Hey there, blogging ladies. Welcome back to another episode of the Boss Lady Bloggers podcast. I'm so excited to have you here with me today because we're going to be diving into a topic that has the power to transform your blog from just another website to a platform that actually deeply resonates with your readers and drives you real results. So today we're going to be talking about why your blog posts need more depth and how to add it.
So whether you're just starting out or you've been blogging for a very long time now, this episode is going to be one that is going to challenge the way that you think about creating blog content. And spoiler alert, it's not going to be about writing more, it's going to be about writing better. So if you want to learn how to write better, then stay tuned.
So I know what it feels like to be so overwhelmed by all the content out there, constantly trying to keep up with your posting schedule and wondering if youre blog posts are actually really making a difference and people are actually enjoying them. Or are they even getting read? But here's the thing. The key to standing out isn't going to be about posting more frequently. It's in creating blog posts that actually mean something to your audience.
Posts that go beyond surface level tips and advice and get to the heart of like, what your readers truly need to hear from you. So if you're ready to take your blog post to the very next level, grab a notebook or a pen and let's get into the why your blog needs more depth and how you can start adding it today.
¶ Understanding Depth in Blog Posts
So what does depth in a blog post really mean? So when I say your blog posts need more depth, I'm not just talking about writing longer posts or packing in more information. Depth is about substance, meaning, and more connection. It's about going beyond the surface and providing your readers with content that not only informs them and educates them, but transforms them. So think about it this way.
A shallow blog post might offer quick tips or basic information that your readers could find anywhere else, right? They could literally go to chat GPT and look for all the information and generate so much knowledge that they can get from the tool, right? And there's nothing wrong with that. But it's not the type of content that will keep your audience coming back for more, right? If you just fill it with education.
A post with depth, on the other hand, dives deeper into the why and the how, providing insights that make your readers pause, really reflect, and feel like they've gained something more valuable than just knowledge that they can get everywhere else. Like it's content that speaks to their emotions, challenges their thinking, and gives them a sense of purpose. When you add depth to your blog post, you're creating content that feels like a conversation.
You're giving your audience more than just facts. You're offering them a piece of yourself, your unique perspective, your expertise, your experiences in the way that you feel about things. You're showing them that you understand their struggles, their desires and their needs in a way that feels way more deeper and more personal.
¶ Key Elements of a Deep Blog Post
So here are a few key elements of a blog post that I would say that would have way more depth personal stories or examples that help illustrate your point. In depth explanations that go beyond service level tips. Emotional connection that shows that you truly understand what they're struggling with and how to help them. You truly understand them and like the thoughts that they're really thinking in their head on a daily basis, what keeps them up at night?
You're truly going to be putting that emotion into it and that empathy into it. And then practical advice that your readers can implement immediately. So yes, it's still going to be advice and value. Very valuable, very educated, educational, but we're just incorporating all of these different things for depth and then reflection and insight as well that challenge your readers to think differently.
So when you can have them reflect in and like reflect on the things that you're saying, it's going to allow them to think differently about things.
And that's what's going to move them towards like purchasing your offers, because they're going to think, okay, if this helped me like, this much and like really think about these things, like, there's different opinions and different, you know, this is just completely unique, a unique way of viewing things, then how is her actual paid products going to be? Like, if this is like the free value she's giving on the front end of her blog, right? So that's what you want to do with your blogs.
And now that we've established, like, what this depth really means, let's talk about why it's so important for your blog.
¶ Importance of Depth for Engagement
So why does depth matter so much when it comes to blogging? Can't we just stick to short, snappy posts that cover the basics and give them what they need? And the answer is yes, like, you can absolutely do that. But if you want to build a loyal, engaged audience and create a blog that stands out amongst every other blog post who are going to be writing about the same thing that you are, then you need to offer something more.
You need to create blog posts that could be on the surface and provide real value, not educational value, not just that, but real value of like, how can this transform their whole entire life?
