hill that you have the Supreme Core confirmation hearing set to begin today for Catogy Brown Jackson's nomination. Are we going to see fireworks? What is expected? Well, today is gonna be pretty tame, because today is just going to be
opening state and state. Well here from the longakers on the Judiciary panel as twenty two senators was well, here from several individuals who will introduced Judge Jackson as Emily will here from Jackson herself. After that, tomorrow, we're gonna start moving into the Q and A. That's going to be a three day hearing, so certainly a lot that's gonna go on there. We've already seen Republicans kind of previous some of the attacks that they planned to make.
They actually planned to start to move beyond just Jackson's hearing into their wider messaging for the mid terms, which is that they're they're raising concerns that the Biden administration is soft on crime. Um to expect that to play out a little bit within the hearings. But remember Jackson was nominated by this same group of senators just last year for spot on the Daz Appeals Court. So many
of these lawmakers they're million with her. Um. You know, number of mem recently learned for her, And at this point it does seem like she's going to be able to singe that nomination with democratic support. Emily, Thanks very much, Bloomberg Government reporter Emily Wilkins. f M H D two. Nathan Okay, John, Thanks, It's six fifties six on Wall Street. This is Bloomberg Daybreak. March is Women's History Month, and every day this month we're celebrating significant moments in women's history. And now with your installment for March twenty one, here's Bloomberg's Nita Young on this day in women's history. In nineteen sixty nine, women from the feminist group Red Stockings organized a public
hearing entitled Abortion speak Out. It was held at the Washington Square Methodist Church in New York City's Granite Village. At the time, the Radical Feminist Group was furious that hearing is about a portion featured only male speakers. The debate at the time focused on rape, incest, or health of the mother. The group wanted to provide women with a platform to speak out, share their experiences with illegal abortions, and shift the debate to what they believed a woman's
right to choose. That's today in women's history. I'm we need a young Bloomberg radio. Alright, we need to thank you.