¶ Why Depth Matters in Blogging
How does this transform their thoughts and what they're feeling? So here's why adding depth to your blog post is so important. Number one, it builds authority and trust. When you take the time, and yes, I mean time, to create thoughtful, well researched and meaningful content, your audience will start to see you as an authority or in your niche and very knowledgeable and somebody that they can really, truly connect with. Anyone could just write a blog post with, like, basic tips, right?
But when you add depth, you're showing your readers that you know what you're talking about on, like, a deeper level. And you have feelings behind it, you have experience behind it, you have knowledge and opinions behind it, like, your own opinions. And people want to connect with you on that level. You become somebody that they can trust for expert advice, for one, but also somebody that they can resonate with and, like, build a long term relationship with. And that's so crucial.
You have to build relationships with them. You have to connect them with them on deeper levels if you want. Let's say, like, this blog post is, like, truly going to transform somebody's life and they're going to think so differently and so much more positively, or it just, it gives them exactly what they needed to hear in that moment to, like, do something big. You know, they're gonna reach out to you and they're gonna be like, oh, my God, you really changed my life.
Like, this is really helping me. And then they're gonna want to buy whatever you have to offer because you made a difference in their life with just your free content, right. And depth keeps readers engaged. So let's be real. People have such short attention spans these days. Like, everybody has some kind of ADHD. There's just so much content, there's so many videos to watch on YouTube. There are so many movies to watch right at your fingertips.
There are so many things that we can do, but, like, we're doing too much nowadays. We're looking at too much, we're reading too much, we're watching too much, we're doing too much with our brains and I. If your blogs are packed with value and provide a deeper understanding of a topic, people are going to, like, pause.
They're going to, like, take a second, you know, instead of, like, going through so many different blog posts and blog posts and blog posts, when you capture their attention, like, right in the introduction and provide something that's actually going to be meaningful and like a different perspective backed on like, your experience and story, they're going to pause and they're going to want to stick around so much longer. Longer.
When you dive into like, the why behind the what and offer insights that others are not providing, you create this experience that keeps readers hooked from beginning to end. And then they're going to want to sign up to your freebie because then they need more value, they need more from you. And then they're going to want to go to your podcast or go to your YouTube or keep following you, go to your Instagram or whatever it is, right?
Like, whatever your goal is for this blog post, they're gonna take action on it because you hooked them, you compelled them, and you made them enjoy their experience reading your blog. So I'm gonna tell you right now, if there is not meaning behind a blog post, I am not reading it. If it's just sharing with me, like, all these like, tips and strategies that I've already heard from like a million people, like, that's just so boring. I don't get any kind of value from that.
But if somebody makes me feel something right in the introduction I am reading, you know what I mean? So that's what you need to do. Like, no more just educational posts, no more fluff that doesn't have your story behind it or experience behind it.
And yeah, nobody wants to, like, read a post all about your life and you rambling on and on about you, but it has to have those little snippets of stories and experience behind it and meeting behind it in like, different perspectives so that they transform their mind and really start connecting with you, the person behind the blog. You know what I mean? So depth also drives the shares and engagement.
The blog posts that get shares the most are going to be the ones that really make an impact on them. So when your readers find a post that resonates with them on a deeper level, they're going to be so much more likely to share it with others. Because if you're a person who, like, goes through blog posts and like, if you stop and read a blog that's transformational, you're going to want to share it.
Like, if they have a call to action in there, make sure you share this blog post to help somebody else transform their life, then they're going to go and do that, right? Depth inspires people to comment. It inspires them to share their own experiences. When you are vulnerable and authentic and sharing what you believe in and your story. People are also going to connect with that and be like, I want to share, too. I want to be involved in this.
And then they're going to engage with your content in a meaningful way as well. You set the tone for what you want your readers to do. Okay? If you're just going to give a bunch of fluff, education, tips, strategies, blah, blah, blah, and that is it. And don't connect with them on a deeper way, they're just going to click off and go find more of, you know, they're like, they're going to keep continuing their search for something that, like, really impacts them.
That's what people are searching for nowadays. Like go and like, experiment with this. Go on Pinterest, go to look up articles on how to start a blog and go find a blog that actually means something to you, like hooks you right from the start and study it. What made you hooked? And it's gonna be like a story that they put in there, experience that they put in there, or a different perspective or something that you haven't heard before.
It's unique and you're just going to be looking through all those different blog posts to find one. And that's what your audience is doing, too. They're just looking for something that is really going to, like, make a difference on their life. Depth also sets you apart from the competition. There's so many different blogs out there who are literally going to talk about the same topics that you are there. Millions of blog posts on how to start a blog.
There's millions of blog posts on how to make money and how to get out of a depression and blah, blah, blah, right? Millions. And standing out can really feel like an uphill battle. Trust me, I know. Like, it's really hard. Like, the blogging space is very saturated. There's so many out there. But when you create posts or content in general with meaning in depth, you're automatically setting yourself apart from the competition.
Most bloggers are too focused on just churning out content quickly on a weekly basis, and that's where they miss the mark. Right? You can truly shine when you put this depth and meaning behind your blog post and not be so focused on just like putting out the content for the sake of it, but putting out content to be meaningful slowly but surely, I always say slowly does really win the race.
I don't say that, but, you know, it's really true that saying when you take the time to craft posts that dig deep, you're creating something that other bloggers aren't and that's very powerful. So now that we've covered why we need to have depth and why it's so important within our blogs, let's get into the good stuff.
¶ Strategies to Add Depth to Your Content
How to actually add depth to your blog post. So I'm going to share five strategies that you can start using right now to take your content from really good or just good, or just basic to great, to amazing, to wonderful, to meaningful, to impactful. Number one, you want to share stories, your personal stories. One of the easiest ways that you can do this is by sharing your own personal stories and experiences and your own thoughts about everything. Your audience doesn't just want advice nowadays.
They want to know you. They want to hear about your struggles, too. Snippets of them. Okay, I'm not talking about creating a whole entire blog post about how your dog died. I'm really sorry if that happened. I don't even know why I gave that example. But anyways, that's just an example, okay? Nobody wants to hear about you rambling on and on and on about like how your life sucks and blah, blah. No, like they needed to be inspirational.
Like little snippets and stories here and there throughout the blog where you, you can say, I struggled with this too. Like, I hear you. I feel you. I'm very empathetic with you. This is how I felt and this is how I overcame it. They want to hear about those little snippets and struggles, your wins, and how you navigated the challenges that they have also faced and how you overcame that.
When you include these personal stories in your post, you're making connections instantly with your readers that goes beyond the surface. It shows them that you've been there and it makes your content feel so much more relatable and authentic. So, for example, if you're writing a post about, let's say, productivity, don't just share like generic productivity tips. How about you start talking about a time where you really struggle to manage your time and how you overcame it.
Let the reader see the real you. Number two, focus on the why behind the what. So another way to add depth is explaining the why behind all of the whats. Okay, so im going to give you an example for here in a minute. But most bloggers focus on just giving these tips and advice, but they dont explain why those tips are actually important. If somebody doesnt understand why its important that theyre not going to do it right. So how can they actually help your audience?
So when you dive into the reasons behind your advice, you're giving your readers a deeper understanding of the topic. You're not just telling them what to do, but you're telling them why it matters in the first place to go and do it. I always incorporate the why behind everything. Even like when I'm building, like brands. Okay, I'm always focused on why. Why are we creating this logo in this way? Why did we pick a butterfly for their logo element?
Why did we pick this certain type of flower for their logo? Why did we pick these colors? What's the deeper meaning behind everything? Why am I even doing this blog post or this podcast episode that I'm recording right now in the first place? Like, I'm always asking myself, why? What is the deeper meaning behind this? How is it going to transform their life? You have to tell them why your advice matters, because if they don't know why, they're not going to do it at all.
So, for example, instead of listing the ways to improve SEO, explain why each strategy works and then how it can impact their blog's visibility. So this not only adds depth, but also builds trust and authority because your audience is going to see that you really know your stuff. Another example that I can think of is like when you tell them, like in the morning, you have to wake up and drink water. Well, why? What is, like the deeper meaning behind drinking water?
Well, it awakens your body and it's going to help you feel so much better. And then you can add a story in here. When I wasn't drinking water in the morning and I just woke up and I ate breakfast and I had a coffee, like, I felt so extremely exhausted and tired. And then as soon as I started to wake up in the morning and drink like a full glass of water, I truly saw the difference in my energy throughout the day. And that is why, like, you need to too.
If you want to get that burst of energy and feel really good starting first thing in the morning, then ditch the coffee and start drinking water. You see, like, I inserted a story in there of how I, and it can be like something so simple like that. Like create stories behind everything and explain the why with stories. And number three, provide actionable takeaways.
One of the biggest mistakes that I see bloggers make is writing posts that are full of information, but they lack actionable takeaways. Your readers should walk away from your posts with a clear understanding of what to do next and then how to apply the information that you shared. So when you provide, you know, the practical, step by step advice that your readers can implement immediately, you're adding real value to your content.
This helps your audience feel empowered, and then it makes your posts feel so much more meaningful. So, for example, if you're going to be writing a blog post about building a social media strategy, don't just give the generic general advice. You want to break it down into actionable steps that they can follow to create their own strategy. And then also add images throughout that can, you know, be quotes and motivational. Or like a checklist breaking down all the steps too.
You can also add a freebie in there of like the checklist at the end of your blog post. You can like put takeaways and then write down all the takeaways. Or you can even put like action steps, like in the middle of your blog post. These are all the action steps. Like give them the checklist, give them the breakdown and the takeaways incorporate research and data too.
Like research that you've done, the data to back everything up, the quotes to back things up, the statistics taken from other websites. Because this shows that, like, you've done your homework, you're knowledgeable, you are offering them well researched, incredible information. By backing up all your points with data, you're going to be adding another layer of depth that makes your content, like, so much more trustworthy.
Whether it's like a study, an industry report, a survey that you've conducted yourself, or any kind of information out there from very credible websites, adding this research and data and statistics can give your blog posts so much more weight and authority, and people will really trust that. And number five, engage with readers with thought provoking questions. I'm always doing this.
I always like, ask questions, try to put thought provoking questions in my content because I really want you guys to think on the things that I'm saying. So you want to encourage your readers to reflect on everything that they just read. This can be as simple as introducing the thought provoking questions throughout your post that prompt your audience to think more deeply about the topic.
When you ask your readers to consider how the content applies to their own lives or challenges, you're creating a more interactive experience. Now, you can do these with images. So like, the image can just be like a thought provoking question, or you can just add them throughout the content itself.
This not only helps your audience engage with the post, but also encourages them to see your blog as a place for meaningful conversations so they can go in the comments and they can answer this question. So, for example, if you're writing a post about, like, the mindset shifts for success, you want to ask your readers to reflect on how their current mindset might be holding them back. These kinds of questions can spark deeper engagement and make your posts so much more impactful.
I'm creating worksheets for my clients. I created a lot of worksheets for them and like reflections, I really want them to reflect on everything that they're learning. So I put in lots of questions for them in workbooks and such, and it really helps them to like, reflect and then how they're holding themselves back in anything that they're doing. You know, I don't really know where I was taking this. Reflections are just so important.
They want to reflect on everything that they learned and their challenges and their desires and how this is really, truly going to apply to their life and what are the next steps that they can take. A final thoughts so as we wrap up today's episode, I want to leave you with this one thought. Depth is your blog's secret weapon.
It's the key to creating posts that resonate, inspire, and actually drive the actions that you want them to like signing up to your email list, becoming a loyal reader to share your blog posts, to comment, to engage, to actually purchase from you. It's what's going to set you apart from the competition, and it helps you build that loyal, engaged audience that I know you desire. Because when they're loyal and engaged and they're your hype person, they're going to want to buy from you.
But remember, adding depth doesn't mean that you have to write such long blog posts or overload your content. With so much education and tips and information, they can get the information so many other places. It's about being intentional with your message, the deeper message that you want to share and offer, offering real value and connecting with that reader on a deep, deep level. So the next time that you sit down to write a blog post, ask yourself, how can I add more depth to this?
Whether it's sharing your personal story, explaining the why behind all of your advice, or providing actionable takeaways, you can have the power to create the content that leaves true, lasting impact.
